Bought a 2021 tcr advanced pro, and didn't realise i had hookless rims until thankfully i stumbled across a gcn video! The lack of tire options is very restrictive, no options in lbs, no giant tires available in giant store and had to fork out €72 each for cadex race tires. Its not worth the move yet until more manufacturers get approved.

Nice one Rupert. I've been tubeless on 28's on my Madone for nearly 4 years. I run 60/65 front /rear and will never go back. Hookless can only be an advantage and fitting the tyres is bound to be easier! 👍

My recent experience after more than 1000Km on a new set of 303 Firecrest with Pirelli´s P ZERO RACE TLR SL has been GREAT! (only 1 visible puncture so far and higher speeds on 100~140Km rides).

Wider tyres only have a lower rolling resistance at the same pressure as narrower tyres. But the whole point of wider tyres is to run them at a lower pressure, which brings the rolling resistance back up. So wider tyres are not faster, but they are heavier, less aerodynamic and more comfortable.

in my experience and beliefs that comfort makes you fast since you get less tired and undetectable body muscle fatigue in longer rides.

This was interesting and informative , but still did not explain why hookless is just as safe or safer than hooked rims. Also, can one run them without that messy milk stuff?

I've stuck with clinchers and probably will keep it that way. I've considered running tubeless for better puncture protection though. Otherwise, I'm a bit of a Luddite!

This is press fit bottom bracket 2.0. Bora is now riding threaded BBs with turbo cottons... just get what’s easiest for you to mount, service and find good tires for

Thanks for the info, right now though I'd still buy a hooked rim so i don't have to worry about tyre compatibility. And i still run latex tubes.

I'm riding a Giant Defy with hookless rims and have not experienced any issues. Until it came time to replace the tyres and the lack of choice is definitely an issue at the moment. It will be great when the choice is wider or if Giant did far more testing with a variety of brands other than their own.

I have a pair of hookless rims. Dunlop 26 x 1 1/4" from 1951. Stainless steel. 60 psi. The pain of hookless rims is seating the tyre concentric. A clincher seats the tyre bead 'automatically'. Hookless rims suffer on a hot sunny day where the tyre expands in the heat of the sun. Then they pop off. The 27 x 1 1/8" High Pressure ( with hooks ) was the rim to have if you didn't get on with tub glue. Don't believe everything you hear. Tour pros ride on 25-28" Tubulars. 28-28" Tubulars on pave.

I think that old type of hookless is quite different. Modern tubeless tyres have a bead which doesn’t stretch. To be honest with modern tyres on tubeless rims, it’s more obvious when they seat and once the bead passes the tubeless “shelf” and seats into the bead seat it will make a pop and it’s perfectly seated pretty much every time. On older rims without this shelf or bead seat (hookless or not) quite often I’ve you have to do it by eye and with a bit of elbow grease

Cool technology but considering it's still currently impossible for a lot of people to buy a new bike and pros are losing theirs, I'll keep riding on my 40 pound aluminum wagon wheels with puncture proof tires!

Qs: 1) Safer at puncture event? 2) Safer at very low pressures? 3) Debris factors at interface? 4) Any marked affect to whole wheel strength/stability with wider/changed rim design? 5) Any affect to brake and drivetrain? 5) Any issues with protective liners/ inserts? Thanks We once lived near a fishing sporting goods store called Hookers, Their slogan: "Fishing is always better with Hookers"

I think the biggest benefit of hookless rims is the lower cost of manufacturing, thus lower prices for consumers. Btw, the video says vittoria is not compatible with hookless rims, but enve approves vittoria corsa TLR and control TLR for use with their hookless rims on their website.

I jumped into the hookless bandwagon with a pair of Zipp 303 S wheels. I haven't had a chance to ride them yet due to the snow on the ground but the benefits seem evident. I don't really see any cons to the design concept.

You'll love them - comfort, speed and grip.👍 And added puncture protection, with the right tyres and sealant. However, so as to not sour the experience, just make sure you practice putting in a tube! 👍

After 30yrs of more traditional cycling, I'm considering changing to tubeless and getting Zipp 303 S fitted to my new bike. Is it too much of a leap though?

@@keithwarburton9610 Not at all. Lots of positives, and any possible negatives can be avoided/mitigated. Just go with recommend TLR tyres and sealant, watch some vids and practice getting them on and off. With the right combo, you'll find them v.easy to mount/unmount and even repair. I find Hutchinsons fusions tlr to be v.nice indeed.

Have now ridden an entire Season(4000K) on my Zipp 303 firecrests/Hookless with Schwalbe Pro Ones 28mm (Orange Sealant- Endurance)and im entirely happy with the Setup . zero Punctures fast and comfort Ride. Mounting the Tires was easy with a standart Floor-Pump.I stick wick tubeless/ Hookless

I still don’t understand how tubeless tires are set up on hookless rims. Is there the traditional pop when setting tubeless tires like you have on hook rims. What mechanisms keeps them from leaking or losing sealant

Yep. Normally, you get the same sound when the bead pops out of the centre and onto the shoulder. Once seated, they retain sealant in just the same way as hooked.

There will be pops when seating the tire. I think the sidewalls on some tubeless tires are more rigid, which is why some tubeless tires (most notably conti gp5000) are not compatible with hookless rims. Maybe they have softer sidewalls

I get the aero thing. The rest is basically the manufacturers saying to the consumers "please buy the think that's much easier for us to make". Once I can walk into any bike shop and buy a new tyre that will be safe on my hookless rim after I destroy a tyre when riding then I might be interested.

If you need a bit more comfort, then hookless gives a bit more leeway to lower your pressure. Also, quite a range of options now. Horses for courses.:-)

@Dave Lloyd For the same tyre size, I believe the hookless rim allows the tyre to 'open' up slightly more, bulb vs U shape. This creates more volume, or alternatively a larger diameter. Without going into hoop stress, the pressure actually needs to drop in order to keep the tension within the tyre the same. But this is OK, since the change in shape has also resulted in an increase in sidewall height (now U shaped). Thus the overall effect is to allow more squish without bottoming out. This change in shape and pressure also widens/shortens the contact patch, thereby lowering rolling resistance and improving traction. As for keeping the tyre in place, the hold has as much if not more to do with the inflexibility of the tubeless bead than any 'mechanical grip from the rim itself. The bead strength and tight tolerances between the bead and rim are what keep the tyre from creeping over.

@@davelloyd8454 Imagine a circle. Cut it at the top and slowly start moving the ends apart. Now imaging filling the gap with new string. What you'll notice is that you've increased the circle's diameter, and thereby it's area. The same principle can be applied to a tyre where the tyre is allowed to open up, but the open gap is filled instead by the rim bed. Furthermore, bearing in mind that a tyre is essentially akin to a long tube, if you're increasing the cross-sectional area, you're increasing the volume. ☺️👍

8. The tyres are more expensive (+15-30%) and are thrown away if you get a puncture that cannot be sealed. And, you still need to ride with a tube. And, if you do use a tube, the ride quality is poor because the sidewalls are too stiff.

More expensive - Not necessarily. Hutchinson Fusion 5 around £30 Thrown away after puncture that cannot seal - Not necessarily. Can be patched - Hutchinson tubeless repair kit. Still need to ride with a tube - Not necessarily. Nice and simple - Dynaplug tubeless repair Kit. Sidewall stiff - Not necessarily. Most I've used tend to be supple. Only the bead need to be 'stiff' (ie resistant to stretching). Any other concerns you can think of?

@@JibbaJabber dynaplug doesn't fix big cuts. Plenty of sealant, 2 plugs and I still ended up with a tube in.

@@davelloyd8454 Hi Dave. I think OP was comparing std tyres to tubeless. So, if your tyre was that badly cut I think it would be shot in any case. The fact that you managed to tube it and I assume get home was testament to their versatility. Do you have a tubeless patch kit? If so, was it safe to patch?

@@JibbaJabber I have run tubeless for the past 5 years and have patched a good number of tires, sometimes with more than one patch in different areas, with absolutely zero issues. Patched tires have held up great for me. You just have to patch them properly.

I guess we are witnessing a fight between rim and wheel manufacturers. Who saves manufacturing costs and who is to blame if something happens? Hooked rim - good for wheel manufacturers. Hookless - good for rim manufacturers. Honestly I couldn't care less who wins as long as I benefit. Until then we are left with one question: is it safe? While my fantasy strongly objects and insist on a hook - I haven't heard of or read about any incidents on Enves or the new Zipps that are related to the rim being hookless, even when crazy folks tried some "unsafe" wheels. I don't care about a few advertised watts however, saving bucks would be a benefit. When it's safe!

Very interesting information and great presentation. I guess though that I’m a dinosaur, give me a tubed wheel, rim brake compatible and a minimum of 32 spokes preferably 36. I’m not looking for the lightest and greatest wheels and tires. Give me durability and ease of use anytime.

Please keep making hooked rims. Soon we’re all gonna be forced to move to disc brakes, hookless rims, tubeless, and 1x. Everything that I don’t want on a road bike! Give consumers the choice is what I am saying.

I have a bike from the 1950s, two bikes from the 1960s and two bikes from the 1970s. I can still get parts for them. Don't be worried about being 'forced' to change to a re-invented wheel.

2:30 cycle tech certainly is lagging, its taken from the 1970's till now to go hookless and people are still using tan sidewalls.

Run hooked rims and choose whatever tyre you like and run tubes or tubeless. Why hassle with hookless for maginal gains. Both Continental and Vittoria say no hookless and they are experts. Also the constant referal to the pro riders is meaningless to 99% or riders.

Excellent video - no hype or schtick, just a clear and candid look at a promising new technology (well, new to road cycling, anyway!). Of course that doesn’t stop hidebound and self-styled purists from lashing out as though they were vampires being exposed to the sun. As the comments to this and all videos like it demonstrate amply, some cyclists are not just traditionalists, but shrill fundamentalists who see anything new as a kind of heresy. Which is fine when it is just a matter of their own preferences and purchases, but quickly becomes inexplicable when they reject science itself in order to maintain their claims of superiority. And it becomes frankly absurd when they accuse bike manufacturers of being evil for trying to attract new customers with new tech. Newsflash: disc brakes are better, tubeless tires are more reliable, and wide tires are faster. And of note here, hookless rims are both better AND cheaper. The only reason not to buy them once they and enough corresponding tires are widely available is personal preference. The case on merit is over before you can say “Bernard Hinault.”

I think it’s just a way manufacturers can cut cost and still charge high prices for something we don’t need. If you have a blow out then putting a tube in to finish a tour can’t happen. Heavy riders can’t run such low pressures.

I’ll NEVER start with that milk garbage in my wheels. NEVER ! Has the industry forgotten that 99,9999999 % of all cyclists ar NOT professionals ? We are normal people with normal demands of normal components which are in stock at ever bike repair shop !

Wow. You're a genius. Please listen to the video. And just a thought, why would companies make something which is not safe? They'd be sued left and right and they would lose if the product isn't safe. If one wins the case, thousands more would rise against them making companies lose millions. Zipp, Giant are companies with scientiests and testers behind them. Don't be dumb. Please.

Michellin won't even run their tubeless (TL) tires hookless - that says a lot.

@@noels8817 Continental also states hooked rim only on their GP 5000 TLs, basically anything above 5 BAR (72PSI) is a big no for hookless that's why they go wider and usually accept only 28mm and above. If you want 25mm or below go hooked, actually you will not find tubeless for 23mm and below. Hookless is safer when you run low pressures, that's why is ok for Gravel/MTB, hooked rims tend to burp when pressure is really low (normaly around 1 bar) and you have high lateral forces that can temporarily unseat the bed, on hooked rims if the lateral force is superior to the air pressure can blow the entire tire away, with hookless the tire normally will seat again in place as there is no hook. On higher pressures the hook is safer, at 3+ BAR the lateral forces has to be incredibly high to move the bed at 6+ BAR imagine... The only claim they can make is if you have a puncture that is not sealed, when pressure goes lower than 1 BAR then hookless might be safer, but again with tubeless pressure loss is gradual so you should notice the puncture way before it goes to 1 BAR. This is to reduce cost, and is nonsense, Chinese brands like yoeleo and winspace are using hook on carbon wheels at much lower prices than Zipp. On the high end Capagnolo is still using hooks on their carbon wheels. I'm in for a new bike build myself (as soon as things calm down, I hope next year) and I'm banning all hookless rims from my selection.
