Ultramarathons are races ranging from 50 to 4,345 km. During races, the most common problems for runners are nausea and vomiting. Some runners may get blurry vision. Sleepiness and hallucinations are problems in longer races lasting more than 24 hours.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Ultramarathons are a growing sport in the US and globally. In these grueling tests of human endurance, your body can go through a lot of stress. Following is a transcript of the video.
In 2018, more than 108-thousand people finished ultramarathons in the US alone. An ultramarathon is any race longer than 42 kilometers. Races can range anywhere from 50 to over 4,000 kilometers. But one of the more common lengths covers about 100 kilometers and takes, on average, 17 hours to finish.
In some of the longer races, half of the runners never see the finish line. Because these races not only push you to your mental limit they take a toll on your body both inside and out.
Ultra runners endure pretty extreme conditions. The Badwater Ultramarathon, for example, covers over 4,000 meters of elevation through Death Valley, in July, one of the hottest months of the year. Temperatures reach up to 47 degrees Celsius, causing headaches and dizziness in many runners.
But even if you’re running in more comfortable weather, you could be feeling sick to your stomach. One of the most common issues in any ultramarathon is nausea and/or vomiting. It affects about 37% of people who complete a race, but it’s also the number one reason runners won’t finish in the first place.
That’s because running disrupts your digestion. It diverts blood away from your stomach to your muscles. And since ultramarathons last so long, many races provide sandwiches, pasta, and other carb-loaded meals. As a result, that food will sit around undigested, causing problems. But if your stomach isn’t slowing you down, your eyes could be causing you grief.
Windy conditions can dry out or damage the cells that pump a protective liquid layer over your cornea, which can cause your cornea to swell up and blur your vision. During the Hellgate 100K for example, runners report losing most of their vision by the end. They call it “Hellgate Eyes.”
But no amount of protection or preparation can prevent one symptom: Sleepiness. For a 17-hour race, it might not be so bad. But longer races can stretch to more than 24 hours, which can make sleepy runners more prone to trips and falls or worse, hallucinations.
The Barkley Marathons, for example, is a race where runners are given 60 hours to finish 161 km. In 2005, one runner reported that he thought he saw houses at the top of the mountain and believed he was their garbageman sent to pick up the trash.
Despite all these health hazards, ultrarunning is a growing sport. One study found that compared to marathoners, ultrarunners are more likely to do it for nature and a sense of purpose than for the competitive aspect. So if you’re up for the challenge, plenty of races are on trails through natural areas, so at least you’ll get a great view!

I run a lot, and I’ve even ran a pretty quick marathon. But when I finished that marathon I said “man I don’t think I’ll ever try running farther than this” when my legs almost gave out in exhaustion.. honestly that’s because ultra running is a whole different type of sport, it’s not about speed it’s just about survival

I personally really enjoy ultras. I'm a mid pack runner at best, so the effort level is always pretty low with lots of walking when going uphill. I've ran five or six ultras now, including one last week, up to fifty miles. Unlike a 5k or 10k, which is basically a full on sprint until you finish, an ultra requires being smart, pacing yourself, and being cognizant of your food/water intake. Short of that, it'll hurt some towards the end, but it's an almost transcendental experience each time. You're capable of way more than you might think.

That's strange, I've finished somewhere between 10-15 ultras, and I have many friends in the community. Yet I've only ever heard of a few isolated incidents of vomiting and nausea. Never experienced it myself. Would be good to see what kind of ultra runner survey is behind that data, what was their sample. In any case, it's important to note that the races mentioned here are some of the toughest in the world (e.g. Badwater and Barkley). One does not simply go there without many years of experience and gradually more tougher ultras races behind one's belt. Also, like someone else mentioned in the comments, the key ingredients to a good ultra experience are: 1) proper pacing (i.e. knowing your pace, not going too fast, never pushing yourself too hard), 2) fueling (eating things your body can digest easily, such as bananas, sports bars, sports gels, sports drinks and similar - I mean wtf was that about pasta, food like that is only ever served after the race), 3) hydration (knowing approx. how much you sweat per an hour when running, and therefore running with a backpack which will usually hold anywhere from 0.7L, for the world's top ultra athletes, to 2L of water or sports drink, for people like me, in special reservoirs). And as for sleepiness - realistically, no-one really has to start worrying about that until they are doing races which come close to 24h in length.

A 50k ultramarathon on trails is easier on the body than a road marathon. Different angles, different muscles used, varied impacts, more forgiving terrain and therefore impacts on the joints. Takes a bit of practice running on trails but as for the distance, you could for sure do an ultra if you can do a marathon. I'm running a road marathon tomorrow to qualify for an ultra, and I'm more scared for my knees tomorrow than I am for the 100k in February!
@alwaysuseless
@alwaysuseless 3 года назад
@@johnnewman7663 Agree with everything you just said (well, a year ago). I hope you stop running on pavement. Trail runs are not only easier on your body, but they're also more scenic and more fun.

@johnnewman7663 3 года назад
@@alwaysuseless I needed that road marathon to qualify for a trail ultra. I do as much running as I can on trails. Since I wrote that a year ago I've taken a shining to exploration also - linking up big geographical features off-track and working out scrambles to get to places for the views, etc. I feel so lucky to have chanced upon the hobby! Got a 100-mile trail ultra in April which I'm super-psyched for up and down the Victorian Alps :)
@alwaysuseless
@alwaysuseless 3 года назад
@@johnnewman7663 Up and down the Victorian Alps sounds like fun. Your April is roughly equivalent to our October in the U.S. Fortunately, your alps are "only" 6,500 ft. :-) Do your runs and scrambles include backpacking (overnight camping)? I'm into ultralight backpacking and long runs, but I've never combined them. I don't think I'd like running with 15 or 20 pounds on my back. I want to do the Western States (100 miles), but that's a crap shoot to get in, even with a qualifying 100-K.
@johnnewman7663
@johnnewman7663 3 года назад
@@alwaysuseless Yes the peaks are modest compared to US/Europe, but there is 25,000ft of elevation over the course so it's relentless by Australian standards. I haven't done a multi-day run with ultra-light gear yet but I'm keen. I have done that style - camping at a base and doing a long run each day as a holiday. Tried a 50K, mountain then 50K the next day as a way of experiencing a new area. Very satisfying! Good luck with Western States! Like everyone else I'd love to do that race - but there are so many stunning areas in the US, you won't have to do much research to find another course that floats your boat. I'm interested in Ouray 100, No Business 100, and in South Africa Mac Pac 100, and the new UTMB race in the Pyranese... if only I were super rich with no responsibilities :)

I personally have done an ultramarathon, with the longest distance I have gone being 30 miles. I totally agree with what this video has to say on how your body is affected physically. Even though that’s only 4 miles more than a marathon, my body felt like glass and when I had to sidestep out do the way for a bike towards the end that was enough to make me come to a dead stop cramp. Our bodies were not physically designed to run that far, but I can understand the wanting to fulfill purpose as that was my intention of finishing it in the past. I ran 30 miles yesterday. Nothing happened to my body. Oh and by the way, technically anything over marathon distance is an ultra. So, 43km is arguably one. You don't have to run Badwater to be an ultramarathoner.

How many days do you take to complete 4,345 km run?? How do you do the run, continuosly without a break or with intervals in between?? Is it an individual race or a passing baton relay??

That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going.

Not all ultras are trail marathons. Some tend to be just timed races that run consistent loops for 12,24,48,72+ hours. There’s a bit of a science to fuel intake during different ultras but not all are specifically brutal in terms of heat and elevation gain. They all have a unique challenge to it which is what keeps it interesting. I implore you to check out the results from the 24 hour world championships this past weekend in Albi, France!

I did CCC in 108km around mont blanc last 2017 it was one of the worst weather for the race’s history. After descending Grand col ferret and reaching Champex lac around 70k into the race, my eyesight went all white. I had to stay inside the station for 3 hrs until my vision got a bit better which costed me my buffer time, good thing I was still able to finish the race. No food intake after 50km

Ive run only 3 short ultras a 48k,50k and 60k the longest taking about 7 hours so havent got to the delusional stage yet Another running mate of mine has done a few longer runs up to around 160k but his most challenging was a mountain run 76k but was over 10k of elevation gain He didnt make it to the last check point and missed the cut off for finishing by 15 minutes I wasnt there at the time but he later told me that when he got his DNF and no finishers medal he sat down in a cold water stream for about 10 mins and cried The following year he did the same event again and made it in time He wants me to go with him next year to do it Ill let you guess my response 🤔😂

No, digestive system slows down but never stops, especially on such slow paced ultra vs high paced road marathon. Feeding simple carb and sugar are the way to go. My personal favorite is Coke - sugar, hydration, and caffeine. Who says sleepy? If you are a competitive runner, you do not get sleepy.

I actually just started trail running this year. Right now I only run a distance of 10-15k, which I'm being honest, if I run even longer or further it just becomes a logistical nightmare. I think anything that takes longer than 2 hours is just too much. I may look at doing a half and full marathons at some point, but never anything more than that.

@empyrionin

After running 10-15k i ran 25k no problem. You can run a semimarathon in about 2 hours while still being an amateur runner. I was even overweight when I started. You think it's a lot, but actually your body can do a lot more than you think if you train it (doesn't even have to be crazy training, just periodic). The biggest barrier is mental, you think it's gonna be 100% harder because you double the distance, but it's really not like that!

Great documentaries out there on The Barkley. Much longer than 100 miles. It changes and gets longer every time someone finished the race (only like 17 people have in 30 years) but he never changes the description. Also, something like 2 climbs of everest in total elevation gain.

So close!!! Did you eat and drink, and do you think you might have kept going if you'd started slower? I wanted to pull out of my first marathon at the 26k mark when my knees got upset, but I had accepted too many donations to quit, so I hobbled to the end, feeling sorry for myself. After some better training and preparation I enjoy longer distances now, especially on trails. Maybe you could have another go, maybe a trail 50k? 42k whacking your knees on the hard road is brutal for the body!
