You've got 2 weeks between DC and Berlin, add a date in NC on the 24th or something, just for me! I'm not selfish at all, nope, I'm clearly saying this for the greater good! 😉
Oh how I wish you had a Tucson date - the Rialto would be a great gig, University of Arizona just a hop skip jump away… artist/creative community, blue island in a swamp of red.
I love the intros and outros being live every time! Compared to other channels it's fantastic and unique. And he does it slightly differently every time, reflecting his mood, emotion, and occasionally a mistake or a flourish.
I think it's a great sub-topic to the autotune issue. Miley is one of those singers who might have lost range and clarity, but her voice has gained so much character and personality by now being more 'imperfect'. There's so much more humanity to the sound of a voice that isn't pristine.
Her Jolene cover off of her backyard sessions was a turning point for me. I seriously did not know she had that in her. Then the collab with Billy Idol and everything that came after. She is a force to be reckoned with.
I've been sitting here like "why hasn't she made a rock album yet?" Or just a cover album I'd be happy with. I don't think she's made for pop, she's made for rock honestly 😭
Thank you for this Justin. I had a vocal injury for 10 years - a cyst on my vocal cords, that was difficult to spot/diagnose. Manifested in me losing my voice every other day, and it often hurting to speak. It was an incredibly isolating, upsetting chapter of my life. Especially as an aspiring actor. Now 3 years post surgery and speech therapy, healthy and recovered voice - I never take it for granted!
Its really interesting to hear someone say "I think people should experiment". Noone actually ever says it but i kind of agree. I definately agree her voice sounds better now.
I think Miley comes across really well for a kid that's lived her entire life under a lens. Her music isn't my bag but she's unquestionably got a fantastic voice. Fair play to the lass, I hope she keeps killing it.
I really love how she's developed to be unapologetically herself, her persona is waaay more interesting now than the shiny shiny popstar she started as.
I love when Justin sings the theme song fresh every day. You just never know what he’s gonna do or what will happen. Recorded just wouldn’t be the same. Really good points. Miley learned to embrace the changes in her voice. She sadly did a lot of damage to her voice unknowingly, but she sounds just as effing amazing - she’s just deeper now. I like to call that the sexy voice. I had polyps on my vocal chords as a child that went away in their own, but I had a super deep voice according to my mom. As a teen, I had asymptomatic GERD that burned a hole in my vocal chords. I sounded like a man for months and had to rest my speaking voice. I also had a sexy voice for around 10 months that very slowly healed with medication, dietary changes, and sleeping with an angled wedge so I wasn’t flat. I always worry when I see singers who smoke, don’t rest their voice and body after a gig. I always wonder when it will catch up with them. Maybe Mylie’s experience will inspire Justin, and any of his fellow pro musicians who may be watching, to do as much as possible to take care of their vocal chords and bodies so we will enjoy their instrument for many more years to come. Look how many brilliant singers have lost their iconic voices after facing medical issues and/or the effects aging. Caring for yourself gives you the best chances of not being one of those people who lose their identities. The same way a guitarist (or their tech lol) maintains their guitar with daily wipe down, using a protective case, occasionally swapping strings, and making repairs as needed, singers gotta do what it takes to maintain the voices they rely on for income . . . and we adore. It’s worth consulting with vocal doctors and therapists every now and then to learn about your specific voice, check for any minor damage before it gets worse, and above all, heeding their expert advice. Thanks Justin! ❤❤❤
Love your channel, always brings joy. Keep doing the intro live, it adds so much character. Maybe create a compilation of them one day, like a time lapse
Justin, I think you and Miley could write a fantastic rock song together. I'm sure she knows of and loves The Darkness. She had Stevie Nicks, Billy Idol, and Joan Jett all featured on one album, three different songs. Who the hell else in the "pop" world is doing awesome shit like that? Make it happen! You rock!
I agree about her voice being more interesting now. I've been loving the rock covers she's done recently. Her husky voice suits the rock genre so well. I've always had a ton of respect for her, but I've enjoyed seeing her come out from behind the pop facade more in recent years. If anyone doubts her chops, they should check out her performance of "Say Hello to Heaven" at the Chris Cornell tribute show. You can tell the audience is skeptical when she comes out. But by the end, they're completely won over. Even on a poor handheld video filmed from the side of the stage, it'll give you chills.
I really like when you sing the introduction each time, and how it changes depending on how you're feeling. It's part of the fun! I really wasn't an early fan of Miley's, but the more she (and her voice) matures, the more I absolutely love her. I'm a huge, HUGE fan of the 'smokey' type voices, like Tracey Thorn from Everything But The Girl and Imogen Heap
Mileys' tribute to Chris Cornell Say hello to heaven was one of the best 4 minutes of music i ever heard. Liked her before, loved her ever since. She get better with every year that passes. Thanks Mr Hawkins.
I was in a terribly abusive family/relationship from my teens to my late twenties and it pains me to admit that it caused a lot of shouting matches between myself and those around me. It took me about a year and a half of singing every day for about 2-6 hours to regain the purity my voice once had. However, my voice sounds better than it ever has in my life and I actually find myself crying often because I thought I had lost it forever and I sound unlike I ever thought I could. The vocal cords are a beautifully resilient thing
@@chi_cedar14 thank you!! And it’s okay. Like I said, I’ve never been more proud of the sound of my voice. So if anything, it’s been a bizarre blessing that I can’t be too upset over now. I’m in a much better place ❤️
Yes. Same. I have tried to stop it but I haven't found a way yet. I've never fully forgiven my mother either who allowed herself to be gaslit into tolerating and perpetuating the abuse. 😢 it sucks friend. I hear you.
I really fell in love with Miley as a singer when she featured in the episode of Black Mirror "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" and covered NIN songs. Now I honestly just wish she would go way more grunge/metal, she suits it so well.
Almost feel like she was born a touch too late. I imagine her coming after the likes of Courtney Love and completely blowing us away. Pop is a safe place for her, but it really doesn't seem to truly use her talents.
Have you heard her cover of Zombie by the Cranberries? Stunning. It made we wonder where her voice comes from, so I decided to watch a couple of early Hannah Montana show - now halfway through season 2, not ashamed to say at 55 that it’s great fun, especially watching Billy Ray trying not to crack up at Jason Earle’s as Jackson
That new voice of Miley is perfect for rock songs. As Bonnie Tyler, she has now a very distinctive husky voice (despite in both cases is due to a procedure, but also emotions and lifestyle have a big influence as it's pointed in the episode...) Nice one! 👍 Edit: Not forgetting Marianne Faithfull...
I'm quite amused by these word salads of hers, she must just of been a really heavy smoker. Luckiky she can still sing, because that voice sounds rough
She always had a great voice but the thing that sticks in my mind was when she did Glastonbury in 2019 and covered Nothing Else Matters which was amazing. Then the pandemic happened and the next time I see her was that Howard Stern video with Metallica doing Nothing Else Matters again and after she sung the first line it was like 'Holy Shit.....'
I’ve completely changed my outlook on her and talents when I saw her sing Nothing Else Matters on the Stern show. You could see the power, emotion, and experience in that performance, and it really showed me how much I was missing out on. Her relatability and openness is charming and admirable. I wish to be with someone that open-minded with music someday, she’s a legend and she deserves it.
Justin, I'm a huge fan of your show. I love your honesty and the way you present the show. I dig your singing and your band too. By the way, greetings from Singapore. Cheers! I'm having my cup of coffee...
My son turns 21 tomorrow, and is going out with his friends…we have had many discussions about substance abuse already but today we make a plan to follow (and I’m giving it to his responsible girlfriend too). He is a string bean skinny kid, so I worry his friends might not take that into account as they buy him drinks. He knows about alcohol poisoning and is more of a stoner (mammas influence 😬) than drinker. Still, worried, but I know my kid is super brilliant and will listen to his body. We have the same birthday, so we are going to lunch together and will be having his first legal drink together- a Cosmo. (His name- after Cosmo di Medici) It will be a rare one for me, I have little tolerance for alcohol, it makes me feel crazy dehydrated so I rarely imbibe
I never liked Elton John's voice until 'live in Australia' it was shortly after his operation and it was rough and you could hear the struggle. That made it more relatable!
I work in opera and hear how amazingly the singers warm up their voices before singing. I'd love to hear about that 'after the show' voice training that they do. Bring it on! Also, I've always been astounded how heavily singers smoke! I know so many that chug down the ciggies and then belt out amazing tunes with that same instrument (their/your voice). It blows my mind. It feels couter-intuitive.
I completely agree with your take on smoking, insofar as it being counterintuitive. Although the voice certainly changes with age, it often immeasurably changes for those who smoke heavily. I'm actually surprised when guys like Justin can still hit those high notes!!!
Honestly Justin, you look so fun to smoke a cig with some coffee and chat with. You just remind me of the strangers I have long chats with when I travel, someone I wanna just have a deep talk about nothing yet everything at the same time. I always watch your videos while I smoke cause it feels like a friend chatting with me.
Growing up we all think we’re indestructible, until we realise we’re not. Hopefully that realisation comes before either the damage is irreversible, or our choices kill us. I happen to know that sometimes it’s a f*king fine line.
I wasn’t a fan of hers until I saw her cover “Say Hello 2 Heaven” at the Cornell tribute concert. Amazing performance, she gained many fans that night.
I have recently started listening to your old albums again. You guys were ahead of your time. I love Permission to land, but I adore the second album. Dinner lady arms, Hazel eyes (looove it) , and that solo in English country garden is pure magic.
I love when you play your theme song, Justin, and the variations you put on at times, sometimes relating to the video, and your expressions, all if it -- you are brilliant and creative and love your attitude...
Problem is she is only 30. Once she starts to age, that voice won't hold up. So shorter life span. No free lunch. When she's your age Justin, she has no hope of being able to sing her early songs as you can yours.
“Fucks up her voice” But in-fact made it stand out from the generic plain vocals of mainstream music and allowed her to pursue rock and absolutely killing it.
10:50 I love what she says here. I actually agree. Personally, I was addicted to drugs from 18 to 30 years old. Started a band in my late teens with a new friend, and we partied and made some of our best songs then. Literally sitting with one guitar each for 24 hours and writing and playing. It ofc went to heavier stuff. But I’m happy to say we are both clean today. Most people say to me: omg you f***ed up, you must regret that so much. But I tell them, absolutely not! It was the best time of my life. We made music, wrote songs. And I learned so much from that whole experience. I’m convinced I’m stronger and smarter today because of all that.
I think she isn't advocating getting hooked on but experimenting. That to me means two different things..it indicates knowing when you are getting past experimenting and into different terriitory
Frankly, I was totally disinterested in her singing until I heard her sing with Metallica…after her voice changed. She’s now got a great ROCK voice instead of pop. I hope she can go on to give us some great rock music.
Please, interview Richard 4tus from GNR, he is such a guitar god, versatile and geek about equipos and innovations in the industry. Also he has played with so many great artists, might be full of stories to share ! Please, 4tus on the show!
Everybody's voice change by the time, not only because the life style, but the effect to growing old. But in my opinion the most of singers get better the way to sing in spite of the voice evolution, because you earn better style or better techniques. It's what in Spanish call "tablas", the translation to English is "board"...i honestly don't know the reasoning to use this expression. In fact there are singers who keep doing great performances even thought they are older or have had a hard lifestyle. Justin, i think that you must have a strong personality if you got to separate the rock star persona of the Justin Hawkins person in order to get a healthy lifestyle. And to tell us, because you are an awsome rocker on the stage but you haven't to die in it. I applaud to you when you talk in this terms. I like very much the Justin Hawkins person who you show us by this little window which is your channel. I love drinking beer, but i try to do it only once in the week end, and every time i stand up less drinking alcohol... Caring of ourselves is good, and i like people who promote it. Like u. I don't want to you think that i tell compliment by tell them... I think it from the heart. Go on being the way you are now.
The thing with the `everyone should experiment` is that you get people like me (and you too Justin) Those that have no control over that experimentation, which soon goes from rare experiences into common experiences into addiction at a VERY rapid rate! Then if you are dedicated to that then before you know it youve lost decades of your life, decades in prison or decades off your life!
I agree. I was one of the lucky ones that spent my late teens and 20's partying and experimenting and dropped it just before my 30's. I did enough partying to last a lifetime and goddamn I had some fun and never regretted a single minute but I'm very happy to never go to another rave or have any substances ever again. It's not until you sober up you realise not everyone is as lucky and can't choose to sober up before it's too late. It feels very much a lottery.
Miley is amazing and highly underrated. Have thought that since "The Climb" days. Loved her cover of Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" that she did on SNL anniversary show a while back. As far as recording the theme tune, good idea. But it won't be the same without you struggling to get your guitar in the stand after...unless you would like to record the sound of that too. lol!
I do have to say, I was never a fan of her music for a long time. But, she has been gradually pulling out more authenticity in her albums and it's totally reflective of the wisdom she's gained over the years. Her interviews have been really awesome lately because she brings a kind of relieving honesty.
She's an incredible performer. I highly, highly recommend checking out her live cover of Blondie's Heart of Glass. The rock spin on it was brilliant. Her intense voice, performance and killer attitude fit the lyrics perfectly.
Dear Justin, in French when you says "Adieu" to someone, it means that you don't expect to see them or talk to them again, or that you don't intend to...
If no one explaind it to her, which is surprising to hear, means she was a natural singer without proper training. Smoking, drinking, parties, lack of sleep, stress, allergy, lactose, too much coffee, red wine all of it affects vocal cords. Voice is an instrument like no other 💜
Gotta love her. She’s a little dynamo with a great voice and diversity. I admire her honesty. She’s Miley Cyrus, she has earned her validity in this arena. Use a recording? We fans would rebel against such nonsense. 😂❤
Totally agree, she sounds kinda interesting with that damaged voice (at least when singing, not so much a fan of her talking voice). A while back stumbled upon a performance she did on the Howard Stern show and it was really, really good. The studio stuff sounds a bit too polished for my taste but Live it's great, really enjoyable. And she's an absolute badass performer.
Miley is a LEGIT rock singer. I wish she would just embrace the reason why she sounds the way she does. It's to sing the type of stuff she should sing. If you've heard any of her less poppy stuff that she's sung then you know what I'm talking about. The woman CAN SING and she's naturally very rock and roll.
having reinkes edema was the hardest part I've gone thro vocally and mentally... mine came from over use, age and I had developed a hiatus hernia so the acid had free flow to my vocal cords... I (on the other side) did have the luxuary of being and ordinary unknown so I took time off, rearranged things in the music and gave myself time to heal.. yes the bank and bills suffered from it but all I kept thinking was "health first!"
I feel quite conflicted as I think I much prefer the tone of Miley's voice now. She really suits a rock style of singing, but of course she's put it through so much and as a result had surgery. But she's adapted her singing to her tone and I think it sounds fantastic.
This seemed to happen to all my favorite vocalists. Davey from AFI destroyed his voice and I believe has 3 surgeries but he's still out there in multiple bands giving it his all. He definitely sounds different but just the fact he's still able to sing is pretty awesome
