Anything by Willie K! Not only does he rock Hawaiian music, but he does some mean rock n roll, reggae, country, classical guitar, and even opera. And I'm probably missing something. Live performances way better than studio stuff.
Timo Tatofi is actually Joshʻs uncle, and his brother, TIva, is Joshʻs dad. Kapena was one of the biggest bands in the 80ʻs in Hawaiʻi and one of the first to mix reggae with pop and country music, as well as play other Pacific island music because the Tatofi brothers are from Tonga. Josh grew up in this world of music in Hawaiʻi, and heʻs said when he was growing up, he thought everyoneʻs family performed on stage. I think I recommended some Kapena songs to you when Iam Tongi was doing his first Jawaiian songs, but you may have missed them or the links didnʻt go through. The lead singer, Kelly Boy De Lima, was one of the big celebrities on the Haku Collective "Vote for Iam Tongi" video, so I thought you would recognize him. Iʻm surprised this is the first time youʻve seen a Kapena performance (and the OG members at that!) There are very few videos of any performers from the 80s except for those who were on TV shows like "Hot Hawaiian nights," but there are a lot or audio recordings, and many videos of the new Kapena, with Kelly Boyʻs kids, sometimes, called "The De Lima ʻOhana." His son, Kapena was named after the group (It means "Captain"), and he is the drummer on the right of this video, who engineered his own electronic drum set and taught it to his cousin just before the shoot. The beautiful setting is at the Koʻolau Ballrooms and Conference Center in Kāneʻohe, where many of the HI Sessions videos are shot. You should check out their channel and podcast (it was a local TV show) for a multitude of top-quality recordings of most of the well-known or up-and-coming musicians in Hawaiʻi in the last 10 years. There are even some videos of the "Kapena Kids with the De Lima kids, Josh Tatofi, and I think another nephew or godson.. For less quality, but more live-action personality of the artists, Iʻd like to recommend (again) some recordings I made of the Kapena with the De Lima Kids performing at the annual Made in Hawaiʻi Festival 10 years ago. I have many others, but hereʻs just a sampling of why the group, led by their funny, talented, and charismatic leader (Dad), Kelly Boy has stayed so popular. (He is famous for his ʻukulele skills.) This one is with the legendary and multi-talented Melveen Leed who is an old friend of Kelly Boy and had performed earlier in the day, so he called her up to sing with him. This is fascinating information. Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us! I honestly didn't recognize Kelly Boy from the Haku Collective video either, and I've watched it multiple times. He was wearing a hat in that other video, and no sunglasses- the opposite of this video. I do recognize his voice, since I know who it is now His voice and the music are gorgeous!

I saw that you reacted to Kapena and I can see how you’re passionate with our kind of music. Can you react to Blue Darling by Kapena? Their voices were phenomenal. Don’t get me wrong. They still got it. Beautiful.
Bro found one of the few Pacific diamonds! Bro is introducing the West to some island music. Sincere reactions and he actually listens to the lyrics. Five thumbs up!
Kelly Boy drinks that good water... He doesn't seem to age and always sounds solid. I remember seeing them way back in the day at Club Mimatsu when I was a kid. 😂 My fav's!
This is at the Ko’olau Ballrooms in Kaneohe. I got married in the gardens right below the balcony 🤗 Tropical Lady by Kapena is my favorite song. Brings back so many good memories.
