“The ingredients were faulty, the taste was ok” is exactly why I can’t go out to eat anymore. I always think to myself, “ I can make this better and spend 1/3 of the money” 🤪

Oh my gosh so true! After spending whack of money eating out somewhere I feel like it’s just not as satisfying as making it and eating it at home. The costs are even higher here to eat out and just the cost of food in general so finding ways to use things we can grow and learning the skills to make them is just valuable in itself, too if off with tasting better and it’s a win win win 🏆

I started making a lot of stuff at home not even because of the ingredients in store bought stuff, it was more from me not being able to find stuff I truly liked the flavor of. So I started making my own sauces, dressings, pickles, etc. I haven’t gotten into bread yet but I do make my own pie crusts and pizza doughs but I’m determined to tackle bread in 2024

The easiest way to achieve this is with dutch oven no knead bread. It's literally impossible to mess up, super quick & simple to make, and you can add different ingredients to change up the flavor. Such a game-changer 🙌🏼

May I suggest a new spreadable? Once you mention tzatziki… you must try skordalia… it is a potato purée with lots of fresh garlic, lemon olive oil salt and peper. It is like humus but with potatoes… Greek recipe.. spread it on sourdough bread. One of the most delicious recipes that does not gain popularity… and I don’t know why. We usually eat it with fish or beat roots.

I am so inspired! I live in Japan and Valentines day is a big thing here and the common here is girls give presents(chocolates and sweets) to boys and since I’m married, I just thought it would be cute to give homemade cookies to my husband; as so I did! I was so happy last night because he enjoyed my homemade cookies! he devoured it and even told me it was the best cookie he had ever tasted, way better than any cafe/shops or grocery bought cookies. I was flattered! And because of this, I want to make more for him lol not just cookies but other baked goods too!

I just found your channel today & subscribed. I'm really interested in learning how to do some of the things that you mentioned & am also curious about how you do all of that without having to buy tons of gadgets. I started making fruit butters, canning tomatoes, apple sauce, stews... this year. I made a list of the items I would need to be able to preserve food when they are on sale / in season & purchased the equipment in the order it went on sale. I used to get so frustrated when I found recipes I wanted to try & was always short 1 or 2 items, so I started dehydrating common ingredients. One thing I would suggest to you would be to try growing your own tomatoes if possible. The difference in flavor is night & day. As Jessica Sowards of Roots & Refuge Farm says, " Store bought tomatoes taste like disappointment". Tomatoes are one of the easiest, most prolific things you can grow. I had so many this year I ran out of freezer space (didn't have the canners yet) & was giving them away to friends & neighbors. I would love to find community to preserve with for both social reasons & to learn from each other. Looking forward to finding healthier ways of eating & living more minimally. I just saw that you're Canadian as well! I'm in Windsor Ontario.

Thank you for sharing! It’s crazy how much society has taught us to go buy all ready made products. It’s actually pretty easy, healthier, cheaper, and kind of fun to do it yourself. I’ve slowly been making more things at home and my mind has been blown with what I can actually create myself!

I have been making more things at home, too. My mom always made her own tomato sauce, and my dad made soups. I am planning for a much bigger garden space so I can grow more and can it up, but it will take me a few seasons to get it running the way I want it. When I was your age, it was all about working so I could buy things, pay bills. I always was a gardener at heart, but it took some trial and error to get there. It's so inspiring to see some of the younger generation getting back to simple living. XO!

Most of the ingredients used to make these things are stuff I don’t buy regularly or keep in our home so I’m curious if cost wise it balances out or is close to the same? I do love the idea of know every ingredient going into a product though 😊

I make a sourdough boule weekly and have done a breakdown of costs. $0.56 for the flour, $0.02 for salt, not including costs for starter which is about $0.03. Total to make a loaf is $0.61 much less than a $6 at a store. I don't buy any breads including pita, tortillas etc. All of my condiments as well and quick pickles. This year I have gotten into fresh cheeses such as cottage, ricotta, yogurt. I just did my first Feta and am going to make mozzarella this week.

I loove making food from scratch. Part of it as what you mentioned the food you buy in thr supermarket they add a bunch of ingredients that you never heard of and they add bunch of unnecessary sugars and salt. So I rather make it by myself so at least I know what’s in it. Unfortunately, I live alone so for example mayo, I don’t make it as I can’t finish it all by myself in a short period of time.

Super simple Go buy a cheapo stick blender Pour avocado oil in pint mason jar, up to 1 cup line. Add 1 egg and 1 egg yolk, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp vinegar. Put ur stickblender in on bottom of jar and turn on. Move up and down a few inches. Do not come up to the top of oil. It will super quick become emulsified and thick. Now u can go all way to top and then mash it back done twds bottom. Do not over stickblend! 15-30 seconds is prob all it’ll take
