What happened to Aviationweather.gov!?!

Aviationweather.gov used to be one of the best kept weather secrets in Aviation. You used to be able to find almost all the standard weather briefing information, and several tools that helped make flight planning more efficient. However, in October of 2023, they made major changes to the site. Did they break it?
Warning: The information provided in this video is for demonstration purposes only. The information and results cannot be used for an actual flight. To plan an actual flight, you will need to use the information in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook, and the other documents associated with the specific airplane you fly.

The wind graphical tool is so much more useful and i will have no problem explaining this to the DPE. The winds aloft table is just not as accurate or helpful. It's time to get with the times. Things change and improvements are made. I wanted to make sure I had accurate wind info to calculate my wind correction / headings. I am going to use the most accurate data and it's my PIC decision. On another note, I do agree that many student pilot rely to much on Foreflight and I believe in the Hand written Nav-Log. It helps you understand what is going on instead of a black box. Plus I can see my paper nav log really easy. PS, I am a student pilot studying for my checkride.

Excellent! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! To me, it was very enlightening to hear from NOAA that they recommend using the new wind tool rather than expanding and encouraging use of the older model. And, if you can use the new wind tool and still do your own calculations, you should be able to use the old observations if you are asked to do so… The process is the same, it is just the coverage and granularity of the tool that has improved. I am so glad to hear you are working toward your check ride! Best of luck and keep us updated!

Personally, I love the new aviationweather.gov. I much prefer the graphical displays rather than interpolation.

I do as well. However, until this past update to the ACS (where it specifically mentions the GFA tool), I knew of some DPE that weren’t too keen on candidates using it. Thanks for the comment!

Where is the formerly excellent prog chart big picture function-that used to let me watch fronts and systems advance across hours/days?
@ScottKoonCFI
@ScottKoonCFI 4 месяца назад
Well, it has changed, but you can get a couple of proximations. First, if you go to Products>Prog Charts, you’ll get an interactive map that allows you to move through the NOAAs 6 hour surface analysis charts and significant weather forecasts. Like the GFA tool, there is a time slider, the ability to put your flight path in, and the ability to modify multiple items on the map. There is also the ability to view static images and march through them. This can be found by going to Tools>Decision Support Imagery. Then select “WPC prog chart”. You can use the hourly buttons to walk through the list of available images. I hope this helps at least a little. Thanks for the question!

I miss the old prog chart thumbs page, on a iPad you can quickly zoom day to day on the thumbs page and compare while looking at multiple days simultaneously.

I agree, the thumbs were a really quick way to get a sense of what was coming. It would be good to still be able to do that. On the other hand, I also really like the new Prog Chart tool (under the Products menu). Like the other visual tools, it allows you to put your flight path on the map, then allows you to walk through them step-by-step. You can also select local/UTC for the display, put the sectional as the background, add METAR data (when available) and a couple other neat options. So, I’m a bit torn… Thank you for the comment!

It seems silly to me that any DPE wouldn't let an applicant use Foreflight or Garmin Pilot for flight planning and weather data. I wonder if they think someone applying for a drivers license should take the test in a vehicle with a standard transmission and a hand throttle. I don't know one pilot that is not going to use some sort of automation for flight planning and weather data.
@ScottKoonCFI
@ScottKoonCFI 4 месяца назад
I would generally agree. Regarding weather, part of the impetus for putting together the original video was that I received several requests where it was stated that using the standard briefing was either an instructor or a “known DPE requirement”. Since the DPE weren’t identified, I couldn’t follow up to see if they really required it or if it was a misinterpretation. I do know of several DPE that will ask a lot more questions when Private Pilot candidates show up with their flight plan completely done by Foreflight or Garmin pilot. They want/need to know that candidates understand the process and can do the planning, decision making, and calculations by hand. From their perspective, using the automation is fine as long as the candidate could do the process by hand but chose the automation because it was faster. Thank you for the comment! To others: What are your thoughts? What is your experience?

Did the wind reduce to 6 knots or 10 knots? I thought the 6+ was the greater than 6 miles vis.
@ScottKoonCFI
@ScottKoonCFI 4 месяца назад
You are correct. They reduce to 10 knots. You are also correct 6+ is visibility. Unfortunately, I can’t claim that as the reason for the error. When I wrote the script points, I originally used a forecast from a different day. With the new forecast, I updated the winds at KRST but missed changing them for the southern areas. Thank you for catching that. Thank you for the comment. Sorry for the confusion.
