What if IRAN wasn't Muslim, but ZOROASTRIAN?

What Why How

Today, Iran is a Muslim theocracy. But what if the Arab armies never conquered Iran in the 600s? For one, Iran would still mostly practice Zoroastrianism. What would this alternate history Persia be like? This video covers the history of Zoroastrian Iran until the modern day. It covers the culture, religion, politics, and economy of a Persia which never fully adopted Islam, instead sticking to the ancient Zoroastrian faith.

Lol how? Iranians under Islam established some of the greatest empires and civilizations in the world. The Persian language had a profound impact on the culture and language of the regions of central and South Asia and it could be found even today. Some of the greatest scholars and scientists in Islamic Iran include ibn sina, imam gazali, Omar khayyam , imam Bukhari etc. This is something which was unfound in pre Islamic Iran. @@nimaj53The Parsi community's migration to India traces back to the 8th century when they sought refuge from religious persecution in Iran during the Islamic invasion. Upon their arrival in India, they were graciously welcomed by the Hindu king of Gujarat. It's important to note that not all Zoroastrians who migrated to India from Iran are referred to as Parsis; rather, only those who settled in Gujarat are known by that term. Over the centuries, the Parsis have become renowned for their contributions to various sectors in India, including business, industry, arts, and philanthropy. Notable figures like Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of India's nuclear program, and the Tata family, owners of the Tata Group, have emerged from the Parsi community. Today, the Parsis are recognized as one of the wealthiest and most charitable communities in India, leaving a profound and lasting impact on the country's social, cultural, and economic landscape.

I have to say that a Zoroastrian Iran would have a MAJOR influence in the Muslim World for several reasons: 1. Persian culture and philosophy heavily influenced Islam. Without Iran, it's likely contact with India would be less, and hence, entire fields like mathematics would not have developed the way they did in our timeline. 2. Iran and Afghanistan were the basis for the Abbasid Dynasty, which later conquered the Ummayads in the 8th century and promoted the Golden Age of Islam. Without the Abbasids, the Ummayads might have survived, meaning the Arab World would be far less intellectually developed, a lot poorer, and far less relevant. Incursions into Europe will never happen due to Ummayad instability at the Byzantine's borders, and also due to massive revolts in North Africa and Iberia led by dissenting Muslim sects called the Kharijites, who HATED the Ummayads. In this timeline, and thanks to Kharijism, Iberia would remain Muslim since the areas under Kharijite rule (like Algeria) experienced mass conversions, which were discouraged by the Ummayads, who later ruled Iberia. 3. No Ummayad rule in Iberia would mean a more stable and more Muslim Kharijite south, as well as a stronger Christian North. I doupt, however, that either would conquer the other, instead remaining separate entities to this day and fighting over central Iberia. 4. With the Mongol conquest (if it happened at all since Gengis Khan invaded Iran due to a Khwaresmian provocation), the Muslims in the West would have also been anhiliated, with only Kharijite North Africa and Iberia surviving. 5. No Abbasids means no Turkic migration because there wouldn't have been a Battle of Talas. This means the Chinese and Buddhism would still be influential in Central Asia and among Turkic peoples. This also means that the Byzantines would survive since there would be no Turkic migration into Anatolia.

Kuro Azrem, that is a fine analysis, but like the original video there is are things not accounted for. Like - would the Byzantine Empire now be weaker or stronger? This has huge impacts on western societies too. And let's not forget butterfly effects an wildcards. Persian Zoroastrianism wouldn't have to remain untouched by time either. Different rulers and dynasties might emerge; Turkish-Zoroastrian or even further spread of Buddhism doesn't sound tofsfh

1- Persian philosophy didn't heavily influence Islam( Islam would still thrive) 2- the arab world would still be rich and intellectually developed ( no one depended on the Persians, and most science/literature was made in Bagdad or translated from Greek books) 3- Iran would be intellectually deprived of Islams/Arab discoveries and science therefore a poorer weaker country

Muslim mosques are designed based on Mazgats( Mazgat or Mazdagata that means the place of Ahuramazda), a specific fire temple with domes and burning fires under the dome, in many muslim mosques you still can find Minarah that basically means fireplace. Even the Mihrab that is a place that a muslim priest stands to pray and determines the direction of Qiblah is like Mehrab in fire temples that determines the direction of sun and Zoroastrian priests put the holy fire there and stand to pray beacuase in Zoroastrian religion the direction of praying should be toward light and Mehr in Persian means light. Some scholars says Ab was Hap or Ap that means honouring in Avestan so Mehrab means honouring the light but other scholars believe Ab here is changed from Av and Ave that means a room and a place built in the form of a dome and Mehrab means the place of praying toward Mehr and because after Islam new muslim Iranians used Iranian architecture to build their mosques, they built all mosques in the form of domes and they made the part of standing the priest a half-dome and called it Mihrab. You should read more about Iranian architecture and its influence on Islam to get a deeper understanding of it.

How expansionist is Zoroastrianism? Christianity and Islam generally tell followers to convert other nations which often served as a casus belli for invasions or colonization. If Zoroastrianism isn’t like that then it’s possible that we would have a Zoroastrian heartland in Iran with significant minorities in surrounding areas. A strong Persian Empire that isn’t Muslim might also check Arabization into Central Asia and India. It’s even possible without a good sea base the Muslim traders might not have been significantly powerful enough to spread it to Southeast Asia.

In a short time many kings took power and dethroned. but it would eventually be solved as before if there wasn't that bad timing of arab invasion for Iran. There was a guy named Atila Hun (similar to Genghis Khan) at time of Sassanids (not bad timing one) and couldn't do anything. they changed their route to Europe and Rome and terrorized them. If Iran didn't defeat to arab muslims. Iran would regained it's stability and would pushed back arab muslims to the deserts of arabia. Iran would be one of the top countries in military, science, economy, ... as before. At the time of Pahlavi dynasty, Iran was on the path to be one of the top 3 countries in the world in economy, ... but western governers like carter had devil plans and cause the Dark 1979 islamic so--called revolution and .... But todays lots of Iranians are leaving islam because they know and feel in every day of their life that islam is the cause of these dark ages of Iran.

IMO I think it would be interesting if the Arab caliphate would redirect it's focus from Iran and into Anatolia, so we get the Greeks absorbed into Islamic culture instead of the Persians and Islam is seen as more of a Western focused region. I'd also imagine there could be a larger Manichean influence in Iran, perhaps one of the Central Asian khanates that conquers them follows that religion and attempts to spread it there.

I think Zoroastrian would’ve probably had some Europe mentality like the crusaders and us vs them homogeneous culture. And many don’t know this but before the Arab conquest the Azeri were Persian speakers azer literally means fire in Zoroastrianism. The Arabs forced them into forgetting there true language so they would’ve forget there Persian language. And give them Turkic slave which was popular slave trade in Muslim world for mentality. If this conquest ever didn’t happen I do believe Iran would’ve been even expanded into the caucuses region. And with the crusades against Muslim and Buddhist they would grab some part of Iraq and forced them into Zoroastrianism just like Spain in Europe. And in 1700 because of Russian conquest of Central Asia there would been alliance formed between Zoroastrianism and Russians Which would’ve led into another manifest destiny for both of those nation and some sorta way a “indo-European alliance” Which would’ve saw the Buddhist as almost as like the natives in the America’s which would’ve forced them out of Central Asia. And we could’ve sawn this century Russia even expanding into east china and diminishing the Asian sphere of influence in Central Asia. And with Pakistan and Afghanistan and Tajikistan and some part of Uzbekistan and Azeris I do believe because of there culture similarities this regions would’ve been a majority Zoroastrian. But in this 1700 there would be probably wars between russia and the Zoroastrian which would eventually after centuries of war came out as stalemate. Because of high population of both sides and high technology which would’ve slow down both sides advancement. And because of how the Zoroastrian were ahead of there time they would’ve probably been the first in 2000s to have space federation. Which would later follow up with the European countries Muslims and Asians. To describe the Zoroastrian they would’ve probably been the Spanish of space. But with recent revival of Zoroastrian which is now spreading in Iran and the turning of Iran into full Persian. Country and spread of Zoroastrian in Tajikistan I think we’re gonna dramatically see Iran changing there script of language and religion which would start a major war in bid of Islam to keep them in there sphere.

I feel like a Byzantine persian alliance would become more normal but by the mongol conquests, i can't say, although i think you're right without persia directly linking islam to the rest of central asia any proceeding caliphate would not be stong enough to completely defeat combined Persian Byzantine assaults (although i don't they would find much success either as egyt and indian trade would stil be alive and well) in the end i think this just means anatolia might remain more Greek Christian but with many turkish warlords and people who would both be Christian and Muslim and iran more persian with still some Islamic influence. But also i feel like Russian Orthodoxy might take the the place of islam in many parts of central Asia as there are records showing of Christian communities living in the area prior to islam existing but also zoroastrianism in there too

People need to stop talking about Zoroastrianism. Nobody on this thread even knows what it is, or why the Sasanian Empire fell in Iran in the first place. The Zoroastrian clergy were brutal.
@arman_1024

They fell because of the plague and the devastating war against the byzantines. The Arabs were affected by neither. You don’t know what you’re talking about.
@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 22 дня назад
@@arman_1024 That would be you actually. In addition to your primitive commentary, the fall also happened because of the impact of Mazdak's death and civil war. The Parthians wanted out of the empire once they saw the decadence of the Sasanians and thus split the wealth of the empire. It was not just the plague of Sheroe or the war against the Romans. People were leaving Zoroastrianism in droves (Salman Farsi was a huge reason the Arabs won key battles - he was Persian and a Muslim convert). Reductive analysis is not good - with so many succession battles, Yazdgerd III was 8 when he took the throne. Bahman Jaduya was literally refusing to take his orders.
@arman_1024
@arman_1024 22 дня назад
@@ciaronsmith4995 kiddo, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Saying the Parthian’s wanted to leave is such a ridiculous statement. Just like with the Byzantine empire, it was mostly due to the Plague and the recent war, none of which affected Arabia. On top of that, Arabia was going through a population increase with very strained resources, which encouraged outward expansion. Yes, the civil wars also contributed to their fall, but none of that his is related to the fall of Zoroastrianism. Mazdak wasn’t even a real person, which goes to show how unread you are on the Sassanid empire.
@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 22 дня назад
@@arman_1024 Utterly incorrect like everything else you typed - read this: "The Sasanian civil war of 628-632, also known as the Sasanian Interregnum was a conflict that broke out after the execution of the Sasanian king Khosrow II between the nobles of different factions, notably the Parthian (Pahlav) faction, the Persian (Parsig) faction, the Nimruzi faction, and the faction of general Shahrbaraz. Rapid turnover of rulers and increasing provincial landholder power further diminished the empire. Over a period of four years and fourteen successive kings, the Sasanian Empire weakened considerably, and the power of the central authority passed into the hands of its generals, contributing to its fall." The Persians and the Parthians went to civil war - the Parthians wanted to split their wealth and either re-take control or leave. Separately, Mazdak was a very real person and his death only demoralized the empire. It was a series of things in succession, not just one or two things, that brought down Iran at that time.
@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 22 дня назад
@@arman_1024 The Parthians absolutely wanted to leave or re-take power. Read about the Sasanian Interegnum or the Sasanian Civil War of 628-632 for your own edification and to learn about Iranian history. The Parthians and the Persians went to civil war, in this instance, against each other and the Parthians wanted to split their wealth. Not to mention Mazdak was a very real person and his followers were called "Mazdakites". Even if he didn't exist, it wouldn't change the fact Kavad led a communist revolt during this time pushing for women to be "openly shared with men - communal intercourse". Iran fell for multiple reasons, not just a few. There were 2 plagues - first the plague of Sheroe from 627-628 which preceded civil war, and then one plague during the time of Yazdgerd that was after the civil war. I repeat - during this period Zoroastrianism was losing members in droves. Not saying Islam was better, but Zoroastrianism was dying very quickly and the clergy's behavior during civil war and towards Mazdak, lowered public perception of the faith.

I think you underestimate the British interest in Iran, not for their own benefit, but because if Russia controlled the whole thing it would have a warm water port, which would massively affect the balance of power. I think you underestimate the degree to which muslim subjugation affected Zoroastrianism, and I believe that even if it wasn't wholly missionary, it would likely still have a significant missionary wing. This would shape relationships with Buddhism, where in the east you would probably have fewer buddhists than you suspect, and also large communities in Hindustan and Avaganistan. Where they do overlap you likely have higher levels of tension, with the exception that some regions may have something like a survival of Zurvanism which syncretises the two of them. As a result, they would have less in common with China than you suggest, especially since the Chinese don't identify with religion in the way that westerners do. Others have mentioned that the Zoroastrians are famously trustworthy and industrious, which might lead to a more prosperous and stable Iran. While these traits have ancient heritage, so that even Herodotus mentions their honesty, my guess is that they became particularly concentrated due to the pressures of trying to maintain an ethnoreligious community in the face of significant external pressures. Therefore I think that this Iran might well be better off, it would not be quite so well as others have suggested.
