I was diagnosed with optic atrophy & the only thing I can offer to this video is that the vision is not cloudy (unless accompanied by cataracts) but blurred. Light has a huge impact on how/what I can see & contact lenses have given me clarity, although obviously they do not improve vision. I can not read the top letter on the chart but it is not due to clouding, its due to focus.

My vision is between 20/150 to 20/200. Might be higher at times. Does your vison fluctuate? Mine does and it is so weird.

@@jaidebeck Yes my vision fluctuates. So many things have an impact on it. If I walk into a dimly list restaurant for example, I am unable to see much at all. I've had thus diagnosis since the age of 4 & every day is different.

@@sarahs4806 my kid (16 years old) got diagnosed with this and has a opa1 gene mutation recently, his vision now is 20/40. how fast does this progress? how bad will it get? the doctor recomended he studied and got a job that didnt rely on vision as much, and that he probarbly wouldnt be able to read at all in aproxemately 10 years time, whats your first hand experience with this?

@@asle1111 At 16 I was able to read a study & read regular sized print. I am now 47 & over the years have noticed things becoming harder to see. I can't see regular print any more & reading street signs is difficult unless the background colour is right for me & they are close. I don't drive BUT what I can say is, everyone who has OA is different & there is nothing you can't do (except drive) that you can't adapt or find a way around. There is a tonne of software to help with altering websites to suit your needs. My sight is stable & has been for about 4 years now. I can see light perception out of my right eye & my left is blurred but this is helped by a -16 contact lens prescription. The main thing that really impacts day to day is weather conditions. Your 16 year old may not lose their vision but I think that whatever job they want to do they should go for. Employers have plenty of resources at their disposal to help adapt a work environment to accommodate. There is no reason your child shouldn't follow their ambitions. Some aspects of scientific medicine, driving jobs etc would not be possible but other than that I'd encourage your child to do whatever they wanted 🙂 Good luck!!

@@sarahs4806 thanks for the fast response, we will have a meeting with him and his teacher tomorrow to try to help him and figure out the steps forward about studies and work in the future, the goal is finding something he will be looking forward to work with , and at the same time something that wont get dangerous or to difficult over the years as the sight gets worse

Thank you for your information. I have had ambliopia from birth and now optic atrophy from multiple sclerosis from years of optic neuritis. This is finally the first time i have been able to receive help!

I was 13 when i got diagonossed with hearing loss. It took 7 year of different hospitals to understand whats going on with me and in between i also diagnosed with LHON Doctor said there is something wrong in my mitochodria which caused my vision and hearing loss. I am glad nothing is way too worse but definitely it affected me emotionaly. I dont have friends I feel really lonly and separated from the world.

This was so cool to see the differences in what you may see based on the eye chart. I am legally blind in the left eye at 20/200 with primary optic nerve atrophy. My right eye is now blind due to ROP and chronic narrow angle glaucoma. It was really cool and informative for me to see what 20/400-20/800 looks like. My sister-in-law is 20/700 without corrective lenses.

I was involved in an accident that caused traumatic optic nerve atrophy. It resulted in permanent blindness in my peripheral, low vision in both eyes. In my right eye I experience a flashing light that is there 24/7 even when I close my eyes to go to sleep, it’s debilitating. The flashing got worse over the past year, I went to the specialist, and they told me the cells are misfiring for whatever reason and there’s nothing they can do about the flashing. Is this common? Are there no treatments?

I was diagnosed with Kjers Optic neuropathy when I was 6/7 years old. And it's not "cloudy" vision like other glaucoma related diseases. But extremely blurry. I also get many colors mixed up, like shades of blues, organes and pinks. I am now 31 and my eyesight has only worsen slightly... I really wish there were some special glasses I could wear to at least help a little bit. I've never let my vision effect my mental health until recently. I went from a big city with excellent public transportation to a small town where they don't even have a bus system. Being a single mom it's difficult to get around. And coughing up $30 for a taxi everytime I need a ride somewhere, gets pretty expensive ...

I’m in the same boat. 35 years old with severely blurred vision. Glasses don’t help much. Can’t drive. It’s horrible.But the truly terrifying thing I’m facing right now is the possibility that my 10 year old daughter might have the same condition.

I have optic atrophy in both eyes and my left eye is 20/800 and finger counting at 5 inches away from my face. It isnt totally blurred out like what you represented. It is more like the colors are all smeared and I'm not able to process what I'm seeing. My right eye is 20/400-20/600. Again same phenomena just a little better acuity. However I also have alternating strabismus, exotropia, and astigmatism. So my brain doesnt recognize I have two eyes so it utilizes one at a time dependent on what I'm looking at. If I'm looking up close my left eye goes into focus and kicks the right eye out. If I look at something far away the opposite happens. I have no peripheral vision, depth perception, or 3D vision. I'm trying to get in touch with DHS in IL to hopefully get services back and I want to start learning braille as print is becoming too difficult.

I also have optic nerve atrophy in my right eye. It is totally blind and I can only see shadows. The vision is black and white and I can't recognize numbers, letters. Only shadows. Even you put flashlights in front of my eye, it won't be distracted even a bit.

I am from india and i am suffering from this. I can things up close but according to the distance the image gets blurry. My mother had this same condition so it is genetic. We have been visiting many hospitals since i was small but they say that no treatment is there. This really effects me a lot on my daily basis especially school. So please can you tell me what kind of treatment or things you provide to improve vision. This would be really helpful if you can explain.

I have this, I can only see out of 1 spot in each eye. Thank you bacterial meningitis. The 5 strokes didn't help either. So hard to find anything when you cant see anything but what you focus on

The only thing I haven't tried is syntonics, which seems to be gaining positive outcomes in recent research. Years and countless sessions of VT didn't really move the needle. I do wonder how light therapy impacts atrophy. At the end of the day nothing can repair a damaged optic nerve, but maybe you can be trained to better use what do you have? Or maybe exotropic peripheral vision is the best adaptation in my case?

Years of just using vision therapy did not give us very positive results with optic atrophy until we added syntonics.

I've had Optic Nerve Atrophy since I was a toddler. (Fun fact, no one had any clue I had it until my 4-K teacher told my parents I wasn't copying sentences off the board and I was making up my own.) It's hereditary in my case: me, my mom, grandfather, and great grandfather. The 20/400-20/800 filter is definitely not 20/400. That's what my vision has been for as long as I can remember and I can see a lot more than that though things are just blurry blobs unless it's really close. However, we did figure out glasses improve my vision to 20/100 or 20/150 when I was in high school. The 20/100 filter seems pretty accurate.

Hello Doctor. Thanks a lot for the explanation. I did a diagnosis past week, and it revealed that I had adie pupil (Symptoms are: pupil dilates all time, contract little when exposed to light, along with blurry vision for near or small things). I did another blood test, I find out that I am infected with taxoplasmosis and immuned from cytomegalov and herpes v. The thing is, after looking after what cytomegalovirus can affect, I find a common issue which is optic atrophy and chriorentinitis. I actually feel the first symptoms of blurry you showed. And is it in this case adie pupil as my doctor said, or is it an other disease caused by either taxoplasmosis or cytomegalov. And after all is it going to be treated. I am from Algeria btw. Per Dr. Julie: The blurriness could be coming from multiple things you mentioned. Make sure to visit an eye doctor and have them monitor you regularly.

For twenty years my daughter eye doctor never offer any suggestion or help. Even if I asks if their anything that be done they shut you down quickly. They just want you to come back every year for a checkup and wave goodbye until the next year. It's all about the money. My daughter loss her vision over night when she was 12 because she needed a shunt she never been happen since then.

Hi Brigitta Atrophy doesn’t mean not working it means not working efficiently. Typically people still have sight but it’s greatly diminished with OA.

Hi I was told in late February that my optic nerves have due to too many optic neuritis attacks I have spent the past three months watching my side absolutely crumble to the point of visual snow has happened my central vision is going fast and sub peripheral in my right eye no doctor will help me where I am as I personally don't think they have dealt with this I am definitely going blind really fast? I have had opa1 my whole life, current vision is 20/400. when I was a child i was 20/200. I have 5 children and recently had genetic test done on all of them, to discover 3 have the gene.

One thing I have to say is, most people in the general public don't have a clue what Optic Atrophy is. I have it in both eyes. And, yes eye Doctors would know. Because, I was curious, and asked mine. How many people he sees with it. It's common to them But, when I tell someone I have Optic Atrophy the majority of people never heard of it.

According to your video my vision in right eye is somewhat 20/200 Cause of optic neuritis not known It’s now two years but the sight is stable Had my cataract surgery of both eyes recently The eyes usually ache or I can say feel like tired eyes Especially in the morning when I wake I feel stiffness in my eyes They are at peace with sunglasses and reading glasses I don’t wear glasses otherwise as after surgery my let eye is 6/6 Will your syntonic therapy be beneficial I am from Pakistan Thanks

Good day I am from South Africa I have just a week ago been told of my optic atrophy in both my eyes I was told at the local hospital that my I file is being closed as they can't do anything more. I have spent the past week researching like crazy and listening to every single RU-vid video that I can on optic atrophy and what exactly is going on and what treatments there actually are. I came across your wonderful video today. 20/200 is the top letter on the original chart. I have 20/100 atm, but i don't know what's causing my vision loss. Two drs were talking and i heard optic atrophy mentioned. :/ Grrr. :(

Too hot to my comment I have multiple sclerosis and have had optic neuritis attacks which has led to the optic atrophy. I am only 30 years old with two small children and to have my vision like this is terrifying. I cannot read all type right now I have to use the speak of a microphone to type out for me. My vision is difficult to explain I see everything in a certain way and colours but it is blurry or really clearly especially if outside and light affects me horribly whether it's indoors or outdoors I am mostly in glasses sunglasses that. I can just make out the top letter e on an eye chart. I don't see faces clearly for example unless I go right nose-to-nose
