Honestly this might be my favorite version of the story. I think leaving Ramona to face her Exes since…I mean they’re HER exes, was an amazing choice and seeing them get extra moments to flourish as characters was fun as hell. Also I think Bryan Lee O’Malley actually confirmed the future timeline wasn’t actually a sequel to the comic or movie and is technically it’s own continuity that just happens to follow similar beats

@immanuel7925
@immanuel7925 10 месяцев назад
Hey, good video. I have very mixed feelings about this show. On one hand, correcting the lack of development of Ramona in both pieces of material, and making the evil exes better characters for sure was something I wanted from any adaptation of the material. You know, like how Invincible fixed a lot of the issues with the original comic. However, I feel as though even in that territory there's just stuff that's missing or just not that explored. The fact that they had Ramona make peace with the exes was cool, but in majority of the cases I never really felt the actual damage she did to them. Probably because in most cases it was limited to a small flashback scene with little context. Or the fact that Ramona as a character just realizes she needs to be a better person and ends up not changing all too much until the end tells us she learnt to love herself. The reason this felt lacking because the original's criticism of Scott is so much more scathing. He's a pathetic loser whose charm begins to wear thin on everyone around him. It is, sadly one of the reasons it seems like his friends don't like him all too much. They're kind of stuck with Scott, and even though they love him, he's flawed on every level. (Notice that everyone kind of distances themselves from scott towards the end-- they move on, live lives, and scott has to move on too). Scott's damage to people in relationships is also active in the story through Knives, Kim and (arguably) Lisa. His devilmay care nature is thoroughly examined as a flaw -- it hinders his ability to work, to be a productive band member, to be a good boyfriend, and person. And it takes time for the flaw to fully reveal itself. The only issue I see with Ramona is that she's a cold character -- but her cold attitude is completely gone after episode 3. She's actually apologetic, and caring towards the exes. She is completely willing to trust they aren't evil. And even "seemingly" forgives Gideon-- her abusive and manipulative ex (The show doesn't even give us any time to actually think about how thoroughly messed up Gideon's exploitation of her is. If anything, the relationship between those two needs more time on screen).

I think the most off-putting thing, and this is a grievance that most people have, is the lack of Scott within his own story. In fact, there is a noticeable tone of cynicism or even malice towards Scott within this series from the other characters who are supposed to be his friends and family. Granted, in the comics, everyone in his life bemoaned him for his immaturity, obliviousness, and free-loading nature, but there was always a sense that they cared about him, enjoyed his company, and were willing to help him out as he struggled to make the leap from adolescence to adulthood. In the series, not only was everyone elated that he was presumed dead, but all of their lives were better off without him. The only characters who were upset over his death were Knives and Ramona - the characters who knew him the least. That didn't sit right with me the whole time watching.

This is an evident part of the original comic and even the movie though? Like he's kind of an unselfaware douche in the comic- him realizing that is like- his whole arc. As much as I wanted the comic to be adapted into animation, I can still read the comic, and if they did adapt it I would’ve messed out on so much creativity. On a new story they filled in puzzle pieces I didn’t know were missing. I view it we a very strange B side/ sister piece to the comic and I don’t think I can read Scott pilgrim the same way again

My problem with this addition to the series is that it didn’t necessarily add character development to the series, it just replaces the development other characters would have normally gotten. Steven is still exactly the same and doesnt get his boyfriend, Envy Adams doesn’t go through her arc, Kims reconciliation with Scott doesnt happen, Gideon is effectively completely rewritten as a character, and Lisa STILL ISNT THERE for some reason. Ramona doesn’t even actually apologize for her behavior to anyone except Roxie, every other Evil Ex barely interacts with her in any meaningful way outside of Lucas Lee. The whole thing felt like side content they could have stacked ONTO the original to elevate it, but on its own/as an AU, it just falls flat. Like instead of eating Mac and Cheese, you just ate the shredded cheese by itself. EDIT: It also doesn’t make sense from a viewer/fan perspective to have a Scott that doesn’t learn from his mistakes be the antagonist. Every other version of Scott genuinely deals with his issues by gaining the power of self respect/understanding and the confrontation with Nega-Scott. The idea that either A. This isn’t either of those Scotts makes me question why Im supposed to care for him or B. It IS one of those Scotts and his other arcs amounted to nothing. Scott doesn’t even solve that issue in this one. He just fights him, he gets sent back to the future, and we’re supposed to believe that he learned despite having an even worse arc in this one than the other adaptations. I just don’t get the point.
@justinfriedman2039
@justinfriedman2039 10 месяцев назад
It's simply character assassination of the Scott we know from the original books and movie. That Scott's and Ramona's growth is undermined by the new story, and the use of time travel destroys the idea that toxic/unhealthy people can learn to be better without a sci-fi intervention.

But that’s the thing. Scott DID learn from his mistakes, future Scott is a version of him that fell back on his old habits. Flaws that big don’t get fixed after one learning moment. But then she wanted to take a break and he didn’t get the memo.
@ike804
@ike804 10 месяцев назад
@@joshuaannis7718 The problem being that doesn’t get resolved either. The anime was basically if UBW was about romance instead of his ideals. Tiny changes to the present timeline and the big fight is about changing the future to not lead to the bad end he saw himself. I watched the show without knowing much about Scott Pilgrim other than the fighting of the exes from the movies. I wasn't expecting them to actually remove the main character for half of the show. At the end, I loved it. Loved it so much I binged the comics the day after I finished watching the show. And then rewatched it again with the Jp dub. I may be late to the party, but it is an amazing story and an amazing cast. I might be biased, but I found the Anime as a sequel to be just the perfect follow-up to the series.

Another thing is that it heavily implies that the screen play that Ramona sends back in time IS the movie screenplay literally having her say she condensed the plot and combined characters.

I hope not. It sort of robs the book of it's ending... which is currently the best version of the story we have so far with both Scott AND Ramona dealing with their issues in order to fight side by side with one another. Thus far the film sidelined Ramona too much to focus on Scott (and angling for a Knives ending that the comics already warned us would be 'bad for everyone') while this anime (Currently) sidelines Scott too much for Ramona's development, and only the book does BOTH at the same time with a particularly good sense of maturity... I honestly can't see how THIS timeline could POSSIBLY result in any better result since if older Scott comes from the timeline where he actually went through a character arc and learned lessons... what hope does he have in this timeline where he hasn't done ANY growing at all? Obviously a second season could really hone in on this and with the right direction could really hone in on showcasing Scott and Ramona TOGETHER, conquering their issues to be worthy of each other, but at this exact moment, while Ramona has dealt with her primary fault, Scott's still a newborn babe of issues.

I really loved the story, his IF-type storytelling, and the spin Brian gave on the story, born from the maturity he gained from the time passed by the end of the series. One of the elements i liked the most was the nuanced way they rappresented the conflict between older Scott and Ramona in the future. Yeah, Scott probably did make a mess of things in their marriage, and a lot of his suffering and grief was self-imposed, but part of that was caused by Ramona distancing herself fom Him and her problems, and falling back in her habits. She didn't say to him that she still loved him and that separation wasn't meant to be a divorce, making Scott think that all his efforts on being a better person and having a good relationship for himself and her lover were wasted, and making him having a worst break up fallout that the one he had with Envy. She expected him to make all the work to resolve their relationship problems, when the faults were shared between them. Damn, she didn't visit Scott for the 10 years he spent in his old appartment, making him go even more batshit crazy in the meantime. Infact, Older Scott's rage deflates almost instantly when Ramona tells him that they could have made their relationship work again in the past, and when Ramona rejects his proposal to get back together, he accepts it, bitterly, but he accepts it. Their problems were caused by terrible misundestandings from both parts. And their resolution relied in both of them trying to face their problems together, not apart form each other.

the bait and switch ain't the problem, it's the poor execution. You have to be out of your mind to think any of the exes are "well developed" outside of maybe Roxy and Lucas, Ramona doesn't even get that talk with Gidian despite going out of her way to head over and Petel just fades into the background after claiming himself to be the main character, it's pathetic.

I found a lot of the stuff stagnant, and i think it took away from some of the momentum that I appreciated in the old one. Also found Older Scott to be corny, and felt empty and bored watching the show without Scott in it. Scott was the glue that got all the characters we see to meet and hang together basically so it just felt empty and weird to me. The animation was nice, the humor was cute, and the cast was great but it just wasn’t what I asked for. I just wish we got an actual adaptation. I don’t like that people are saying that people shouldn’t complain because of the comic and movie existing. I wanted to see events throughout the comic be animated and have things be more complex and thorough and not have to cut out so much stuff like the movie did. Then we got a bait and switch after getting bombarded with advertisements about the show being about Scott when it’s instead about Ramona. Then you have future Scott regress and seemingly forget all he’s learned to being a better person in the comics over a misunderstanding of all things. I’ll just ignore whatever the connections the movie has to this and pretend that it’s separate. It’s the best I’m gonna get now. This series, while good overall, was just a big “what could’ve been” for me. I’m tired of this incessant need to massively change things for the sake of it. Scott didn’t need to “take off” in order for the supporting cast to have more development. The comic being the way it was with how it treated characters was just due to bad writing. Maybe if this were 13 episodes and Netflix would stop making its shows shorter and shorter the creator could afford Scott being there I guess idk. I think that could be a factor. Season 2 maybe?

He thought the space she needed was a divorce. So his dumbass BECAME a evil ex. It's hilarious and poetic. It's a sweet ass semi-sequel. The evil exes were 1 dimensional jerks, and Ramona was always sort of a bitch to them growing up. I really, really wanted to like this show, but the further into it I got the more disappointed I became. I think I was really looking forward to seeing more of Scott and Ramona actually being in a relationship and how it helps them grow past their flaws to become better individuals, even with all the messiness. I was also never sold on Scott in the live-action version and immediately fell in love with the animation's Scott, making it such a let down when he is whisked away in episode one. To me, this also hurt Ramona's character - why is she so hooked on this guy she went on one date with when she is someone who routinely leaves people when it starts to get real? He behavior is of a Romana who has already gone through her character development, which doesn't make sense in this version of the story. I think this video's point about how this is a response to the movie Scott who has not gone through the growth of comic Scott has softened some of my initial bitterness though, as the idea of Scott just growing up to be a obsessive man-child felt so mean-spirited to me. It's a helpful point of view and maybe I'll be able to watch it again in the future with that perspective in mind and maybe like it. But right now, I can at least say for certain that the production itself is incredible: I loved the animation, the music, the action choreography, voice performances and sound effects -- all of it was awesome. I even like how the mouth-flaps didn't always match with what they were saying, reminding me of old anime dubs. It was a good touch. But the story... not for me.

I haven’t read the comics or watched the movie, and Scott Pilgrim is one of my new favorite pieces of media I’ve ever seen. I was sold on Scott and Ramona’s chemistry immediately, the comedy was great, and eight episodes of emotional healing, character development, and silly action is the kind of stuff I would inject directly into my veins any day of the week. No show is flawless, but imo all of this show’s flaws are completely understandable and easily overlooked.

This show was like the Rebuild of Evangelion or Final Fantasy VII Remake but for Scott Pilgrim lol I watched this with a good friend of mine who's a huge fan of the comics, I've only seen the movie and know a few things about the comic thanks to her. While I was mostly on board with it, in great part thanks to the amazing artstyle and animation, as well as just how fun the show was in general, she felt a bit conflicted, loving a LOT of stuff but not being 100% on board with everything. It was a cool watch though, hope we get more just so that we can see more of this artstyle and animation.

Speaking as someone who read around 15-16 chapter of the comic and seen the movie 2 or 3 times this show I feel has a good first half and meh second half. The first half gives us an interesting new dyamic to look at for these characters (Lucas and Roxy especially) and Ramona trying to reconcile with her exes is great, but the second half feels like more stuff happen that Ramona is in the background of. Episode 5 drops the reconcile aspect and makes some decent joke, but I feel become a bad way to characterize Todd leaving him a mess. Episode 6 is really just the fun opening and then a drag out with Gideon behavior change (which is fine), context on the twins backstory and then the mystery is solved poof, it honestly not that good imo. Episode 7 is just speedrunning Scott to be developed which doesn't feel earned and has a hook mystery which you can eaisly figure out. Episode 8 is fine with an epic battle, but I feel the way Future Scott is handled doesn't solve the problem which the previous episode brought up. The whole aspect of Ramona not trying to run away from her past feels so contradictory when she solves the Future Scott problem by poofing him away and instead combing with pass Ramona to help a Scott who hasn't gone dark side. Again I think there could have been a decent what if, but I can't call it great due to the condense series second half.

Still a bait and switch. Glad their is a part of the audience that enjoys, yet their is no denying that there is also a segment that feels cheated or lied to about this being a proper adaption of the source material. This being some extention of the live action was such a weird choice, when the easiest path was to do follow the source and add some character development around the exes and Ramona. This would have lead to new audience going back to the source material, the established audience being happy and sharing with their buds and other, merchandise sales rise, all is good in the neighborhood, like they wizards in Japan do with their comic tales moving to other mediums. But this is what we got, so be it.

I actually interpreted the show to be a spiritual sequel the comics and not the film, for several reasons. Although there are a lot of similarities and call backs to the film, I think first and for most the Older Scott we meet in episode 7 acts a lot more like comic Scott than movie Scott. He still has that foolish confidence that the movie Scott didn’t really have in my opinion. And in the virtual reality scene, Regular Scott says “Is that our ex? Do we have to confront our past or something? That sounds terrible.” And Older Scott replies “I’m telling you the whole thing was terrible” which I don’t think applies much the movies events, which for the most part was just one eventful week for Scott. I think he’s experiences of reconciling with Envy, The Nega Scott, Lisa, and all the events in the comics would be garner that kind of reaction. And later in the episode, younger Scott asks Older Scott to tell him what they did wrong so he can do better, and Older Scott remarks “You immediately assume I messed up?!” I interpreted that as Scott being frustrated with still being perceived as in the wrong even after all the changes he’s made. I think it’s a very human reaction to feel as though all your efforts of self improvement were for nothing. And I’m sure from Scott was frustrated as Ramona at the pointed didn’t actual change like the anime Ramona did, so interpreted it as her doing what she always does. Granted Scott did massively over react, but that’s normal for Scott and people in general. I viewed Scott’s arc in the anime to be a succession to his arc in the comics of being a cautionary tale that even if you overcome your demons, you can still fall back into toxic behaviors

I think I was most disappointed since it was not an adaptation, but felt more like an alternative new game plus timeline in Nier. Then it just went to explore and change character areas on characters that got less screen time in the movie. I really disliked the episode of them making the movie as it felt like a parody than retelling or developing the story and universe of Scott more. While it was certainly nice to see Ramona take a more active role in the story, I did not feel like she had enough charisma to carry the show with her cold delivery. While I am happy an animated Scott Pilgrim exists, I am already looking to get the graphic novels to understand the real story.

I loved the show. Big FLCL comparisons, with the wacky characters and insane fight sequences, along with it being a highly stylized study of a single character (Ramona) makes this so so good. As FLCL is my favorite show, the fact I wasn't around for its initial airing always makes me sad. But now it's like I get to experience the joy other people got back then with this show. It's also great to see such a public Japanese and American crossover. I think this one will age really well. It has all the hallmarks of a cult classic. I'm glad they did something new instead of a full on adaption. Wallace is my favorite variation of his character so far. Lots of feelings about this, but the short of it is that I love this, and I'm glad it exists.

At this point I've come to appreciate how every single iteration of the story: The song, the comic, the film, the video game and now the TV series kind of goes a completely different way with the whole thing and interprets the characters differently to the point where I no longer think there is a definitive version of any character. I remember one of the things that bugged me about the film is that they didn't do Julie Powers justice but here she gets tons of screen time and she's kind of completely different from the comics. I got the impression towards the end that Julie was actually a pretty nice person but she's the only person who doesn't let Scott's bs slide but here she just seems to be kind of evil so I don't know, maybe I was wrong.

@Oxb5400 yeah, but it's like people can't get away from that. Obviously I'm providing an oversimplification on the matter based on the similar opinions I've seen on Twitter. I see it as a brand new adventure with this cast of characters, but people just wanted the adaptation. Again, I understand that people feel duped. Maybe a little thing here or there to say "a twist will happen" would have softened the blow, or at least have it happen sooner in the first episode? I dunno, I had no issue with it. Would it have been awesome to have a straight adaptation? Yes! Will it happen? Probably not, and even if they went through the whole story that Even Older Scott went through, it wouldn't be exact, since it's clear Nega-Scott wasn't dealt with properly, if anything Scott fully becoming the full force of his mistakes. I'm just saying people were surprised and it left them disappointed despite us getting a quality anime with a nice new take on the story.

I am the one who see animated one first. I knew the name Scott Pilgrim, but I was not that intersted back then. This time, I watched it because Science Saru made it. Science Saru always makes good animation, so I just give it try, with Japanese dub(I`m better at Japanese rather than English, you will see). But I`m kinda "Mystery-Solving-But-by-cliches" person, so I understand what is happening at movie episode(Isn`t that 3?). I suspected that "Oh, So the original story is actually that, right? This is kinda spin-off". So after watching it, I go watch to original movie on netflix. And honestly, Both of them are good, but not for me. The only thing bugged me was that I can`t expect how crazy or how ground this world is. If I saw the movie first, then I would easily accepted this version. But I saw the animated version first, So I just can`t handle what level of this reality stands on first few episodes. It just goes dial up to 11 and goes dial down to the earth so easily. That would be a charm for this story, but I have to adjust my reality level for watching this.

I never watched the comic, but i watched the movie right before the show came out to have an idea of what it was about. I loved the show but I feel stuff got kinda out of hand near the end with stuff happening with no real explanation lol. aka "super romona" i still feel it was out of no where and not explained. With other stuff in the show (like weird powers and stuff) I eventually understood it was a normal thing in the universe of scott pilgrim for people to have powers that only applied to them. I liked the idea honestly, but the whole "super romona" thing just felt out of place. I'm guessing it was a way of showing how scott and romona fixed their problems and could now move forward with their lives, but I feel like they could have does something else to make it apply better to the story.

I really like the idea of Ramona cleaning her own mess. I don´t like the execution. One example of what i really like about this show is the fight between Ramona and Roxy, because Ramona is forced to face her mistakes and this gave Roxy closure, this is Drama in a Comedy, the real problem with most of this Anime is that Drama is missing. The original comic have a lot of humor and parody, but have a lot of drama and real issues too. In the comic, Ramona has a huge trauma regarding Gideon, this is totally gone in the anime and is a huge part of Ramona character, she named his cat after him. Ramona, Scott, Kim and sometimes Knives give not only humor but also drama to the original story, in this adaptation the chartacters are caricatures of themselves, this is why Kim is almost missing in this show, beacuse she is a character that adds drama to the original story, she is a character that got really hurt by Scott, years past and she seems to still be bitter and hurt about Scott, she sometimes seems to still fall for Scott which is sad, and despite this, she is the one that help Scott clean his mess and come back to Ramona, which is even more tragic. This new series have none of this and there was potential to put some drama, Scott die and nobody seems to care. Scott death could have been a great oportunity for Ramona to feel guilt and trigger a real desire to fix her mess. But this show is too much a joke to have substance, and is really sad, because this show was a really good idea.

This show is in my eyes the DLC to the comics and movie. It pretty much doesn't work as well without context and goes from a 9/10 to a 7-8/10 So it definitely is a show meant for fans in my opinion. Because Scott's character and other developments in prior iterations lay the ground work. Like, for example. You won't be pressed for Scott's development or character arc. Cuz you'll have been made familiar with how it goes already. Meanwhile first timers will be initially intrigued that the MC is removed after episode one and the shift in POV, but would be less enthusiastic about the fact that despite him getting minimal development for the whole show that his arc serves as the major climax and fight for the end of the show and retakes centre stage. When for like 3/4th of the series it's been more about Ramona and the exes. Their relationship would also feel less compelling, since the two knew eachother for a couple days at best. So most non-fans could feel peeved as to how integral their dynamic and how they're the love of eachothers' when all they've seen is one actually good date and a kiss prior.
@lunarin649
@lunarin649 9 месяцев назад
My first main issue is that they butchered Wallace's characterization. Like, on the comics he was so caring towards Scott. Even when he judged Scott for his life decisions, you could still tell that he genuinely enjoyed his company. But in the new show he treats him like a complete nuisance, even acting like he doesn't know him at his FUNERAL. Its even more annoying since, anyone whos' read the comics knows that the real Wallace would have beat the shit out of Envy if she had tried to preform at his funeral the way she did. (They could have at least made it so he had an affair with Todd to get Envy back in honor of Scott. That way, the fight between their stunt doubles would have made more sense.) Also its supposed to be official that the reason why Wallace in the comics looks the most distressed when Scott dies in vol6, is because he's his most loyal friend. So this change completely contradicts his character. I'm guessing they did this to try and force the idea that Ramona and Scott had a stronger connection then they actually had at that point. By making it seem like she's "the only one who really cares about him"(aside from a 17yr he dated), despite them having only gone on one date... (Kinda gay that they had to tone down Scott's bond with another man in order to make his romance with Ramona feel more genuine lol. But I mean, Bryan Lee O'Malley did in a recent interview act like it's common knowledge that Wallace had feelings for Scott so...) And aside from Wallace's relationship with Scott, he doesn't even have the same personality. Like why is he an introverted narcissist suddenly? At least Mobile actually made it in the show which was a nice touch. Also, aside from Ramona's evil exes and maybe young Neil(kinda?), I feel that all the other characters(including Ramona) were much more flat. The only thing better about Ramona is that they changed her to be nicer and let her "defeat" her exes on her own. But still, I don't like how they made it seem like she wouldn't have the flaws she had in the comics. Like not being able to communicate with Scott / having no issue with cheating on Scott with Roxy / ghosting Scott and expecting him to not take that as her breaking up with him. And it makes even less sense since by getting rid of a lot of her issues, it makes it seem like Gideon on this version didn't have control over her. This, along with how flat Scott's character in this version, not having his hippie hair from vol1/2 which showed his lack of self care, his sensitivity to Envy, his inability to acknowledge his inner flaws & for some reason wearing the shirt he unlocked in the 6th vol after defeating Gideon, made it really hard for me to take the plot seriously. If they were going to go for this idea of showing how characters would grow and change in a different scenario, they should have made the characters act accurately to how they do in the first volume of the comics. Because, what's the point if we know that none of the characters from the comics actually would do the things they did in the show, if Scott had died. And while I do get that the author made this plot because of his own experience with divorce since Scott was based on him in the first place, I still feel annoyed with how the whole plot point with older Scott is basically a slap in the face to the development Scott had in the comics.(unless you see this show as being based on the movie version of Scott.) On the comics, for anyone who hasn't read them yet(you should), he was shown to be fully okay with giving Ramona space. He's supposed to be naturally an optimist, so there's no way he'd interpret older Ramona wanting space as her actually leaving him. Also, idk how some people actually think Knives had a better arc in the show than the comics. She literally had a whole arc in the comics where she got over Scott and learned to feel comfortable being on her own. It's cool she got to join the band, but that's like all she actually got in the show. And yeah, it's nice that she didn't have to deal with her whole denial phase in this version, but still, I'm not sure how people think that getting rid of conflict that's meant to make you uncomfortable = better development. Basically the show's only worth it if you want to see more content of the League of Evil Exes. Or if you only care about watching stuff with good animation. It just makes me sad because I would have liked the plot if they made more of an effort in keeping the characters accurate to the original.

While I understand the love of this take on Scott pilgrim, I am really underwhelmed with the the end product. The changes with Ramona are welcomed but I disagree with the idea that her comic counterpart had less of an arc or was “only a prize to be won”. She was a fully realized character in all fronts in my opinion and while this version does her justice, it’s in a very unearned/ less interesting way imo. The original comics span over a year or so where we get to see how the effects of the characters actions affect the their lives in the present. We see a very complex and nuanced relationship with every single character in a way that, for the most part, is grounded. Between all of the exes incel shenanigans is a down to earth story about a bunch of 20 somethings burdened by the horrors of the past and the uncertainty of the future. Much like the movie (which I still love) this version leaves out most of the decisions and arcs that made these characters interesting to me. Without the added context of Lisa, envy and Scott’s breakup and the truth behind him beating up Kim’s old boyfriend, you lose almost all of Scott’s most interesting developments. You also lose his dynamic with Kim which is my favorite in the comic. Ultimately making this Scott kind of boring to me. Knives is done some service in this version but all I can do is think about how she’s so much more interesting and complicated in the comics. They both reach a similar destination where they mature and get over scott except one happens over the course of a few days and feels unearned to me and one happens over the course of a very brutal year for her. There is no romance aspect that makes me care for Scott and Ramona in this version either. They meet for a day and he’s gone for the next 3/4th of the show so they don’t really grow together at all like in the comics. In the comics it was a relationship that had to be fought for and it really hit hard when they’d overcome really difficult relationship milestones like moving in together ect ect. I know they expect you to fill in some of the gaps with previous knowledge of other entries but I find that hard to do when my understanding of these characters completely involves what I know they’ve been through, and since they change everything starting from frame one, they don’t feel the same :(. It doesn’t mean much to me to just have Scott, Kim, and envy on screen, if they are completely recontextualized because without the things they went through, they aren’t the characters I fell in love with. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think it’s poorly written in the slightest. If anything I wish I wasn’t as much of a turbo fan of the comics bc then I’d love the hell out of it being so different and unfamiliar. Maybe in time with a rewatch or two it’d grow on me but as it stands it doesn’t mean anything to me. I’ll always have the comics and new ideas and takes are always welcomed but to me the original was perfect in almost every way and I don’t think what we lost in translation was worth this journey especially when most of the roads here lead to the same place with less impact. Scott pilgrim always showed how relationships are messy and hard and no one leaves unscathed but also no one is completely broken. Just different after. This version still commits to that…just not for the characters I think REALLY need it. (To be fair though they only had 8 episodes) Love the vids btw! (I hope I didn’t come off snobbish) (I’m resistant to change!!!)

I have mixed feelings on it. I had only seen the movie once on TV and knew something was different after episode one. I got to episode 3 and decided to read the entire comic. Then I finished the show, then the movie. I wish the slow burn of the comic was made into a show but I love how it sorta takes a stance on remakes. The original exists if you don’t like the show there’s 2 other versions of it already. I think Ramona was more flawed than the movie but was still a little too cool. I don’t like how the Future Ramonas get progressively cooler while the Scotts get visually uglier. I think the visual storytelling of Ramona’s and Scott’s character design undercuts the message that they’re both bad at being a couple. But I can’t stay too mad at it because Knives gets to be an adorable little rockstar and Wallace’s husband really does work at Nintendo.

My Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Critique i like the idea behind the show. scott should have never fought ramonas battles. she is the one who needs to contront her exes and therefore her past. i like that the show takes a completely different turn. but i don't like how it's executed. the movies combination of live action and the videogame/comic style slaps so hard. i can really feel the creativity and fun the people who made it must have had. the movies fightscenes make so much fun to watch unlike the ones of the series somehow. it's not like im not into animation. i love animation fightscenes, but these fightscenes just bore me. i miss the exciting and creative vibe the movie had. my seconde point is the music. music is such an important element of the movie. and i love this kind of distorted teen music. i think many can agree with me, that the opening song with the band practicing, is one of the best opening songs of movies in general. so why is the intro of the show in japanese? why is ring of fire by johnny cash playing at the end of ep 4? this doesn't fit at all. this is such a missed opportunity in my opinion. i don't get why there are so many little weird sequences in the show. the weirdest of them all is when ramona is just getting sexually harassed by straight wallace. thank god ramona leaves disgusted by the actor but then the camera is clearly focusing on her ass? then the creepy, disgusting look of straight wallace? this whole sequence comes out of nowhere and doesn't contribute anything to the story. so why is it even a thing? why is envy literally turning scotts funeral into a concert a thing? i get that it portrays envy very well and i like that, but people grieving over scotts death sudddenly dancing to envys music is too fucked up. why is todd falling for wallace like that? getting a tattoo of someone 3 days after meeting this someone is very creepy and again not contributing anything to the story. thats the main problem i have. in contrast i like that the movie progresses so fast. it cuts right to the point without rushing it. the show creates so many subplots, which kind of do not matter, and therefore fabricates this mess. my ideas: cut the whole premise of neil producing a movie. it's such a mess of unimportant subplots, which don't really contribute anything to the story. cut the paparazzi, cut todd falling for wallace, cut the conflict between mathew and gideon, cut julie falling for gideon, cut gideon secretely planing an evil plan and get to the point. this whole seqeunce of all characters being on the movie set costs 5 of 8 episodes. i want more like ramona fighting roxy and her eventually apologizing for her toxic behaviour and more like ramona talking to lucas revealing him to be a great guy with flaws. i want more of ramona confronting her past and her growing as a person. more of knives growing as a person and more of kim and sex bob-omb in general. when you cut the unneccesary "neil producing a movie" parts you have more room for ramona developing and more room for the whole time travel stuff. maybe then the finale wouldn't feel rushed and wouldn't be such a mess. you really could go for scott confronting himself and his issues. so idk, the idea of subverting expactations is great, but the execution is kinda bad. it could have been great. i really wish it would have been, but for me it's neither good nor bad. it's mediocre.

I'm here wondering if this fixes the "Scott Pilgrim ruined a generation of women" complaint that was rampant around the internet back when the series first got popular. You know, since Ramona is the lead basically.

As a person with little to no knowledge of the original source material, and only having watched the movie before seeing the show, I just feel like (Spoilers below) Older+Even Older Scott weren't convincing as potential future Scotts to me, they were just... stupid. The entire reason they did all of that was over three words said one time, whereas present day Scott was nowhere near that incompetent. Needed a better reason to do what he did when the tension was so high, I felt so let down with what was given. Aside from that, I loved the entire show so much, it's hilarious

I've never consumed any Scott Pilgrim media and I followed the world building and story just fine. It's a good show. I have no problem with it.

I'm still annoyed by the current thrend of bait and switch and also to change the protagonist to an empowered woman. However judging by your review, the show doesn't seem that bad. So I'm going to wait until the hype dies down and maybe watch it, I'm not in a hurry.

I felt cheated because i too was expecting a full adaptation of the comics but that doesn't change this was a good show, that aside while in real life it's bad the sluttiness of Wallace made me love him lol maybe what i wanted was seeing just as Wallace made the guy turn gay make the girlfriend (i can't remember names) turn Wallace bisexual, i don't know if that would be in character but it would be pretty funny

as a fan of both the comics and the movie and now the anime, i love how none of the adaptations are a perfect replica of the comics, each piece of media feels almost like its own entity while still maintaining that scott pilgrim charm. exploring different things in each makes them feel like they actually have a purpose (rather than just being a cash grab like many sequels and live action movies now a days) it’s pretty cool too cuz it’s like we’re slowly getting our own scott pilgrim multiverse! and i love that with the anime we are able to see alternate ideas from the creator that r so new and fresh that we’d never get to see otherwise! as a longtime fan it feels like an even better treat than just an anime covering all the beats of the og-i just love love seeing the universe expanding and growing! it makes me so excited about what else the future has in store for scott pilgrim!!

I mean I can understand the disappointment if you're looking forward to the book story, but I thought the anime was f***ing brilliant and will watch it again and again.

Honestly if you wanna watch good animation and fights maybe watch the show. Otherwise just watch anime who have a semi vibes like fooly cooly. I wanted to like it by its own merit but honestly, it was a let down. I kept watching just to see Scott finally

I liked it, was a little disappointed it wasn't a more faithful adaptation. I almost wish it has a season per book and the content from this included as a form of adaptation expansion. Either way, it was a good Scott Pilgrim content regardless.

I liked it, and people need to understand that This Timeline B only Exists because Timeline A Exists and I see it as a sequel to the comics not not the movie as it's the only way to explain how Scott is still this asshole in the future who keeps falling upwards.

I feel click baited wich is the only reason I don’t like it, in the trailers and clips they showed mainly ep.1 which was the movie material. Making us feel like we were getting a tv adaptation Instead of telling or showing us what we were actually getting.

I had a passing understanding of the show and never read the comics and I think I understood all that stuff pretty decently.
