My personal opinion is biased against communism, but if you want to read on why communism failed, I believe Socialism Betrayed by Keeran and Kenny is something you should read (or a summary maybe || I haven't finished it myself). I am specifically recommending this because this book is somewhat pro Soviet Union so you will find the other side of arguments that why communism was working for Soviet Union but failed. And also, because you mentioned Gorbachev and one of the main ideas of this book is that it was Gorbachev's policies (perestroika mainly) behind the reason of the collapse. I don't think Gorbachev was a weak leader, his policies were allowing things that had never happened in 70 years. But Yeltsin and likes wanted things to change faster and eventually his supporters became his opposers on both sides of the spectrum. 3.) No idea. Majority of Indian exports went to USSR and also because of that India missed out on the free trade deals sponsored by USA
