What Do You Do When You Forget Someone's Name? 

Forgetting someone name is so embarrassing! Especially when it’s someone that you should know their name.

A simple “what’s your name again bro? I’m trippin….” Should work every time 🤷🏾‍♂️

I just hugged and act like I know while I use conversations to hide my not knowing the name.

Ask them “how do you spell your name” come up with an excuse like having to save their number again or something

Lots of Teachers in my family. Students ALWAYS believe YEARS later that the Teacher remembers you and INSIST on walking up to them in public. Just play it off with… Precious, Sweetheart, Baby… of course I remember my Best Student.

Chile! I was just laughing with a friend about this woman came up to me in Walmart and had a whole conversation with me. She asked how my parents were doing and my brother who lives about an hour away. So she clearly knew me and my family personally. So I ended the conversation with it was good seeing you again. I walked away with who was that. It took me about 2 days to realize this was one of my mother’s good friend’s daughter who does indeed know us but I hadn’t seen her in years and she looked a little different.

Wait for someone else to call them. So I know

Got a great story about forgetting someones name during a sold out comedy show where I was the host. About 20 years ago, I was the MC at a show in Arizona. sold out. It was a huge night for me because I was the MC for shows with the great David Allen Grier who just like most my age grew up on watching him on In Living Color and other shows. Never did I imagine watching them as a kid that one day I would be right along side them performing. Big night! I'm ready! I did radio with him, going toe to toe with him on LIVE radio promoting the shows all week. I was mad geeked!!! SHOWTIME! As I am headed up to the stage to kill this show I f@cking forget this dudes name! Holy s$it I was thinking in my head. I was pancing inside and couldn't let it show. I was like what the hell am I going to do?! I smoove walk up on the stage like I had no worries and was like, ARE Y'ALL READY FOR THE YOUR HEADLINER? The crowd went nuts! They were loud. I was like, nah, y'all don't want to see him. ARE Y'ALL READY FOR YOUR HEADLINER? They hollard! I said y'all don't even know who you came to see. I said, WHO Y'ALL CAME TO SEE? They yelled out, DAVID ALAN GRIER!! As if it was scripted, I was like, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, YOU'VE SEEN HIM ON ETC, ETC, ETC! MY FRIEND AND YOUR HEADLINER, MR. DAVID. ALEN. GRIER!! Crowd went nuts and they were none the wiser about the moment of panic I was going through. Love that story because it was truly a growth moment as a stand up comic.

Most of the time the convo will lead to networking with me and I be like Uhh “whatchu want me to save you as” 😂😂😂😂

Sometimes I flat out ask them or I ask them how do I spell it…😂

That happened to me one time in my life back in the early 1990s at a busy shopping mall, and I was stupefied because of who was standing there with me. I apologized to the three people who were there, admitting that I don't know why I am not recalling the name of the one person I was with and verbalized honestly that I was baffled as to how it's possible his name was escaping me, because he was my boyfriend. So one of the men broke the awkwardness and just extended his hand and introduced himself to the other man. I just accepted the temporary embarrassment still saying, dang; I don't believe this. We all were perplexed, I'm sure. The person's name that escaped me in the moment probably felt hurt, I discerned, which was more important to me at the time, because it was personal not business. I was communicating fine, yet the name which was in suspended animation was a significant person in my life. I compare that "anomaly" incident to the common human experience of going into a room to get something and stopping dead in your tracks with a blank stare and then tilting your head for five seconds or so, because you "completely" forgot your purpose for going in the room. You can also say a general "hi" and do a small hand sweep and say "Please, introduce yourselves." with intention so you don't have to deal with the other etiquette battle of who should be introduced and who should be presented.

I never remember names, so I tell people from the jump "I'm terrible with names, but I never forget a face!" so when I ask the name in the future it's not really a problem or if it is I've said that enough to know that they forgot that🎯💯

Aside from just not being afraid to ask them to remind you again, sometimes the best way is to introduce them to someone else in a way that they introduce themselves... Like a "Ya'll met before?? Keith, this is..." then they typically take it from there for you

You can only ask them again one time and usually it has to be no more than the 2nd time yall are meeting. Unless it's been years since you seen them, then its appropriate to ask again.

If its not a common name, ask for pronunciation, if its something common, just ask what their name is, the awkwardness goes up exponentially the longer you refuse to face it. Imagine working with someone for 2 years and not knowing who you just got assigned secret santa.

I’ve also done it where I’ll have them save their number in my phone themselves but I ain’t see what they saved it as so I still don’t know lol

If I forget someone's name, I take a rrreally novel approach... I ask for it. 🤷‍♀️

I just say, _"I'm sorry, I'm not good with remembering names; could you please refresh my memory?"_ . Then I'll either write it down, associate it with something so I don't forget while the person is there... crack a joke maybe if they're not offended. Anything to try to remember.

I tell them that I forgot their name and then I apologize. (I'm not fake like the rest of you.)
