What Does the Course Say About Boundaries? (Exploring A Course in Miracles Podcast)

We all know healthy boundaries are important. Long before boundaries were celebrated as an essential part of self-care, Robert Frost wrote, “Good fences make good neighbors.” And yet, as Course students, the topic of boundaries brings up many significant questions:
How do we reconcile boundaries with the spiritual teaching that we ultimately have no boundaries, that the lines between us are a fiction of the mind?
When does an emphasis on setting boundaries get in the way of the supreme value of love and forgiveness?
How would the Course advise us to enact a boundary or even to end a relationship?
In this podcast, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington share what the Course has to teach us on this very important topic.

Thank you SO much for this talk. I have been looking for this topic in ACIM but have not found it. I was in a “holy relationship” with a man who according to the conventional wisdom of the world is a narcissist. It seemed to work ok at first, but then the patterns emerged: Idolization, love bombing/flattery, controlling behavior, stonewalling/silent treatment, setting rules for the relationship only on his terms, and finally discarding me. When I saw these patterns, I blocked him and he started hoovering and flattering me once again. I am really confused about this because the world says “go no contact and go within to heal” but ACIM seems to say that the Holy Spirit will take care of everything if I just see my brother as innocent, but this wasn’t the case in my relationship. I had to let the relationship go. By staying in the relationship, I would have been playing a martyr and a victim and not knowing my worthiness. I am confused about this and need to see more wisdom and guidance from Jesus and the Holy Spirit in ACIM teachings on what to do with these “narcissistic abuse” relationships. I see there are other ways to connect with my brother that are according to the Holy Spirit’s open channel, without continuing the abusive route.

Brilliant analysis dears! I observe boundaries while valuable in my mind's duality experience, can be overly separating to the ego's neediness of special relationships! I use the phrase 'rules of engagement' in relating with my characters in my dream allowing for unifying perception.

A great deal of insight for someone like myself working to correctly apply ACIM to having to be on a dialysis machine for 16 years so far within the dream of sickness. For as I clear away all the veiled reasons the ego would have me need to be on dialysis within the dream, I can thus simply continue to go, until such a time I no longer need to, for the simple reason of my accepting the atonement for myself. This for whatever initial mistake I did make for me having to go onto dialysis in the first place. For as it says in ACIM, the Holy Spirit doesn’t care ‘what form’ Atonement takes. Just so long as it does take. Or words to the same affect. So I see dialysis as just another form of my accepting of Atonement within the dream for oneself. In a specific form I personally can accept and relate to. This while also working to uproot the shadows within the mind currently keeping me ‘appearing’ sick within the dream of sickness. But since dialysis is so very like the Christian thought of ‘sacrifice’ Jesus is said to have made, this in terms of his ‘pouring out his life blood’ for purposes of ‘cleaning’ I mean, and perhaps more so than any other medical device out there, I can see the possible trap of the wanting to be a ‘martyr’ like how Christians mistakenly think of Jesus and many of his followers. This obviously with a mistaken focus on the crucifixion, rather than the resurrection. This wanting to be a ‘martyr’ syndrome easily creeping into a patient’s relationship with having to go to dialysis. So personally I worked to avoid this one by changing not so much the picture of dialysis with its many many flaws, but rather to change the PURPOSE that I still go for the time being. Changing the REASON that I still appear to have to go. And so I as simple reminder to the mind of that reason and change of purpose I decided to call my going ‘Enter Atoning Dialysis’. Meaning that now three times per ‘strong’, because strong, sounds better that three times per ‘week/weak’, I remind the mind that I go ‘STILL’, like in the eye of a trauma storm. This as a formal expression of ‘accepting the atonement for myself’. With absolutely no sacrifice, or ‘side effect’ due to what otherwise IS a ‘trauma’ based medical practice, any longer required. And it does feel to be working ‘well’. Many thanks for the in-depth discussions you have on such very practical application of ACIM. Your brother, Paul 🥰🙏

Thank you!! So many amazing nuggets in here that make so much sense. I really like the emphasis of one knowing their own worth and engaging with the world from that place. The martyr concept was also incredibly compelling. Amazing food for thought. I’m grateful for your talk and all the hard work put in to create it. Have you continued creating more content on this topic? Thanks again!☺️🙏🏻🩷

This is a great topic for an ACIM podcast. What about parent-child relationships, where the parent has greater responsibility? I'd like to know what ACIM says about the position of children, which seems to be more vulnerable. What is the abused child's responsibility? How do we make sense of our childhoods?

BUT I think ACIM is very problematic on this question. You outlined why, but I think the subject is worthy of more in-depth development. Parents are responsible for children, not the other way around, and the fact that it's possible to overcome the effects of abuse doesn't make abuse non-abuse. In ACIM Jesus seems to say the responsibility is always yours. I can understand how that message is empowering--yet others also have responsibility and we deserve empathy ourselves.
