Watch me react to Laura Escudé's playback rig for American Idol, plus some lessons from the rig on redundancy, flexibility, and affordability.
Laura was the world’s first ever Ableton Live Certified Trainer and is one of the pioneers of the playback world. She’s been gracious enough to walk us through the rig she’s using for American Idol, and it doesn’t disappoint!
After the short rig rundown video, I’ll give you some takeaways from the rig that you can use in your own setup. You don’t have to emulate a rig that costs thousands and thousands of dollars to learn something from it and apply it. So let’s see if there are some principles and concepts here that we can benefit from (and do it at a much more affordable cost).

I run a PlayAudio12/MIDI4+ rig with our tribute band, with two MacBook Pro’s in a redundant configuration. I wholeheartedly agree on never allowing the B system to automatically switch back to the A system upon receiving tone again. That can cause a lot of embarrassment if using Ableton Live, for many reasons, and doesn’t allow for the opportunity to diagnose what caused the failover in the first place. I am running click, cue, stereo trax as analog outs, sending MIDI through the PA12, a few DMX cues, and running video. We use the video out of the B system, so video is still present upon failover. This way if the B system were to crash we would only lose video, and everything else would still run (audio, MIDI, DMX. Plus, automatic video switching is clunky and expensive as best as I have been able to find. I have not delved into MADI or Timecode yet, and was curious if these are topics covered in your playback course? I’m considering a second career as a playback engineer, so I need to cover all bases.

Thanks Will! Question, Besides analog, What is the most used between MADi and Dante? I use Analog and Dante for now.

Dante tends to be more on the installed side (particularly churches/performance hall stuff). I think analog is still the most common, but seeing more and more MADI these days. Primarily from folks using Digico consoles.

@@fromstudiotostage looks like a great option! How would I address MIDI to both Macs? MioXM?
