Kevin Magnussen's career is somewhat of an enigma. Having had a lot of success in his junior career and a stunning debut race for McLaren, he's never hit the same heights and quickly became 'the villain of F1'. He's one of the hardest racing drivers on the grid - sometimes a bit too hard. This has caused him to divide opinions on him and harmed his reputation. Here, Jeb and I take a look back through his career and where it all went wrong for him.

Great video Ben!! I’m actually a big fan of magnussen lol. I think he’s a great driver who really missed out on some good shots. This video was super informative and brought back many memories!

Thank you Keira. His career is a strange one for me. On his debut, we were all talking about how he was a World Champion in the making, but that didn’t go as planned. I think he’s a good driver - very open and doesn’t sugar-coat anything. He’s a very traditional racing driver in that sense and also with his seemingly reckless manoeuvres. But I do think he deserves a seat in F1 which I doubt he’ll ever get again.

I believe Magnussen could have massive success in a decent car. He delivers great car control, big entertainment, he is brave and a truly hard racer. Look what he can do in poor cars.... imagine what he could do in great cars ❤️❤️ I will truly miss his great overtakes. Massa against the wall I will never forget, and his commitment in a burning hot car in Singapore. The fun he had with three World Champions behind him in Spa 14❤️🤩

Fair assessment. Certainly one of the "what if" crowd. McLaren were going through a phase of doing a number on drivers careers at the time. Clearly talented but in F1 that makes you average and if you're not in the right place at the right time you're Stoffel Vandoorne.

I'm a dane, even from the same city as K-Mag, and obviosly a huge fan of him. But i truly think that we have never seen his full potential unleashed. He is, in my opinion, one of the fastest guys out there. Could he challenge Lewis or Max in a similar car? Maybe not, but he would be right there in their slipstream, giving them a hard time. The engineers who has worked with him over the years knows what he can do i a racecar. But i'm actually happy to se him leave F1 to join IMSA, and hopefully get a more competitive car. In a couple of years, he will get the recognition that he deserves, and people will think to themselves "why didn't that amazing driver stay in F1?" :-)

Also heard that he was so far away from McLaren and the paddock in 2015, that he at Spa that year was a normal spectator. He and some of his friends had paid for the cheapest tickets, and then driven all the way to belgium in a caravan, where they also slept! Pretty surreal, considering he was in F1 for a mighty team like McLaren just the year before.

I like Kmag because for me he is an old school through and through racer and unapologetically unfiltered outside of the car which is something I as a fan appreciate. The problem he has is he's always been found wanting in terms of raw pace. Similar to Albon he is fearless and entertaining to watch in a dogfight but is unable to match the speed of some of the better drivers you find on the grid. His time in F1 is now over in my opinion, I don't see any other team wanting to take him but I could see he him having a great end to his career in which ever form of motorsport he next decides to take up.
@BMPHF1
@BMPHF1 3 года назад
Agreed. He definitely has that old school mentality that works for him and against him at the same time. I, as a fan, also appreciate his openness and immense passion for racing. I think his aggressive style works against him in that he struggles to take good care of his tyres and make some reckless decisions. Nevertheless, he will most likely go on to succeed in another motor racing category e.g. IndyCar. Thanks for watching!
@binilgn5941

gary the fish How can you conclude that he lacks pace? You can only compare a driver to their teammate, and he has beaten his teammate more often than not in his career
@garythefishable
@garythefishable 3 года назад
@@binilgn5941 Very true but Kmag was obliterated by Button in his debut season, the only top class teammate he ever had. Now you could argue it's unfair to judge a driver on his debut so we will skip that and Palmer for obvious reasons and let's talk about Grosjean. Grosjean was a driver who was comfortably bested by a past it Kimi Raikkonen and his lackluster second stint at Ferrari really demonstrated just how far he had fallen. Grosjean was seemingly easy pickings but still managed to outscore Kmag in the 2017 season. Kmag has since improved but has never enjoyed anywhere near the same kind of margin over Grosjean that Raikkonen had. This took Kmag off the radar of other teams so while I'm sad we are losing a personality I completely understand why teams thought it better to look elsewhere when choosing there 2021 driver lineups.

@@BMPHF1 Well. McLaren was on a downwards spiral at the time, it was all in the middle of this season they got another podium finish since neither Button nor Alonso managed to match what KMag did in his first race. Essentially KMag has never had a F1 seat in a top team car, most of his good results has been from races where the chances being taken paid of and when always take chances at times you also miss big time. When you think about it when was the last time a F1 driver was great from year one. Hamilton is a great example of a driver that was great from the start, but he had testing experience time worth many races and KMag had something like three testing days. Essentially Hamilton had learned F1 tire management before his first race, something KMag had to learn while racing and being expected to perform against Button.

Probably the most honest and true video about k-mags F1 career! The only thing I can point at is that in the end of his Renault season, you say, he might lost his faith in the team, that is true, but it was because they favored Palmer (doe to his signing the year after) to make him look good, so Palmer got all the new spare parts for the final races… You can find several pictures of k-mags Renault with gaffa tape on his car in the final races… But nevertheless, awesome video 

Keven just entered F1 at a time where the sport in general, and still is, in a bad place. Old drivers entered the sport at a time where driving ment something, and the 2nd year at Mclaran proved that. No matter how good you are, you need to be a HUGE name that attracts sponsers, or you need to pay for your drive in order to make a name. So unless you have a loaded pop pop, you dont have a chance. Teams are struggeling for cash, and the sport is not generating money anymore compared to what it use to. Also he is from Denmark, that means a HUGE uphill battle for sponsers that will pay for F1. Had he been from England, Germany, France og Italy then i think he would have gone all the way.

Unless you're very very lucky/rich getting a real shot in F1 is impossible. KMag got a foot in the door with Mclaren, only it was in a year where their down turn really started happening. It took onto the mid of this season for them to have another podium finish. So the thing is KMag has never been with a really good F1 team, as illustrated that even Button did have better result than even while out scoring him points wise (KMag qualified better than Button). WHen a so-so or worse car in F1, then one has to take chances in order to have a shot at points and taking chances always pushing to the max means times where you look clumsy or worse. However the alternative is just crussing at the back, being essentially an also-ran. Now some say that KMag ought to have been as good as Hamilton was when he started, but they forget that back when Hamilton started F1 teams was free to test as they liked so he had many times more the F1 testing than KMag. This essentially meant that starting out Hamilton had many race distances worth of tire management experience, the thing KMag was missing which is why Button had the upper hand during the season (Remember KMag was faster in qually).

Great video, better than the others I've seen about Kmag! 👌 I think you could have found better 2017 examples of “recklessness” than the incidents with Ericson in Australia and Sainz in Spain. The Ericsson incident was a mistake other drivers make too and the Sainz incident I would say is up to debate but the Hulkenberg incident was no doubt too hotheaded and stupid of Kmag. I find his bad boy reputation a bit silly. His driving style is elbows out, but he shares that driving style with others on the grid e.g. Ricciardo, Verstappen or Albon, but he just does not have the car or results to be excused. People want hard racing but only from the popular drivers. So I think that if he is reckless then many drivers are reckless… but they drive F1 so I guess they have to be reckless😅 Also, Kmags reputation is not really supported when looking at FIA penalty points, warnings etc. I have the impression that what slowed him down was his mindset. Like I have seen in other sports, some of those who has been used to winning and being on top, never learned to lose and find motivation in other things when not winning. In a danish interview he kind of said that himself when talking about a good qualifying. Later it seemed that he stated to lose focus to other things in life. I would have liked for him to stay in F1 but it is not the end of the world. There are other interesting drivers!

it went wrong when an aging button out-classed him entirely. we know grosjean is fast on saturday, but the fact that magnussen never truly "took the torch" from grosjean meant no other team was going to try him. if he had a single season where he comprehensively outperformed one of his "benchmark" teammates, I think he would've moved up the field, but by virtue of not quite being that good, he trickled down the grid, and eventually from the grid entirely. I don't get the "what happened to him" crowd, when I haven't seen anyone notice him in his career for a good reason.

As a new fan to F1 what happened to him is HAAS, through watching Netflix you can tell HAAS is not up to par with other team’s car. Also having Romain as teammate doesn’t help either.

I feel really bad for him, he definitely deserves to be on the grid and likely would be if he had better financial backing. If he was at McLaren a few years earlier he could’ve challenged for world championships.

Agree - and lets face it. Coming from a small country brings less funding. Alonso at McLaren, Hulk at Renault. Ron Dennis officially stated that Denmark has to do its part to keep Mag in the car.

Great video again especially with the memes 😂. Anyway, I actually think K-Mag is underrated and had he been at a car that is actually good and has a consistent basis of performance (2018, for example), he would have a much better career IMO in Formula 1 (although, him getting dropped after a relatively decent debut year by McLaren is a sign that unfortunately his career might not be on the upward trajectory he wanted it to be). But hey, at least he has a better F1 career than his father ;)

According to what can be dug up at McLaren he was just as fast as Lewis Hamilton when they compared them both to Jenson Button. In the right car, his talent could have given Lewis, Verstappen and Ricciardo a run for their money. His career was cut short due to lack of sponsor money and the wrong manager.

the sad thing is, there are so many great drivers out there that people would love to see but they aren't able to be in f1. It would be great if there was another series that could house the f1 drivers the got kicked out while still having them compete. they could race at different tracks like how f1 has this year at the Nurburgring, Portimao, Mugello, turkey. kinda like f2 but also not.

McLaren ruined his career by choosing PR and more money over talent and perfomance. I wish Red Bull would have considered him along side Verstappen because they have the same agressive driving style so the car might fit him more than it fitted Gasly and Albon.

Great stuff - and you are exactly right. To my opinion too, KMags F1-career has been characterized by not being at the right place at the right time team-wise. He has been "unlucky" not to be available at the right time for a larger/stronger team. To my view you currently have top drivers like Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc and Russel, and then you have a large number of mid-field drivers, where Mag (again to my opinion) is in the top of that mid-field, and where potentially given the right drive, could have been a F1 World Champion. Now he won't. Too bad.

I don't think K-Mag's talent had such a high ceiling, but, in the right place and in the right time, he could be the runner-up of the drivers championship like Bottas. One thing is for sure, on a merc, he would have better starts than Valteri.

I think it went down for him the day he startet at Hass. There car arent good enough to drive infront like K-mac should do every race. If he was in a mercedes, Redbull or ferraie he would be world champion a few times, I think

I blieve many drivers with multiple season experience in F1 can even win races in a good car. Checo is the latest one who won the race after 9 years. Who knows what would've happened if Grosjean had a RedBull chance instead of Kvyat.

Great video. In my opinion Magnussen's career was destroyed when he got onto that podium in 2014. He spoke about how that race gave him the false illusion that he could be fighting for the championship that year when ultimatly McLaren weren't even near that level. And coupled with the way he was booted from McLaren it ended up taking him all the way until 2017 before he started to regain his shine in F1. And we saw that in 2018 where he without doubt was at the best in his career but then the Rich Energy saga happend and Haas lost pace and once again he was left with a shit car to try and haul points. Was he championship material? Maybe not but he sure was a fast guy and much like Perez and Vandoorne at McLaren, Magnussen was dealt a shit hand which ended up breaking his career before it had really started. I hope his endurance racing career will give him similar succes as his fathers sportscar career did, because Kevin is deffenetly a driver that deserves to win championships.
@BMPHF1
@BMPHF1 3 года назад
100%. I feel he was unfairly given a bad label as a dangerous driver when he was just a very hard racer. As you say, I also hope his endurance career brings the success he deserves. Thanks for watching :)

Yes- Great Video, Thanks! Unfortunately for the last few years he just wasn't capable of outdriving that HAAS. Once they lost 'the handle' on the tires, he hasn't had a chance, then throw in this years Ferrari engine and they still cannot manage the tires for some reason. I don't expect much change next year for HAAS, They just replaced professional drivers with pay drivers. He didn't fail, the car failed him. So, we have him moving unto IMSA next year. F1's loss is America's gain. We'll find out soon enough in the Daytona-24. I'm expecting great things from him, he's already earned a small fortune in F1. If he hasn't squandered it all away... I think he'll win a couple of class championships, like his dad.

Like many that enter the work force or the world you find out that Talent and Skills are just a portion of finding and keeping a job, being liked, getting a promotion or being recognised. It actually has a lot to do with who you know, how they see you, politics and luck. In Kevin's case he had poor luck, poor in politics and poor agent (who you know part).
