Luffy doesn't fight Bellamy because Bellamy isn't standing in the way of his dream. A man who doesn't believe in legends, in dreams, in the One Piece - he's not worth the effort.
@15:50 "This is my guy right here." This line of monologue is honestly the most powerful thing I've read in any media, for me. I grew up reading novels and am now well-read into my mid-40's, but this here is still my favorite line.
You have seen Bellamy's bounty poster in the live action. Clearly, Mock Town is filled to the brim with non-dreamers. Except for the pie guy who gave that really great speech. Note, when you get to episodes 196 to 206, those are filler. But filler that's totally worth watching and recording. [I bet you're wondering who the pie guy really is🤔]
if you notice there's something somewhat subtle about how bellamy's gang is portrayed. For all their big talk...they aren't really doing anything. they're jsut lazing around in mock town, not doing anything meaningful, buying out a hotel just cause they can, starting petty fights for no reason. Luffy and the gang are like actively looking for the sky island, but Bellamy's gang aren't doing ANYTHING. Without a dream or even something fantastical to strive for, they're just stagnating. THis is why the cherry pie guy says that "the new era is crap", cause without a dream you're just not doing ANYTHING, you're NOTHING. THis is also why Luffy didn't fight the guy. He was nothing, just some random douchebag laughing at him. He wasn't a threat, he wasn't in luffy's way and without a dream he was NOBODY. So Luffy didn't do a thing cause a fight with Bellamy would be pointless, just like when shanks just let the bandit throw beer on him.
just like usual with Luffy, he took Shanks' lessons to heart. 6-7 year old Luffy would've wanted to hospitalize Bellamy for that, but some fights just arent worth fighting according to Shanks, and Luffy hasnt forgotten.
It’s my belief that the scene outside of the bar after Luffy and Zoro get their asses kicked is one of the most important scenes in the entire series. I keep coming back to that line “A person’s dreams never end” and there’s just so much there in that interaction. It’s the central thesis to the series, and the man who says it making it even more important as you look back on it the further into the series you go. Just, ugh. Mock Town is so friggin good and it seems so insignificant at the time bc you just want to get to the sky island that you often overlook it on first viewing
to be clear, the fat man loved the cherry pie and hated the drink, and luffy hated the cherry pie but loved the drink c: all that matters is he and luffy have very opposite tastes c:
@25:20 "He reminds me of someone, and I don't know who." You'll get that a lot. Oda models a bunch of his characters after real-life celebrities and historical figures. I don't know if Bellamy was specifically a reference to someone, but I'd say the chances are decent he was.
I'd argue Bellamys face is hella similar to one of the idiot hyenas faces from the 90's Lion King movie (one of Scars henchmen/errand dogs), but maybe that's just a hyana's cliché face?
Pretty interesting, Bellamy’s name is based off of a real pirate named “black Sam” Bellamy. He was the wealthiest pirate in recorded history, and the captain of his own ship for a while. He later joined another ship captained by a man named Benjamin hornigold, who’s second in command was Edward “Blackbeard” Teach. Needless to say Oda definitely did his research
You imagine this scene with Bellamy in the bar in the live action? It may very moch insane, but this would be seen until third season the live action .
Just a quick translation clarification. When Luffy and Zoro referred to pie guy as "they", they were using the plural pronoun, not the gender neutral singular.
@MikeyVenture To clear things up, Luffy hated the cherry pie while the bigger dude loved them. When it came to the drinks, he thought it was bad but Luffy thought it tasted great. You gotta look at their faces.
the other thing to remember about the fight is shanks reaction to the Outlaw . At the time Luffy did not understand but its clear here that he now does. Though written JaYa it is often thought to transliterate to, Gyre is notabley a series of circulating ocean currents this is partly mentioned here. Something that may often be missed here is there seem to be references to the W.B. Yeats Poem "The second Coming" given how wide Oda is using literature such as Jonathon Swift and robert louis Stephenson i would not be suprised. Then again Oda was supposed to also have been influenced by "Vicky the Viking"
Luffy doesn't fight just to fight, it's not how he rolls. Someone attacking his friends or challenging his dream, he'll fight for that. Someone just being an ass? Not worth the effort. Nami is scary when she's angry, Chopper just reacted without thinking. He is a prey animal, after all.
its kinda fun when you look back on luffy and realise he's not like say goku and the like. He doesn't fight for justice, and he doesn't fight for fun, he doesn't really enjoy fighting in and of itself far as I can tell. FIghting is just a means to an end, luffy would rather just eat good for food and have some fun than get in a brawl.
Nami's growth is subtle, noticeable but very subtle, I would say on par with Luffy..or even more hidden. This arc does things for her..she does not know of Pirate values that much for now.
Pie man the goat. Luffy didn’t fight because Bellamy isn’t worth fighting at the moment. He’s a man without dreams, Luffys ideals are so above him he wasn’t worth it.
Luffy told zoro not to fight bc of what shanks did in EP. 3 when he didn’t fight the bandits that spilled sake all over shanks when he offered them. Shanks said it’s nothing to fight someone weaker. Luffy could stomp Bellamy but he didn’t bc of what shanks said and luffy idolizes shanks
what Luffy does facing Bellamy is quasi 1:1 what Shanks did in front of Higuma way back when Luffy was still a boy. Bellamy is so not worth the hassle!
Bellamy was a real pirate that went by the name of Sam Bellamy. 1:08 Nope he has a reason for every thing. Plus you've SEEN people die before. Mr 13 and Mrs Friday, Bellemere, some marines some bandits. That one guy that got eaten alive by the lord of the coast seaking. Are you an Indiana Jones guy?
