The 2022 Subaru WRX is a completely new car, and for that reason it brings with it a lot of unknowns. We had a lot of fun driving the new WRX on track, but what about the new engine? Does it have potential compared to the outgoing WRX and STI?
Well, now that Cobb has released their AccessPort and Tuning software for the car, we are going to be able to find out.
Harvey (the owner and head tuner at The Boostcreep LTD) invited us to his shop to take a look at the results he got on the stock WRX, the new Cobb Stage 1 map, and to talk about what results he got with a bit of tuning as well.
Does the FA24DIT engine in the 2022 WRX have potential? Tune in and find out!
Here is a link to the 2022 WRX Cobb Accessport on the Flatirons Tuning website:
www.flatironstuning.com/cobb-...
To see what Harvey is up to, follow this link to his website:

This is actually the short version of the conversation that Harvey and Jon had about the new WRX. The full version will be available on our Patreon page.
In this episode:
00:00 - Intro
00:30 - 2022 WRX First Impressions
01:35 - 2022 WRX Stock Dyno results
04:20 - Cobb Stage 1 results for the 2022 WRX
06:02 - Pump Gas Stage 1 Custom Tune results for the 2022 WRX
08:08 - E30 Custom Tune results on the 2022 WRX
10:42 - How do these results compare to the previous WRX and STI?
11:32 - The 2022 WRX has lots of potential
13:00 - Final thoughts

Exciting to see this new update for the 2.4l. The vb is starting to grow in the community and this will make it even more popular. From the sounds of it, the transmission is the same as the va and is the weak point at more power. Do we know what power that transmission is limited to?

Nice to see these gains for those that just want a tune and a cat back, but for the future potential to make more power, the elephant in the room is certainly the transmission. Sure it took $5k to reliably make >400hp with an STI, but then you had a bulletproof transmission, DCCD, front and rear LSDs, and track-ready Brembo brakes. We can now assume that the FA24 will easily push >400ft-lbs with simple bolt-ons and ethanol, but that’s going to grenade the transmission, which seems to be the exact same part as the ‘15-21 WRX. We don’t even know if the STI transmission and diffs will bolt into the VB chassis, but even if they do, the swap is >$10k. Plus, you can’t add that kind of without upgrading the brakes, which will be another $2k at minimum for the base ‘15 STI 4-pot/2-pot caliper setup (and that’s if you go with remanufactured parts).
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning Год назад
Thanks for the comment. The WRX has never had the strong drivetrain that the STI had, and that has always been a challenge. I'm sure that down the road, it will be possible to put an STI 6-speed into this WRX. We'll just have to wait and see how many people decide to do that. I'm somewhat wondering how many people with STI's will want to try to swap in an FA24DIT power plant. If it has the potential to offer a lot of gains over the EJ, it could be worth it.. Definitely not simple, that is for sure. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
@blueridge8992
@blueridge8992 Год назад
@@FlatironsTuning FA24 into a VA chassis doesn’t seem worth it at all though, yeah? The engine mounts and accessory mounting locations are all different. It’s far from your typical Subaru Lego parts swap. From what I’ve read about those that have tried it so far, the cost of the swap itself outweighs the ~20% power gains that you might get over a similarly modded EJ. Remember that cookie cutter 700hp+ EJ25 builds are all sorted and doable in a weekend now. Imagine the R&D that’s going to be needed to get FA24s to that point. I don’t think ANY FA20 have survived anywhere near that power level for more than a few pulls.

Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. What about raising RPM'S with the beefed up beehive valve springs?
@FlatironsTuning

Thanks for the question, It really seems like this engine is designed to make power in the lower rpm range Based on the falloff of torque, I don't think that there would be a ton to gain from revving higher. For some reason Subaru is massively understating the stock numbers coming from the N/A side of the FA24 in the WRX and BRZ. Even at the quoted numbers they give for the BRZ, and assuming around a 10-15% torque loss for the compression difference, the WRX at 12psi would be around 300bhp at the crank @5500 rpm. 240-250whp doesn't seem out of line to me.

I know I'll get a lot of hate here, but you guys thinking on tuning a SPT (cvt) WRX 2022?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning Год назад
Thanks for the question. The issue with the CVT transmissions is their torque capacity is down to the friction of the belt on the internals of the trans. If you turn up the power, which it now looks like it is fairly easy to do on these cars, it could be easy to overcome the coefficient of friction on that belt. If you do that, then wear will start to occur very quickly, which will also lead to problems, or a failure. In short, because of the risk of causing damage, I'd say it just would not be worth it on those transmissions. Maybe at some point there will be a tested or proven path to modify CVT cars up to a point where the transmission is still working well, but I don't think that has happened yet. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

Thanks for the question. For the stock car, the peak power comes at the very top of the rpm range. But when you start tuning it, you can get the torque to come in much earlier, so it would make a big, big difference in acceleration. Driving the stock WRX, it feels like a naturally aspirated car, and I think that Subaru did this on purpose. But it now looks pretty clear that it will feel a lot more like a WRX/STI when tuned. And I'd bet it will feel a good deal faster. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

I think the important thing to mention here while comparing this car to a VA STI is that the point of the STI is not extra horsepower. Go pull up the dyno sheet for a new 5.0 if you want horsepower potential lol. At least the 5.0 has an LSD. So what if it looks like the Camaro. At least it doesn’t look like a crosstre fell from the sky onto a base civic The horsepower doesn’t mean much to me with the ‘22 wrx. I’d rather drive an STI with half the power. The ‘22 wrx has electric steering, open diffs, brake by wire, and 50/50 awd. None of these things appeal to me. The STI is the analog drivers car. The interesting thing will be to see what happens when the new (hybrid?) STI comes out. I still probably won’t want one due to the terrible driving feel and horrible sound. If I can rig up a new hybrid sti with UEL headers and hydraulic steering - sign me up lol

Conspiracy theory: since Toyota owns a share of Subaru there are rumors the STI was cancelled because it would interfere with GR Corollas hype/sales (the sudden announcement of cancelled STI makes it plausible). Do you mean.. potential to NOT be hideously ugly? Sometimes you have to move on, but making it ugly is a bad way to move on

This guy's numbers are way off. My FA20 made 237whp before mods. And the EJ makes way more power stock, too. The new WRX is garbage, we all know it. Ugly too

The VB absolutely walks the VA. There are several videos out on this already. The numbers in this video seem completely accurate.

Oh I'm pissed that I spent $21k on an STI, that I'm now $5k into an engine swap on.. I very nearly bought an orange '22....

Love my 22, but the STI is a beautiful ride

Good luck with the build. There are still going to be aspects of performance that the STI has the clear advantage in. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

The emissions stuff tho... ugh. Can't get rid of the TGV and the God forsaken EGR systems. I couldn't imagine tuning a car and leaving those in place.

I do understand, but that is likely the new norm for most of us. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
