It has to start at some point right? For Gerald, what triggered it was, as he said, for the first time in a long time, he was watching the reviews on the other side, the side of the consumers.

I think this was just a powder keg waiting to be sparked. Gerald had an opportunity to be briefed on the camera ahead of the event and was at least somewhat aware of the products shortcomings and limitations. I read about the camera and after watching 5-6 or more videos on the S9, very VERY few people spent much time discussing these limitations or highlighting how the camera is held back. It paints the camera in a more flattering light than it may really deserve. The S9 is honestly a niche camera and its restrictions in photography, video record times, lack of headphone jack, no hot shoe for ANY flash because it only has an electronic shutter….yeah, the product is HIGHLY limited in who it would work for. Sadly, many of these reviews I watched didn’t really talk too much about how severely limiting these attributes could be - and you bet your butt there was an affiliate link in the descriptions to hopefully get some kick back from a sale.

You didn’t hear criticism on Sony cameras? Really? Confirmation bias is real dude! No other camera manufacturer has received more mixed feedback than Sony (from rolling shutter, awful ergonomics, lackluster led panels, menus, same sensors, the list is endless) Gerald’s dead on with his video on all fronts
@JamesJacksonFilmz
@JamesJacksonFilmz 3 месяца назад
The level of critisism that other company get is far more pronounced than most of the critisicm Sony gets in the past couple of years. most of those things you brought up are from the A6000s and Gen 2 era of Sony's. They're cameras still have flaws and no one is arguing they don't get criticized, but the level of criticism and heated discussions that Panasonic is getting (and Canon, Blackmagic and Nikon at other points the past few years as well) is far more vocal than the criticism that Sony or DJI get from there cameras. Just look at the coverage the Sony Burano got compared to the coverage of the Blackmagic Pyxis. There's arguments that the pyxis less issues than the Burano at significantly higher cost (bad rolling shutter, IR Pollution using the ND Filters, limited sensor recording options ect), but the Burano criticism was no where nearly as harsh compared a camera that's a fraction of it's cost.

Thanks for the commentary. I in some ways am happy that it sparked open conversations. Like you I don't think we need the drama but feedback is usually valuable. If I was changing camera systems and making videos about how great my new camera is or how it's the best ever every week...it would be fatiguing to the audience and I would hope that someone would call me out so I could learn and evolve. I think that is what was the driving force behind the drama that unfolded. People are kind of over the "I'm switching to" or "the ULTIMATE XYZ" from some of the creators who took the brunt of the comment hits. Back to Gerald's video though, I think he made an excellent point about censorship and that to me is an even bigger topic because of the way it implicates the "RU-vidr reviewers". From some of the comments it looks like some of the RU-vidrs got defensive which helped spark the flames. Personally, I'm like if the shoe fits...and if it doesn't then don't shoehorn yourself into the mix. IRL none of this actually matters right, we're all adults and we should all have the ability to reason and make decisions for our selves without seeking validation for our purchases.

My advise is that you read Robin Wongs blog he wrote on this topic. Look at Robinwong.blogspot. Robin himself was former Olympus employee and former Olympus ambassador. I agree with him 100%. As he said this was done before the creation of You Tube and by all companies. If you are black listen or not invited then you are not relevant as you think you are. Also Gerard does not understand the function of media which is a way that producers show their products to their markets. Gordon Laing of Cameras replied to Gerard that he has been for 30 years a journalist covering cameras for different magazine and as a journalist you go to all this events to inform your audience of new products or new trends. That is the function of media. Some will like the products other don’t.

I've seen so many videos on the LUMIX event. Personally, I think it's gotten out of hand. After hearing about the Insta360 issue - which I think is much worse then LUMIX's situation - I am not surprised by what's been happening. LUMIX, along with other camera manufacturers, are businesses. Businesses will do what they do to generate sales, etc. Sometimes they get carried away, like Insta360. But, I think the LUMIX situation has been beaten like a dead horse. One RU-vidr even went as far as saying that LUMIX is "dead". Sorry, but, that is total hyperbole. Other businesses, not just camera manufacturers, have behaved in similar fashion and paid the price. But, they tend to bounce back after correcting their course. For myself, I am more concerned with the content creators reviews. Too often content creators treat their reviews as if they're factual and more than their opinion. I only trust a few RU-vid content creators myself when it comes to camera and lens reviews. LUMIX will recover I believe. But, I am still more critical of reviewers more so than manufacturers.

It's happening now because subjectively consumers are saying the S9 is rather disappointing, but the RU-vidrs who were flown out are just making hype videos without proper authenticity and honesty. The fear of being cancelled as Gerald mentioned by a brand for being too critical of their products. Unfortunately, the RU-vidrs who went got bad comments because they seemed like shills without having a true voice. That's where the big issues come up.

They had fun with the camera but they warn about the absence of the evf, headphone jack, mechanical shutter, the disappointing f8 lens, the recording limitations. All this hate is a bit ridiculous. My biggest problem is that these companies bring in influencers who are not in the target market of the product. I don't think it would have been too difficult with the S9. If the focus of the camera is short-form video then invite people who make RU-vid Shorts, TikTok, and Reels. However, it would mean shorter and less thorough reviews. I think that would fit the target market anyway.

I think camera reviewers take themselves too seriously. Jerry goes on a rant because he felt left out.... I've been purchasing and using cameras for 50 years and I've never purchased a camera because a reviewer loved it, nor did I ever not purchase a camera because they hated it. I watch reviews to see what the product looks like and I make a decision based on how I would use it. I used to watch the CC guy way back when he was in another country then moved back to Canada but I watched him for entertainment and never took anything he said seriously. I got tired of him and unsubscribed years ago but most reviewers have their own deal and if they can make money from it then good for them. They don't want to hear this but nobody needs them anymore as you can return anything you don't like so if you need a camera then just buy one. Don't like it return it and buy something else. We should do a go fund me to send Jerry to Japan.

Well factor in the Cost of actually buying a Given product as opposed to being flown over to places like Japan. So I am not buying into the theory of flipping the cost in that context. Factor in waiting wayyy after the Gear Launch and then using YOUR own Money to buy or pay for a loaner. Also, any REAL so call Pro isn't go to have an real issue using a CAMERA. It's not Rocket Science. Now setting up a Cinema camera, sure, most reviewers likely can't just do that. But I am speaking of not those types of cameras. But Non Cinema. This is literally what BUILT the fame and fortune of many of the Big YTube Channels. But sure, now it's costing them money, well don't go, problem solved. Buy/rent and review the Gear after you have used your own funds, problem solved. So I don't want to hear all the yTubers, crying me a River.

I'll agree with the repackaging of sensors by Sony gets not much attention but, when the others do the same, they get flak. A 12MP sensor camera for $3,500? The other guys would get roasted over this however, it was waved off as "good enough" for photos as who needs more than that, lol! Later came the FX3, FR7 and ZV-E1 (I think there is another PTZ that uses that sensor, don't remember the name), with some additional software features, which Sony will not add to existing cameras as they want to sell the new camera, at inflated prices for the class it competes in. All manufacturers from what I've seen use similar sensors in their line up or their newer camera, they shouldn't get grief if the other guys isn't.

No Major brands (very few) use RU-vid as a outlet to buy their products. "Free trip" - its on you (tubers) to capitalize on these events, find doors to open and advance in the "business". IMO it must be hard AF to get only two days or so with a camera and be expected to do a full, thorough review. For example, I think Chris and Jordan did a good job, given the time constraints. The real test is after the reviewer has had at least a month to play with it. What reviewers should do is emphasize that this first review is a "first look" only, with a fuller review to come later. Some are better at that than others. The S9, while we're on the subject, seems to be a very odd release. It's aimed at vloggers and content creators. But such short recording time limits? No IBIS? Why? Just to save space? [EDIT: the S9 has IBIS. But video in numerous recording modes is cropped. Also, no EVF, a cold shoe instead of a hot shoe, so no flash. No headphone port. Last, its implementation of LUTs seems confusing for the beginner videographer the S9 is aimed for.]

Panasonic give all around 150 content creators a camera for loaner for a long period of time. So this is not a problem or any issue at all. So this whole argument of Gerard Undone is none sense. The problem he has is that Lumix is inviting many You Tubers around the world periodically to their events. After the event and embargo everyone post a video. But why he does care about this videos? Is it his time and effort? Why does he says that does initial videos does not get views and hence not revenue? Did he asked that this people care about the views that they are missing by releasing this videos? Drama creates drama. Bottom line is if someone is trying to make their living on RU-vid and has a following, brands may come knocking for an opportunity to advertise their products. The money the brands are spending are ADVERTISING dollars, they expect to get good publicity from their advertising dollars and if they don't they will use it elsewhere. The entitlement of some RU-vidrs and the seeming inability to understand this is the real issue here, not the fact that brands expect their advertising dollars to work for them. Grow up RU-vid.

Wasn't the issue raised is regarding how different camera companies react differently to the reviewer's first impressions of their new launches and that influences the type of video that is put out? The fear of stepping on the toes of the more vindictive brands makes it harder to put a more balanced first impression/review, especially for new camera reviewers who are trying to build up their viewer base. Some companies accept the critiques and take it into account in future product development while others just stop sending invites to product launches.

Regarding Sony I’m not agree with you. The ZV line is for Vloggers but not videographers has the FX line. For photographers there is the A7 line. An example is that many photographers hate fan or flippy screen where videographers hate overheating and want no record limit. Here is the problem that you need to bring different bodies for the different use cases. The base technology is the same, but the experience and use is different.
@JamesJacksonFilmz

Okay. I hear you but answer me this question. If the ZV-1 has the same sensor as the A7s3 same ISO performance, same recording capabilities (for the most part) and same functionality as an A7s 3 but stripped down and has more limitations and overheats more often. How is it better for content creators if they can get the same exact results with the higher end camera? That’s literally the exact same thing Panasonic did with the S9 compared to the S5 II.

@@JamesJacksonFilmz Because the ZV line is for you tubers that does not understand or care about specs. Sorry but many does not understand that some people wants to take pictures and make video of quality without having the feeling to be an engineer or technician. Hence you have to stripped the camera down. Another You Tuber who went to the event and came back with the S9 said that his girlfriend, owner of a restaurant, took the camera and use it to make photos and videos on social media to promote her restaurant. At that moment he understand immediately why the dumb down this camera. To make it less technical and intimidating for the user who doesn’t want to be a professional or hobbyist videographer or photographer.

They are all looking to gain our trust by sounding like they don't care about money and views 🤷🏽‍♂️

That why he did it after not being invited and after everyone poster their video and he did not have click for his revenue.

I'm pretty sure that was not the reason. He does well without any of this. Don't for a second think this was deliberate.
