Did you know that Kari the Mortician has a Facebook group (Funeral Directing 101) for students and apprentices who can connect with each other and consult with some licensed directors?! For the several years that the group has existed Kari has done many live videos talking about all areas of the business. Here is a throw back video from her education and LIVE videos with the members of that group....

I am a Social Services Director in a Long term care so we deal a lot with our residents passing away. We always try to get the families and residents an Advance Directives. We always tell the families to spend down by planning for the funeral. Kari something I use is called The 5 wishes. It’s a booklet that asks all the questions about what the person wants. Everything the outfit they want to wear to what songs they want. It has been one of the best tools that I use for families and the residents. It goes into details of the person’s wishes. I think you would love it. I can definitely tell that you always want to help your families.

I had never thought about the vast array of rearrangement situations. It does puzzle us at the hospice house how often the family has never even thought of what funeral home they will use even if nothing is prearranged. This can even be for patients who have been very much declining for a few days or weeks when death is certain and soon. Sometimes they have even told us they need to go around and shop for one after the patient dies. There is that denial phase of grief, and it is really evident in these cases.

Friends please get everything in writing. Don't take someone's word for anything. My Mom passed away on Mother's day this year . She purchased her plot when my Dad passed so she would be beside him. At the time (1998- on Christmas day) he passed. The next day we were at the grave yard picking out plots. We were in shock because he had a massive heart attack. The person who sold my Mom their plots told us it would cost 100.00 to open her grave when she passed. We weren't thinking to get it in writing. So when Mom passed we go to the cemetery office to give them the deed to her plot. We were informed we needed to pay 2,000.00 to open her grave. Big shock..they said that the cemetery had been sold a few years ago and that they charge 2,000.00 to open them unless you now prepay them 600.00 . Gee it sure would have been nice to have known that!! So PLEASE get everything in writing and make sure your family knows where all your papers are.
@squalli1297
@squalli1297 2 года назад
I agree. Our parents & grandparents purchased their cemetery plots & crypts many years ago. Inflation & changes in ownership can place a heavy burden on families. Grave openings & closings are becoming more costly with time. I was in the FH business & it came as a shock to be faced with a charge which was almost as expensive as cost of the gravesite bought in the 60's. Unfortunately, openings & closings are charged at need, not when graves were paid for years ago. I'm not sure if any cemetery would include this fee in the total cost if pre-paid. Opening's & closings can be upwards of $1500 today which is what keeps them running. Families don't like to talk about funeral arrangements until they're forced to, & then there's a scramble to find pre-arrangement papers if any. Since my wife's death 2 years ago, I've provided copies of all paperwork necessary so when I die, my family will know what to do & where everything is. My condolences for your loss.

I've had families come in to shop and those whom actually made pre-arrangements for impending deaths. It's a good thing to ask them the purpose of their visit when meeting them since most are walk-ins. It eliminates the awkwardness of the meeting.

I'm 38 and diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. In short I have a heart condition that may or may not worsen. Obviously seeing the cardiologist regularly will help but truth be told no day is promised. It has crossed my mind to maybe start seeking out pre arrangements, most likely with the same funeral home that cared for my mom 2 years ago. Any thoughts? Thanks!

@KaritheMortician

You don't need to transfer the prepaid acct just go work with a new funeral home and bring them the account info from the insurance/trust company and they will handle the transfer when the time comes

If an elderly person has Pre Planned their funeral please also make sure that they have been paying on their funeral or that they have it paid off especially if their minds aren't good. My father made his funeral arrangements however he forgot to pay anything on it & we didn't know that until after he passed away 🤷🙄

I know preplanning is a way to keep funeral costs from rising. Does that apply when preplanning is done with the intention of using insurance monies? I preplanned with that in mind but I don't remember if you need to prepay also.

Hi Kari😊I have watched almost all your videos and I always learn something new. I was curious as to why you don’t like the word “passed” but prefer “died”? I always say that the person passed on because it brings me and others comfort during a very difficult time. I believe my loved ones have passed on to heaven and we will be reunited one day✝️ I find the word “died” so harsh and final😭I don’t know why your comment jumped out at me but it did. Thanks again for your videos-GINA PETERSON

Is it wise to prepay for your entire funeral cost upfront or should you pay over time, how does it work
@squalli1297
@squalli1297 2 года назад
All funeral expenses must be paid by the date of the funeral. With pre-arrangements, expenses can be paid as much as the family desires. However, all expenses are due by the date of the actual funeral service. I hope this helps.

My question is about an autopsy. Why can't a family request, no autopsy & they have the final word? I understand why It could be important, It just sounds so gruesome. Like there gutting an animal? This is really upsetting to even think about if this is going to happen or already has happened to someone you love. I don't like this at all.
