If you’re trying to decide what flat top grill should I buy, then I’m here to help! While I can’t tell you exactly what griddle you should buy, because everybody’s needs and preferences are different, I can help you to narrow it down to what griddle is best for you!
In this video, I’ll go over 8 different things to consider when buying a new griddle… whether you’re looking at a Blackstone griddle, a Camp Chef flat top grill, a Pit Boss griddle, or a completely different griddle.
This video is Video #1… Video #2 is going to be a Pros and Cons of each of the griddles that we have and use regularly. In that video, we’ll go over things that we like and don’t like about the Blackstone Griddle Air Fryer Combo, the Pit Boss Ultimate Griddle, and the Camp Chef Flat Top Grill 600… so look out for that video coming soon.
So what are the 8 things to think about before buying a griddle, so you can make the best decision for you:
1.Griddle size and number of burner
2. Surface material of the griddle
3. Hood or no hood
4. Portability
5. What type of grease management system
6. Your budget
7. Pre-seasoned vs. season yourself
8. Extra features that you want
We’ll talk about all of these things in this griddle buying video!

***UPDATE - There have been a TON of comments about whether or not metal utensils can be used on the Pit Boss Ultimate Griddle. I had previously received information that metal utensils could be used. However, after reaching out for clarification, questions about warranty issues, etc., my personal advice going forward would be to use metal utensils at your own risk. The actual User’s Manual states that “the best utensils to use are wood, silicone, or nylon, as these materials will reduce the wear on the cooking surface”. My integrity and the integrity of the information that I present to you is my number one priority! I apologize for any confusion.

This was a great video Neal! I’ve been toying with getting a flat top griddle. I have the 17 inch Blackstone indoor but it’s obviously limited in capacity as well as functionality. My biggest concern is how the wind affects each of the flat tops you have! I’m hoping that you can maybe address this in part 2. You’re a wealth of knowledge and it’s very much appreciated! Cheers brother!

The Camp Chef FTG600 has been my workhorse for years, it has never let me down. I even built an outdoor kitchen around it. I got a 22" Blackstone I for tailgating, the fire blows out if you look at it the wrong way. If I had to do it over again I'd but a small electric ceramic griddle and run it off the outlet in my truck bed. Great tips!

Happy Easter Flat Top King! Let me tell you brother I am sooooo glad you brought up being able to use metal utensils on this Pit Boss Ceramic Coated Griddle. We made French toast on this Bad Boy this morning and we decided that it wasn’t worth the effort and had lost or mojo to keep on fighting the fight. It seems that everything had a tendency to stick to the griddle and if the griddle wasn’t over laden with oils a butter it didn’t matter what we cooked on it it would stick if using silicone utensils. We’ve used this thing about 10 times and to be honest with you we were seriously going to take this thing back or put it on the curb to let someone else fight for the cause. It made the camp Chef and Black Stone look pretty darn attractive. Thank you for your videos and honesty and keep up the good work. God Bless!!!

Great video Neal! For my needs, which were mostly cooking for a family of 4, 5 in future, occasionally cooking for 8-10 if we have a gathering, I decided on a Members Mark (Sams Club in the Northeast) 5 burner rolled still griddle with a hood for 400 bucks, came with soft cover as well. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase! Between you and the Waltwins, I believe I made the perfect purchase for my needs. Cannot wait for nicer weather here in the northeast so I can cook on this thing almost every night. 5 Burner rolled steel griddle with hood and storage for propane tank and soft cover from sams club for $400 plus tax. Now saying that I cook cast iron inside so seasoning was a breeze for me.... I only wish I had a hinged cover instead of the lightweight flat cover it came with. Good breakdown! My first flat top was a black stone. I liked it but it didn't feel right pushing the oil to the back and I felt I should have got a bigger grill. So, I got the camp chief 900 with 6 burners and I have no complaints. It fits what I want and I have plenty of room and better control over the temp. I'm sure this video will help people understand, to buy what is going to work for them.

@@TheFlatTopKing I cook for 2 to 4 on the norm. I was a short order cook in my 20's and those grills are bigger. On the black stone it felt like I was always running out of room and it became a balancing act sometimes. (Kids don't eat like adults) The surprise to the 600 is temp control. I played with it for a bit, and got it to 500 on the right dropping to 200 on the far left. I can make eggs and pancakes on one end and all my meat on the other side. and anything else in the middle. It's a case of bigger is better lol. When we do have people over the 3 things, they want are Cheese steak, chop cheese, and smash burgers. The most I fed was 32 adults, 12 kids and never had a problem, and never ran out of room. Something else I did was I had a gas line run so I don't use propane any more.

The only issue I have is here in east Texas if you don’t cook on it for a month or 2 expect a lil rust to start showing up, even if you have oiled it after the last use and kept it covered. Ok, let me start off by saying quite a while back I was looking for a cast iron pizza instructional video and ran up on your channel (charcoal king back then). That was when I believe you started and the pizza video was just days old. I was also interested in a flat top. Went with the FTG600 and haven’t looked back. Pulling the grease towards me and not having the front lip was key to my decision. There is a diamond plated cover for the FTG600 that works perfect for me sold on the internet. That big dome Cuisine cover is enough for my steaming. There’s a lot more I could say but I’m getting in to the tl;dr territory. I still make that pizza about once a month as my family loves it. I don’t care what you are cooking on, I’m still going to watch you. GBO

@TheFlatTopKing
@TheFlatTopKing 2 года назад
I get this question all the time... and it's so hard to answer. Think of each griddle like one of your kids... You could never pick a favorite kid, because you love them all. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses. I really do love all 3 of the griddles that I have, and I think that any one of them would be a good choice if you're looking to buy a griddle - the only thing I would say is consider how often you would actually use the air fryer on the Blackstone to determine if it's worth spending the extra money for you, because it is such a big price difference. I've had the Camp Chef the longest of the three, and I used it about 2-3 times a week for a solid 18 months before getting the other ones, and it's held up really well/really well built. The Pit Boss is really easy to use, clean, and maintain. And I've been impressed with the Blackstone cooking surface/heat, but I don't like the grease trap in the back... it's really about personal preference and what your needs/budget are.

It would be great to compare burner design and listed BTU specs and what is ultimately important, heat distribution at cooking settings. Comparing the round burners of some Camp Chefs and the tubular burners of others in combination with any heat spreaders/diffusers welded under the flat top and to keep from warping. And the importance of BTU's on cooking, other than pot boiling left to those 200K BTU furnaces. Thanks

Thanks for a super instructive video. I'm in the market for a propane grill & griddle combo for my backyard deck (north-facing). Basically, I love to grill my lean steaks and lamb rare and griddle most other things... (We lived in Australia for a while and there almost everybody owns just a flat top steel griddle - which I learned to love. To boot, almost any campground there - those that're not in the real bush, that is - even has a permanent push-button gas-fired stainless-steel griddle installed!) Back here in Canada, I want to be able to BBQ until there's too much snow accumulation to go out onto the deck. Since our north-facing yard is inherently exposed to prevailing northwest winds, I can't agree with you enough that a hood is not just a good idea, but downright essential. I haven't come across any yet, but ideally I'd love to find a stainless steel top as part of my combo, but if that proves not to be an option, I'll certainly want to make sure the griddle (especially if it's an iron one) is easily detachable so it can be moved into the house for the winter: cast iron and winter here really don't get along...).
