@juniorjohnson9509
@juniorjohnson9509 Год назад
If it is bitter, it is because the beans were not roasted correctly or were too old, or were really poor quality to start with. Good quality beans, roasted correctly, are very delicious, and you can actually tell the difference from one bean orchard to another. Places like Starbucks and most brands like Folgers use medium to poor quality beans ( with Starbucks using the worst they can find, and then actually burn them purposely to keep the taste consistent). Also, very high quality beans will not have oil floating on the top after brewing - oily beans are rejected by the roaster.
@dochubbell
@dochubbell Год назад
@@juniorjohnson9509 Good information to know. I have heard about bitterness caused by old beans. My guess is that most ground coffee you get is probably old and cheaply processed/harvested.
@juniorjohnson9509
@juniorjohnson9509 Год назад
@@dochubbell My oldest sister is very allergic to the oils from coffee beans. She is lucky that where she lives there is a very high end coffee bean shop that she can get her roasted beans from ( they will roast to her specifications), so over her first years living there she was able to try all sorts of beans from various orchards and at different levels of roasting. What she ended up with - 6 different orchards and roasting - is absolutely delicious! Zero bitterness and zero oils. Thankfully, she can afford these blends! I, on the other hand, buy Great Value Classic Dark Roast at Wallymart, and mix in a heaping tablespoon of hot chocolate mix! 😄😄
@dochubbell
@dochubbell Год назад
@@juniorjohnson9509 JJ, Glad you sis found a solution. I like the idea of mixing a bit of hot chocolate mix in the ground coffee. Will have to try it. Do you mean heaping Tbsp, in a cup of poured coffee, or a Tbsp, in the grounds before brewing? Is that a tablespoon in the whole can of coffee, or just in the brewing filter basket?
@juniorjohnson9509
@juniorjohnson9509 Год назад
@@dochubbell Put the hot chocolate mix into the already brewed coffee in your cup! If you put it in the brewer, all it will do is plug up the paper filter! Don't ask me how I know.... 🤣 My "cup" of coffee is more than a measured cup - probably closer to a cup and a quarter or a cup and a half. I use a heaping tablespoon of the mix simply because I like the flavor. The mix I use is the Great Value hot chocolate mix, again from Wallymart. I've also used the Nestle mix when the other wasn't available, and a couple times the mix that has tiny marshmallows in it when nothing else was available. Hot chocolate mixes also contain powdered milk and a bit of sugar to help sweeten the chocolate. You could try using some Nestle chocolate syrup by itself, but it may be too strong a flavor and a bit more bitter since it doesn't contain as much sugar as the mix (I think, anyway!). I still like high quality real black coffee, and expresso on occasion. Coffee with chocolate in it is called "mocha".

It's ironic that it's called "American Coffee" because except for that which is grown in Hawaii, most coffee comes from somewhere else. Our personal family favorite is actually Colombian. And a little sugar and milk (or "milk powder") goes a long way in decreasing the bitterness.

When I was very young, my Dad would give me what he called "coffee milk" when he had his coffee and we'd drink it together. Of course mine had a LOT of milk AND sugar. But to me it was coffee just like Daddys! When I got older i used less sugar, and a Lot less milk, but I still drink my coffee with Milk and sugar. I agree with Most of the people on here - they have to try it with milk and sugar. I'm 66 now, and still drink it with milk and sugar, so it's NOT just for little ones! I LOVE my TPT Families!❤

The same bitterness that is in coffee is also in chocolate so if you hate coffee you won't like chocolate much either coffee needs creamer or milk and sugar in order to kill the bitterness a bit but to my defense coffee is meant to be bitter it keeps us up during a busy work and or study week.

I used to teach classes on coffee, tea and wine. Bitterness in coffee can be avoided by not over brewing and/or not using water that is to hot. I brew my coffee at about 195 °F or even lower. After the grounds are filtered away the coffee can be heated until it reaches boiling with bitterness. I ways serve coffee very hot like this. When the result of brewing is so smooth and rich and not steaming hot people will guzzle it down before you can pour some for yourself.
