Aloha Justin! What an amazing and authentic video on getting started. I’ve dreamt of cutting gemstones for the past 15 years and I’m finally doing it. I’ve collected the amazing roughs gemstones. The faceting machine come today and I’m looking at several laps disk you suggested. Thank you! You made the process much easier then trying to buy lapidary stuff blindly. I think the next step is looking into your training to new cutters. Lmk what I need to do, and I’m on board.

Awesome video. At one time I bought a very expensive quiet machine, 20 copper laps, dops, transfer block, alcohol lamp wax... and an antique oak desk I didn't know how to use it. I was afraid to ruin it and so, I didn't touch it, eventually moved and sold it. Later, I bought a $20 lap and some polish and cut 3 dozen garnets at almost no cost. GREAT VIDEO. I'm still a novice but it's in my blood, this was wonderful.

Hello Justin just watched you video on crash course I ave been faceting for 20 years and the up and downs are amazing your so right when you talk about quartz for when polishing I use a horrible plain old vinyl lap and sit on the facet people sometimes ask about do you over stretch the facet I just tell them if this is for you then it is more in the hand and the pressure to well done for releasing a video on starting up a facet shop or studio well done 👍.

Hello. Singer oil is the oil for sewing machines. You can order online or get it in any sewing supply store and sometimes even hardware stores. For diamond powder, most of the brands are all the same. I like 0-5 for prepolish and 0-1 for final polish. I use diamondtech because it’s convenient to me here but whatever you can get is fine im sure.

What would I need to cut the stone if it's large?
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim 2 месяца назад
Large stones need the same gear and tools. However if it’s super large light football sized then it might not fit on the machine. Some people in the past have built custom giant machine to cut giant stones but this is not usual. I did a video about one of these if you search for Sinkankas Faceting machine.

Super random question but its worth a shot here. Im currently developing a mini cnc style robotic arm for faceting, potentially to design facets not possible by human hands.(concave curved facets with pointed facets in the rim on the curve) I was simply wondering if you have heard of anything like this. A buddy of mine coded an open source robotic arm for faceting but its not the most accurate. I plan on using a fixed\locked index system into the motors and gears so it doesnt have to rely on measurement computation.
@nathanielhartsuff2336

Also. Love your videos. Im from Detroit where our gem and stone scene is very capital and commercial. Not a lot of artists around here nor are there any groups in my area. Iv learned a lot from you and appreciate your dedication to the craft. Im currently making solid stone rings to create funds to buy a sterling faceting machine. If you have any tips for punching out solid rings with remedial tools.(Im working with rotary tools and vises\mounts) i would appreciate that tenfold.
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim 2 года назад
I saw something like this on Kickstarter. It was all plastic and didn’t look promising and the creator shared it with the faceting community and everyone was against it basically. Essentially I don’t think there is a market for this. Hobby cutters don’t want a machine to do their hobby and serious cutting factories need a giant industrial one that can do hundreds of stones per day. That already exists. So a smaller automatic machine is aimed at a market that doesn’t exists. Good luck.
@nathanielhartsuff2336
@nathanielhartsuff2336 2 года назад
@@JustinKPrim the goal was to create it simply for myself and research purposes. I want to play with light and stones hahaha I ended up completing the designs but it would run me a pretty penny just for a personal project so it's on the back burner until the funds are presentable. I learned a lot about different facets since then and it has only fueled me to create designs using algorithms and post processing math. I got the liberty to see a machine that someone called "The grail" in which it was a custom cnc style machine built on its own proprietary code, designed to engrave materials in a 3d space so he could do "sacred geometry" on spheres. It was honestly mind blowing to let my brain play with the possibilities

@jetaddict420 Год назад
@@JustinKPrim you are completely overlooking small batch production in this comment lmao wtf
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim Год назад
@@jetaddict420 yes but how many makers want to do this. I would guess less than 100, 50, maybe less than 20. In order to justify a lot of time on research and development, as well as the final manufacturing costs, you need to be able to sell a lot of machines, 500+ in my estimation. Otherwise the project loses money and wastes time. Also the Kickstarter I saw represents this well. If there was a market demand for this, the Kickstarter wouldn’t have failed. I say this as someone who has crunched all my own numbers and had a successful Kickstarter and someone who is currently crunching numbers for a new faceting machine project that I want to do myself.

I somehow fell into a rabbit hole of gemstone cutting despite never really looking into it before, and I have to say I'm very much intrigued by it. I'm curious though, is it something you can make a living doing? I have no knowledge on the subject but it seems to me that as an individual living in the UK or US, no matter how good you are, you'd be undercut by cutters living in countries with lower costs of living or huge factories that employ cutters.
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim Год назад
Yes you can definitely make a living doing it. I know a lot of people in America, Australia, UK, and Canada who are pro cutters and make a good living. You need to have the right skills and potentially be in the right place or at least connected to a network of jewelers that needs repairs, recuts, and new stones to buy.
@Metal-Spark
@Metal-Spark Год назад

@@Metal-Spark I got into it at age 30 and 9 years later I'm doing great. I got into it as a hobby and to (hopefully) make some money on the side. It's not easy or profitable starting out. It takes a lot of practice before your cuts are of a quality that customers would be willing to pay well for. The quality of the rough you cut and the time it takes are major factors. You can get some beautiful Rose de France amethyst fairly inexpensively, cut it very well and wind up with a 5 carat stone, then be offered $100-150 for it. If it only took you 3 or 4 hours to cut, that's a pretty nice profit for a piece of rough that probably only cost $10 or less to buy. If it took you 8 or 10 hours to cut though, that suddenly becomes a much less efficient use of your time from a money-making perspective. When I first started, a standard round brilliant took 6-8 hours to cut accurately, and more complex patterns could take as much as 12 hours. The overall point is that faceting is a fun hobby, but there's a level of skill in cutting, sourcing your rough, understanding the value of various pieces, and establishing customers that takes time, practice, and effort. Don't get into it and expect immediate returns on your investment. Just enjoy it for what it is, then transition towards earning a profit as your skills rise to the necessary level.

Trim saw to cut big rough stones?
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim Год назад
A trim saw is nice but not essential. I have two and I use them rarely. It’s not that common for us to get natural rough that actually needs to hit the saw. I find that I use the saw for synthetic boules more than anything else though once you have the basic tools, the trim saw is the next thing on the list!

Hello everyone ! I really need your help here. I just recently bought a faceting machine, and I'm lost in what supplements I should buy (especially about laps). I'm restricted in funds, of course. What cheap laps do I have to buy (and I can only afford a few)
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim Год назад
The best investment would be a batt lap for polishing as it can polish almost anything. For cutting laps, cheap toppers would be good for your budget. 360 800 and 1200 would suit you.
@tofu2129
@tofu2129 Год назад
@@JustinKPrim Thanks for the fast as lightning reply ! Copper polishing laps (60 $) are bad ? Batt laps are 150 $ from what I saw. Just want to be sure before investing or not. Thanks for your help.
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim Год назад
@@tofu2129 copper is very hard and won’t work well for many types of stones. It works well for sapphires but for tourmalines and beryl I think you’ll have a hard time getting a good polish. A tin lap would be much better. If you can’t afford a batt, a locally made tin lap will be best

Hello, Its usually not possible to identify a stone based on a photo. I recommend finding a local gemologist to identify. If you don't have anyone local you can send it in to get test to a lab like Lotus in Bangkok or GIA.

What about ventilation? Like a fume-hood? All that grinding and polishing would be aerosolizing the dust and chemical compounds found within those gems. I'm sure that wouldnt be a good thing to inhale even in the short term.
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim 2 года назад
There really isn’t much dust. All the cutting is done wet so any potential dust turns into mud and gets collected in the machine or sprays on the wall. For polishing we use an oil slurry which also captures the dust in a liquid medium which we wipe away.

@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim Год назад
Those robots already exist and they are cutting the worlds melee and a bit more. They are relatively new and the quality of the cut is still not as good as a human. Also they don’t read the rough, they just cut all the material the same.

I recommend getting what you need all at once and save on shipping... 96 and 80 is probably all you need but Sterling at least throws a 64 in as well though its not that useful.
