Wow - thank you SO much to everyone who shared what veganism is like in your city/hometown 🧡 I really appreciate you all sharing your stories/experiences, I appreciate it so much & feel like I've learned a lot! It seems like overall veganism is still growing in popularity which is super refreshing to hear - and hopefully we continue to see a shift towards more plant-based eating xx

I live in Brighton, UK. It’s one of the most vegan friendly cities in Europe and almost everywhere has a good selection of vegan restaurants. I have never really had any other vegan friends in my city so that hasn’t changed much but several people across my life have gone vegan so it’s definitely on the agenda still.

I’m originally from Germany which is definitely a great country for vegans, there are many options everywhere and there are new vegan/veganised products coming out pretty much every month. 😊 But I’ve been living in France for 10 years now and veganism is still very uncommon here, espacially in the smaller cities. They’re only just now coming to terms with vegetarianism haha 😅 So I love going back to Germany, whenever I visit my family I stock up on all the vegan goods, so definitely still popular there.

I live close to Madrid and I recently learned that it emplace 56 vegan restaurants, fully vegan. It is a great time to be vegan or vegetarian here. Barcelona is even more vegan-friendly. Around Barcelona, in other little cities, you can find a bunch of vegan options. Although it's more rural areas it becomes more treaty to find good vegan options.

i moved to Brussels about two years ago, being vegan is Brussels is definitely possible. There are vegan cafes, supermarkets all sell vegan products, you can even buy vegan Brussels waffles. A lot of places have at least one vegan option. There are a lot of alternatives from my point of view!

I live in finland (not in one of the biggest cities tho) and there are no vegan restaurants here but the bigger cities do have them, but most restaurants here have some vegan options. the grocery stores have a lot of vegan stuff tho, especially because we have so many cool vegan products that are made in finland! I study in university and at student events there's always vegan stuff to eat and I definitely see many students using vegan products a lot even if they're not eating completely plant-based. there's also vegan food available every day in our university cafeterias. if you live in a bigger city in finland, there's tons of vegan options even if we don't have that many completely vegan places.

I live in the South (USA) & our area is a hotspot city for trying out new restaurants before they move on to other cities. So some stay & most go out of business due to location & popular opinions in the area. Our town is mainly BBQ, steak & chicken. We are yet to receive a vegan restaurant, which is so sad (in my opinion) Most southerners don't realize how tasty & nourishing vegan meals can be. I often feel very much alone in my own little vegan world. Amanda, I absolutely love your tutorials & try a lot of your meals. Thank You! Keep 'em coming 😊

Hey Amanda! You’re actually the first person I’ve heard comment on the decreasing popularity of veganism. I can relate and I’ve noticed it as well. I live in Florida, USA (been vegan myself for about 7 years). The city I live in has never been poplar for vegans so nothing has changed there, but overall, and especially on social media, I can see that veganism has lost steam. Like some others have commented, I’ve seen a large shift away from plant-based eating towards ancestral/paleo/animal-based. I think there are a handful of really popular voices on social media who are driving this. And many seem to make the switch back to animal products for health reasons (like thyroid problems, nutrient and mineral deficiencies, etc.) Will be interesting to see where the trends go! 💛

Hello Amanda! To answer your question: I have been vegan for 7+ years (going 8 2023). I live in the northern part of Sweden in a quite small city with a population of just under 100K. A small city compared to the capital and bigger cities but still the third biggest city in the northern part of Sweden. Anyway, here the vegan demand has increased over the years. When I went vegan 2015 you could barely find a vegan dish on a restaurant to eat here. The city did not have much to offer. The range of vegan products in the grocery stores was ok but not much. But since 2019 I would say it has exploded. Also an increased amount of restaurants now offers at least one vegan dish on the menu. Still there is a long way to go to meet " an ideal vegan dream" and also in comparison to the big cities in Sweden. Anyway where I live today 2023 I would say it is rather easy to be vegan and to eat plantbased. More people actually have heard of the term plantbased food and less people give you the weird look. 😅💚 Still I find it hard to find likeminded people and new friends, but that is another question... I can understand it feels sad for you with the decreased result where you live. I do have the strong feeling that for many "fancy" people veganism was a trend and that is a result you live to now. I might be wrong though... but you can see from youtube also the people who "stopped" being vegan really just did it because it was trending or bc of their eating disorders... sadly. When doing the ethical transition to veganism there is no "stopping being vegan". There is a difference between eating plantbased and having a vegan awekaning. When being vegan as an ethical and moral way of living you don't follow a trend, also only illness might be the thing that could make you have to "stop being a vegan". But with all that said, I don't like to label it to hard because that is what make people turn against eachother and I feel sometimes I do not want to label myself vegan just because of how mean people can be. Thank you as always for yout lovely inspiration and the content that you share. 🙏❤ Hugs from Sweden! 🇸🇪❄

Ducky, I've experienced that too in terms of the popularity and perception of veganism here in the USA! I think it's mostly due to the trend based cycle of the wellness industry. Now the hype is all about hormone balancing meals with wild caught or pasture raised meats, eggs, and animal products. I think people are now less into labeling their diets because of fear of public backlash as well as wanting the flexibility that not calling themselves vegan allows (which is honestly understandable). I think people are looking at "quality" sourcing and seasonality of their food instead. As someone who has been vegan for almost 10 years I do sometimes get discouraged that it's seen as such a "trend," and that's why a lot of vegan places go in and out of business. I kinda miss when everyone was obsessed with going vegan lol. I find it easier to find plant-based community when I follow media outlets like VegNews that constantly celebrates all of the new vegan products and innovations as well as businesses and restaurants that are embracing the vegan lifestyle. Plus following content creators such as yourself for inspo. That being said, I totally get that for a lot of people with specific health concerns or access issues, being vegan isn't possible for them. I never judge anyone either way for their personal choices, you do you! I never assume that I will be vegan for life because things happen and circumstances are always in flux for everyone. I also think that as our generation gets older, people just want to stress less about their food choices and often don't have time to do the planning that is sometimes required in maintaining a balanced vegan diet, especially in social settings. I think a lot of people are trying to eat more plants, but are also allowing the room not to be "perfect" about their diets because we have seen that perfectionism and purity mindset backfire on so many influencers. That's just my two cents lol! Sorry for the novel 🤣
@rileyanderson4000
@rileyanderson4000 Год назад
This is also what I've experienced too in California! People seem more open to eating plant based options, yet seem more reluctant to be fully vegan. A few years ago people didn't seem as defensive about eating animal products. The wellness community exploded during the past few years due to the pan de mic and it's started to become more popular with the alt right who are usually very pro animal agriculture and "balancing hormones" by eating paleo, etc

I’m in Devon, UK and I think veganism is getting more popular, I have seen some vegan businesses closing but I think that’s more of a result of veganism becoming more mainstream. Products are now readily available in supermarkets where they are usually cheaper that specialist vegan shops. With the cost of living crisis it makes it harder to justify paying more when everything is going up so much. Also most pubs, restaurants and even fast food places now have great vegan options which makes it much easier to go out and eat with non vegan friends and family. I love to eat at vegan only places much more but generally I rarely eat out now. What I do love is that more and more sections of meat aisles are being taken up with vegan alternatives. I hate going in that aisle but it’s amazing to see the amount of meat products reducing.

Hi! Regarding the question of veganism’s popularity: I live in Amsterdam where perhaps we don’t see as many exclusively vegan restaurants etc, I feel like this is mainly because veganism has become part of the mainstream, rather than a kind of subculture like it used to be. So veganism is not only available at vegan-specific places, but incorporated into ‘regular’ shops, food places and stuff. Which in my opinion is great as it makes vegan food really accessible :) also to non-vegans

well let's start with the fact that I live in the Philippines ( a third world country) so were technically always late on what's new lmao but on a serious note, veganism is not a common practice in my country and MOST of the filipinos isn't even aware of the lifestyle. Filipino cuisine is mostly meat-based, such as traditional favorites, adobo and sinigang. Veganism is still viewed as a lifestyle only possible for the rich, given the costlier plant-based and gourmet alternatives to your everyday food choices. I was born and raised on a city and a higher up area so I see a lot and eat at vegan restaurants. (but that's only my experience living with privilege). It isn't treated something as an essential lifestyle here.

I'm currently in the North of UK and I can say that even though there are a few 100% vegan places, they only serve vegan junk food (burgers, fried foods), so the food is not very varied in this sense. However, most of the restaurants in the city I live in all have multiple vegan options, which is great because it allows to have more food variety. All of those restaurants are chains, so it should be like this everywhere in the UK. I have only seen one 100% vegan place shut down and that was because of the cost of living and the post pandemic crisis, but it's the only place to my knowledge that had to close. I really enjoy eating in the UK because where I am from originally (Switzerland), the majority of restaurants are very "behind" and don't offer vegan options, or will look you side-ways if you ask for something vegan lol EDIT: Even though I've never had a great experience in the restaurants in Switzerland, I want to add that the supermarket are doing great by creating new vegan products and every time I go for a food shop and I can stay 20 min in front of the vegan section because they have so many new things constantly! The last thing I tried was vegan smoked salmon, which was basically just carrots and a bit of oil cooked in a smoke oven. My family isn't vegan and not very open-minded but they LOVED it ☺

Lots of restaurants began offering vegan desserts, which wasn't the case for the last 2 years(except a few places)and even a new vegan supermarket has recently opened. With that being said, I don't feel like all spots have vegan options and there are no fully vegan spots in my area. So in my city vegan isn't extremely well known but we're definitely making progress :)

hi! love you and your videos so much! :) I live in the UK, and am currently based in Glasgow, Scotland, however I have previously lived in London and Brighton too! I am vegetarian and eat plant based foods all the time! I'd say all these cities have amazing vegan options that are so easily accessible, and vegan cafes/restaurants/options are really easy to get to/try without too much effort! I think veganism in the UK is still pretty popular, but it is still much more popular in cities or places with a bigger student population. I don't think veganism is waning here, but some people maybe became vegan when it was seen as being 'trendy' rather than being serious about sticking to it! i am hopeful it will only continue to grow in popularity, or that there will at least be more options even if you live in the countryside or aren't near a city with so many vegan choices!

Great question! Some decrease is possibly linked to buyer behaviour & veganism not gaining as much popularity as expected. I'm not vegan but eat vegan/veggie majority of the time, and why we haven't went all in (and others might relate) is because life can feel so hard at times & honestly the comfort & enjoyment in animal based products can be very real. I also think we're working through the tension of wanting to feel personally responsible for positive climate action with rightfully holding governments & organisations accountable, and this territory can lend itself to inconsistent behaviours at an individual level. I live in London, so could eat vegan-only very easily, but similarly have seen those businesses be some of the first to close

Hi Amanda! It is so sad to see the vegan community shrinking. I live in a small city in Northern California. We had a big vegan community and over the last year, most of those people are no longer vegan…my friends specifically transitioned towards the trend of “animal based ancestral eating” lots and lots of animal products, following major claims by a couple of “carnivore” eaters who claim that being vegan is horrible for us. It’s been really sad. I feel like I lost my community and miss how things used to be! We have hardly any options for eating out here and unfortunately the first vegan restaurant that opened here didn’t last their first year of business!!! 😫

In the USA I recently heard that the sales for Beyond Meat and Impossible Meat have gone down a lot since 2019 or 2020. Unnatural Vegan just posted a video about this. The reasons were suggested to be that first time buyers found the "meat" to not be very tasty, and they found it expensive and also not much healthier than real meat. Here in California I've also had a lot of friends stop being vegan. However, I feel like restaurants are including more vegan options. I think a lot of people are starting to include more plant based options in their diet but giving up full veganism.

I moved from Lake Macquarie NSW to the small country town of Gloucester. It is mainly a cattle farming community so there are no vegan restaurants and almost no vegetarian options, let alone vegan options in cafes or pubs. When my husband and I have travelled on holidays and there's a vegan cafe, it's like I've died and gone to heaven. So I end up eating vegetarian, the only option being pizza usually, which fortunately I love. I don't know any other vegans but both my nephews are vegan and they live on junk food only. So I love to make my own vegan butter, mayonnaise, seed bread and lots more at home. I've been mostly vegan for ten years but my husband isn't so it gets challenging at times. Fully vegan restaurants are usually in affluent country towns or big cities only. I think in the more Cosmopolitan cities, vegan options are more common now than ever before, especially, say Newcastle and Sydney NSW, Australia but as for dedicated vegan restaurants, they are few and far between. Love your videos Amanda.I have tried several of your recipes. By the way, the stems of brocoli are the sweetest part of the vegetable. You might like to try cutting off the thin outer layer and cutting it into batons or discs to add to any meal. I am going to get brave and try tempeh!

I'm from Fife in Scotland, we have a few vegan cafés opening of late, and vegan food is readily available in the shops here. But in the UK it is a really tough time for small businesses at the moment, emerging out of the pandemic and also having to deal with the problems and costs relating to Brexit as well as soaring energy costs. Hopefully this won't impact on the vegan community too much.

I live on Long Island, New York and a lot of vegan businesses have been closing lately, in NYC as well. BUT a lot of restaurants are continuing to incorporate more vegan options. There's just not many fully vegan places, which sucks. It seems like its an ebb and flow. The demand for vegan food is getting lower but I believe it is a cost thing an hopefully things get better and more places can open!

I am from sweden and the vegan options and veganism is spreading there all the time and I feel like it has just increased the last couple of years. There are also many people going back to this "real" diet where they want to eat more of an animal based diet without preservatives and claim that all these vegan substitutes are unhelathy for you. Although, veganism and vegan products still spread. They just launched a completley vegan burger king in Stockholm. I currently live in Dubai and the selection here is very good too.

I see more vegetarian restaurants than vegan near me. But, there are some vegan restaurants. I live outside Seattle, and have several vegetarian friends, but none are vegan. I’m primarily plant-based, but don’t adhere strictly to any particular diet. But, since I have trouble digesting dairy, I tend to prefer vegan recipes over vegetarian.

I live in Kentucky's largest city, and I have just been saying the exact same thing recently- so many vegan restaurants have closed, and the vegan options at other restaurants are getting fewer as well. It is very disconcerting! I have been to both Germany and England in the past year, and it still seems to be thriving there.

In regards to how "famous" is veganism in my country (México), actually there was almost nothing vegan in the supermarkets and finding something to eat in restaurants was almost imposible a few years ago. Now, at least here, we are sloooowly getting there... so veganism it's just starting here, really. However, it's still sooo expensive most of the times, due to the low demand 😢

Yummy recipes! That dinner looked amazing :) As far as your Vegan eats talk, I live in Portland, Oregon and I gotta say we don't have a shortage of vegan options thankfully!! I'll definitely say just based on social media, I feel like being vegan was suuuuuper trendy a few years ago and that a lot of vegan 'influencers' have stoped being vegan since. Maybe that's whats happening at a large scale in your town? Just speculation :)

I don't think veganism is getting any less popular (it's more likely GAINING popularity) but it's harder for vegan restaurants to stay afloat, especially with the current economy. COVID has also had a big impact, and took out a few of my favorite vegan restaurants here where I live (Kansas City, Missouri - U.S.)

Hi!! I live in Pennsylvania, and to be honest I think the vegan scene here is growing!! Many people used to look down on vegans here because they were seen as "pushing their beliefs" but for some reason its completely changed and people think you are strong for it now I guess, at least in my case 😂 anyway lots of vegan restaurants have recently opened up in my area along with tons of vegan options at other restaurants. It didn't used to be like this even as close as two years ago, so id say definitely growing here.

I live in Johannesburg and veganism has become more accepted. Fully vegan restaurants do not survive and have to have at least one or two meat/fish options so quite a few originally vegan restaurants have transformed. There's way more plant based products on the shelves and I think both vegan and non vegan folks buy them.

I live in Montreal, which is a large city (3 million) with a predominantly French culture. I have also noticed a decline in the popularity of veganism. I think it has to do with a few things. I think the pandemic really put a damper on progress, and people seemed to get really entrenched in their ways and eating habits during that time, and less open to change or exploring veganism. I think the current economic situation has brought the opening of vegan restaurants to a grinding halt. None have closed here, and we have many options, but none have opened in a few years. Finally I really feel like there is a backlash against veganism in the media, and with the keto and carnivore trends. I find it quite sad. However, I hope that one positive to come with the inflation situation is that soy milk is now the same price as dairy milk and some vegan protein sources are now cheaper than beef in Montreal. Maybe this will encourage people to try? Even so, old habits die hard.

I think the want to label something or oneself as vegan has decreased. But generally, the amount of people who eat less meet, or dairy etc. have increased. I think that lots of restaurants have started to have vegan options etc., but I think wholly vegan restaurants have decreased. This is for Germany. But I was recently in Copenhagen again, and I noticed that lots of vegan restaurants from my last visit, four years ago, had closed now. But I think that is also due to covid. And those business already are very niche and have a hard time to find costumers I guess, and then during Covid they just could not get through. Maybe, especially when it comes to the vegan businesses, cafes, restaurants, it might have to do more with covid than veganism. But again, I think veganism had this high a few years ago, but now vegansim has become more accepted and it is not this like exclusive space anymore, that it might have seemed to be back then. And therefore, vegans might also feel more comfortable in "normal" cafes, and of course it is more easy for cafes etc. that have options for everyone to stay alive and make money. I don't know if that makes sense. Just some random thoughts.
