While gatekeeping isn't inherently bad from the perspective that a fanbase does require some sort of regulation, as to prevent people who have a very surface level perception of the material they are consuming to influence it too hard, the concept of "true fans" usually pulls into the darker side of gatekeeping, where one's general preferences are turned into unreasonable standards that serve as a bs excuse to silence opinions and discussion. There's a difference in saying "You're not really a Nirvana fan if you only like Smells like Teen Spirit, you're a fan of that song" (which is perfectly ok) and "You're not a true Nirvana fan if you don't own every CD, think album X is good/bad and immediately boil when you hear the name Courtney Love

Its simple, play the game. If you have just watched the Persona 4 anime but not played the game, you are a fan of the Persona 4 anime, not the Persona 4 game series. IMO if you play one game in a series, you are a fan of that game. If you play more than one game, you can be a fan of the series. To me this is because you can play one game in a series but not enjoy the other games. Lets say someone only played Persona 5, if they went back to Persona 4, 3, 2, 1 there is a possibility they won't like any of those games because of how out dated they are. They would be a fan of Persona 5, not of the Persona series. I have only played the new God of War 4. I am not a fan of the God of War series, I am just a fan of God of War 4.

I think being a fan and being a true fan are two sperate things being a fan is just enjoying a series and being a true fan is having a deep understanding and knowledge of a series

I feel like another problem is people considering themselves fans of a series when only playing one game. For example, a lot of people have only played Persona 5, yet they consider themselves Persona fans. I feel like it would be more fair to classify them as Persona 5 fans rather than fans of the whole series. Basically I think you can't really be a fan of a series unless you actually want to play more games in the series. You could like or appreciate the series for what it is but that's different than being a fan.

To me a "true fan" is someone who loves the world of the series or at least the parts of it that make it... It. I have NEVER beaten any of the persona games, in fact what started my love for persona and SMT was NicoB's playthrough of persona 5, I am also borderline OBSESSED with the Supernatural and Mythology or the Fantastique to phrase it better. (No, I don't mean fantastic, look it up) A "true fan" wants to enjoy as much of the series for as long as they can, even if they don't purchase any of their merchandise.

I think the gatekeeping comes from fans who dislike general audiences that are only attracted by memes much like the horrid Jojo community, or guests appearances like Ren in Smash. IMO, if you haven't played through at least 2 mainline games and acknowledge the spin-offs you're not really a fan.

I don't know what a "true fan" is, but I do know this: You can't call yourself a "fan" of something if you only enjoy 10% of it.

People who want to separate True Fans from Fakers must not realize that, for Atlus (or any dev/band/artist/whatever), people are basically divided between Fans and Potential Fans. That's why I don't get gatekeeping defenders. It literally goes against the artist's desire to reach as many people as possible. And Atlus, even though their games are pretty unique and niche, wants to reach as many people as possible. Just like any company would.

Requirements to be a fan: Do you enjoy it? If yes, congratulations! You are a fan.

My distinction is "Are you a fan of a part?" or "Are you a fan of the whole?". For example, don't say you're a fan of Dragon Quest if you've only experienced 11 and nothing else, just say you're a fan of DQ11 or the fans of Classic Sonic vs Modern Sonic. I think you can only be a fan of a series if you've consumed and enjoyed multiple parts of the series but if you've only enjoyed one or a very minute part, you're the fan of that part and not the series. You don't have to like everything, just more than one thing.

I’m a pikmin fan and I haven’t BEATEN any of them, I’ve played a good bit of pikmin 2 and I watched my dad play the game all the time as a kid and I have pikmin plushies that I’ve done plush photography of for a year But I’ve never beaten a pikmin game For me, I still consider myself a fan because I have a fair bit of knowledge on the series, very active to the community, and contribute with my photography.

For me a fan is someone that can hold a conversation about what they claim to be a fan about So I would say most persona fans nowadays are just persona 5 fans but that is ok A true fan would be someone who know almost all of what they claim to be a fan about That one person that could tell you the directors birthday

To me, being a fan just means you enjoy something to a degree, I love persona 3 and 5 which I’ve played recently so I consider myself a persona fan. I also love Star Wars, but I hate the new movies, but I’m still a Star Wars fan. I think the term is an each there own thing.

Fun fact: I've never played Persona 4 myself. I have only really watched playthroughs/let's plays of it, but.. i fucking love P4. Sure, i couldn't tell you shit about the bosses or how to beat them- but everything else is a yes. I know the story(all the events, etc) i know all the social links, but i don't know the bosses or the dungeons- does that mean i'm not a fan? Fuck, i even have the artbook for p4! I've never played Chulip either, but i love that game to bits. So i fully disagree with you on that part.

I am a danganronpa fan and was active back in 2017 yet never played a game because I'm broke. I never consider myself a Zelda fan despite loving and play most of their games on gameboy and DS. I dunno if I'll be considered a true fan since I don't plan on buying Royal because I'm saving my money for SMT V. I agree that all of these arse backwards methods of gatekeeping and the ensuing threat of shame and exclusion is indeed very inconsiderate of any given person's ability to support what they enjoy. In my case, I've been like 80% Nintendo only because a massive portion of the titles I like are on that platform so I'm relying on switch ports (and good ones at that) because I cannot justify buying another gaming system, or invest in a solid enough PC for a small number titles given my personal living situation.

I remember watching a thorough LP of a game I missed (didn't own the console) and thinking, "Man this game seems so epic, how did I let myself pass it up. I wish I could have been a fan of this during its prime" The sequel coming out on the next gen console was what made me buy the console, and I can say after playing the second game that it may not be my favourite series ever, but the one I played is my favourite standalone video game and a top 10 fandom. On another note. What you said about ResE is where I am with a novel series. I am 7 books into an 18 novel series (well the 18th one is scheduled for a late 2020 release) and while I have a LONG way to go before i read the whole series, i can definitely say i am a huge fan of it, and it's easily my favourite novel series ever.

My criteria for what constitutes a "true fan" of something are: 1. Do you have a clearly defined idea of why you like it? 2. Do you dislike anything about it specifically because it contradicts what you like about it? 3. Are both of the above things that apply to the thing as a whole? For instance, it's *very* possible to be a fan of Persona 5's soundtrack and not of the game. You can be a fan of the game on a purely mechanical level and not a fan of any other part. You can be a fan of the story and hate the actual "game" part of the game. So #3 makes sure of the difference between, for example, being a fan of Skyrim and being a fan of The Elder Scrolls. Fandom of one element is just as valid as fandom of the whole, it's just not fandom of the whole.

as long as you've played a persona game for a reasonable time and show interest and passion in in the game and have the desire to play/experience other entry/s in the series you can be a fan but if someones never played a game and they just makes memes about it on instagram then i wouldn't consider them fans. There (to me) isn't such a thing as a true fan but I do feel there is a spectrum-like graph based on how much someone is invested in a series or product. TLDR: as long as you've consumed the media and feel enjoyment and passion from something , then you are probably a fan.

I usually define a fan as someone who supports the Series by playing it, watching it, owning merch and/or criticizing the producers, or just have interest in the series to the point of enjoying discussions of it.

A true fan is someone who unashamedly enjoys something regardless of popularity. Basically anyone who isn't a fairweather fan, clout seeker, or poser would count as a true fan.

Being a "true fan" of something depends on the person. YOU decide, not... whatever the fans say. I don't hate any of the new Star Wars movies, I liked Doctor Who series 12, and if given the chance, I would buy Pokemon SWSH again. Because I'm a fan of all of those things.

I think being a fan is just the enjoyment of a game, story, or series. For example, I love The World Ends With You. However, I have never played the first game. I watched literary analysis and gameplay on RU-vid, but I have not played the game. The sequel, TWEWY Neo, is something I HAVE been playing. It’s great, go play it. I think you gotta engage with the work of art you are a fan of in some way to be a “true” fan. Weather that means you played one of the games, or you made a video on it. As long as you like it, and you engage with it in some way, you are a fan. ^^

I find being a true fan of the SMT franchise in particular to be someone who just enjoys the game, knows what makes the game good, knows the game's shortcomings, and are able to fully appreciate the game's beauty in their own way. I might be more inclined to like Persona 3 Portable FemMC's route than Persona 3's MaleProtag route, or I might prefer Persona 4 instead of Persona 4 Golden, but it doesn't matter at the end of the day because I can say that I'm a fan of that game and can still call myself a true fan, atleast a true fan of that one game in particular.

my thoughts on what being a fan means is say, if you've only played Persona 5 and haven't played any of the other persona games and don't exactly plan to play them anytime soon, that in my eyes makes you a Persona 5 fan. if you've played Persona 5 AND Persona 4 or 3 or 1 or 2, that makes you a fan of the Persona series. being a TRUE fan to me is if you've played at least what games you can get your hands on and you deeply enjoy and love playing the games, and if you deeply love and enjoy Persona 5, that would make you a true Persona 5 fan in my eyes, not necessarily a true fan of the whole series, but a true fan nonetheless

My definition of a fan: Someone who enjoys something from mild to extreme. An example of a mild fan is someone who plays a few persona games and watches let's plays on RU-vid. An example of an extreme fan is someone who plays all persona games (1 and 2 included), watches the anime (even persona 5 anime), watches let's plays on RU-vid. There are two people in the extreme fan spectrum. The normies and the assholes. The normies are willing to be open about people not knowing much about the subject and willing to teach others about it. The assholes are people who aren't open about people not knowing much about the subject and insult the person in question about not knowing much. That should clear it up!

on this topic it does interest me, It does seem like that when a latest game of a franchise gets hype you will have people who are either curious of the other games who came before or they don't and just move on I think a good example is the nier and drakengard franchise unlike persona and fire emblem where numbers are thrown around (three houses can be spewed around as FE16). you could say there is a 'hint' on that there is more of this, nier on the other hand has about 5ish games (complicated becuase of how many versions of the original nier) and automata is that big game and it only eludes to the original nier and the entire Drakengard trilogy is swept aside because there names have nothing to do with each other despite all of them connected though I for one have played automata and then went Drakengard 3 mostly thanks to clemps,Vakyrie etc for pushing it out (sorry for the long text)
