I was in therapy for 2 years before I got surgery and have been consistently since and im 1 year post op now. When you said “I thought loosing the weight would fix my problems and insecurities” I resonated with that sooo much😭 I always thought my weight held me back, granted Ive gained confidence and so much from this experience but im still unhappy at times. Im not completely comfortable in my body. The unnecessary comments from other people about my body get to me even though they shouldnt. And I still struggle with body dysmorphia a lil bit. The weightloss definitely did not fix everything but I think because im self aware and regularly speak to my therapist, its allowed me to keep a clear head and not self sabotage or fall back into old habits.

I am getting ready to go to my one year post-op appt today. I would agree that "what" to eat is one of the most difficult parts of this journey. Personally i did not really exercise regularly. Even though i have lost 100 pounds, i didnt even try to exercise because i had the old body mentality. I assumed my body wouldnt cooperate. What a surprise when i went into the gym and was able to exercise with relative ease. A lighter body does move easier. Thanks for the honest videos.

You always create great content. I watch your videos over and over. I had my vsg surgery this past Friday 6/7/24. Everything you share is much needed and greatly appreciated!

I truly get what you’re saying I’ve been really happy with my weightloss but lately I’ve been struggling mentally , I have started feeling unhappy and worried about weight gain I have gained 5 lb and I’m only just over a year out and I’m really worried that I’m going to put it all back on! I eat slider foods because it’s easier than eating meals , I got down to 130 lb and everyone told me I looked ill now I am 138 and everyone says I need to gain more but I preferred being smaller, I am not eating enough protien or drinking enough water! My head is still in that mode of eating what I crave and want rather than what’s good for me ! I eat under a 1000 calories a day but there not necessarily good calories the struggle is real and no one really understands ❤

Yea I can definitely understand and relate to all of this! Ignore anyone telling you to gain weight and only focus on yourself and how you feel / how you want to look. When it comes to food you’re human so it’s normal to not always make the “right choices” give yourself grace you’re doing a great job 💕

I have to agree with your list. I'm still trying to lose the scale weight, but my body composition has really changed. I kept working out as I had before my surgery. I took progress pictures and it really is quite shocking to see the difference from the beginning to now. My trainer says the scale weight will eventually change. I haven't had a follow up appt in a year because I moved shortly after my surgery due to a job transfer. So, its been me doing this by myself for a year. I'm try to arrange a follow up in August to see my surgeon. It's very expensive to fly back, but the surgeon office called and really want to follow up. Im very thankful for that. Its absolutely true that no other medical facility wants to see you if you are not their original patient. I really appreciate walking thru this with you.

I would ask about the water. I have researched most people struggle with getting liquids down as far as water. First and second week post op it’s important to get your water intake in as well as trying to meet the protein goal. I learned that Alkaline water helps even when you were accustomed to your fav brand water. You will go through a trial and error figuring out what your sleeve/new stomach will like

I the thing I would do differently is take a nutrition class. I would not buy any clothes as well. I'm 1.6 years out. I going to find a therapist and a support group ❤ Thanks Karen, I'm in the Bronx, NY. 22:09

I agree with everything you said especially the clothing haul and learning how to eat. I am 2 years out as well and I just enlisted the help of a bariatric nutritionist that I have been following on IG of awhile. She's amazing and now I'm in another phase of eating to change my body composition b/c of her.

Dietitiankate I was hesitant to spend the $ so I only bought 1 session. She is worth it and I wound up booking more.

@ladypgEEEOOOW may I ask what was helpfulness 1 session and how long are the sessions? I'm looking for a Bari dietician as well! 1yr 2 mos post op

So she listened to me. Took into consideration so many factors. Gave me a sample 3 day meal plan, which was much more food than I was eating in one meal. I released control and lost 3 lbs that 1st week. I was like this woman knows her ish. So I booked a 3 pack of sessions. 2nd session we made some tweaks b/c I'm having an arm life in 29 days and I am trying to lose 7lbs. She does not rush her sessions. She's so knowledgeable about bariatric supplements as well. She's really teaching how to fuel my body and not be scared to eat.

What type of therapist are we looking for? Someone who can help with this process or a normal therapist?

I ask as my Dr was a horrible Dr and no follow up. I've done 1yr 2mos on my own post vsg.

I personally went for a normal therapist just because my issues are wayyyy deeper than just my weight so I needed someone who could help me with all of me. But there are also people who focus on bariatric patients. So it would depend on what you feel like you need the most help with.

There are therapists that specialize in weight issues. It is a challenge to find one that is covered by insurance. I went to one that was associated with the bariatric program i used for surgery and dietary. To be honest, i was only with her for 6 months, and then i felt like i had outgrown the need for her. That is when i went back to a general therapist. As Karen said, the weight/ eating issues that you had before surgery are a symptom of how you feel about yourself, and you can process that with a general behavior therapist. Dont be overly concerned about someone who specializes in bariatrics. But do go see SOMEONE for mental health support.
