Get the wood stove rolling, slice up the bologna & cheese, brush out the floors of tree stands, shuffle the cards and pull up a chair... but do it fast because Saturday we roll! It's time for Pennsylvania's 2019 Deer season! Everyone has their own version of deer camp, but we can all relate to the enjoyment these few short weeks provide each year. Here's a look into what happens at ours... NCPA style! This year's video again captures all of the excitement during the two-week hunt that ended up being one of the oddest season's ever.

I'm turning 60 this year and have shot a ton a big bucks, but my first buck's six inch spike antlers will ALWAYS be in the place of honor above my gun safe. Congrats young man.....you will never forget that first buck!!!

I loved every minute of this video. But the end seeing him run up to his uncle with all that joy and both of y’all being so happy for him brought a tear to my eye. I know he’s your kid but your teaching him to scan the woods with his rifle & sometimes not all his finger goes near the trigger. He’s an excited kid on a deer hunt like we all were so it’s not good teaching him scanning with his rifle. Not a troll, or anti great video.

Great deer great memory. Love your videos ,started orchard two years ago lots of work but very rewarding watching trees grow .Im from va and a couple guys from md for the past 5 years have traveled up to pa and hunted luzerene county. As hunters we really respect and appreciate how much pa hunters are rooted in the true meaning of hunting,you as a state are what hunting is about. Take care and GOD BLESS

Congrats to everyone in your group who made it happen, those are a pile of great looking whitetails! For a second there when I saw your green machine it reminded me of "Wilbur" from the History channel's Mountain Men.

I have been back watching your older videos...very good stuff... Hoping you and your crew are safe in these crazy times ...very surreal... and that green machine, that old truck reminded my of the truck my pap and I worked in back in the day and I had to have it...speaking of back in the day, that tractor at your camp is awesome!! good luck with the food plot this year...and keep them vids coming.. I've watched a number of videos from people in NC Pa deer camps, and all of them reported dismal hunting this season. What do you folks who hunt there attribute the lower deer numbers and harvests to?

Hard to really say there's any truth to it, but one possible theory exists; The Saturday start knocked everything off kilter. With nobody in the woods Saturday and Sunday checking or working on tree stands / blinds, scouting around, sighting guns in and doing whatever it is they normally would do on those 2 days, deer weren't impacted the way they normally would react to such activity. Weather conditions were picture perfect and would have had no negative impact for hunting on the first day so it certainly couldn't have been attributed to the weather. It's also apparent having spoke with and heard from many others, there was nowhere near the participation level as expected on opening day. Less people in the woods + less deer being moved + the idea that deer weren't already on tilt from 2 days of disturbance prior to the opener = a not so stellar reception of the 2019 rifle season.

Rifle season was one of the worst we ever had. Me and my dad hunt over around Arnot. 4 shots Saturday, no shots Monday, and the rest of the time just one, two shots day. I will also be waiting to see the numbers. Have to be low this year. I think the whole thing about starting Saturday. Did not work like the game commission thought I didn’t see any new hunters. Same people that I always see year to year. Epic fail would be my vote for the Saturday hunting start. Back to Monday start would be my vote. Loved the video. You guys do a great job filming. Congrats on your sons first buck. Awesome!!!!! And heck of a shot to. 👍

Really hope the PAGC is upfront and transparent about the numbers in terms of harvest data and license sales. Last thing we want to see is a bunch of cherry-picked numbers coming out. Agree with your assessment of the '19 rifle season.... naturally there were a few poor hunting weather days (snow, rain, wind) but I believe that was only limited to 4 or 5 in total out of the 13 so the lack of gun shots can't be entirely blamed on the weather. Saturday's weather (and the days leading up to it) was seasonal... like Joel said, if there were more people in the woods hunting this year - PAGC's goal - they certainly weren't harvesting any deer. Idk how they can accurately establish the amount of deer harvested. I'm guessing most people probably dont even report their harvest. They probably just fill their tags out and leave them in a drawer somewhere

As a hunter ed instructor it is always nice to see the little guys and girls getting it done. I remember my first buck was a small spike but to this day those little antlers still hang on the wall as if he was a giant great video and way to create family memories

We were watching last night when the video premiered and he said he started shaking again in the moments leading up to his shot... buck fever even watching the replay! HA!! His excitement the last few weeks, though, has been driving. He's loves it and has been doing a good bit of it during flintlock season so he's hoping to help the rest of us get a deer.

That's awsome, congratulations on his first deer. Northern PA, was rough this year imo. 18 guys on a lease we killed 2 doe and a 7pt. I shot one doe up there and 2 doe in archery down in southern PA. Good luck with the flintgun, managed to hit a tree with mine instead of the deer lol.

A great story of a kids first deer.At 76 I stayed in Lancaster county and took a 170 lb doe in the October senior hunt.243 at about 15 yards.

Hey great job on that buck! Dropped him right in his tracks. Great stuff & congrats! Regarding the opener I am a fan of it starting on Saturday. Due to work it is tough to get off on Mondays, and if I do get off I still have to keep up with work to a degree when I am out there. So being able to hunt Saturday is no problem, and I was able to fully immerse myself in the hunt which was great. I hunted out of a camp for the opener for many years so I do see that side of it as well. It will be interesting to see what the GC does. I have a feeling they are going to have it open again on Saturday, and then use one of the Sunday hunt days as well. So you will be able to hunt both Saturday & Sunday opening weekend. But who knows, we shall see. Whatever day they decide to open I will try to get out there and enjoy it. Enjoy the videos as always!

I hope im never in the woods when that kid has a gun, shooting bench closing his eyes isn't safe. Funny how quick he got the gun turned on those deer right before dark on the first day SATURDAY and earlier he was giving saturday hunting the thumbs down. More action on saturday than monday.

We got the same snowstorm here in Wisconsin, on the Saturday, our second to last day, almost 10 inches, great video, I remember my first buck, one of my greatest memories

We love snow during rifle season. However, this specific storm brought a heavy wet snow that stuck to every branch. This drastically reduced our limited visibility in the dence hardwoods. We are so proud of our young hunter. He is serious, responsible and enjoys hunting and the outdoors!

The Saturday opener really stinks in my opinion. For the working man who hunts out of a camp there is time to do nothing. I have to get off work, drive the 3 plus hours to camp, unload supplies, and basically go to bed without any scouting, stand maintenance, or any fun that would usually go on with other members of the camp. Then to top it off you can’t hunt the next day. The game commission said they changed it to get more people into the woods. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t see any more people than usual in the woods or parking areas, maybe less. Plus being so close after bear season the deer never really had a chance to settle back into their normal routine. I don’t know about you but I say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. “

I saw two does and a 4 point on Saturday. I hunted all week after and saw nothing. All the snow we got stuck to the trees and made visibility very poor. It was like looking at a wall of snow. It was really cool to watch that young man get his first buck! Make sure to put the rack on a plaque and hang it at your camp. How did you guys finally make out?

@@douglastanney2509 The weather definitely impacted a small portion but overall, rifle season was unlike none other in the last decade. Nobody was seeing deer or hearing anywhere near the shots they expected or were use to... no matter who you talked to. Coming out of flintlock season we ended the deer year with his spike and a 6, that's it.

We had 13 total guys hunting between 2 camps and all that was taken was a small 8 point. I also talked to other hunters and they said the same thing. They saw nothing. I’ll bet you are right when you said the game commission will call it a banner year. I agree with you on your assessment of the season. The amount of shots I heard was very low. I can’t remember having a year like this. Then again I guess we’ll run into one every now and then. Last year our camp took three 8 points and I saw a good amount of big bucks taken.

The video will provide some color on the results of the Saturday opener as well as highlight some of the data that PAGC staff presented.

I thought they had to have atleast 3 points on one side ? It says it right in the hunting book you get with your license

Negative. "Statewide, junior license holders, mentored youth, disabled hunters with a permit to use a vehicle, and resident active duty U.S. Armed Services personnel, can harvest antlered deer with two or more points on one antler, or a spike three or more inches in length."

I did not know that. Either way a good hunter hunts for mature bucks. I understand when its your first one and you just want to get one but theirs no reason to hunt baby deer. Sorry if you find this offensive but it's true

@@Trolldaddy5 No worries! Understandable difference and expectations exist for sure in what most of us would call experienced hunters but sheesh, talk about a great way to recruit and retain young hunters... buck shaming them for taking their first deer??

I think most would say a experienced hunter is someone who hunts difficult animals that most cant. He likes the challenge. Not easy otherwise hed be average. And I'm not shaming him. Why didnt you take him somewhere to get a big one? A good sportsman/ hunter doesn't hunt fawns so why should it be any different with a baby spike buck. Let them live to reproduce and mature. People should be learning how to be patient and wait for and how to find the big bucks and to respect nature not to shoot the first deer they see. But everyone has this mentality and every year I see the pictures online and everywhere of people bragging about some little baby deer and theres no challenge it's so easy to shoot most deer. That buck was probably no more then 1 year old probably younger. Like I said I'm not trying to be offensive I just think its important to teach new hunters especially at a young age that it's not about shooting any deer you can. I just dont see the reason in it and I really hope you dont misunderstand my text or interpret it as being rude I'm just trying to learn and help others learn from the actions of others

Thanks John, he's still tickled to have his first buck. I don't think there's been a day go by where he hasn't been carrying those antlers around in the house.

Great video and congrats to your son. I hunted the first Saturday of doe out near Fallbrook and was shocked by the lack of shooting. My dad and two uncles were at camp for the opener and they had said the same about the lack of shooting for the first day as well. I know most of the Running Deer camp also headed home on Saturday due to the weather, there were only 4 or 5 in camp after the first day.
