Yes, I listened to your entire video ;) My extended family is the largest flower vendor at the Portland Farmers Market and have been doing it for over 2 decades, not as a side hustle, but as their main income. It'll get easier I promise you. Keep up the good work. If you're located on a main road, put up a self pay flower stand and make bouquets for it. Depending on if you're on the main road or not, that can fetch $20-$100K alone. Our farm is on a main small highway so we erected a 3 wall self pay stand. Apparently if you do 4 walls (with a door), there are rules and regulations. But if you do 3 walls only and there's no one manning it, the laws totally change. On Mother's Day, we double the price of our flowers to $50. We normally only sell them for $25. Plus, many flower vendors create the bouquets the night before, but we simply bring 30-40 5 gallon buckets with loose stems packed and arrange the bouquets on the spot for customers. By doing this, we can sell much more bouquets and customize the orders. We do many farmers market and many times we sell out. We do another farmers market on a different day and have to bring our 5 kiddos with us, ages 2-11, so I totally get the issue with kids distracting you, because that happens to us ALL THE TIME lol. Our 5 year old is autistic so he's a handful at the farmers market too lol... It's very tough for us, but at that market alone, just my wife and 11 year old daughter can make 100+ bouquets on good days while I man the square and make some occasional arrangements AND watch and tend to the smaller kiddos.

I have no interest in selling at a Farmer's Market, but I do go to our local market every Saturday and this is so interesting to me to know how much effort goes into every product at every booth. This only makes me appreciate my local market and the people who sell there even more! ❤️

I could listen to another few hours of your tips, tricks and advice about growing flowers, arranging them and selling at the market. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us! This year was my first year growing and now I'm hooked. Next year is an experiment year of what grows well here for me and constructing good flower beds. I won't rule out selling bouquets here and there, but my focus is to narrow down what I want to grow, learn how to grow it well and develop my business plan. I love your idea of seasonality, and that you have been so transparent on this journey. I'm curious- because I know you said your on year 2 of growing... If you could only plant 5 flowers from seed next year, what would they be?? Oh and the reasons for each! @@NaturallyBrittany , gosh that’s a great question, my first year I tried a little bit of everything, this year I focused on the ones that weren’t so “fussy”… and my style is a little different, I really liked making arrangements with herbs. Especially all the different basils and dill, cilantro flowers, catnip, parsley, sage, rosemary etc… then for focal flowers zinnias, snapdragons, and sunflowers. I also had my dahlias I grew from seed last year to come back this year so that was exciting! I’m in NC zone 7b. If I had to choose 5 it would be all the Queen Lime series zinnias, basil, snapdragons, gomphrena, (which is as easy as zinnias) and dill. My color palette is a little more muted, with whites/creams, deep purple from the opal basil, and greens… my arrangements kinda have a vintage vibe. It’s just a hobby but I would make extra and take them down to our garden center and sell my extras. Anyways girl, thanks for all you do!!!

@@kellynagel2495 I hear so many people rave about how easy Gomphrena is to grow, but mine was so pathetic this year! I'm not sure where I went wrong... but I'll have to do more research and try again this year. Did you plant yours in landscape fabric? I'm thinking I must have waited to long to get my transplants in the ground... Do you know which variety you planted? Mine was the Audray White.

@@NaturallyBrittany I never use landscape fabric… I use my flower beds to grow my flowers.. It’s the only place I have to grow right now… the seeds are from baker creek, they are like a magenta, pale pink and white mix. And I start my seeds the lazy way like you showed, prick out later into cells when I have the time lol

I have become a flower-holic! I LOVE it so much! This is year 2 for me of growing flowers from seed and planting them in my backyard garden. I have a friend who lives on a farm and does a Farmerś Market on the weekends. She asked me if I wanted to sell flowers with her this coming summer, which I am thrilled about! Brittany, I'm not only still here watching at the end - I actually skipped back and re-listened to a few bits that were particularly relevant to my situation, while supervising my three pre-schoolers and doing the morning chores. I can't say how happy and enthusiastic it makes me to hear about your experience at the markets, and your passion for arranging... I feel just the same way! I only did a couple of markets before I gave birth to our youngest (now 10 months), and I really enjoyed them...but if I could only choose one 'side hustle' (and realistically, that's all I can fit in for now with several fussy little ones who don't sleep much at all, no babysitters, and a super busy hubby), it would be arranging for weddings and events and providing flowers for DIY events. It gives me so much joy and purpose... When I have a bit more experience under my belt, I'd love to use my teaching background to run on-farm workshops, too. Even when I don't have a florist delivery scheduled, my 'deadheading' chore turns into picking flowers for a mock bridal bouquet - just for practice and the joy of it ;) Thanks so much for your insights and advice. yes when I do my winter arrangements, I try for seasonal in the colours and different textures, I usually do not add specific holiday elements. It limits its duration of use.

I'm in a shorter season as well on Ontario, I only grow lavender for freshcflowers and dried. But I use natural grown elements. So you could do fall with thistles, branches, evergreen, cedar and cattails. As well as winter evergreen bouquets, we have also forced tulips and narcissis early for bouquets or potted arrangements. Good luck on your next year. I'm just starting myself. Did winter arrangements last year with our Xmas tree farm and this will be my first lavender season.

All great advice. You know your stuff in the business of farmers markets. At our markets, we are not the lowest price but we sell out every time. Basically doing what you are at the market. Maybe our family will see your market as we go thru Hood River to Portland out to the Oregon Coast every summer.

You are new to me, but i like how you think in terms of growing your own business! I m just begining on this path, its all knew to me, i have like a small backyard where i started, but i went for the first time to the market last weekend, but i felt disappointented! The flowers are sooo underpayed, unbelievable, i could charge as much as the equivalent of 4 $ per bouquet, a 15 stems one! You are so blessed where you are, because you see things difrent , i live in east Europe, people dont like to spend money on flowers, i hope i didnt took the wrong decision by starting this, because its so much work envolved, and it feels unappreciated.

Thank you for this video! I love your bouquets. I'm just getting started. I don't think I want to sell at our farmers market, but I think I would really enjoy a CSA. I want to make bigger, fuller bouquets like yours rather than smaller bunches... though I could do both, I suppose. I just feel like more is better! It's what I put in my own home. However, I also feel like everyone deserves to have flowers and be reminded that the world is full of beauty. Maybe having different price points would make that more accessible to everyone.

I hope it was helpful! As to favorite places to get seeds- I really love Johnny's too! They give so much information on the website, and I find the growing information especially helpful. I also love Floret for seeds, but they are a bit tough as a flower farmer because of the price point / packet. They aren't really as 'bulk' of an option. But great quality! I also use Botanical Interest and Renee's Garden. Oh and I haven't ordered from them before but I know a lot of people like GeoSeeds. Inexpensive, more of bulk qualities, but you've got to already be familiar with the seeds you're wanting and how to grow them. As far as courses, I've learned a lot from Team Flower. She's got an 'All Access' membership that will walk you through everything from contracts to how to make different style bouquets, to how to wrap and materials you'll need. Oh and her class on how to figure stem counts and be accurate with pricing. I recently discovered Fleur Society as well and they recently had a summit with a bunch of different floral designers in the community doing demos. That was really helpful! Lily Roden's classes are next on my list!

❤Loved your video!! It was very interesting! Your bouquets look gorgeous and overall the images you showed of your booth look professional and well done. I just found your channel and you seem like a wonderful person. I am contemplating starting a farmers market business, going to one or two markets a week. Here in Florida the market season is only Oct-Apr though. I’m so curious about storage of your bouquets prior to going to market. Do you keep them refrigerated? Do you provide flower food for your customers or suggest using that? In your opinion which flowers seem to be the most sturdy to last about a week? Love this! Thank you for making! I listened to the whole video but sometimes I miss things. My question is (I am thinking of doing some of my extra vegetables, flowers and fresh herb bundles. I would imagine after a few days, if flowers or herbs don't sell, they wilt and can't be sold. What do you do in this situation? Do you just factor in losses?

I went to my 1st farmer’s mkt meeting last night and when it comes to eggs, at least in our area, we have to rinse, candle and grade our eggs for sale. There’s a government website for the grading guideline.

I’ll be honest- In the beginning I really didn’t know! I figured I’d grow all that I could and hoped I’d figure it out! 🙈 I definitely had no idea how I wanted to wrap bouquets for the market, and I didn’t really have a personal style of arranging. I think it just takes a lot of practice over time to see what works for you. And really what you want to put out there. Every week was kind of a new challenge because different flowers would be blooming and others would be finishing up. Now I feel like I’ve got the market bouquet making down, but I’m really enjoying the arranging part. I’d like to do more than just make bouquets to wrap up for the market. I’ve definitely got some online courses I’d love to do on flower arranging in hopes of full service weddings in 2022. 🙈

Great video! So important to take into consideration the time it takes for everything from planting, growing, fertilizing, to arranging, to setting up, taking down, etc. I used to hear people say they made several hundred $'s at a farmers market & I'd think "dang, that's a lot for one day!" But I didn't consider the other things they did in a week. & like you said, even if you enjoy doing it you need to consider it in labor hours, because if you only count the harvesting and arranging time for example, and another flower farmer is doing this for their main income, they HAVE to consider that into their cost, or they'll NEVER make a profit/living and you'll be undercutting them.

Exactly. I think it's very easy to give away our time on hobbies. That's kind of the point right? But I think it can get a little mixed up when we start selling. In hindsight the time spent doesn't seem like it's worth as much as it truly is. I hope this video helps some growers to remember to value their work and time like their customers do! :)

I'm a little lost. You made $20k selling at the farmers market: *Was ALL of that $20k from flowers? *What was the actual PROFIT made (since expenses weren't already deducted from this number.)?
