In this talk at the 2006 Grace Evangelical Society National Conference, Zane Hodges answers the following questions: What does it mean that Jesus is the propitiation for the whole world? What did Jesus' death on the cross accomplish for everyone, both believers and unbelievers? Does anyone get sent to hell as punishment for their sins? Why do unbelievers go to the lake of fire?

I realized that since we have been crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20), to lose our salvation we would have to become “uncrucified”. This is an impossibility since it would require a power greater than God and God is the ultimate power!❤

Thanks for this message. Ive been thinking about this on and off because it looked to me as Jesus died for everyone and therefore came to the conclusion that everyone should be saved but that didnt seem quite right given continually being told to believe. Plus basically told thats a heretical view. Anyway this message makes a lot of sense to me.

Bob George used to teach that man isn’t saved by the death of Christ but the life of Christ Romans 5:10 The Death of Christ “cleared the deck for the Divine action of God giving Life to the dead” Hal Lindsey used to say that the death of Christ makes you a zero on the scale . The addition of Christs righteousness and life is what makes man acceptable Peter said in his Gospel we are born again of an “Incorruptible seed” 1 Peter 1:23. When we were born physically We were born of a Corruptible seed . Only through invoking 1 John 1:9 and “Repenting could I maintain forgiveness and salvation. Bob George response was The cross Removed this seed through the illustrations Paul used in Colossians 2:11 of Spiritual Circumcision and in Galatians 2:20 and 5:24 with Crucifixion . I’m so glad to have heard this sermon. I learned this some 30 years ago after 12 years of an Armenian legalistic background of individual sins post conversion can still send a born again believer to hell unless they confessed (1 John 1:9) and repented of every individual sin. UN repented sins could send a born again believer to hell. What these groups don’t mention is that another sacrifice would be required if there doctrine were true. A few weeks ago at my church I overheard a conversation where a saved believer was telling a new believer that only his past sins were forgiven. After salvation forgiveness could only be maintained by confession and repentance. Sadly if we teach what Hodges taught here , Christians flip out by saying you are giving out licenses to sin

Zane rightly points out that all sins were taken away at the Cross . All the work of Redemption was finished . All our efforts - like perseverance till death in an unknowable level (%) of behavioral performance (works) - cannot add or detract from His perfect Work . To think so is utter arrogance , at best . It amounts to insulting Him in favor of becoming one's own Saviour . Because that "job description" has already been filled .

@Alvin Fen So why did Jesus tell the woman caught in the act of adultery to "Go and sin no more"? (John 8:3-11). John 5:14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you. Luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Jesus was clear that “no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” John 3:3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” He was also clear that hell is an eternal punishment for those who do not obey Him Matthew 25:46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Second Thessalonians 1:8-9 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God,and that OBEY NOT the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9WHO SHALL BE PUNISHED WITH EVERLASTING DESTRUCTION from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power. John the Baptist Matthew 3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” John 3:18 explains in the simplest terms who will go to heaven and who will go to hell: “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” So, those who go to hell are specifically those who do not believe in Jesus’ name. To “believe” goes beyond a mental recognition of the truth. To believe in Christ for salvation requires a transfer of allegiance. We stop living in sin for ourselves, we forsake our sin, and we begin to live for serve and please God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Matthew 22:36-37; Mark 12:30). 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Zane is completely wrong Sin is the only thing that will keep you eternally separated from God.

@Alvin Fen The gospel call to faith presupposes that sinners must repent of their sin and yield to Christ’s authority.” In other words, a sinner who refuses to repent is not saved, for he cannot cling to his sin and the Savior at the same time. And a sinner who rejects Christ’s authority in his life does not have saving faith, for true faith encompasses a surrender to God. Thus the gospel requires more than making an intellectual decision or mouthing a prayer; the gospel message is a call to discipleship. The sheep will follow their Shepherd in submissive obedience. Jesus’ repeated warnings to the religious hypocrites of His day as proof that simply agreeing to spiritual facts does not save a person. There must be a heart change. Jesus emphasized the high cost of discipleship: “Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27), and “Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples” (verse 33). In the same passage, Jesus speaks of counting the cost; elsewhere, He stresses total commitment: “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that eternal life is a narrow path found by “only a few” (Matthew 7:14); in contrast, some seek to broaden the path so that anyone who has a profession of faith can enter. Jesus says that “every good tree bears good fruit” (verse 17); in contrast, some say that a tree can still be good and bear nothing but bad fruit. Jesus says that many who say “Lord, Lord” will not enter the kingdom (verses 21-23); in contrast, some teach that saying “Lord, Lord” is good enough. Paul and James taught that a true profession of faith will be backed up by evidence of faith. If a person is truly following the Lord, then they will obey the Lord’s instructions. A person who is living in willful, unrepentant sin has obviously not chosen to follow Christ, because Christ calls us out of sin and into righteousness. Indeed, the Bible clearly teaches that faith in Christ will result in a changed life 2 Corinthians 5:17 Galatians 5:22-23 James 2:14-26. What Hodges preached was a very wide path to the Kingdom of God not narrow like Jesus said. Again: A person who is living in willful, unrepentant sin has OBVIOUSLY NOT CHOSEN TO FOLLOW CHRIST, because CHRIST CALLS US OUT OF SIN AND INTO RIGHTEOUSNESS.

@Alvin Fen I don't whitewash sin. I've never in 50 years of faith ever heard any born again preacher say Sin will not cause anyone to go to hell. As scriptures I've provided show clearly the opposite is true. That's borderline, if not full universalism.

Repent means to change your mind.(Believe). God repented many times and He did nothing wrong. To repent is to change your mind about who God is, Who Jesus is and who you are. If you could repent of your sins Jesus work would be unnecessary. We already had the Law. So REPENT.Believe in what God has done FOR you through the death and resurrection of his Son Jesus. STOP your strivings and offer yourself as a living sacrifice because you can not because you must.

@@linjicakonikon7666 Repenting and turning away from sin means a recognition of my sins, which involves Godly sorrow, brokenness and a commitment on my part to change the direction of my life. Repentance is not an emotion. Its more than being grieved or feeling sorry about my sin and even having remorse. God wants you to humble yourself make a decision of the heart and mind [the will] to turn away from sin. Your life was going in one direction [sin] and you make a decision by faith to take your life in the opposite direction with His help. It is making a genuine 180° change of heart recognizing that sin(s) is against God. By turning from our sins to God we acknowledge we have disobeyed God. We have violated His law, offended his moral purity, tried to cast off his yoke of authority. It requires that we admit we have turned from God to sin. Repentance is the consequence of faith. Repent means change your mind about your sinfulled life ALL SINS INCLUDING UNBELIEF, false gods, witchcraft, self righteousness, idols etc. After repentance there must be a genuine change of life because living in sin is disobedience and rebellion against God and the end result will be destruction of the soul in hell. Repentance produces a new way of life, not just a different opinion of Christ,a new way of life. Those who heard Jesus preach knew what He was calling for. He wasn't asking them just to change their opinion about Him. They knew what Isaiah said when Isaiah preached. This is what Isaiah 1:16 says:wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight, stop doing wrong.17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.18 "Come now, let us settle the matter", says the Lord."Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. IF you wash yourselves, IF you make yourselves clean the progression begins internally and then manifests itself in attitudes, conduct and actions. There must be a change in conduct and how you live. You don't have to remember every sin, Jesus knows them all. Confess ongoing sins, and ask for deliverance of them and forgiveness of all sins. [1John 1:9] Repentance turning from sin - is a prelude to holiness. Hebrews 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy, without holiness no one will see the Lord. Walking in holiness begins with repentance. We should think about it as a lifetime daily discipline of our faith, necessary for a holy life as Jesus says in Luke 11:3-4. None of us are sinless.

Just like every other reformed theology is fails to understand its own paradigm. No mention of repentance is odd at the least. There is much to agree with here especially with the concept of Life and corruption (death to be more specific) AND even the understanding of the universal atonement. He is also right to reject the concept of "Limited Atonement. However, the paradigmatic pendulum swings. Except the meaning of propitiation or the atonement. This is built off the idea of merit swinging to the other extreme, and rejecting the idea of any effort on part of the sinner. In this teaching and many others the starting problem is still the same < I will not assume what that is at this point until my question is answered. With that said, my question, what did the atonement do? I did not get a clear answer from the video. Definitional "propitiation" is used in place of "atoning sacrifice" in many English translations. It is used in context of justification or purification. This does not just include the death of Christ, but also and MORE so the resurrection! His teaching doesn't seem to suggest a universal salvation, which is correct, but most certainly desired and God's will. Not willing that any should perish but that all should come to REPENTANCE!

I dont believe in ETERNAL hell. For one thing, how can Jesus have taken our penalty upon himself (which he did) and still be seated at the right hand of the Father. If the penalty for our sins is ETERNAL HELL then Jesus would forever be separated from the Father, which is impossible. Also, in 1Timothy 4:10 Paul says that Jesus is the Savior of the world, especially of those who believe.

@2Chronicles714_ Jonah 3:10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. Turning from evil ways = works according to the Bible. Therefore, by your definition of repentance, we must work for our salvation. You are turning the gospel into a contradiction. Repentance does not have an implied "of sins". If that were so, this same verse says God repented. Are you claiming God had sins He needed to turn from? If not, then you are conceding that repent does not have an inherent "of sins" following it, and thus your definition is not based on scripture. You are in grave error and are not teaching from scripture. If repentance from sins is needed to truly "believe", every single verse that mentions how to be saved that doesn't mention repentance is a lie because they are saying something will save someone when it won't unless they have more pieces. Your plan of salvation is completely contradictory to the gospel message.

@Laugic False teachers use this one scripture to "prove" repenting of sin is works. Jonah 3:10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways,(evil works) he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. They turned from [means Repented in Hebrew] their evil ways WHICH CAUSED GOD TO NOT DESTROY THEM. Jesus reaffirms this in Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they REPENTED AT THE PREACHING OF JONAH, and now something greater than Jonah is here. They repented [changed their minds] of their evil works which pleased God.
