This is definitely one of the most iconic guitar riffs ever - one of the first I learned to play. That was almost 50 years ago and hearing this song still impacts me the same as it did way back then. It's timeless and the musicianship of this band is exceptional. When I was in my early 20's I remember learning the solos to Lazy and Highway star and my older brother thinking I was a guitar god, and although I later started learning EVH's solos note-for-note, and this was much simpler, it has never lost its appeal!!

Weren't the Rolling Stones there too? Memory plays tricks at my age but I distinctly remember newspaper photographs showing Deep Purple sat by the lake watching the fire.

@@ladyjane8855 not sure if they were there but Deep Purple DID rent their mobile studio to use to finish their album because they were under time constraints and the studio they were using wss destroyed by the fire.

Fairly easy until the lead solo. Set the guitar down and regroup. "How am I ever going to figure this out?" The chunky right hand took some serious practice time for the rhythm part, to get it right, as a beginner. It was a loooooong time ago.

Definitely, that's where the joy is... getting to listen with fresh ears ourselves, as we experience the first listen with these guys - it's like an echo chamber doorway to our own memories. And right... sometimes with a song like this, we forget there are still some "virgin ears" out there! Great one, whoever suggested this track!

@@malcshone4409I have a bootleg CD, Swiss Cheese of the Zappa concert in question. Deep Purple were supposed to begin working on the recording of Machine Head the day after the Zappa concert at The Casino in Montreux using The Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Studio.

Today, the RSM resides at the National Music Centre in Calgary

Hang around your local Guitar Center on a Saturday afternoon and you'll hear that riff - Usually people learn the "easy" version of the riff (played on the D & G strings) Ritchie plays it a little differently (on the A & D strings).

It's the first riff that most people learn wrong when they pick up a guitar. It's four chords: D4, F4, G#4, and G4. Beginners usually only pluck the root note of each chord until they start learning how to build chords.

Yeah, this and Don't ask me no Questions (can play it with one finger) and Bad to the Bone are recognizable rifts that are super easy to play to some extent as songs to get the beginning guitarist excited. Of course to play them right and all, they aren't one finger/one string songs, but the progressions are so iconic that even a one string facsimile makes it sound good for a beginner.

Holy cow! I just listened to "Highway Star" for the first time ever, after reading this. What a trip! That was pretty amazing. I only know the few radio songs from them. I guess I should go down that rabbit hole myself!!!

Machine is one of the PERFECT rock albums...Not a bad track.

My favourite album by my all time favourite band 🤘 My favourite song off the album is Pictures of Home. BTW Smoke on the Water was written in 10 minutes and is the story of the recording of the album.

I have everything they've ever produced, including their new album "Turning to Crime" which will be released in a few weeks. That's my iconic band from high school days. I've owned their 8 tracks, albums, 45's, cassette tapes, compact discs, 24 k Gold discs, SACD Hybrids, SHM CD's, and Hi Res CD. Love Deep Purple. Steve Morse does a dang good job and has actually with the band longer than Ritchie Blackmore ever was. Great guitarist.

@Sumon Jamal that whole Purple / Rainbow / Whitesnake / Dio Sabbath family tree is a mess. Circa 1981, whitesnake had mostly EX-Deep Purple guys, and it really shoulda been called Deep Purple lol. It was hard to keep track what part of the family tree those guys would end up next

Don Airey joined in 2002 as a replacement for Jon Lord. It was Jon who recommended Don as his replacement when he retired from Purple to do some of his own projects. Jon’s last project was to re-record his Concerto for Group and Orchestra, which was sadly released just after his death. RIP Jon 🎸🎸🤘

@@stevedavis5704 I'm 59 and I'm one of them. I can play that rift over and over when I was a kid. Used my brother's guitar. It was until watching it with these two today that I realized I didn't really know the lyrics. That riff was embedded in my brain the moment I heard it. It's in there forever.

This is one of the most recognizible riffs. There are many that fit the bill, Layla, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, Walk This Way, Sweet Home Alabama, Stairway to Heaven, Tie Your Mother Down, Kashmir to name a few.

Smoke on the Water is on Machine Head, not In Rock.

That's true lets all remember the fact that even though in the 90's we have had all the electric enhancements possible for music bands and musicians, it's good to note that Many of the grunge bands from that era of music & individuals, like Nirvana & AIC & Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees/ Mark Lanegan, Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl... supergroups of that era like Mad Season, Temple of the Dog, and many more bands that I can't think of the top of my head but worth noting as there are more aswell talented musicians/ vocalists, They all brought back the sound of the late 60's like Inspiration from Bands like Cream and obviously Beatles but then again who isn't influenced by Beatles lol. Also Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Byrds, also 70's iconic rock groups From led zeppelin, Deep Purple to more punk outfits like Sex pistols, The clash & so on... What those bands did in the 90's is combine the beauty aswell as the darkness/authentic & bare bone nature of punk to make some of the most iconic sounds that are still heard till this day. Essentially what I'm trying to say is they kept it real and also focused on their instruments the most without any additions to cover up any imperfections. And also displayed the raw talents of bands. As we know dance & pop music was at full swing and people like MJ were using so much electrical music to make their sound. Not to say he had a bad voice but nonetheless, he used autotune to some extent and he wasn't a musician couldn't play any instruments which to me is just insane when your considered a musical icon but don't play instruments, how are you creating your music just baffled me the whole concept of that even being a thing, but anyway he sang I guess so that counts, even though that's a cop out, and also he was definitely talented enough to learn himself, also to note after many years we find out all this weird nature of his private life which doesn't have anything to do with anything when being mentioned in this argument so to speak but still it's very damning to his legendary status and it also makes the whole vibe of his music hint in a downward trajectory... Anyway focusing on the musical aspect of things his voice also maddona another one of those to enhance their sound artificially which is fine I guess everyone has the freedom to make whatever music you want, but I found that the rock music from that era brought back the realism of things and like you could connect with people & Individuals that seemed like they were genuinely the same as on stage also in-person, something that was clearly lacking in other music genres of that time, and the grunge musicians decided it was time to change that and clearly used that as a tool to bring back raw sounding rock to the masses and major labels, a smart move as definitely people were felt like being left out and they capitalised on that, smart move you could say, even though it was all genuine not just made up for the sake of making an influence, as we know for example Kurt for his whole life felt like he was the outsider so it wasn't a Fugazi, what was that tho was acts from maddona that I just mentioned and also MJ and even Rock groups like G&R where they would wear flannel t shirts trying to fit in, even though Kurt stated many times, that it's about the music and not what I wear that is drawing these crowds to these shows not only of his but other bands that were playing this music as well, imagine maddona wearing a flannel lol... Even fashion changed and people started showcasing flannel shirts, it was as truly laughable from Kurt's perspective, and I guess ruined the whole idea of it being like this little underground, quiet thing that people enjoyed to this big commercial movement, little bit like the hippies where things eventually got so mainstream that it took Manson and his family to commit these crazy acts to change the course of culture, that was for grunge the death of Kurt Cobain unfortunately in 1994 of course if it didn't happen whether it was suicide or not, the point isn't what it was but the outcome of events, and that it clearly ended this grunge movement, even though there were still very talented groups, some likewise the same skill as Kurt, for some reason things never were the same & the main pioneer dying clearly left a big impression or should I say left a bad taste in everyone's mouth and people couldn't just pretend like it didn't happen, the same with the Manson Murders... You can't just forget about something like that clearly. Also Layne was deep in H by that point so his struggles meant he couldn't perform as much as possible, and bands like SoundGarden were wanting to be left out of the spotlight after all of those close ones that they seen suffer as a consequence of fame as well as Pearl jam hence the reason why it just slowly died out, even though any movement eventually dies out anyway. It's just a shame It had to happen like that in that fashion. The bands from the 90's grunge era showcased their raw talents. And clearly inspiration from that era of music which would be the 60's hippie movement with also elements of punk music distributed all over the songs & albums and also the mindset of these individuals, we know this as it's said by the actual people themselves, and by studying the sound of the songs and you can hear th influence right in your face, it's unavoidable. It's so obvious...and clearly the last era of pure rock music without any bullshit so to speak... which i fully enjoy, good to note that I'm only 27 as of now while writing this comment. So anyway can fall in some kind of love with anything doesn't matter the age or whether you are part of something that was or wasn't in your generation, or anything to do with me so to speak. Also no one showed me this sort of music. I found it myself, I love music. And I like to connect with something that isn't just pushed into my face, but I would like the idea of finding something that I enjoy... and that's the most important thing, it showed me that I'm aware as well of myself. Some of others could question my decision, and say I'm only showing off or trying to prove some kind of point in that I wanna be an outcast instead of actually being one. I guess some of us are looking too deep into stuff. How about the fact that I might just like this sort of music. Didn't that even cross those people's minds. And if anything they should be proud that still people that are young and grow up older listen to music that is way past their generations music. But I can relate to love or despair. I can't relate to violence and relish the idea of it. And fantasies about it. It's ridiculously stupid. Although I guess music does bare influence on us as I suffered the cost of that so to speak as, drugs is a thing most commonly known with rock music from 60's 70's 90's tbh any era. It just depends what drugs are related. So I guess to some degree I am stupid. But still I would rather experiment with drugs like I have done, than commit violence to others, and end up committing a crime I would have to regret for the rest of my life, forever living in agony. Thank you very much, I'm good 👍😊 at least you can say the consequences of my actions don't effect others more than they effect me for the good or bad. Which ever it is. My conscience to some degree doesn't allow me to just commit violent actions of inner rage and rebellion. There are other ways to express that or release those demons you can say. And that's by finding a healthy release. Not ending up in jail for the rest of your life as you squeezed the trigger and killed some innocent or not young or old civilian or criminal. It doesn't matter really, I ain't that brainwashed to allow my mind to be taken over to that degree, oh hell nah.... IM GOOD 👍 THX ✌️

Don’t forget Perfect Strangers too - the sections with Ian Paice’s drumming with Roger Glover’s bass, just those two together are brilliant. Then throw in Jon Lords magical keyboards (just a cut down Hammond P3 organ) along with Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar work and Ian Gillan’s vocals and you have one hell of a song!
