Over 3 million people die annually from air pollution. Planting trees can help lower that number.

Trees help improve public health by cleaning and cooling the air around them. As the threat of climate change steadily increases, planting trees is a fairly simple way city leaders can help stem the negative consequences of rising temperatures and increasing population density.

To be honest I think trees are a great way to break up cities anyway. The endless concrete jungle can really feel depressing and it adds a bit of life to the city.

One solution is making rooftops greener: rooftops are spaces nobody uses anyways. And it doesn't have to be trees, you can use all sorts of plants really.

But you can, however, put a couple small plants on a balcony or next to your house, or talk to your landlord about planting some trees at the front of the building, where there's usually some dirt and grass. If you have a backyard, you can definitely plant trees there. It won't make a big change, but it'll at least improve the air around you somewhat.
@ruedelta
@ruedelta 7 лет назад
+Alex Stefanov Most city trees are planted under the concrete/pavement with a grate that lets water in. China has this down to a science and even today's technology is much worse than the technology from 1000 years ago. A flood hit Beijing a few years ago and wastewater engineers were really confused as to why certain places in Beijing were handling the floodwaters just fine while the sewage system was being overwhelmed. They found out that a long time ago city engineers had built this massive sewage system where the trees themselves were the inlets. Their roots filtered most sediment that made it in and the sewers themselves were meticulously designed to have stone shaped in angles that self-washed the sediment away. Even centuries later it was outperforming the most modern sewage systems out there. If you get creative with trees, you can do some really incredible things.

It isn't just the suburbs. Downtown Portland has tons and tons of large trees among apartment high rises and office towers. Probably at least 30% of the surface is covered in trees. Many buildings even have green roofs with gardens growing on top. We even have a 6,000 acre forest nature park (all wild native forest habitat, complete with hiking trails), bisecting the city straight through the middle of downtown. It is called Forest Park. We also have tons and tons of other smaller nature parks and reserves within the city boundary. I live in PDX in the suburbs, but travel downtown rather often. It is true that our cities and states are the best in the U.S.; both in scenery, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability. Our water is so clean, we don't even need to filter it. It comes straight from the mountains and into our faucets (passing through several reservoirs).

Nice Video, but the initial statement is just outright wrong, more people living in cities doesn't mean more cars, more factories and more pollution. The exact OPPOSITE is the case. People that live in cities have significatnly LOWER carbon footprints per person, drive less carmiles per person and use less energy per person than those living in rural areas with comparable standards of living. More people in general produce more smog and CO2, but people living in densely populated cities use much less energy and produce less smog than people living in widespread suburbs, with less energy density, bigger distances to cross by car and more sealed/destroyed natural landmass per person. Just think about this: Who uses more energy, drives more miles and uses up more natural space, 1000 people living in one single building, or a 1000 people in 500 buildings spread across several squarekilometers?

I get what you are trying to say but I do not see the point... the result is the same. Rural usage may produce more pollutants, but there are way more people in cities, so even if only a percentage had cars, that's still way more output than the rurals. Plus that output is all in one area.
@steelyspielbergo
@steelyspielbergo 7 лет назад
way to miss the point
@averagejoe3312
@averagejoe3312 7 лет назад
Very good point there. Due to public transportation being used more and people just taking a simple bike to where they go helps a lot of that. People who live outside the city, drives to the city for simple shopping and a day or night out for fun. They also have generally bigger malls and attractions for people. I was in Atlanta and couldn't believe anyone would want to live there because of all the smog in the air. So the point is, the more of the city, the more that people have a reason to go there. Even if that's because of bigger and better hospitals for treatment.
@Ornitorrincoso
@Ornitorrincoso 7 лет назад
Good point but I don't agree. People in rural areas has more trees per person than in cities. So that lower their carbon footprint. But in general, is a really complex system and depends on a lot of variables. Carbon is not the only thing that matters in health. My city for example has better air quality (there are lot of trees) than near rural areas that have really dangerous agrochemical pollution (nobody controls that issue here).

Zach Gerrity well its not exactly easy. You can't just throw a seed in a hole and expect it to grow. You'll need to take care of it day by day, it takes years to grow large plants like trees and you'll need large spaces as well especially spaces for the roots but since all the space is filled with buildings (most likely important ones) it'll be hard to destroy it or even destroy a part of it. You'll also need to have water but not all countries has access to water not even safe/clean water. Certain plants wont grow in certain places and even if they've found a plant that would be able to grow there the circumstances, area/habitat should be benefiting to the tree so it can prosper and flourish

My neighborhood was build on the edge of a national forest, and most of the forest comes into my backyard. It's a wonderful sight and being able to step outside into fresh air is wonderful. I do hope more major cities take to planting trees and foliage around. It would improve the life of its inhabitants (human and animal) so much more.
@taqu
@taqu 7 лет назад
This is such an all-around good and somewhat obvious solution. In Finland, even the bigger cities and towns have trees planted all around, with large parks and forests nearby. It's beautiful, gives the city a unique look during each season and most importantly, helps with pollution and oxygen. I know it's not so easy to do in some parts of the world, but whenever planning or expanding cities, the greenery should be a major part of the consideration from the start.
@leesweehuat

*Reducing Urban Heat In A City* 2 simple, fundamental, effective and cheap long term solutions for reducing urban heat in a city: 1) Plant more trees near areas where there are running water in streams, canals or rivers 2) Create more running waters in streams near areas there are more trees. Notes: 1) Other vegetation do not result in as much water evaporation as water evaporation by trees 2) Trees not near running water or streams may not have enough water for water evaporation to effectively reduce ambient heat in the environment or to reduce urban heat 3) Most current air-con systems are very wasteful as they merely transfer indoor heat to outdoor, resulting in increase in the ambient temperature in the environment or increase in urban heat.

This is why I miss my home city of Novi Sad in Serbia... so many parks and tree-lined streets. You can walk everywhere. The city is 15 minutes away from a beautiful, very fertile mountain full of fruit orchards, so during the season there is always super-fresh organic produce you can buy at local markets. I miss it so much...

I love trees. The one thing this report didn't talk about is the damage caused by tree roots though. This video convinently left out this part of the study "It concluded that while trees should not replace other strategies to make air healthier, they can be used as part of a suite of interventions that aims to control particulate matter pollution as well as mitigate against rising temperatures in cities." I'll always support more trees though.

Trees might be cost-effective but they dont give quick returns. It takes years fo them to be fully functional. So they cant be the only solution. Govt.s only take action when not taking an action will cost them their power.. and so they look for quick solutions whose results are visible to quickly pacify the growing unrest in public.

It's quite cheap actually to buy and plant grown saplings from tree farms that take much less time to mature. In fact since cities tend to be hostile environments for developing plants this is precisely what they do.

Well, according to MIT the Paris accord is only going to reduce global temperatures by 0.2 degrees by 2100 if all member nations meet their obligations news.mit.edu/2017/mit-issues-statement-research-paris-agreement-0602 So planting trees is actually a lot quicker. I will at least get to see a tree grow to maturity in my life time as I won't be alive by 2100 to see that meager drop in temperature.

Good job VOX. (Plants inside the house also perform a similar function.) Picking the right place and the right tree matters. For example don't copy Seoul in SK. They planted thousands of Ginko trees, because they were beautiful in the fall coating the sidewalks with yellow leaves, BUT without realizing that the trees also smell terrible and the sidewalk cleanup is a horrendous problem. Urban planners should use effective but very low maintenance trees that don't smell, clog sewer lines or attract biting insects. Biking, walking, and good public transportation also lowers pollution levels.
@NatureShy
@NatureShy 7 лет назад
Ginkgo Trees are often chosen for their high tolerance for polluted air. They are often well suited for large cities. Of course, like you said, there are disadvantages too.

If every city did this or atleast the ones in the US India and china the cities would look far nicer and global warming would not be a problem for atleast another 200 years at which point you would have to replant the trees most likely and also cover new areas that have been added to the city with trees. Also I wouldn't have developed asthma in the first place
