So can mechanical engineering work well with fighter jets and military equipment? Also if you OWN an areospace business how would that affect the amount of work you do? (Okay long witted story time) I'm getting ready go to John a logan college in Carterville IL...it's a community college and my 2 major picks was criminal justice and engineering, I wanted todo aerospace engineering but they didn't offer it so I went with mechanical engineering...my hope is to own a aerospace business (like Lockheed Martin) in Louisiana and design fighter jets and maybe be a part time cop in the town I'm in. As my advisor said both those are totally different things but the law enforcement trade is dying...people in America HATE law and order...in fact the state I'm currently in (Illinois) made a law called no cash bail which eliminates getting bailed out of jail and bail hearings, well cops can't arrest you if you can't have a bail herring so most cops are moving to different states. But yet we see wars in every country around us, you need fighter jets, missiles, machine guns, tanks and naval ships to be able to defend a country so I thought bout engineering and making these fine machines that keep our countries safe.

I've had a different experience. Have worked for two young companies since graduation, the last being a new start company. Both businesses were run in a manner of chaos, have been told to sit in the corner and use SolidWorks and create purchase orders only...in both positions. Have attended several interviews since then , however all of them seem to be the same. Toxic people and office politics! It's a disheartening and demoralizing career.

Although not a mechanical engineer, I think there are some great points here. I used to work for a small manufacturing plant as a CAD Tech directly under the engineering manager. The Engineering manager was a jack of all trades. I don't know exactly what his degree was in, but he did alot. Also I worked alot with the Manufacturing engineer who had a degree in Industrial Engineering. I was given quite a bot of responsibility and "creative freedom" so to speak. Because the engineering department consisted of just is three, I often found myself with tasks that exceeded my expectations about my scope of work. I had design, prototyping, CNC machine, time study, database, tech manual, visual marketing and other duties to name a few. I learned alot from that job. Thanks for this video.

Sounds like any trade . It usually takes about 3 years to get certified in a trade . You now have permission to work at the trade . But you can not really be considered a tradesman . That will take another 5 years of experience in the trade to learn the tricks of the trade . Simplifying things and putting that simplification down to an even simpler rule of thumb . Doing such you will then waste no movements . Found the best strategy to start in trade projects is to go at it a little hard at the start and then you can coast towards the end . This is good for when mistakes are made, you are not hard pressed to fix them

What are you talking about you can get paid 64,000-160,000 depending on what type of job you acquire. It’s mainly just experience and working in the same company that can earn you more money and net income. With time you will get promotions and new opportunities to increase your income as well. But you can’t just expect to be making 100,000 dollars off rip that’s not realistic. Also I want to add that you have to like math and physics to become an engineer because it’s a very demanding career overall so I would assess if your doing engineering for the money or because you actually like it. I hope your doing better 2 months later have a nice life.

In my nearly 40 years as an ME, the one thing I wish I had known was that everyone will think you drive trains, change oil on cars or fix photocopiers! This is highly offensive to me. Does a Nurse get to call him/herself a doctor or surgeon? Is a law clerk a lawyer? I don't think so. Engineering should be a highly regarded profession. In my native UK this was not the case.. I mean people get killed if an engineer makes a big enough mistake. Its better where I live now in the USA which is why I left.. Plus they pay more money..:)

Love your video...do mechanical engineering require you going to the factory and moving your machine
@theannareich
@theannareich Год назад
Glad to hear you liked it! :) It really depends on the specific position how close you work with machines. For my bachelor studies, I did have to do a factory internship where I learned how to do metal work - and now in my job I travel to our factory a lot and make sure my equipment is installed correctly and works fine, so I do need to know how to operate it to be able to test it and teach others how to use it. But the day-to-day operation of the equipment is done by the "machine operators".

Hi Anna you probably won't see this comment but I'm in the Army right now deployed in Iraq and with a completely different field as my job (Combat Medic) and straight from high school. I want a career in Mechanical Engineering because I want to start a company in the future and repair/install or create devices that help people with common tasks and their daily life in general and to possibly create cool gadgets like superhero type stuff lol. I have ignored education during high-school because I thought I'd never need some topics like math or physics because I'd enter the workforce as an EMT or Paramedic but my goals in life have changed. I like helping people but I don't see myself doing this type of work for the rest of my life. I'm a very curious person about the world and how it works and have never believed I was smart enough to be an engineer or just in general using my knowledge to sustain myself. I know I can attain anything as long as I study extensively and I hope to reach your levels of knowledge, I think your videos are pretty cool and hope to see more about Mechanical Engineering and maybe a few videos of you making your own personal project would be really neat! Alright I'm too excited to get back home and start my journey to become an engineer😂. Thank you for your videos they're very informative, Ignore any potential haters and keep up the great work👷‍♀️😎

@user-my8ll6lw4q Год назад
I feel like we are in similar situations haha Having different dreams and passions that feel like they would take up each others' times alot. Although I am probably on the other side of the moral compass, I prefer the criminal justice that is restorative justice and a society where money (and thus status) means very little in the justice system. I'm not that into law but it's crazy that having no cash bail would mean cops can't arrest people. And while I despise wars considering the number of stupid reasons people start them without proper communication or negotiation, I understand your desire to protect your home and the people you love. Meche to me means projects and machinery that helps improve the lives of people in need or impoverished neighborhoods, for example I live in Philly, with gun crime and poverty at an all-time high, it would be great if I could design or engineer products that help the environment for neglected neighborhoods in my city. Some neighborhoods are littered with trash and others are with homeless people. Engineering a better system to manage our waste and trash would certainly help my city and more community centers that deal with mental and emotional health as well as tighter gun control laws that flush out the unfit people. Ngl sometimes I blame capitalism for all the issues in my city. Everyone is so concerned with earning a living and working many of hours every week to support themselves that they neglect themselves or they're so down with hopelessness that they turn to drugs or nicotine to satisfy their misery. It just feels like the city doesn't care about its people and the only ones that actually care are the masses.

I live in the east coast, so there aren’t a lot of startups for ME here but even if there were I would never work for them specially during/out of college. I’ve been poor my entire life, so the idea of sacrificing money that could meaningfully change my life to work at a potentially exploitative place that’s going to pay less. I graduated this year and I make somewhere around the starting salary for a big company in my area doing dogsh1t accountant work, and I can still barely pay my bills along with the money I owe. I can now see why they say internships are for rich kids, ‘cause only they can afford to take them.

@theannareich 2 года назад
Hi Adriano! Thank you for you kind comment :) I certainly put a lot of hours into studying for my math exams, hard to say how many and this really depends on the difficulty of the exam. Make a study plan at the start of the course to study consistently each week and over time you will figure out if you need to put in more hours to learn the material you were supposed to learn that week or if it's enough to understand & remember everything. The most effective way of studying for math I found was to solve as many mock exams and example problems as possible (always practice the same way you will have to recall the material in the exams) Best of luck! :)

@@brandonh5201 Not really, for me the easiest way to learn Calculus is to just grind the Worksheets and write down the formulas and steps (it's basically a math recipe) for each set of problems. The best thing to know is what the formula does or when you can use it or not (exceptions/assumptions made). The Lectures never really helped me learn anything, but Worksheets and old exams were my way to pass calculus.

Hey! just saw ur vid and it is indeed interesting .. i m actually a student and an going to start my college for a btech in mechanical engg but i m having a few queries .. firstly i m aiming for masters in aerospace and a job in the same field so is mechanical a relevent field for btech ?? and does it have anything to do with a lot of physical strength ??? I hope u answer as i m still searching and not really sure about my option for btech ..

Mechanical engineering is indeed related to aerospace engineering, they are based on the same principles and I think you should be able to do an aerospace master after a mechanical engineering bachelor without problem - but it's always best to check this with the university. Often they will have the entry requirements for their master's programs on their website or you can email them to find out. By physical strength do you mean whether you yourself need to be physically strong? If so, the answer is absolutely not, mechanical engineering has nothing to do with physical labor :)

Hello Mam hope you are doing well . Can you please guide me which field od mechanical engineering is best ? Automation engineering or industrial engineering I am really confuse 🥹
@theannareich
@theannareich Год назад
That's impossible to answer definitively without getting a bunch of people mad at me :D But generally the difference between the two fields is that automation is about automating processes that were previously done manually by humans, so it's related to production machines, robots, software programming, controls, etc. Industrial engineering is not really a specific type of engineering but the interface between engineering and business, so you will both learn about different types of engineering (usually with a focus on mechanical engineering) and about business knowledge (e.g. accounting, management, administration, business development, sales etc.). So it depends on whether you want to go deeper into engineering or learn a mix of business & engineering on a medium-deep level. Personally, I feel like it's easier to teach yourself the business knowledge than to teach yourself deeper engineering knowledge if you later realise that you are lacking some knowledge but both degrees should provide good career opportunities and the basic knowledge you need to work as an engineer.

not tough mathematical equations? differential equations beg to differ. 0.3% are engineers, now if engineering is a good job with good income then why alot of people get filtered, granted everyone can understanding math but there is only 24h in a day and uni pace is faster than a raptor jet from spacex. engineering is hard Especially mechanical and electrical engineering. just a heads up, if you can't study 8 hours a day every single day then you are in a tough ride, unless you are gifted with a high IQ or passed your high school with max grades in math physics and chimistry because you are gonna need that in uni.

@@theannareich What's the locus of a point at a fixed distance from a center? That's a circle. A locus of a point is simply the different locations this point can be at when it satisfies a given property. In the above example, the point was at a fixed distance from a center, let this center be O, and let M be our beloved point. The property is simply OM=d for some d fixed, make it one, say OM=1. This means that M lives on a circle of center O and radius 1. It means also that if I try to grab M and move it around, the only places it can reach are seats on that circle. So, again, the locus of a point are the places a point can be at while satisfying a given property. So returning to your enemy, the root locus. Think about the words, "root" "locus", it is all the places a root can be at, or all the roots can be at when they satisfy a given relationship. What is this relationship? It is just some polynomial equaling to zero (which is the denominator of the transfer function). Let this polynomial be P(s), and for the sake of clarity let us throw a one around. Let P(s)=s^2+3+(s+4)*k such that k is variable. We get now our needed relationship, by setting P(s) to zero, s^2+3+(s+4)*k=0. Now, put k=0 and solve for s, you get the first set of roots, plot them. Set k=1, solve for s, plot the new roots. Set k=0.9876, solve for s, plot the new roots. Theoretically, you do this for all k, and then taraaa you get a plot that is the places of all the roots of this polynomial by varying k. In the previous example, it was more of a word problem and the varying parameter was not obvious( the circle example), but you can somehow transfer the problem into some parameterized form, when OM=1, and vary the angle, which is theta, our parameter, to get the circle. This method is more explicit. This was what we have done in the root locus thing. The parameter k was explicit, and we just needed to plug all the values it can take so that we can find all the places the roots can be at.

@@theannareich This is what a root locus is, still haven't talked about how to use it or why it is useful, but at least get to meet it initially, become friends, understand what it is. Usefulness comes later.

@@theannareich Maybe not the root locus specifically. Carrying around the idea of varying a parameter and plotting a graph is useful, I don't know how much you might need this, but you're surviving without it so yeah :p

Hi! I've made a whole video on "do engineers need to be good at math?" where I go into more detail. But to put it shortly, you need quite a bit of math to get through engineering school (calculus, linear algebra, differential equations) but after graduating, you have the option to go into engineering jobs with very high or very low math intensity. Good luck!
