QUESTION from a Patreon Subscriber:
"Howdy Rex, Went to the range today, it was pouring down raining and wanted to get your take on a few things. I was severely under prepared for the rain, having accounted for the cold but not getting wet. Still, my rifle system performed pretty damn well and I was stoked (and soaked) when I left. Besides the mental aspect of the cold wet weather, I also experienced or perceived an increase in pressure due to the moisture in my chamber. Have you ever experienced this or trained to mitigate it? I had a definable audible difference and report on several firings, I chalked it up to the visible moisture in my chamber as this surplus ammo has been pretty consistent and my bolt closed easily. Every so often I even titled my barrel fwd, but I’m sure if it was that bad I would’ve know in a hurry! Other than that, No fog in my optics (SWFA), I sat on my laminated tax stamp so my Fanny wasn’t wet and felt pretty damn good about my groups! Thanks for all you do! Best, Mike.100y, 43 degrees and raining. No value 15mph wind but it made the rain miserable, .308 Win Ruger American Predator, M188 LR
Reply from TiborasaurusRex on Patreon:
"Yessir. Water expands 1,600x when it turns to steam. Even a little moisture in a hot chamber can steam while firing reducing volume in chamber for cartridge to sit, this will increase pressure. I have some tricks I learned from snipers in Europe, I'll shoot a video for you and post it ASAP."

Used to shoot locL groundhog matches here in PA with .243 in factory hb. Was at a match on a Tuesday morn and it was drizzling and I took an outside (not covered) bench. My load for my rifle was sound and repeatable,at least it was until that damp dreary day. So I proceeded to shoot first relay. Right away I noticed poi shift and pressure as noticed by the target and primer flattened. Talked with a few br shooters who have been in the game a long time, and in short water or traces there of has nowhere to go once cartridge goes off. Lesson learned. Keep everything dry as possible.

Reminds me of a discussion from Hatcher's notebook about the application of grease to the match cartridges at camp Perry with the move towards a cupro-nickel jacket was cold welding the casing to the bullet, and the introduction of grease would dangerously increase pressures.
@boknow5506
@boknow5506 Год назад
Yes to much grease causes dieseling and it doesn't take much so only very little is ok but yes if you over do it it will increase pressure
@highdesertdrew1844
@highdesertdrew1844 Год назад
@@boknow5506 Hatcher's conclusion, was the grease near the neck prevented proper expansion that would break the cold-weld, and the grease on the cartridge case greatly increased bolt force. This event blew up several rifles using the 1921 NM (tin can) ammunition. I don't think dieseling is a significant concern in an environment without an excess of oxygen, and even then, most of the gun system doesn't get that hot, there's just too much mass absorbing the heat of firing. Maybe an issue in machineguns.
@boknow5506
@boknow5506 Год назад
@@highdesertdrew1844 well older barrels wasn't made for pressures today and in higher caliber like beyond 308 the pressure is increased and depending on caliber and powder and pressure today's barrels are made to withstand greater pressure so hand made loads can be spicy but yes to much grease in the barrel will increase pressure and as far as grease the round itself I don't think that will cause more pressure but I'm guessing on that I don't know the answer but barrels today are made better than older ways and metals and forging is better in today's barrels

I always wondered about why when it rains the projectile isn’t effected. It’s because of the pressure in front of the bullet. Cool good question
@wilfdarr
@wilfdarr Год назад
It's counter intuitive, but you can't see through rain drops, so if you can see the target, there's actually no rain between you and the parts of the target you can see: If you can see it well, there's not a significant number of drops between you and the target at any given time, and thus the chances of a bullet actually impacting a single drop of water are very low. If you do, it will significantly alter the trajectory of the bullet, similar to hitting a grass stem, but the chances of that are very low, somewhere around one in one thousand in moderate rain.

Rex Knows his stuff... Fun Fact: Expansion rate when water transfers into a gaseous state 1:1700 Expansion rate of Nitroglycerin doing the same 1:1200 Water turning to steam inside your chamber/barrel is basically the same as little tiny droplets of nitroglycerin going off.
@woodrowcall3158
@woodrowcall3158 Год назад
Is the expansion speed the same?
@drd1924
@drd1924 Год назад
@@woodrowcall3158 This is a great question. although there are too many factors to calculate regarding water to steam to give a direct comparison such as in Meters/ Sec, being that water/steam is dependent upon temperature, pressure, surface area of the medium heating the water, suface area of any surrounding medium to then instantly pull heat away etc.(such as is the environment allowing the steam to continue expanding or condense it back to water) - Compared to an explosive where a shock wave sets off the whole volume A very rough number would be approx .02 ounces /per square inch /per second at 212F. Now if we heat a square millimeter of surface area to say 1000F it may convert the same .02 ounces of water to steam in 1 second within a smaller area doing more damage in a confined centralized location. If anyone else can answer this better...or come up with a meters per second expansion rate please do :)

Thanks for this!.... I always try my best to keep water from getting inside my action, barrel, and definitely my chamber. I was always curious about the projectile being affected by the droplets of rain. It has made me wary of taking 500+ yard shots at game if the opportunity ever presented itself. Learned some valuable information here. My question is what do anyone of you recommend to seal the primers, and the projectile during the loading process? I've used very small amounts of fingernail polish, but I have never shot anymore than a 3 round group before running a bore snake. Just cautious of any build up but it seems to burn off. Any better ideas??

Made me think about some Iraqi 7.62 x 39 I bought BEFORE the Gulf War (1989?). It was imported by Federal Ordinance, and came in compact 1000 rd. cardboard cases, I believe 40 rds. per box... I think I paid $80 for them, and STILL have some left. Brass-cased, non-corrosive (supposedly, but who would trust Saddam? : ), and the PRIMERS looked like they were sealed with RED LIPSTICK... some had NO sealer, some had the entire base of the case COVERED with it, and the rest were everywhere in-between : ) Overall, the worst/least accurate 7.62 x 39 I've seen, but they still go BANG every time, though...

So, hydrocavitation would occur on the first shot but the following shots should have less and less right? Of course if you're shooting in a downpour in the open you're going to have issues on every shot.
@wilfdarr
@wilfdarr Год назад
Honestly, you shouldn't see any the second shot: the gasses are hot enough to vaporize metal so there won't be any moisture after the first shot unless you are in a super cold climate and some moisture condenses after the shot. But the barrel would have to be cold soaked in some ungodly cold weather for that to be an issue!

If there is water in the chamber there is water in the bore, water is heavy, and is moved from the bore at an accelerated rate. Droplets are one threat, a filled bore is another. Either way there are items to contend with. How much deformation of the projectile, how much deformation of the bore with repeated rounds? How much erosion from the steam? Me? I really like my bore snake. Any water can quickly be removed.
