I had no idea so much of the arc had changed in the anime. Best joke in the original version is most of the straw hats being down with stealing Captain Foxy so they win the last round by default, until Robin says, "I don't want that weirdo on my ship," and the rest of the straw hats are all, bullet dodged, thank god we didn't take Foxy to be one of us. And the manga cuts to Foxy crying miserably.
He still is sort of introduced tangentially to the Foxy Pirates in the anime, just right after a filler Foxy Pirates return arc. It really is amazing how much Toei managed to stretch out this one section of the story before finally getting to Water 7.
ever since we learned about the Rocks pirates I have had a theory. How Rocks got that monster crew together was through a Davey back fight. Which is why it was introduced earlier in the series so Oda would not have to explain this ridiculousness during a climactic part of the story.
Foxy genuinely punched out with Luffy far better than I think most antagonists would have. There's a solid argument to be made that despite his looney-tunes antics, Foxy is kind of a boss - as evidenced by the fact that he'd never lost a Davy Back Fight until running into our titular crackhead and his band of lunatics. Like seriously - the dude has a crew of like 500 people, has a physique that allows him to fistfight Luffy (not well but he did it), a *massive* ship and variety of gadgets scattered throughout it, *and* his Devil Fruit. If Foxy had actually come at them head on in a *fight* instead of playing games, they might have actually won just due to the massive numbers difference and the Slow Slow fruit. It's honestly a *really* good thing Foxy likes to play Davy Back Fights instead of just attacking people.
The funniest part about how this arc feels like filler is the Davy Back fight in the anime was literally given filler events with the whole “second fight” thing.
Yeah, the rules should state that everyone can only participate in 1 match and then the three matches are the boat race with Usopp, Nami and Robin, followed by the ball game thing with Zoro, Sanji and Chopper (who can’t participate because he’s on Foxys crew now), and then the boxing match with Luffy. So cut out the other events and I think you actually get a nice little breather in between Skypia and Water 7.
Main reason it feels like filler to me is that it's a setup where things get traded but nothing really changed at the end of the arc. Sure there was the moment with Aokigi but that's disconnected from the rest of the arc, again making it feel like filler. Only real thing that mattered was remembering the slow beam when Luffy was attacked by the love beam
@@bigkirbyhj666 p much, they also changed some character interactions up which is p bad for an arc whose greatest value is the character work done in it. Like was said here, the notoriety of this arc definitely falls on how it was adapted.
Long Ring Long Land confirms that Luffy becomes more powerful the goofier Luffy gets, for we have confirmation that Afro Luffy is the most powerful version of Luffy in the One Piece universe, probably only thing above it is Afro Gear Five Luffy. 🗿
That's wild. I knew the anime added extra events but I didn't realize that the anime ALSO added more inside the existing events. The race didnt involve all the crew in the manga, it was just Nami, Usopp, and Robin.
I only watched the anime and I kind of hated the Foxy stuff for dragging too long. I legit thought: this would've been just fine if it was half as long. I wouldn't mind. Come to find out from the community that in the manga it was indeed half as long lol. Ironically I enjoyed all of G8 and I didn't even know it was filler until later.
@@Joseph_Drew_III yes, but there are 3 foxy "arcs" in the anime, the original from the manga streched out beyond breaking point because of the added filler, foxy return arc before water 7 and the spa island arc after triller bark.
I wish you had mentioned the explanation as to why everything was long in the island. That being: everything was so ordinary that it grew long to be more exiting.
Long Ring Long Land arc is not only not filler, but it is also critical to Zoro and Sanjis relationship, as it is the first time the two agnowlage each other as equal and set aside their differences to accomplish their shared goal. This is when Zoro and Sanji finally becomes a part of the same crew.
It also does establish pretty firmly that Luffy will not give up a single member of his crew, which is important for Water 7/Ennies Lobby and Whole Cake Island later on. You could argue that Arlong Park already made this point, but for me, LRLL solidifies how important this specific crew actually is for Luffy. No one is dispensible, NO ONE.
@@DaxSchaffer It goes a long way, but I don't think it's quite solidified by the end. Usopp still doubts his position on the crew in Enies Lobby. They fought to get Chopper back, but he's a doctor. He's useful, necessary even. Would Luffy have fought as hard if Usopp had been taken? Of course, but Usopp still needed to be convinced. Long Ring Long Land contributes exactly as many pieces to the puzzle as it needed to (and maybe too many pieces in the anime that are actually from a different puzzle).
This is also the only arc in which Nico Robin has to collaborate and work with the rest of the crew, instead of going off on her own to do her thing, without this arc there's a lot less emotional attachment to her
@@BleydXVI I guess it would be more accurate to say that LRLL does well to establish Luffy's IDEAL of not wanting to abandon any of his crew, which gives room for this ideal to be properly challenged in following arcs. Usopp is a good test of this because he, more than anyone else, does come the closest to being left behind (until he finally apologizes). Luffy didn't WANT to leave Usopp behind, but he heeded Zoro's perspective that Usopp's respect for their captain needed to precede any potential forgiveness on their part. Luffy's resolve to not lose any of his crew is made most firm by the time we watch him and Sanji go at it in WCI. We do have to wonder a little if even they can resolve that conflict and facilitate Sanji's return from such an abusive situation. As you said, LRLL provides the right puzzle pieces for letting this theme organically fall into place across the series. So I think we can all agree at least somewhat that it does serve some long term (long land) narrative purposes.
Just a reminder that he went on those stilts around the same time the Post Marineford Flashback occurred. Like Ace was releasing conquerors on fodder pirates while that man got on those stilts
Wow, the Anime really did this arc dirty. It all makes so much more sense in the manga. It's no masterpiece but the filler they added to it in the anime really drags it down like a devil fruit user in the ocean.
Filler context: in manga, there is only 1 DBF - the barrel-boat race is lost and Foxy gets Chopper, Zoro and Sanji win him back, Luffy fucks Foxy up (cause he can't just drop the game, he gave his Word TM on his Pirates Honour TM to play).
Just you wait, Luffy gonna finesse Buggy out of being king of pirates with a Davy Back fight, then MFers will be on the "oh I love Long Ring Long Land" lies
This is the MOST HILARIOUS explanation of any arc that I've ever heard from anyone bruh. I'm struggling to not LoL at work right now because we aren't allowed to have earbuds in on the floor and I'm clearly not talking to anyone 😂😂😂
@@Mugiwaranogoofy Calling him Prussian Waluigi has been an inside joke between me and my best friend, because he looks like Waluigi and has the same dub voice actor as Prussia from Hetalia, a show my best friend is a huge fan of.
Monkey D. Dynamite 🤣. I absolutely LOVED Luffy in an Afro and it needs to make a reappearance in the arc when they find the one piece. 🤣❤️ Great video!
Also Mugiawara, you're really helping me go through a hard time! You and my best friend look like brothers and it feels like he's right here carrying me through this hard time. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for being here man! I wish you all the best for your channel
I never realized how much they added to the anime version of this arc. I watched everything like 15 years ago or more so i cant remember the anime arc, but im rereading now and wow this arc is so much less in the manga. Only 1 davy back fight, 3 rounds. They lose chopper, take him back, take foxys flag.
I know right? Like i JUST reread it last week and i was blown away by how short it is its insane. But in fairness its missing a good amount of the anime comedy too
When talking about this being a filler or not, it’s often mentioned that the anime made it longer. What no one brings up is that it also makes it more stupid (not the good kind). In the manga: Foxy SHOOTS the horse (like, with a real gun) for no good reason, Luffy understandably gets angry and accepts the game to teach them a lesson. Game 1: Straw hats loses Chopper Game 2: Straw hats wins Chopper back Game 3: Straw hats take Foxy’s flag. Short and sweet, just a few chapters, enter Ao Kiji. In the anime: Foxy shoots the horse with a net, that somehow makes him own it(?). Luffy gets angry (it’s just a net dude, just cut it off), accepts the duel. Game 1: lose Chopper Game 2: Luffy takes the horse back??? You’re risking your crew mate for a horse with a net around its legs? Game 3: win Chopper back Then 3 more games! It’s just way too much. So yeah, the pacing of the manga is soooo much tighter and better than the anime, even for OP standards.
The funny thing is that this was unironically one of Usopp’s most powerful moment, dude just absolutely manipulated Luffy into believing that the Afro made him nearly invincible. Hell, he even got to wear the straw hat
You can dislike something all you want but fact remains that it would make sense unless you want Luffy and shanks to try to kill each other??? I'd rather see a Davey back fight. With shanks crew it would be wayyyy more intense
@@benasay8279 No no, it's not that I don't like it, I just find it funny that this arc is so random and adds so little to the story that so many hope it becomes relevant in retrospect. However, it's still fun as a side quest that the Straw Hats fell into right before one of the biggest arcs in the series.
While LRLL isn't the greatest it serves its purpose. It gives us a break between two huge arcs with high stakes. It also introduced Wings of Pirate King with Zoro and Sanji fighting together for the first time (and from the moment they agreed to work together they didn't say a word showing that they have a great teamwork if they want to) It was also an opportunity for Oda to show some wacky parts of OP world building like Davy Black Fights. I feel that Oda had it in mind but couldn't put it in any other arc So yeah, not peak but it gave us Afro Luffy so I'm not complaining
The difference between manga and anime on this arc is night and day. People that hate this arc clearly have only watched the anime and not read it. Short 3 games, aokiji encounter, then on to one of the best arcs in one piece.
Foxy quickly became my favorite One Piece antagonist. Every time he appears after this, it feels like finding Patches in a Soulsborne game. You know he's going to betray you at the end, but you'll let him b/c it doesn't really negatively impact you that much, and it's funny, so it's worth it. Also, coincidentally, I just watched the Nebulandia movie for the first time last night (binging One Piece movies after finally becoming current w/ the anime), and immediately the next day, this vid drops, lol.
It's honestly glorious how later filler arcs make Foxy even more of a Team Rocket style jobber than BUGGY (like Buggy somehow at least got shit done whether it was his intention or not)
I can honestly say that this is the first time I have ever enjoyed this ark. I will never watch the original again cause I wanted to pull my hair out, but I'll watch Mugiwara recap it any day of the week.
Are we ever gonna get an Impel down is hilarious? Cause a crack head breaking into a prison only to be rescued by Tim curry from rocky picture horror show is hilarious
The part where Luffy is chasing Foxy around the ship was already the funniest part of the whole arc and your roast commentary on top of it elevated it from a 10/10 to an 11/10.
This made my day and I'm glad you brought up the best movie of all time Black Dynamite. Thank you for making these and I'm excited for the next one! Crossing my fingers for a Big News Morgans and Jimmy Scoops update.
I'm mostly excited for Enies Lobby is hilarious because I'm curious on how he'd spin the narrative that CP0 Agents are completely justified in their World Government quests.
You do not know how much I have been waiting for the next episode of this series, on a day I really needed this. Thank you brother and may God bless you and your family 🙌🏼✝️
Came back to this after yesterdays chapter. I needed to remember the greatness of Foxy ant his split head. The new sharpie moustache is kinda criminal, but I still love him 🤣🤣
This is my favourite way of re-experiencing One Piece. All the great, ridiculous and funny moments wrapped up in your brilliant commentary truly are a masterpiece
Zoro must be an insanely good teacher to teach Luffy how to skate in 3 minutes, like he could probably teach someone swordplay in a day and full Santoryu in a week.
The filler that's canon. Only way to fix this is for someone in Blackbeard's crew having the slow slow fruit. It's especially bad being between water 7 skypeia and alabasta
@@GSSAGE7 I’m thinking BB or Buggy vs Shanks(or vs each other) before The final climax or Strawhats and Shanks at the very end over who gets the one piece. I can also just in general see a davy back fight over the ancient weapons considering there’s three of them and the only DBF we’ve seen had three rounds.
