In this video, I'm showing the different products that I use to prime coloring book pages before using watercolors and other water-soluble products.
I also do some demonstrations of how different waterbased art supplies react to different paper surfaces and then also the various different primed surfaces. I then give my opinion of which I think works best for which art supplies.
The surfaces tested are: plain coloring book paper, watercolor paper, a gritty clear gesso surface, a smooth clear gesso surface and a satin glazing fluid primed surface.
The supplies tested were Derwent Inktense Pencils, Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens, Derwent Procolour Pencils and Phthalo Blue Watercolor Paint.

Thank you for updating this medium test 😊 Hard to believe its been a whole year since since you did the Gesso/Watercolor Ground test... I tried the Gesso with extra tooth because thats all the supermarket art shop had, it worked but was far to scratchy for my liking...I will have to see if they have Satin Glaze now lol Thanks again for narrowing our search for the best undercoat to suit what we use 😃

I just wanted to come back and give you a sincere thank-you. One of your product recommendations has completely changed my relationship with watercolor in coloring books. Goldens Satin Glazing Liquid is Amazing! I was worried about using pencil over the top of my watercolor, but the surface that it makes is just wonderful for pencil to stick to. I literally cannot thank you enough, but I'm going to try. Thank you so much! You have made an activity that I thoroughly enjoy, so much more enjoyable.

The Art Spirits Just don’t use too much pressure when spreading it out. Squeeze a line of gesso along the width of the page and take the long side of the card to spread it out. The gesso is shiney so you can see where you missed. The gesso gathers at the bottom of the card allowing it to be spread easily. I am so grateful to you for the gesso and satin glaze idea. Works beautifully😊

Great video with needed info on using the Kuretake Zig Clean Color brush pens. I have had the 90 qty set for about a year, then recently got the 30 new colors released for 2021, and just saw the new 30 color set for 2022! I am much happier with 150 colors to play around with! Go Kuretake! BUT, the real reason I am writing is I found this clip by The Art Spirits to be very helpful in finding ways to use cool art mediums in the average coloring book with medium grade paper. I am very pleased to see testing of products that make ways to better use Inktense pencils, NeoColor 2 water pastels, and my favorite right now - the Clean Color brush pens. Thanks!!!

Great set of comparisons, thank you!! I wanted to share a trick for getting smooth coverage of any of these products. Spread on the page with whichever brush, card or spatula you prefer then roll a smooth bottle such as the satin glazing fluid bottle or a rolling pin over the paper a couple times and all the brush marks & ridges will smooth out to a perfectly flat surface. The gesso will still be gritty but will not have any ridges!!

Thank you, I enjoyed seeing your efforts and details which are very informative. I've done a variation based on Liquitex's absorbent ground recommendations. I make my own from the recommend formula by Liquitex. [ 3 parts gesso to 1 part gel paste ]. I find I can add a small amount of water [ less than 1 part water] to help spread the media smoothly if I don't want any texture. It always amazes me when just one single thin coating will do. - I sometimes will add a second coat, which gives the paper more stiffness. The coated paper seems to have many of the characteristics of Yupo paper.

Two years later I find this video as it came up in my feed after watching The Mind of Watercolour who suggested using colouring books to practise watercolour techniques on the paper as it is. I would never have thought of that as I have been quite disappointed by the result just from using ordinary coloured pencils that I did not want to risk using my more expensive pencils. So I ended up giving some of my better books away and using others as papers for mixed media. After watching that gentleman's video I was wondering if using Gesso or gluing another paper on the back of the page might work and then your video came up in my feed :-) Thank you so much for this really informative video. I loved that not only did you use different gesso/glaze makes but used different colouring mediums. All good info that has given me confidence to start using my books once again when I feel the need to do some relaxing art without having to think about what to draw first. Both videos have been safely saved to my YT Library to watch again. Am in awe of the way you and a few other Artists really do such a wonderful job adding colour to these books. So thank you for making and keeping this video up. You have a new Subbie from Lancashire.

Ok you are officially my HERO!!! I have tried Liquitex clear gesso, Daniel Smith watercolour ground and also Art Basics clear gesso and sadly ALL of them left brush marks and huge areas of spotty gritty patches. I even watered them down and tried to apply with a roller with the same results. Just horrible horrible. Then I saw you use something that I had not tried which was the Golden Satin Glazing liquid. AMAZING!!! NO brush marks, no gritty surface and it blended beautifully with my Tombow brush markers. I just started getting into colouring books and am a HUGE fan of Hanna Karlzon but sadly her drawing are printed on paper that is not water colour friendly. NOW I glaze my pages and then used my markers and it all blends beautifully. I know pencil crayons are all the rage for colouring but I am a rebel and love my Tombow markers. Thank you again for all the testing and videos you put out. I've learned lots and can't wait to seem more videos by you :)

This is great and a big thank you is in order. I don’t use coloring books however I made a massive purchase on Fabriano Artistico 640gsm watercolor paper before I knew the issues the mill was having. The paper isn’t the same anymore and I was stuck with 50 sheets (yes sheets 22” x 30”). From you video the satin glazing medium restore the watercolor paper into a useable surface so the paper didn’t go to waste along with the money I put into purchasing them. Thank you! And thank you to the lady whom you got the suggestion from.

This is a fantastic video, and thank you so much for sharing! At the moment, I am coloring in one of Johanna Basford's books using watercolor pencils, a water brush or small, but not tiny, brush. I have not been applying any prior preparation to the pages, but also just not using a ton of water to blend the colors. So far it is working great - no bleed-through and no buckling.
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 5 лет назад
Hi Richard. I do sometimes use watercolor pencils and I don't use a primer with those either. You can still use watercolor without primer but it does stain the paper rather fast. It's ok though, I wouldn't say you must use a primer but it does help with blending and manipulating the paint.

Why can't the manufacturers of the colouring books use better paper for all mediums as they must know that we all use different supplies depending on what effects we want to create. We pay enough for the books as it is don't we? Anyway, great video my friend, very informative.
@susansilva2097
@susansilva2097 6 лет назад
I sooooo agree with you Jane , so frustrating . Would prefer to pay a bit more and have quality paper.
@Tippel3
@Tippel3 6 лет назад
Paying enough? Ever bought a good mixed media paper? A colouring book would cost more than tripple as much. You can buy some colouring books with special artpaper, if you accept the same or a higher price for only 20% of the pages. J. Basford has such books for example. I agree to 100% that e.g. create space paper is something that simply hasn't to be used for a colouring book and it's the main reason why bennett klein's great books suck a lot. As a solution you can buy the newer books as a (pdf?)file and you can print it on every paper you like yourself and how often you want. I think thats actually the best solution for the problem. Colourbooks are usually meant to be coloured with dry or "overlay"media, it's ok if people choose to use them in a different way but therefore the books aren't a bad quality if they do and behave as they should. No colour pigment destroys or distress any paper, it's the fluid that will damage the paper. For that reason someone invented watercolourpaper. Also, what type of paper would the one to be chosen as the usual one? There is nothing I hate so much as watercolorpaper when it comes to this topic and I wouldn't spend any money, actually even much more money on such books. Why should I even need to pay more for something I don't need? Someone who uses markers wouldn't be able to use it at all. There is no paper that fits all types of media. No primer for acrylic or oilpaint on the world will make a watercolour paper out of surface, it's not even what gesso is meant to do. It does exactly the opposite and blocks water from going into the paper and therefore even alternates the colours and the way your medium behaves, best seen here on Inktense. Calling that acrylic primer out as "the best one to use for/with Inktense", because it changes the behaviour, use and basically eliminates all efforts of it, sounds just completely ridiculous to me.
@JaneMetcalfe
@JaneMetcalfe 6 лет назад
The methods shown by Rebecca work for her. I didn't mean to be disrespectful by mentioning the high price of colouring books. Each to their own I say. At least she is using what she is buying, I'd be putting it all in a drawer. Mind you, I have discovered a replacement ink for my Wink of Stella Brush pens so I'm really pleased about that..going off-topic there which is something I tend to do..a lot!
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 6 лет назад
That acrylic primer got the best results for inktense out of the products that I tried in the videos. I don't think you have really been listening properly to what I was saying. I've also stated many times in my videos that using gesso as a primer does not turn the paper into watercolor paper or make the paper act as good as a watercolor paper. I really don't think you got the point of this video which is trying to find ways of solving the problems we have when using wet media in coloring books, and as my title states, this video is about what I use in my books to overcome some of those challenges. There's really no need for you to be so aggressive towards people either. So maybe Jane didn't know the cost of mixed media paper. You could have explained your point in a more polite and friendly manner. You seem to have got yourself really worked up over it and there's no need for it.
@Tippel3
@Tippel3 6 лет назад
No, I wasn't agressive in any way! I think you got my lines wrong, happens sometimes when you can't hear the emphasis of a sentence. Maybe it happened also because my english isn't really the best (sorry) or because my culture is known to be as way more direct? But that's nothing to mistake as beeing rude or aggressive. I explained the problem to Jane regarding the usually used paper and the costs. Because, as you say, it seems that she isn't aware of it and don't know. Also I got a bit more into the problems that would also appear or simply change with other paper and what is the best solution in my eyes. You simply can't please all people with one type of paper because everyone and every medium needs a different type. I did not attack her. I know that you are showing and talking about things you tested and found out that work for you and share results and your oppinion with us. That's what RU-vid is meant for. And I did the same, I shared my oppinion about it. Because, for Inktense e.g., you didn't mention that the significant basic point from this medium and the common and usual reason to use it, gets completely lost. I think that's a really important information for newbies or people who just don't know.

I was telling you about gelatin, but you know there's another product I have not used. I've used watercolor ground but I've only used the titanium white, Perhaps the clear would be a good option. I should search to see if anyone has uses that on adult coloring books. The type I am familiar with is Daniel Smith and I think Dick Blicks or Jerry's is where I bought the opaque one. But it looks like you have a great response with the satin glazing fluid. I'll have to pick some up
@surveyguyor8958
@surveyguyor8958 3 года назад
one more thing. you were talking about not liking the brush marks. I saw someone using a plastic palette knife. but i have not used it. Perhaps it's "grounds" like watercolor grounds. and then it will always have a tooth. My experience is using brushes with grounds, i t makes lines because of the "bumps" I know this from applying compound on drywall. can't have any little hard flek or it will create a streak.
@surveyguyor8958
@surveyguyor8958 3 года назад
i did some tests of my own. in my imagimorphia. the gelatin and water was so much water it buckled the paper. I did it with thin watercolor grounds and it was about the same. so I mixed with water again (grounds) but mostly grounds, and went fast, and it did not buckle. I'll report on my findings.

Thank you, Rebecca, that video certainly is very informative. The Satin Glaze will never be my choice, as i love to use lots of water and do both wet-in-wet and layering. 😁 Besides, I have enough clear gesso to last a lifetime 😂😂😂 So far, I've never used it, but confined my water colours to books with water colour paper or at least very thick paper, as for example the artist edition of Draconis (Pictura) by John Howe. That paper took the water well, got a bit wavy, but not much. And I used lots of water 😉 Thanks again for sharing you knowledge with us, zi always enjoy your videos.

Thanks very much. This is a great review. I actually liked the result of the gritty gesso with the paint best. But I definitely need some of the satin glazing fluid to use with my Tombow waterbased markers and I'm intrigued to try the Art Basics gesso with coloured pencil. Have you tried layering pencils on it? Can it take additional layers? Thanks again. Sorry to create more work for you!
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 6 лет назад
Hi Sue, no problem at all. I've just done a little layer test and got excellent results. I wish I had thought of doing that test in the video. I layed down lighter colours first so that I was able to see the layers better. Started with yellow, then orange, lilac, blue, brown then lastly, black. All colours went down really well and I only stopped at black because I wouldn't be able to see another colour over it. So that's 6 layers and I could have added more if I could have seen them. Also, I wasn't even pressing too hard. So that was the derwent procolours. I did the same test with the prismacolors and got the same excellent results. So it seems like you can layer well with both harder and softer pencils too. 🎨😁
@suewilkinson910
@suewilkinson910 6 лет назад
That's great news. I have a few pages prepared now with Art Basics Gesso and the Satin Glazing Liquid. But this weekend I've had a few sessions trying to clear off part-finished pictures and managed to close a few off. Not starting more until I've finished the languishing ones! These included 2 pictures that I had prepared with the Windsor & Newton gesso. I used Neocolor II straight from the crayon to the brush for that one. It's too rough to apply markers or the Neocolors direct. I really dislike the feeling of it. So much like sand paper. But I have better hopes for the Art Basics. I applied that with a credit card and got a perfectly smooth surface that way. Experimenting is fun.
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 6 лет назад
That's great to hear about the credit card trick, Sue. I need to try it next time I use the art basics. Those brush lines were the only problem I came across so it should be great with those eliminated. They were particularly visable with the prismacolors and the procolours seemed to cover them up. Anyhow, you won't need to worry about those 🎨😀

What coloring book is the one with the picture of the orange shell with fairies on top ? It’s so cute! I need it

Hi Kat, it's called Magical Delights by Klara Markova. It's divine. This was her first book and she has 5 out now. Only drawback is that you can only really get them from Etsy and they're quite pricey.

This maybe a dumb question but does using something like gesso to prep the paper prevent it from wrinkling like mine always seem to (even on thick paper).
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 6 лет назад
Hi Amy, yes it does stop it wrinkling with the water. I do use at least 2 layers though. I'm not sure 1 layer would be enough for that.

With the clear gesso for colored pencils, (I'm sorry if this was answered and I didn't catch it), but would using it on createspace paper make it easier to use softer pencils on it? Thank you, and thank you for the good video!

Hi Meredith. I've only done a small test the prismacolor pencils on the art basics gesso. It seemed to work really well. It wasn't create space paper, it was the Jade summer paper but I don't really think it would make a difference what paper it was used on as it's just creating a whole new surface.😁🎨

Do you know if the Golden glaze is non toxic? Does it have a smell? It looks wonderful, thanks so much for this video
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 4 года назад
Hi Jen. the bottle say it has no known health hazards associated with anticipated use but most chemicals are not fully tested for chronic toxicity. It does have an odour but not strong. It doesn't seem to send an odour into the air but you can smell it when you stick your nose over the bottle and it's a bit like PVA glue.

Hi, I bought the golden satin glazing liquid, for my zig markers, but I've never worked with such a thing. How long does such a thing have to be dry before you can use it with your zig markers. finds it quite exciting. hopefully this is fine.

Hi Miranda. I dry mine with a hair dryer and then use it as soon as it feels completely dry. I do 2 layers, make sure the first is dry before I put the second one down.

When you say clear gesso for coloring pencils and the smooth satin for watercolors, do watercolor pencils fall under the coloring pencils category or under watercolors please?
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 5 лет назад
Hi Yanica. I consider them watercolors and use the satin glazing fluid.

I really like your workspace! Can you tell me what it is and where I might find it? Thanks

Hi, yes, no problem. It's contact paper that I stuck on the desk. I got it from eBay. If you type in the eBay search 'stars contact paper' you should see it come up near the top of the results. 😀

The problem of such medium is the 2 coat! What Do you think which tooks the 2 coat Best? Without lifting the previous layer.... Thank you!
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 6 лет назад
Hi, you can do 2 coats with either of these, you just need to let the first dry fully before applying the second coat.

Hi , do you use gesso ou glazing satin for each pages of coloring book. And when i try to do it ( only in creative haven book) the paper become i don't know how to say in English but with wave even if I put the book with heavy book on it. I'd like some advice who could help me. Best regards.
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 6 лет назад
Hi. It's best to paint a very thin layer and then dry it quickly with a hair dryer. Then add another very thin layer and quickly dry that too. If you add a thick layer, the water will soak into the paper and make it swell which is why it goes wavy. Hope this helps 😁

merci beaucoup pour vos vidéo...j’ai de la difficulté à comprendre l’anglais...pour les crayons inktense vous conseiller quoi? Si vous me comprenez merci..

Gesso is made to prevent paint from soaking into surfaces. If you would have just looked up the definition you could have saved some money.
