The best way to put it is it's like being a professional companion to men of high stations. The men they entertain are their patrons. They can be persuaded to become 'kept women', mistresses through courtship, gifts, favors etc. It is quite different from contracting a prostitute just for one night. Of course these women have to be attractive to these men by more than just looks. I can see this as being a very good position to be in, for women who cannot normally marry above their station. I like to think they have a lot more financial freedom and autonomy instead of being someone's wife who's only place is the home. It's certainly better than being a servant

frequently they were the daughters of courtesans; otherwise there was no precise career path

@@INOBT100 The model is more like the figure skater's mother: often the successful courtesan was the daughter of a less sucessful courtesan. But certainly Marie Duplessis was not an example of this pattern. She was an example of probably the 2nd most common pattern: she was a poor girl on her way to prostitution who rose to a fancier level due to her greater beauty and talents.

debutantes are socialites, female offspring of High Society - they are debuted (day byoo'd) when they make their social 'coming out' at the annual Debutante Ball. No amount of new money (nouveau riche) makes one a member of High Society - they only welcome in whomever they deem have the 'breeding' to be welcomed in (remember Elly May Clampett?). Celebrities are something completely different - the term means 'stars'.

Many courtesans weren't really about counting every penny, but also were invested in their role as an elusive but sensual companion. It's like a role playing that grants them BOTH wealth and status as a sexual symbol.
