Really well done video. I've been doing nothing but watching wrx videos since ordering mine. These IIR vids are better than most others by far. Tons of actually useful information. A seemingly neutral (just the facts) style of narration. And a very polished, professional speaker. Incredibly impressed. Subscribed. Can't wait to see what you have in store.
It’s quite low stress now ever since they increased the bore size, whilst maintaining sidewall thickness, it’s a slightly bigger engine. I’m pretty sure it’s able to take more abuse, much like how the K24 was the most adored Frankenstein for building power. Not too keen on the new WRX tho.
"Abuse" = key word. A person can have fun with a car without "abusing" it. If "abusing" is what most people are doing who then bitch on the websites, comment sections, etc. then it invalidates virtually every complaint, including warranty coverage. If you've been around a while, you know modding under warrant is a big roll of the dice, for example. Years ago, smart guys bought used cars, saved a ton of cash, and being beyond warranty nothing really mattered. Additionally, back then - i'm talking late 80's into the 90's, in the Mustang/Camaro crowd - I never heard anyone gripe about parts being shit and pissing on the dealers. They all took ownership of the abuse they dished out and chalked it all up to that. It simply wasn't worth arguing a blown diff on a supercharged 5.0 was due to a shitty diff from Ford. But things changed, and part of it is the age level has dropped way down. The owners of the $30,000 - $60,000 (MSRP to modded costs) has dropped significantly. Proof? I can drive through my kid's high school parking lot. Even in my personally small pool of families I know with boys there's two that received STI's for graduation. My kid got a Sonic, will get enough money to get him through school, along with a nice laptop. (And those other families? They're not all any significant amount higher incomes - they just want to be sure their kid has street cred, apparently. They will trash those cars, and be on NASIOC and iWSTI bitching about the dealer not covering their crappy transmissions, head gaskets, ringlands, syncros, etc.
@@Tomas.X I never understood why a kid was given any car, even a POS for graduating highschool. All you have to do to graduate hs is show up and turn in an occasional assignment. Why reward someone for basically nothing? I had to work to save up for my first car
A note to add. The difference in boost/power from 10-12 lbs on the FA24 and 21 lbs on the FA20 is due to the compression ratio of the engines. The FA24 is a "high" compression engine at 12.5:1 vs the FA20 at 10.6:1. This is why you need less lbs to make the same or more power. This will be a good thing as the higher compression will provide good power at low RPMS, which is where most turbo engines lack power.
That’s the FA24D in the brz you’re referencing. The FA24 in the wrx has 10.6:1. It has less boost because the engine displacement is larger already. So less boost is required to achieve the same power as the outgoing engine.
Incredible vid! Well spoken and quite informative. The more I learn about the new WRX the more it grows on me. Function over form, plus I’d feel less guilty slinging this around on some dirt/gravel roads.
I know this isn't about looks, LOL...but it can never be avoided. Having now seen one in person, the best thing I can compare it to is my own 2011 STI. I did not believe this generation looked good based on photos, but will never forget going to the movies and seeing one in person - red, and the sedan and spoiler was back, baby - and it's curves, it's hips, stance, all of it, looked great. Numerous modern cars are impossible to appreciate based on photos because their design elements are so complex versus many years ago. And one huge thing - Subaru photographers need to be replaced. The nose on the 2022 looks awful in many photos, all pointed and sticking out too far. Then look at it in profile and it's not like that at all. It's a trick of the paint/grille/black lower fascia. In person, you have to work to get into that position and see this. And that rear end, the tail lights? Again, in person (especially the taillights) look far more proportionate, and the "lava" design is F'ing cool. The lower section, eh, it is too much. And I feel like shooting the next moron that says the interior is "improved, but it's no Audi"...OMG...who cross-shops a WRX with an Audi, much less expects them to be the same. The interior is fantastic. My GT is on order, and I opted for the three alcantara section wraps. And on the outside - I was going to get white but opted for grey, so it will be a twin to our Crosstrek - but I plan to take it to my local vinyl wrapper for OEM color match wrap of the fenders, rockers, and sections of the front and rear. I do wrap, but would prefer a pro do it on a new car. I also do hobby photography, and will post photos anywhere I can to spread the word this is one cool car.
Damn I learned a lot, great video. Just ordered my 2022 WRX yesterday. Went with the base model (added short throw shifter, couple of small things). Wanted no frills, light as possible stock, will take it to COBB later this year. I have a 2021 Ascent, and just love the thing (tows my boat like a beast, everyone loves the ride etc.), but missed my 2014 WRX badly. So for the first time, I'll have two "new" Subarus (my Ascent has 5,800 miles on it, lol). Test drove the 2022 yesterday, without reading ANYTHING about it online (I prefer less to have a less diluted opinion on things). Came to the conclusion that the new WRX was refined, in almost every single way. Refined to the point of not having any loveable "rough edges" and that's a good and bad thing depending on your perspective. This will be the first time I tune a Subaru where I'm not worried about pushing the motor too hard, I expect to get it to about 350/300 with Cobb, I don't go too crazy there, just want a bit more bump. Should have it in about 8 weeks time.
The FA24F is actually in a lot more vehicles than just the Accent. The Outback and Legacy also have a the FA24F as a option, even the BRZ/GR86 get the FA24D NA variant now too. Not sure how similar the internals are but very similar engine overall.
Ordered a black one today. Hasnt been built yet wont get it till about August the dealer said. So stoked though. Thanks for this video man. Very informative.
I'm impressed at the speed in which parts are coming out for this car... ETS aleady has an Intercooler and intake... so many companies already have exhausts, and cobb is going to have a tune by the end of the year... what a great time to be alive.
@@SkinnerMcBride nah bro, Toyota own 30 percent and Hunter Biden owns 51% of Subaru and Toyota. They want all EV just to fuck with them Trump blowers.. They going ape shit right now
WRX and their never ending transmission woes. I understand, that you have to differentiate between the STI and the WRX.. But the way some owners drive them? Ooof!! A well documented video, guys.. Looking forward to more as time go by, or you learn/discover more.
I drove a 2020 outback with the 2.4 turbo and it’s amazingly fast!! Like way faster then a off-road capable family wagon needs to be….An Outback with the more common na 2.5 boxer feels and drives amazing already, it’s not fast like the turbo but it’s powerful enough to do everything an outback owner needs it to do and really is no different from the turbo model, plus it gets a bit better fuel economy which makes up for its somewhat average power….175HP is all you get and it’s enough power to make this lifted wagon fun and enjoyable to drive anywhere, on-road or off-road, The standard 2.5 naturally aspirated flat-4 boxer engine feels just about right for it, especially since off-roading don’t require a lot of power and even then it has plenty of power for doing some really fast desert passes and it gives you so much confidence when going fast fast thru the Desert, like it was designed for it….The suspension just soaks up all the off-road terrain, giving you nice and soft rebounds that just give you so much confidence and makes it that much more rewarding to drive and awesome to own! So the turbo outback is indeed the more bad ass of the two to own….but power is not the reason why the outback is so freaking awesome!!!! It’s the 8.7 inches of ground clearance! it’s the very capable symmetrical AWD!! It’s the amazing driving dynamics!!! It’s tall and capable like a body on frame suv, but with great car like handling dynamics!!!! The optional turbo engine would just be a big ass bonus Cherry on top!!!!! And I like it like that!!!!!
Good video! I looked up the transmission part numbers and they are different. I am sure they are using the same casing though. Also, in the 2022 WRX, only 2nd gear has the same ratio, but all the other gears are slightly shorter in the 2022 WRX. Final drive is the same as well.
Is there a reason you didn’t get the new Sapphire blue? I ordered a sapphire blue but it’s not here till May. Was about to change to the WRB that’s available next week but my original order from February 17th is the sapphire blue limited and I’m thinking of just waiting it out.
Great overview of mechanical aspect of this model. I will stick with my 2015. For big power I will go with an IAG built block. Cheaper overall likely, faster execution time as there are years of developed and trialed aftermarket engine parts. Which I actually have lots of to support a built motor. Good luck with your development.
Here we are a year later and no sign of an STI. If you ask me, I think they intended to release an STI using mostly pre-existing stuff they had, but had to can it for their CAFE ratings. We’ll have a performance trim likely coming for the 2024 model year, which will probably bring all the STI trimmings except for the traditional power figures you’d expect.
With the end of the STI comes the end of the STI transmission. A Transmission that is just as strong as a T56 but it's four-wheel drive is now gone. To all WRX owners plead to Subaru to put the STI Transmission in the WRX.
I was thinking the same. Will they offer the sti 6 speed with adjustable center diff & r180 rear. All I really care about at this point, even if the STI name goes away..
Just going to change over leases from my '20 to a '22 this coming week. Looks like here in Canada we do still a spare tire which I understand is the same diameter as the 18" Dunlops. Will confirm when I get my Sports Tech model which supposedly is equivalent to your Premium.
WOW. The only reason I haven't bought a 2022 WRX is because I want the DCCD and SI drive system. If I confirmed that there was a way to install this on a 2022 WRX then I would buy the car instantly.
Great video - thanks for sharing all the detail! Always wanted either a WRX or an STI... if you had $35-40k sitting around, what do you think you'd sooner buy - a new 2022 WRX or a used 20/21 STI?
I would say it ultimately depends on what you prefer style wise. In that regard, they are especially different. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong either way 👍🏾
thank you for such a great video. i truly bel;ieve this car was being built with greater potential in mind, the chassis is far superior to the previous model, it just feels that halfway through development Subaru decided to start focusing on EVs seeing how the market is moving that way and scrapped the STI program..which is probably why only the WRX version has been release with no STI. the big question for me...would the STI 6 speed gearbox from the previous model bolt into the 2022 wrx??
Awesome video Cody and that damn DCCD controller has had me thinking the day you picked up the new WRX you said it looked like it may fit and damn if you weren’t right that’s crazy man they had STIs built and produced they should have just released a limited run of the STI like this is the final generation get it while you can we are only making 1000 so they are worth money in the long run I bet you can do an STI drivetrain swap on this car I mean when you were going over the shotty WRX transmission it’s all the same so is the driveshaft and rear differential you could STI SWAP this drive line and you got yourself a 2022 WRX STI you should not have to but I bet you can all the pieces seem to be fitting together
What I find Interesting is how Subaru America came out and said during the press launch, that they don't know what was done internally to the engine to handle additional power for the WRX and the STI. Before they killed it. Makes me wonder what is going on in Japan 🤦♂️
...Subaru Japan is in charge of design...Subaru America is in charge of selling the cars. SoJ will share relevant information about the new stuff that helps sell the car (safety, performance, styling), but they don't have to share how the secrets on how it was put together. I'm sure someone will tear down a FA24DIT block to develop blueprinted engine bits...but SoJ does not have to reveal how they did what they did...
Been very interested with how this car turns out, if I remember correctly the front suspension is the same exact suspension as the 2017+ Impreza hatchback/Sedan, and 2018+ Crosstrek (looking from subarus parts catalog and seeing crosscompatibility). The swaybar link being hooked up from swaybar to suspension to its connection point, facing away from the Knuckle (180⁰) towards the frame frame of the car and right under the Spring perch. Is this true for what it looks on the suspension. Currently own a 2020 Impreza hatchback. So it makes me wonder
I'm actually planning on trading in my 2020 Turbo Veloster in for the 2022 WRX and the videos have been a nice insight for me. I'm not very knowledgeable about cars so getting info about the platform has been nice
@@NBTIIRETROII AHH MAN IM SOOOOO JELLY. I ordered mine in WRB with extra goodies from the factory. I’m super stoked to hear a fellow owner who actually has the vehicle is in love with it. Thank you 🤙🏽
This is a great video. Them bolts don't make any sense. Should be zinc or something. I think they didn't do as good a job as everyone hoped. --Is the new 6MT the old 5MT that Subi converted to a 6 speed? Or, is it an actual 6MT that was in the STI?
Now that you have your hands on it, the stock 18’s seem so close to flush. Do you have a spacer recommendation to poke them just a few mm? Expecting mine in a 2 or 3 weeks. Thx!
20mm should be perfect to get flush fitment! We sell Noble Spacers which are really good! www.importimageracing.com/products/nol-ws-1143-20-561-b-noble-performance-wheel-spacers-5x114-3-20mm-cb-56-1-black-subaru-sti-2005-2020-wrx-2015-2020-pair
@@353darkesthour so don't and just don't run spacers. Be OK with the car stock and get to know it before you start slapping needless crap onto it. Then when you can afford a new set of wheels you can get the fitment you want
Tbh I was quite disappointed with the looks initially, but given how much it has changed overall. My money is still gonna be here, even if the Corolla GR is available.
gr Corolla seems to be better in every which way possible. it'd be a little different if there were still an STI varient to compete with it, but the 2022 WRX is truly just a let down
@@ImportImageRacing Thanks!! I live out in the country and learned that’s the best way to go. For me anyway. Summer tires are awesome. Just not during a winter in Illinois.
Nothing fits is like they want it to be that way no fun. At this point i would have regret getting one jaja thankfully you guys have the craft and resources to make everything work, you got thisss🤘
Boost is very much determined by heat and elevation. On a hotter day at a higher elevation the car will need more boost to make the same power. We're right about sea level here in Florida and haven't ran ours in temps above the 80s yet. But it's good info to know the car is adapting that much on its own!
You must not be familiar with Subaru. Those options will come later, along with a “limited run” color option that will be standard on their other cars, just not the WRX. They pull this shit every year or so. By 2025 you’ll be able to option Recaros, Brembos and some hideous color like light yellow for 50k. And suckers will buy it.
I saw the new WRX and the New York International auto show and it looks way better in person. The black fender liners don’t even stand out as much as they do in pics. The interior looks way more upscale too. It’s as if they put more effort into the car since there is no STI anymore
Very well done. As for the STI, Subaru has confirmed that they are not building a internal combustion STI. When and if it comes out it will be electric, probably a collaboration with Toyota. I bet they started working on an internal combustion STI, but scrapped it midway through to go electric due to a late decision from upper management.
And you don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to figure it had something to do with the GR Corolla roll out. Guess who's the bigger player in the Toyota/Subaru relationship? It's a shame. I would have loved to see what the STI folks could have done with the new platform. Lots to like with the new WRX...
@@hyde_official nothing, no management from Subaru or Toyota had say in this, Higher up government officials are the ones that get to make the decisions ultimately.
Didn’t see any other comments about it but the VA WRX also had an aluminum turbo inlet with coolant lines for the Canadian spec cars. Oddly enough my 2017 has the USDM plastic inlet 😂
Eyy, new 2022 WRX owner here. I drove it off the lot today, I was at a red light shortly after and the car seemed to have some “idling issues” I’m a car enthusiast and love to drive but I’m a plumber not a mechanic, not sure how to explain it other than..it seems like the engine is shaking in idle, acceleration and shifting seems perfect and normal cruising seems all normal, but this stood out to me on idle, any one experiencing this? Is this normal, or should I be driving back to the dealer ASAP?
Btw new wrx for canada market has spare tire. Unchanged transmission is probably a cause why this car makes the same power as previous gen. And that finding about DCCD panel is impressive but it makes me so sad.
@@elsusc2547 my knowledge is based on videos of Tyson Remmelg youtuber, he works at subaru dealership in Canada. He showed real cars arrived to them and they had spare tire, so I think you will get one.
@@elsusc2547 sales lady told me there is one, I even asked if I can out a full size she said it should fit, blew a few tires on pot holes here in Quebec. That kit would be useless.
I wonder since Cobb stopped supporting e85 tuning capabilities if this car will make more power than previous gen. It definitely has the capabilities but will aftermarket support allow it.
Cobb just suspended it, they have a Nextgen kit on the horizon that they will be supporting that will get input from a different non-emissions location. Hopefully that will also arrive on this chassis soon! Some people have already made 300-320 whp with a JB4, drop in filter, catback and 3 gallons of e85 for an octane booster. Looks promising!
Based off the rumors and such the decision to axe this generations STI still makes no sense. Its take 5-10 years to develop a new car and for them to do it during the same year that it was suspected to release is very suspect
@@LJ-mp7ir if the reports about the exec's at the dealers meetings are true, I doubt that highly. Theres no way they kept the dealers in the dark as long as us.
Haven’t they said the STI is cancelled not delayed? The DCCD definitely fits because they had planned an STI version but I’m sure the poor reception of the WRX helped kill it.
It’s cancelled for this generation. We won’t see an Sti until the new chassis comes out which tbh people say it will be 5-8 years which is probable but I think I could see them ending this generation even earlier. Maybe we could see the Sti in 2-3 years!
Wait why is the new differential controller not on the new WRX and why is it relevant that it fits? Did subaru give some weird reason to remove it or something? Or is it because maybe we can add it back?
That's the center diff control for the STI for the last 2 generations. And it never fit into the last 2 generations of wrx because the sti got its own exclusive center consol so ther wrx didnt have a hole for it and would rewuire the whole consol be swapped. But it fits perfectly into the new WRX
Excellent video! Makes me wonder what the specific upgrades for the STI will be? If I had to guess, upgraded IC, higher boost from same or better turbo, but those two alone don't seem enough to earn the STI name? Perhaps they'll use the same FA24 in the BRZ that has the hybrid injector system, but that seems to mostly help clean the valves and warm up the engine from cold.
Mines coming in July. Just leased it for 3 years. I'm hoping in that time they'll make some improvements. But I doubt it. Cars like this is are dinosaurs, and will soon go extinct. Enjoy them while you can enthusiasts.
I used the builder and optioned out a limited version and was deeply disturbed with the outcome. It was over $41k for a limited with all the STI goodies and some interior options. I could only imagine what an STI would cost if there was one.
@@ianholmquist8492 my 21 STI was roughly the same, between 39-40k out the door.
