Nutria are a rat-like, semi-aquatic rodent that was introduced to Oregon from South America in the 1930s. They are an invasive species that poses challenges for Oregon's native wildlife.
Editor’s note: It is illegal to release nutria into the wild in Oregon. This information was not included in the original video.
This "Oregon Field Guide" story premiered Feb. 1, 1993.

They sure are cute. Which is exactly what got us in a mess with all kinds of invasive species here in Florida, including nutria. I wish you all luck getting rid of them.

As an invasive species, it is not legal to release any nutria that are caught, or are raised as pets as that little one in the video. Feed it apples and pears and carrots ...

Good article, but it would be good to hear if nutria are also having an impact on wildlife and the environment

I stood very close to one by the river near downtown Ft Worth , Tx and thought at the time it was a giant muskrat.. now I know it must have been a nutria that had come out of the Trinity river to look around on the ground .

Nutria are smart and can be very friendly it is no wonder people like them. Looking back on this it is clear this was a bad idea and never going to work out. However, I never liked the idea of killing animals I think educating the public is a better long term solution, so we don't have this problem again.

Nutria taste much like the water they live in. Sweet meat, slightly gamey, but not unpleasant. I would imagine nutria intentionally fed apples or pears might taste especially good. Interesting video, thanks for posting.

Um.. ok? What does that exactly have to do with this video of Nutria? Maybe I missed it but are Nutria messing up the Beavers ability to be the very important & necessary part of being in the habitat?

@@dandeehart9553 Yes the Nutria are. They outcompete beavers and Muskrats here. They also massively degrade the riparian habitats the live in.

Gotta love how they entirely omit the whole wiping out of the beaver as the real reason coypu were brought here. And make it seem like it was just some get rich quick scheme for yokels.
