WHAT I EAT IN A DAY | TYPE 1 DIABETES

Henry is sharing what he eats in a day with Type 1 Diabetes. He is 9 years old and has had Type 1 diabetes for 7 years (since he was 2 years old). He wears the Dexcom continuous glucose monitor and the Omnipod pump. He manages independently at school with the help from us via texting. I am sharing this for a couple reasons.
1) Henry can eat anything anyone else eats (he just needs insulin)
2) He has no carb limit or food restrictions
3) I do want you to know this is just a tiny portion of what a Type 1 diabetic deals with in a day and in fact...it's the EASY part of managing diabetes--counting carbs and bolusing for them.
4) Comment below if you would like to see a full Day in the Life

So proud of you. I am on my 60th year with type 1. When I was your age there were no pumps, sensors, finger sticks, or even alcohol pads. I had to boil a glass syringe and screw on a very hot metal needle. I had to sharpen my needles. Do the best you can and expect to have bad days. Remember, you are not a diabetic, you are a person who has diabetes.

My daughter was just diagnosed a month ago with T1. I see already how uneducated people are in the differences between T1 and T2. I have to tell people daily my daughter can still eat what she did before she was diagnosed we just have to give insulin for her carb count. Thanks for the videos!

Even when we tell people..I feel like a lot of times they aren't even listening or caring and go on thinking they are right. It's really frustrating.

Why in the world would you want your daughter to have blood sugar spiking up and down and up and down. DO NOT listing to the ADA or the JDRF. They are more concerned with keeping Eli Lilly, which lavishes them with millions of dollars annually, fat and happy with huge sales of overpriced insulin.

You guys are amazing. You’ve got to be constantly exhausted in thought and “worry” about your baby and his blood sugar. I share your families story with my kiddos in 6th grade health (little snippets I have learned from your videos - no names or anything of course) as a friend of mine with a kiddo who has diabetes. It’s neat to “know” someone and have real life information and stories to educate with. Thank you for using the platform and high 5 to Henry for being a rock star!

I think people get confused because there are so many schools of thought . In our area I have noticed that many of the T 1D kids are low carb /Keto . Then there are the parents that don’t mind their kids eating hundreds of carbs a day and just correcting as they go along . I guess it just all comes down to what you feel like you should do and if your kid would be able to comply. Love your videos ❤️ So glad you are enjoying your new home 😊
@dreamflight6000
@dreamflight6000 5 лет назад
We don't let him have hundreds of carbs either but he just eats what we would eat regardless if he had type 1. The main thing people need to know is that type 1's CAN have carbs if they choose too. Thank you!

@@dreamflight6000 Yes, if they are injected with tons of overpriced insulin. Why would you do this. Low carb (except carbs from veggies, which you can eat all you want), is the ONLY WAY TO GO.

I really like watching your videos and think you're an awesome mother. I also suffer From T1D. Unfortunately, despite your best efforts there is one fundamental mistake. You can't let your kid eat anything he wants no matter how much you love him. The key to this disease is long term and I mean long term control over your blood sugars. An A1C of 6.5% or higher means substantial problems down the line. I myself maintain strictly an A1C of 5.6%-5.9% - not the best but good enough and I can eat many foods I thought I'd never eat. However, as any diabetic you can't let your son eat fruit, candy or any concentrated sugar, that will open up substantial problems. Last thing is he needs a close-loop system like the 670G that will help him keep his sugars in check.

@@dreamflight6000 that's a common misconception. We had a research team from Duke University study 100+ LC t1ds and families. The quality of life improvements were dramatic and the main comments were 'easier, less hypoglycemia, more hope for the future and better controlled. D management essentially becomes set it and forget it - not playing that constant up then down game is like a new lease on life.
