Merry Christmas, and honestly, if you could I'd want a monster of the week on one of the horus frames, from my limited understanding of lancer lore they have no real standardized model, and as such would be interesting template monsters. Honestly my two favorites so far are the embodiment of CASTIGATE, Manticore, who is a heavy lightning damage dps, that gets buffs from damaging itself and is the only frame I know of that's made to kamikaze, esentually the only mech made to deal double damage if the pilot decides to stay inside it while it intentually detonates itself, and secondly Pegasus, nicknamed the Shordinger's gun by at least one guy, they have a gun that does and doesn't exist that is literally copypastible from the scorce material, and a gun that seems to change it's stats every round. Sorry if wordy, I just got into lancer myself, but I love both template monsters and monsters that just sound fun to play and fight against.

Glad to have you back, hope you have good holidays. As for suggestions, I ran into a creature you may like - Fowyrn Oedran a.k.a. Ageless Hag a.k.a. Witch of the Years. They're hags who don't look like old crones because their appearance constantly changes from young to old and back. They are obsessed with time and studying it. Their main ability is to suck away youth from a creature, aging them up, which they can then bestow on another creature, aging them down. Oh and if creature dies from old age due to this, it freaking explodes!

Quite funny that you should mention it. In our current D&D campaign, we're facing both a freakishly ginormous False Hydra and a brand new Entoner. Kinda hoping our DM doesn't stumble on this video (quite likely) and decides to add Crypt Chanters to the lot, lmao. After all, they are a very good way to keep an Entoner's Opus Magnum remembered for eons and eons, as those who know and play it are immortal.

I saw a story about how a pc got truesight at some point in a campaign and looked around the party. the dm then informed all the pcs they saw 3 ghostly figures holding instruments. The music the dm always played for the party during sessions was explained as an in game troupe of bard ghosts that followed the party. That's what this reminds me of

@@NecromancyForKidswell depending on how many of these bard ghosts are around doing this, this could be a “normal” thing that happens to people in battle or the bard ghosts have additional abilities that causes people to forget them and there music unless they are playing.

A thought for scaling up the Crypt Chanter for higher tier parties. UNDEAD MOSH PIT! The crypt chanters are surrounded by mass of undead that cause two problems for the players. First, they are so packed together that they are considered difficult terrain, unless you spend a few actions clearing a path through them. Second, the types of undead change depending on how close you are to the main stage. The furthest are usually a batch of recently dead humanoids that are just swaying, ‘dancing’, and mumbling along with the music. The dead get progressively more decayed the closer and longer they are to the stage, with the closest being ethereal spirits that are one instrument away from joining the band. These layers can be more than just an easy layout for the DM, they could act as amplifiers for the Chanters. Progressively outwards, the Mosh Pit extends the range of the song, but the effect drops off the further you are from the main band. (This par I am just spitballing mechanics, so someone experienced may want to balance check) Maybe, for 30 feet out of the Chanter’s range, the song can still be heard due to the ghosts singing along, but the Wisdom save is lowered by 2, making it easier to resist. This progressively changes with each layer, dropping the range and decreasing the DC needed as you progressively get further, but when you move from one layer of influence to another, players have to reroll their save. This went longer than one of my normal spitballs. Let me know if someone else has more suggestions.

Imagine if a crypt chanter were to create some other crypt chanters, only to discover that one of them is *completely* tone-deaf and can't carry a tune to save its unlife. Just when a bunch of hapless victims are paralyzed and about to be life-drained, the amusical loser hits a painfully-jarring note that breaks the rhythm and sends everyone's hands covering their ears. Boss crypt chanter is left hollering, "Which one of you did that?!" at its backup musicians. 😆

This made me think of an encounter I had with my group in Call of Cthulhu: The players hear a haunting melody echo through the halls of an eldritch horror's home. Finding the source it's revealed to be a giant pipe organ taking up an entire wall of a hall-like room and at the end of each pipe is what looks to be a human head, perfectly preserved. Playing the organ causes the heads to "sing". Maybe you could do something similar with the Death Chanters... or better yet the Bard Lich controlling them has them recruiting fresh victims, who when they are transformed into Death Chanters are taken to this organ and mounted as part of it. And when the Organ is complete the Bard Lich will play its magnum opus.

I know a crypt chanter, and extension bard, entire THING is 'performance = music', but I can't help but fixate on the idea of a Chanter having some other artistically inclined variations. A dancer, a jester, a would-be performance artist like a juggler. Just a ghoulish, entrancing, corrupting kind of artist feeding their power to the world, something so powerful it transcends death. Undead are fun like that, and this one especially. They have an inherent fluidity with just how far you can stress test them into being something similar but still wildly unique without too much effort.

I like the idea of an undead boss monster having one or more of these guys locked away in rooms where pipes extend the range of the music that they play. This would make then very hard to get to and make them more dangerous.

Just random stupid Ideas: 1) The party accidentally sets a crypt chanter free. Maybe they encounter one in the crypts of an actual lich? If so, maybe they were a wandering Troubadour in life, who got imprisoned by the lich, because the Troubadours music was so bad. And now, they are bound to haunt those crypts, while being cursed to never find rest in this place, so even if defeated, they return. But then comes the PCs, defeat the lich, and now the crypt chanter is no longer bound to this place. 2) The party encounters a crypt chanter, that is bound to the Castle in which they were imprisoned during their lifetime, due to how bad they played, and now the party has to find a knightly Descendant of the crypt chanter to free them by singing a good song. 3) The party encounters an ancient crypt chanter, that wants to play a great concert, but is veeery old fashioned in its music taste, so they have to teach it more modern music and help them do a great concert, to free the crypt chanter (and all under its command) from this existence.

mayhaps read some books on the paizo campaign setting, especially anything with the entire undead kingdom run by a lich who got a undead goddess for his (uber unwilling) side piece before she managed to bail and now she is a good undead goddess whos entire thing is I BELIEVE womans rights and restoring power to the powerless. Geb, and because liches be like that. that is both his name, and the kingdoms. also its ordered into a heirarchal structure of undead intelligence where its law for humans to become mindless undead and they use them as a workforce to work fields to feed the entire world. cant attack a brutha if he feeds your army can u? also he has a d*ck measuring contest with a uber wizard nation just next door. but thats okay, theyre seperated by the magical fallout zone where magic doesnt work great that was created after the last war between Nex, the ruler of the uber wizard kingdom (which is also named Nex....), huge storms of magical energy that just do buck wild, roll on a table shiz are all over the place. and everyone has guns (wild west + post apocalyse with a fair chunk of "OH SH*T THATS A ARMY OF UNDEAD OKAY WHO SAID F GEB?" and dont forget the old magical alkatraz just off the shore with a gold dragon just chilling out. talking to his bros to find the worst of the worst and lock em up. this is. one continent. HALF of one continent.

Alternative quest: A Lich (or wizard or whatever) wants some mood music, and tasks a party with collecting Crypt Chanters to play for them. Maybe giving them access to artifacts that cast Silence as incentive. I would love you to make some monsters from Magic: The Gathering. My first suggestion is Baron Sengjr.

I had a party that list one of their favorite encounters and one of my own to remember that starred a crypt chanter from 3.5e. They go through a tomb and at the bottom there is a spectral figure suspended in air as they were sneaking and not yet alerted it. The rogue comes up as quietly as possible, take his ghost touch weapon, and uses it to separate the chanter from her flute. The Crypt Chanter wakes up absolutely pissed off and... cant attack. The original monster stat block in the Libris Mortis only had her flute attack in the book and later added her slam in errata. So the bard then proceeded to take this spectral flute and beatbox into it to mock the crypt chanter to death with her own weapon. That same bard later went on and used the flute in a concert performance with a bunch of undead.

I could easily see these ghostly creatures having some sort of weapon attack relating to their instrument; Like floutists can shoot a spectral poisonous dart out of it, or a harpist can have the strings of their instrument suddenly entangle a close by threat. And if we wanted to include more modern instruments, an electric guitarist can use his guitar as an axe of sound, or a diabolic DJ can send a spectral copy of his discs out to cut foes, like target homing malevolent frisbees.

I imagine that a particularly large horde of Crypt Chanters, like a city that was completely turned, would all play in perfect sync the same melody or song. The best way to counter such a large scale synchronization, however, would be Discord. So actions that create loud sounds or deal Thunder Damage would be particularly effective. Personally, I’d give Crypt Chanters a vulnerability to Thunder damage to reflect the weakening/interruption of their song.

Great after seeing Brooks from One piece, it had to give me a idea for a Crypt Chanter. There was a band of bards traveling around the country singing songs to smallest villages to the largest cities to lift their spirits. Their renown was well known and as such some kingdoms would pay a great sum to have them play at their ball but the band would refuse the sum simply because they want to just play music. One day when a king's messenger went to hire them as per usual, (bad guys) over heard the amount of gold was offered and saw it as a opportunity to get rich. On the night the band to travel to the king they were ambushed and slained. The Maestro of the band died with regret that he couldn't continue playing music and failed to play for the king. The regret as caused him to become the Crypt Chanter returning to the world with these thoughts. I'm in pain I'm sad I'm sad I'm in pain "I know, this song always makes me happy when I'm sad" and plays the usual song that raised the spirits of the town he visited, sadly it also raised the spirits of his troupe and now the crypt chanter begins his march towards the king unknowingly why but still glad that so many people want to join his caravan and play music with him.

DM'd a campaign through lvl 20 that at many points used sound-based monsters (because like our Dungeon Dad, I also think that sorta thing is heckin' cool). The Eldritch Knight with Warding Wind (which deafens creatures in the aura) broke many of those encounters wide open!

This and a monster you cover awhile back go perfectly together...a bonesinger and his Orchestra of crypt chanter are trying to compose a balad of Awaking....the bonesinger is a perfectionist and keeps adding more members to the Orchestra in hopes to find the song he so desperately needs

This creature would be PERFECT for Pointy Hat's Entoner. It's a Bard Lich who's Phylactary is actually the people whove heard its final song. The Entoner could be using Crypt Chanters to spread their song and force people into their control. Would be amazing for an evil traveling performance troup...

My character does that and is fey so is technically a monster I mean literally he gets his power as a warlock from an arch fey who is literally comprised of his deceased friends (a kilorean is a fey being born from the mass slaughter of fey, and the current character is one of the survivors) and he travels eirh his friend the giant spider and fights by calling on spirits and has dancing weapons and undead slaves yo do his bidding, it's all very friendship themed because the civilisation of fey that was killed was socialist so he has a strong sense of community (think of how it would look to neighboring lands for a medieval or earlier community to be socialist they would 100% get raided by the enemies of the fey

A bardic necromancer who needs to assemble an orchestra to turn himself into a lich. The song is the phylactery, as long as its played, he cannot be killed. After the ritual, without ending their song, the orchestra splits off. Some go to far corners of the world, lock themselves away in chambers underground that can only be accessed by the incorporeal, to act as "protected" parts of the phylactery and play eternally in their little cells. The rest go off in groups to nearby population centers. More gravechanters playing the song means more security for the lich.

Hmm... imagine an evil bard who wants to be a litch pulling off building a full undead orchestra. Then uses them to pull off a special ritual that not only makes them a litch, but binds their soul to the music being played, turning it into a sort of music elemental that is constantly on the move. Probably the hardest to kill litch ever.

Dungeon Dad seems to love these monsters that make more of themselves by killing and are potentially of apocalyptic threat. Crypt Chanter, Dream Vestige, False Hydra...I guess he's also a fan of the Zombie Apocalypse trope?

Something interesting from another system entirely (Particularly Exalted 3rd edition's "Hundred Devils Night Parade") but feels like a creature that could be fitting all around in different games and settings known as a "Gravehound" A canine that wishes to help the dead settle their affairs... and can take on the formerly living's mind and voice to seek restitution for various wrongs? Sounds like an interesting sort of encounter for RP or for a lower level party threat for those that may need to defend someone from them, or else maybe they slighted someone themselves and now one of these deathly hounds are seeking them out?

man i love this monster, it belongs to a unique class of monster, the "why isnt this on top of the world" class, primarily because of its membership to the "oh god.... one got away. here we go again" class, those konsters where ONE is as much of a problem as 20, not because there as powerful, but because one is just SO prone to BECOMING 20, or being some huge problem. where one can work towards being a force multiplier.

My (3.5) character accidentally got his charisma up to 32 (for 5e thats about a 30) so if i came across one i think i would directly combat it for attention, my character would drop the spell surpressing his charisma and start preforming (as a drag queen mind you) to keep mortals from looking away or hearing the song

...between that great sponsor delivery and the Byte-Size campaign, I'm now 200% convinced I should put a couple of levels into technomancer 👍🏼 As a musician, I'm always a sucker for musically-inclined monsters and this one doesn't disappoint. I feel like I'd want them to be a little more powerful in that they have some kind of effect on the environment as they play (e.g. trees wither and eventually turn necrotic). Another avenue would be to make different creature types of the same monster, like a demonic band that opens up demonic possession portals in listeners' brains. That concept would fit in a world in which music is a metaphysical concept...🤔...time to jot down some campaign notes... Thanks, Dad 🫡 Happy holidays!

I am definitely going to use the crypt chanters main ability as a magic weapon for an antagonistic bard npc, make it the Diavolo Finavarii violin, the party could keep the weapon if they steal it, but it would still affect all their teammates, maybe making the instrument player themselves immune though.

This video unearthed a long buried memory of there being an undead mind-controlling ska band in an episode of Scooby doo and I think there was also a band battle? Anyway, this was such a fun creature! I'd also like to suggest the Myrmyxicus demon from 3rd edition, it's pretty weird looking.

Given its primary ability, I wonder if the crypt chanter was inspired by the Dancing Plague of 1518. Regardless what a cool monster, could be a great villain of the week in either of my modern day campaigns: orchestra members going missing thanks to one haunting the lincoln center in new york or one of the Silverquill or Prismari buildings...

I always enjoy learning more about obscure monsters, I then go on to share insane ideas with my DM. He's currently running a campaign with a false hydra and I just play along freaking everyone out.
