I'm a Singaporean. I agree most drivers are as Justin mentioned. Once you give a signal, they won't let you in. Personally, when cars signal to enter my lane, I let them come in. Because of the driving culture here, most drivers just signal and won't come in, expecting me to speed up. But L always wave them to enter. And you can see the shock on their faces. They probably think I'm a foreigner. 😂

Tuppence Worth Agree. If we all start with ourselves, it makes driving on our roads much better. If I see someone signaling, I would slow and give them space to come in.

I'll signalled and proceed to filter, if they speed up, I'll speed up my filtering. They can jam the brakes all they want. They'll be stupid to submit their video recordings of them speeding up to prevent others from filtering to their insurance.

That isn’t a good trait or character, if they do it for no reason at all (not in a hurry, not carrying pregnant wife, not about to poop). I’m like you, I give way to people when I’m not in a hurry. But I’m also persistent in taking their lane when I need to.

about changing lanes... other drivers will pay more attention to your car movements (body? language) than the indicator lights. So you do need to couple your signal lights with slowly inching your way into that lane. if you do it right, you'll get _at most_ one (asshole) driver speeding up to prevent you entry, but the next guy likely wouldn't/wouldn't be able to do the same. definitely give it a try, and please don't lose your humanity/civility just because other people driver like jerks! you'll waste more petrol tailgating and braking lots, plus your passengers will thank you for a less bumpy ride. the thing about having lots of greenery on the roads is a deliberate design plan near the start of independence. because if we don't have lots of trees, it will be sweltering hot.

The parking situation has improved quite a bit in the UK. Instead of paying by phones most places you can pay by phone or on an app now. The paid shopping centres now also have automatic payments that read your number plate and charge your card.

Well in Singapore, our cars is very expensive and only have a 10 year lease is because the government needs to control the number of cars on the road. If they don’t do that, Singapore will be like its neighbouring countries cities for example Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur whereby traffic jams is like a norm which last for hrssssss and getting a cup of coffee and some groceries which is like only 3 blocks away will take you eternity to reach. Like what Justin says Singapore is a city state and like any other cities....you don’t need a car to travel as public transport is super accessible and very cheap too compared to other countries.Having a car in Singapore is not a necessity but more of a commodity.

For an experienced driver, talking and driving is like talking and walking. As long as the content of the conversation doesn't require precision, both actions are based on instinct. Sometimes, i explain financial decisions to take to my mom while driving. However, i never use my phone for anything other than navigation and music while driving. I recognize that no level of driving skill can make up for not looking at the road.

I still find it fascinating and weird to have that little right-turn pocket at the cross junction even though I have been driving in sg for so long. I do agree on the ethic of most drivers in sg, I would turn on my signal just to get them to speed up before I switch lane, that’s what it’s for haha

What driving in Singapore is like? It's not necessary. It's really just for the smallest of convenience. You have kids? Take a cab. You're going somewhere secluded? Take the train to the nearest train station then take a cab. You need to get out of the secluded area? Book a cab beforehand. The convenience owning a car offers is extremely minimal. I've actually done the math and it actually makes more financial sense to take a cab/grab/renting occasionally than owning a car in Singapore 😂

Overall , driving in Singapore is better compare to europe and other parts of asia. if u indicated the signal earlier , most cars would slow down expecting u to come into their lanes. Maybe u don't really drive often in singapore. My experience is that As long as u signal, most cars would give way to u . At least for me 8 cars out 10 would give way. Unless they know u are trying to jump queue, for sure no ' giving way'.

ERP = congestion charge. I guess the one brilliant thing about ERP is that since all cars have to have the in-vehicle unit, virtually all car parks use the same system and it makes it SO easy to park.

There is a reason for "owning" a car for just 10 years. But you get to choose a one time renewal for a 5 or 10 year COE, but it will be very expensive to do that.
@hanriktan
@hanriktan 4 года назад
Now for the reason/s: 1. Generally, when a car get older, more maintnenance require, and obviously consumption of petrol will not be cost effective due to old engine. And chances of an aged car breaking down more often when it is not maintain properly. And it will cause traffic jam when the engine decided to take a day off for that day.
@hanriktan
@hanriktan 4 года назад
2. Having too many aged or old cars will not look nice on Singapore road. So, with the 10 year life span, you will get to see many new cars on the road, kind of making Singapore looks modern and nice too.

💯% AGREE to what both of you said...NO NEED to have a CAR as we are living in a Tiny country where travelling from East to West takes roughly 1 to 1 1/2hrs only!...even stuck in jam the travelling time doesn't exceed till 2hrs..Unlike big countries... travelling from 1 state to another state sometimes take 1 day or more to reach. I'll rent a car only when my "craving" to go for a spin comes ...other than that I'll take public transport. Furthermore, I'll rather keep my pocket FAT than FLAT because having to PAY the BANK for Car LOAN EVERY MONTH😁 is totally not worth it...but if I'm a boss having multiple businesses here or have disabled parents then I buy a car.

the drivers involved can choose to settle it privately or by insurance, if privately the damaged vehicle gets sent for repairs and the person responsible for the accident pays for it. For insurance it's a lot more tedious, drivers take photos of the scene, position of the vehicles and damages then make a report. Insurance company will then take over and send an assessor to determine the damages and cover for the cost of repairs (whole process for insurance takes pretty long)

If u often travel the same road non issue, but if it’s a new road or some viaduct then the multitude of road signs cluster so close to the exit is rather confusing. So I do agree with Justin, it’s just as good as being after the exit.

I disagree with the switching of lane part where drivers do not give way. We must know the context of when that usually happen. Remember, signalling that you want to switch lane doesn't give you the right, it is still their right of way. So, you should either have filtered into that lane long before, or slow down and filter in when the slot is available. Generally, cars do not give way when they think you are jumping queue. Usually, the turning lane has a long string of slow moving cars whilst the next lane is alot alot faster. If you use the next lane and then try to cut in at the turn, most cars will not give way.

Switching lanes on a straight road isn’t ‘jumping queue’ 😂

@@GeorgiaCaney Usually, you don't have a problem with switching Lane. It is when you are jumping queue even though you might not have the intention to since you are not familiar with the road.

Just want to say that if your car costs you an arm and a leg, and your house costs the rest of your body, then just owning a house and a car in singapore will put you in the top 10% of the world financially. Easily. Also, considering the right to own 1 car per 10 years costs roughly 50 grand, you would think to splurge on that car, which is why there are so many "expensive" cars on the road. Honestly, the cheaper cars are the worse bang for your buck since the piece of paper youre buying is probably more expensive than the car itself.

Let me explain our singaporean mentality about signalling and moving to the next lane. 1) Firstly, ALL singaporean planned their time "JUST IN TIME", so they are always rushing around to places in a hurry, every cars that cut in slows them down by a few seconds. (LOL but it's true) 2) Next, the driver sees that you want to CUT in, well, you know singaporean love to queue, so it feels like you are cutting queue. Another stupid reasoning IMHO, but it's a singaporean thing, especially those big cars with RICH people thinking their time is worth more than others. 3) Another reasoning in their head is, well, the cars behind can always give in to you, I will drive faster past you and you can filter into my back. 4) You are driving a smaller car, you will slow me down if you go in front of me, better you stay behind me while I rush off. I think the main culprit has got to do with the lack of buffer TIME singaporean gives for them to reach the destination. And the worst of them are TAXI drivers who are so used to driving everyday, they just naturally becomes road bully (especially those below 40 years old driver) My only suggestion, go to the lane way in advance, don't signal TOO early, drive as per usual, and when you see an opening, signal and cut in within a 2-3 seconds. Because if you signal and don't filter in for too long (about 4 to 6 seconds) the driver behind you will assume you are waiting for him to drive past you before you filter in, so naturally he will speed up. Otherwise enjoy your driving during off peak hour, the road is way better maintained than our neighbouring countries.
