Sage, Thank you for sharing your viewpoints. It's good to hear from others about their views, and how they apply them to their lives. The older I get, and the more endurance sport I compete in, the more I find myself leaning towards a vegetarian diet, not for political, or religious reasons, but just because I feel better before, during, and after my endurance training, and events. I still like meat, but who knows, I might give it up one day. I chained smoked for twenty years, and one day I just quit. That was 8 years ago, so I know it is possible to change ones life. Keep posting all the great training for us mere mortals to learn from.

I agree with you Sage about high carb low fat diet. Though I'm not a vegiterian and still enjoy meat. I hope your Marathon training is going well.

+Leighton Clark That's great, man. Just like you, I'm a plant-based man, but I won't get rid of my meat. And it's not THAT much. I'm a runner too and for specific training and/or events I slightly change what and how much I eat. And I believe that people suffering from a metabolic disease should try to change it too, in ordem to get and really live the plant-based diet. Try to read the "Perfect Human Diet". It's a great book.

Love the video Sage! I went vegan almost 2 years ago and quickly saw the benefits health wise and athletically but more importantly I learned how unsustainable and unethical it was to be eating animal products. The three documentaries that everyone should watch is Forks over knives, Earthlings, and Cowspiracy. Once I opened my eyes to the truth, this lifestyle just makes so much sense and I love that you are promoting this message as well! Keep up the great work!

I don't disagree nor do I agree. We all make our own choices from our experiences and knowledge obtained. I choose to eat what I eat and whether I change is up to what happens to me and what i learn along the way. It's hard to just jay I am ______fill in blank) and be it. We don't change overnight, but we do over time because we learn and adjust. Thanks for the vid, love your honesty and your perspective. Are there things you do mentally to fool your body when you think you've reached capacity or to get another 1-2 miles from your run when you feel like quitting? Do you do something incrementally, ie tell yourself to push it for 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile, then focus on the next goal (1/4 of 1/2 mile)? You you do something relaxation wise to get through that agony or breathing rhythm?

What do you think about baked sweet potatoes? I eat a lot of baked ones, but apparently it raises the glycemic index. The WHO also mentioned alcohol to be pretty darn bad for you, yet you had a beer with your dinner ;) Genes and also very important, goals, makes some difference in diet. But the basics is: having a varied diet and dont eat to much and to much of a good thing is a bad thing. Dont overestimate your calory output and dont underestimate your calory output. Please Sage stick to running video's because having an active lifestyle is the very most important thing in being healthy, dont smoke, eat well (that can very well include meat and dairy) and dont drink (or in moderation ;) ).

This explains why the top distance runners (that obviously eat meat, eggs, etc.) look so lean and muscular, whereas vegan athletes just look skinny. Look at Eliud Kipchoge or Mo Farah's body, you don't get those type of muscles with a vegan diet. What did Usain Bolt eat during his Beijing Olympics hwere he won 3 gold medals - chicken mcnuggets, lots and lots of them.

Hi I am glad that you encourage people to eat plant based whole foods. As a nation our diet is killing us but of course being a vegetarian or vegan is not the only way to be healthy. There is nothing wrong with bacon in moderation. You do not eat the poor diet the Kenyans eat. They would eat more meat if they could afford it. Again as a nation we could easily cut meat consumption down by 50%. We don't need bacon in our ice cream. The truth is, no matter how smart pigs are if people did not eat them, they would have been driven to extinction. Simply because they serve no other purpose. You know cows are extinct in the wild.

There are many many things we could now place in the category -humans aren't really meant to eat- probably the majority of the average modern persons diet .e.g. Why do we drink animals milk? because we practically can, not because 'evolution' says we should.Many cultures never did rely on milk, and therefore lose their lactose tolerance in childhood...So any web based pseudo nutrition gurus should stop & think before searching out an argument online.The fact is that humans started out as omnivores.We can survive on plants and animals.It really then comes down to a matter of personal choice and common sense dieting.(individual health problems taken into account).Most modern available foods are so far beyond where it all started, that it is senseless to pretend we can eat as if we are still neanderthals. When I stopped eating meat 30+yrs ago after being convinced of the benefits, a lot of diet literature at the time, suggested a quick demise for would be vegetarians.....My diet is still far from perfect but I feel healthier than ever and thankfully run better than ever.Few diets are ever 100% perfect for any sport but you could and should try to avoid unnecessary chemical additives such as those often fed to farmed animals, keep it varied and keep 'the bad stuff' if you must eat it, in moderation....One thing I teach as a coach is the importance of different foods depending on the distances trained for.There will always be exceptional runners who can get away with anything but for most, a specifically targeted diet will reap additional rewards on top of some smart training.Always fascinating to see what can fuel the elite runners Sage.Thanks for sharing your personal menus and what works well for you.Your times obviously don't suffer.You can feel happier for it and your conscience tells you that you aren't adding to some of the modern farming exploitation methods. And It might well work for others who choose to try the no-meat approach....Thanks again for openly sharing your perfectly valid opinions, experience & training Sage......Keep up the great work.Looking forward to the next blog.

Sage go completely vegan and your times will improve. The key is more fruit. carb up with fruit... especially use bananas, blend to get the calories you need. I'm a 66 year old tennis professional who is vegan and consumes about 15 - 20 bananas per day.. blended with kale or celery or spinach and a little coconut milk. If you're looking for some tennis tips check out my youtube videos at CTW ACADEMY... thanks for your vids. You are absolutely right on about the benefits of whole food plant-based, people that rant that you should stick to running vids do not have a clue about what brings about true health, keep ranting, the suffering of humans (who consume high animal based diets) and the animals (who pay for it with their lives) needs to be told. All the best, Tom Avery

I don't think you should really be concern with your amount of protein intake. 2.5g / kg / day is the recommanded intake for a regular intensive sport training! And please, don't feel ashamed if some day you wanna eat some food with animal product! Veganism is like a religion, you could be moderate, tolerant,i think it's a good (better?) way to sell idea's! Or you could be a fundamentalist and work on guilt and shame. Enjoying your meal, enjoying cooking is a good way to learn how to cook proper food, if sometime you used some animal product... whatever... make peace with your mind... Keep your feeling real, speak true and stick to your belief.

Man I am loosing respect for you. You are not a nutritionist so dont make invalid statements about diet from readying highly controversial vegan and vegetarian books. Nutrition is not black and white and most people in youtube have no idea. And yes everyone is different. Wonder why inuits can eat a fish based diet without getting vitamin C deficiencies? If there are variances in peoples skin, there are also variances in digestive enzymes. Stick to running vids. Stop spreading BS.
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 8 лет назад
+Alex A Diet is like religion. People are going to be very opinionated and passionate about it! I am passionate about the vegetarian/vegan, high carb, plant-based lifestyle. What statement did I make that was invalid? I'm not claiming to be an RD or a doctor (of course not!), but I did take multiple Nutrition classes at Cornell University as well as Chem and Bio. I consider myself to be a science guy and i take these things very seriously. There are a lot of RDs that provide pretty bad diet advice IMO as we are all shaped by personal bias (myself included). There is a lot of money and vested interests in the meat/dairy industry here in the US...a lot of money and power. As far as Inuits go...well they do what they have to survive in a very harsh climate. No fault there. I wouldn't say their diet allows them to thrive and live very healthy lifestyles (they get Vitamin C from eating raw meat...you don't need very much) though. In terms of the environment and energy conservation a plant-based diet is more efficient hands-down. Here in the US we have a ton of problems with obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. I believe diet is a big part of that. If people ate more veggies and fruit the world would be healthier.
@AlexA-fw1bz
@AlexA-fw1bz 8 лет назад
+Vo2maxProductions Exactly. If diet is like religion dont make vids about it, since its going to create conflict. In this vid you sound like you are preaching for a vegan/vegetarian diet. I am a fan of you, because you are one of the few youtubers that didnt preach a specific diet. There are big variances between human races. Dark skin, white skin, body types, lactose tolerance, etc, etc. Why would you believe everyone could thrive on a vegan diet? If there are very obvious physical differences like skin colour or body type why wouldnt you think there are also biological differences as well? I was vegan for 4 years and got very bad vitamin B12 and Iron deficiencies listening to Durianriders advice. I tried EVERYTHING to continue on a vegan diet (shots, iron infusions, high carb, more protein, less protein, more fuits and vegs, supplements, etc, etc) and nothing worked. I felt so sick and it took me a LONG time to recover. The doctor said I could have gotten permanent nerve damage. It cost me a lot of money to go to the doctors and get supplements. And now I feel WAY better eating meat and dairy. And im running faster. Thats why I believe people should stop talking about nutrition, because people that believe everything they see in youtube will follow your advice and it can be dangerous since a single diet is not going to work for everyone. Plus, I run 80-100 miles a week and I am a full time student. I know how it feels to be tired. Running so much is so stressful to the body. Veganism can make it way worse. Especially for high milage runners that tend to be low in iron. And you know that the best runners in the world are not vegan. And yes, Kenyan and Ethiopians eat high carb, but most if not all eat meat or chicken every day and TONS of milk.
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 8 лет назад
+Alex A I'm sorry to hear that you had low B12 and low iron going vegan. B12 is for sure a very dangerous deficiency. As with any diet, one must take any advice or statement by anybody with a grain of salt. You honestly can't believe anything you read or watch on the internet these days...I mean, someone could try to do a running workout that I've suggested and injure themselves. Nothing and no topic is a "safe bet." So I'm not going to stop talking about nutrition/diet and I'm not going to stop preaching about a whole foods, plant-based diet. This is my personal youtube channel, I state disclaimers when I see necessary, and I have a right to share my opinion. At some level there will always be controversy and people that are going to disagree with and maybe even hate what I say (when you put yourself out there on social media that is bound to happen). This is a lifestyle that I truly believe in and considering all human beings (aside from rare genetic disorders and allergies) share 99.5% of the same DNA we can all thrive on a plant-based diet (nothing extreme and without B12 though). I don't view plant-based as being "extreme" like I would consider "Fruitarian." Your argument with skin color is a bit of a stretch though. Look at our teeth, look at our stomachs. Why would we be drinking the milk from another mammal as full grown adults on a mass-produced scale? And why cows? Cow's milk is designed for one thing: baby cows! (don't get me wrong I love cheese and ice cream though!). The human body is pretty amazing at adapting to things and of course can run on high animal fat when that is all it has...but it doesn't mean it's ideal. I grew up as an ovo-lacto vegetarian and I was open to trying meat at times (mainly in Japan and at childhood pizza parties) but really don't care for the taste of it. Plenty of distance runners that eat red meat all the time end up low in iron. As far as the East African runners go...I'm sure they eat some meat and put milk in their tea, but they don't consume tons of animal products like we do in the US. Most of their diet is centered around Ugali and they eat vegetables as well (high carb, low fat). I like to talk about plant-based diets because they are sustainable for the world. We're polluting the Earth (deforestation, methane etc.) with all the energy going into livestock and dairy...if everyone in the world ate meat/animal products like we do in the US there would not be enough energy in the world to go around. Then there's the mis-treatment (abuse and slaughter) of animals...but I digress... But most of my videos on here are still going to be mainly about running. Glad to hear you are feeling stronger and running faster.

+Vo2maxProductions There is no evidence of humans eating vegan diets in the past. And only a VERY few ate a vegetarian diet (only Buddhist monks?) so how are we supposed to be adapted to a diet we never ate? How do you know the long term consequences of veganism if it has never been properly studied in the long term neither across generations? There is a reason why humans always ate meat and dairy. Its because it is rich in calories and nutrients/minerals. Most if not all the fruit you buy in the supermarket is genetically altered. They dont exist in the wild. So you are eating a diet with foods that didnt exist before and you are telling me thats the way we are supposed to eat? Go and look how a wild banana looks and how many calories it has. Or go and try to live of blueberries in Boulder and see how many buckets you need to fill to meet your caloric requirement. Never mind your mineral and vitamin requirement. Its imposible to live of fruits and vegs in the wild, so I dont understand how that is the diet we were designed to eat. And our bodies are perfectly designed to eat meat and dairy. Humans even evolved in recent times to become lactose tolerant. There are people that have enzymes to digest milk and some people dont. People who have the enzymes to digest milk have ancestors that adapted to drink milk in places were other foods were scarce or because they were smart enough to realise that it was easier and more effective to drink milk. And you are telling me we are all the same? Seriously Sage. You are very misinformed. Vegan and vegetarian books are full of BS and they will tell you that humans have teeth that were designed to eat fruits. Read books from anthropologists and real scientists that have dedicated their whole lives studying and know what they are talking about. Plus how is shipping fruit across the planet more eco friendly? I eat local fruit and veg, local meat, local honey and local eggs. All organic and local. How is someone on a vegan diet importing soy from Brasil more eco friendly than me? It does not only mean you are using tons of fuel exporting food, you are also exploiting 3rd world countries land and ecosystem causing also huge environmental damage. But vegans need to import food. Almost no country can produce such tremendous fruit and veg variability required to get all nutrients for a vegan diet. Eating meat and dairy doesnt mean you eat in McDonalds. It can be sustainable and eco friendly. I dont have a car either, so im sure I am more eco friendly than vegans driving everywhere. Yes, meat and dairy production can be cruel even if it is responsible and organic. But nature is not all hugs and fun. Thats what we think it is and what the vegan community sells. Im not against veganism or vegetarianism. I wish I could still be vegan. But I disagree in how vegans preach and preach and spread misinformation. You dont see people eating a traditional diet preaching. If you dont like those religious people preaching to you on the street saying you will go to hell if you dont become Christian, then stop preaching, because you are doing the same. Then you get people like Durianrider and Freelee that say that if you are not vegan you deserve to die. Funny isnt it? They are compassionate to other animals but not to humans. Probably because of how excluded they feel from the rest of society.
