What would it look like if the Austronesian world united as a single mega country? In today's alternate history scenario, we will be discussing some of the history of the Austronesians, their relation to each other and outsiders and what a united Austronesia would look like.
The Austronesians are one of the most fascinating ethnolinguistic groups on the planet, having been one of the few groups to truly conquer the seas and surrounding islands and thus inhabiting a huge segment of the Earth, settling around and intermixing with groups from all over the world, and through trade, migration and colonization, many more people groups who would've otherwise never been in contact have also settled and dispersed into Austronesian territory. Thanks for watching!

While some use "FatherLAND", "MotherLAND" or "HomeLAND" to refer to their native land, the Malay-Indonesian word for the term is "Tanah Air" which literally translates to "WATER LAND" (Tanah = Land + Air = Water). The word clearly describe the Malay/Austronesian as the people who dominate and build civilization not only on land but also on water. Hence, they are the masters of the land and seas.

I am born and raised in the UK but i am a native visayan (Bohol island) from the Philippines. It just amazes me how my austronesian people have sailed as far west to Africa (Madagascar) all the way east to Easter Island (Rapa Nui). Living in London we don't have the sea but whenever I get a chance to go to the seaside or in fact, any body of water I have always had a strong connection to it. I guess it's within my genes to have an affinity to water and the sea.

“Great seafarer and a coconut worshipper” Salute from Indonesia 🇮🇩
@agachess
@agachess 3 года назад
In the Tagalog Mythology, there were only three primordial deities in the beginning of time. They were Bathala (the creator), Ulilang Kaluluwa (the serpent-god), and Galang Kaluluwa (the winged-god). All of them thought they were the only one who existed in the universe. Ulilang Kaluluwa, who lived in the skies, claimed himself as the ruler. It was until he saw Bathala on earth, and asked him who he was. Bathala responded, "I'm Bathala. The ruler of the universe." Ulilang Kaluluwa got mad and challenged him to a duel. Bathala defeated the serpent-god. He then burned and buried his rival. Bathala then met Galang Kaluluwa. Unlike Ulila, Gala was his friend. They lived happily together until Gala got sick and death is inevitable. Before he died he asked Bathala for the last time to bury him the same place where Ulila was. Gala knew that Bathala dreamed to create mankind but he can't support them. When Gala was buried beside Ulila, a tree sprouted. Bathala reminded of its leaves with Gala's wings, and its trunk with Ulila's serpent body. The tree then made Bathala's dream came true in creating humanity. It is then called as the 'Tree of Life' which supports mankind of all its needs. People then considered coconut a very sacred tree.

No i don't support the enslavement during colonization, but thats what happens back then in the whole world and done by nearly every country back then even indonesian different nations when they can Don't play all clean just because you're the one that lost in a cherrypicked moment of time that you prefer for your narrative. im indonesian too, but thats the case. There won't be indonesia as it is today if not for the Dutch 'uniting' the territory we have today under its colony back then

United Austronesian Federation will have full domination over the choke-point straits in the most important route of global trade (the straits of Malacca, Sunda, Makassar, Lombok, Sulu Sea, Eastern Indonesian Sea, and southern part of South China Sea. It is a blessing, but also could be a curse, as without a strong naval power, all countries which have their own interests in the global trade will scramble to this area like in the past.

We don’t that as austronesian history is limited to foreign influence, colonialism , and genocide, of your lucky you might get a reference of an indigenous kingdom, only of its influenced by a foreign culture as the mainstream narrative on indidgeous austronesian culture is seen as tribal and primitive while praising Native American culture (in the United States) as advanced and progressive. There was an actual steps or effort taken to realise this in the early 50s. It's called Maphilindo (Malaysia, Phillipines and Indonesia). In the end due to the difficulty of administration, political difference and economic disparity, was not realised. Not as big as the video example but close enough. A country with around 40k island is a challenge to run as each island or chains of island are diverse in their own culture.

In July 1963 then President Diosdado Macapagal held a Manila Summit aiming the formation of MAPHILINDO (Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia), it was a proposed then a nonpolitical confederation of the three Southeast Asian countries. It has short lived because of the member nations difference in political and territorial agenda. If this differences were truly address like what the current ASEAN organization is doing, there might be a higher chance that this Region of the world can be a force to reckon with.

@AhmadFahimi MohdMohiden precisely, that is why we cannot come up with a united agenda towards regional stability. Both our countries have their own agenda. Maybe it may take us more years to attain a solid south east Asian region. I also think that because of numerous years being colony we somewhat lost our ability to rule ourselves.

I'm glad you mentioned that the word "Malay" in reference to the people of Southeast Asia etc was a misconception that "Austronesians" came from the Malay pen. I think that came up when the European colonizers didn't know what to make of this blob of brown people, speaking similar language with similar customs. There's only the one group of Austronesians who settled northern Philippines responsible for the spread of Austronesian language, culture, and some dna throughout the Pacific, all the way to Madagascar. The rest of the Austronesian groups remained in Formosa/Taiwan. The grouping of peoples, language, society and culture commonly called Malay-Polynesian, is really just that one group. It's better to refer to call this group of Austronesian peoples according to sub groups, e.g. Filipinos, Malays, Indonesians, Micronesians, Polynesians, Malagasy etc to be more accurate.

I think if that happen they'll use Indonesia or Malay Johor-Riau Language to be lingua franca rather than English or Chinese-Cantonese. Malay Riau Languages already became lingua franca in Nusantara for century even Phippine used that language before Spain arrived. Also i think Malay Johor-Riau or Bahasa Indonesia will be better to be Lingua Franca rather Cantonese, Mandarin or English, due some various reason: 1.Doesn't have a tense Past, or Future. (while English have a tense, past but no Future) 2.Doesn't have Feminime or Masculine 3.Pronunciation mostly completely Phonetic, except the letter "E" seriously, They should change or add some letter after "E" since they have 6 vocal. A, İ, U, I, O, E. (Even though is better than English Pronunciation) 4.They use Roman Script, of course is better than Mandarin-Cantonese Script. 5. Doesn't have Verb Conjugation, we use prefix-suffixes "Di, and Ter" so no Verb Conjugation. 6. Doesn't have Article. Is,am, Are, Were, Have + Be etc. 7.Doesn't have Tonal pronunciation. (Mandarin and Cantonese have Tonal pronunciation). 8. Plural are rarely used. 9. Easy to memorize vocabulary if you understand prefix and suffixes.

Nice job! I would also suggest getting into deeper discussions that focus on some of the indigenous peoples of that region. Anyway, like usual, here are some ideas to think about. (I also want to reiterate that I am making these lists to help you brainstorm. I do not want to seem like I am demanding in any, way, shape form): 1. Reiterating my suggestions you have not done yet (some of which I won't be mentioning on this list) 2. Red Deer Cave People 3. Denisovans (what we do know about them) 4. Cheddar Man and his unique phenotype 5. What phenotypes of Homo sapiens sapiens went extinct? What did they look like? This focuses more on physical traits of populations, not so much as cultural groups. 6. Type of thought experiment: what if a certain culture, civilization, population, or language group survived to today? And with the latter part with the language groups, what if they were a "united" country today? 7. Uralic Peoples (suggest again) 8. Esperanto Culture (suggest again) 9. Zoroastrianism population and culture in modern day (suggest again) 10. Doggerland 11. Jews of China 12. Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean) (suggest again) 13. Insular Chile (Southeast Pacific) 14. Pygmy peoples and genetics 15. Albinos and albinism 16. The "-stan" nations 17. Bulgaria 18. Nations within nations (beyond the ones you've mentioned already/get into more details with the ones you have) 19. Peoples or places that almost no one has heard of and most people don't realize are inhabited (ex. Palmerston Islanders, 20. ***City based ethnic groups/new ethnogenesis we are seeing right now!***

@@persatuannusantara Rizal is a complicated topic. spanish colonial philippines wasnt all austronesian. the spanish colonial strategy was assimilationist, as opposed to segregationist in indonesia and malaysia, (we did not have enclaves in the same definition as you guys did) so it does not matter if you are an austronesian native, chinese, spanish, japanese, indian, mexican, or whatever, these were all encouraged to assimilate and intermarry to produce mestizos. Rizal was one such who embodied the very height in definition of a filipino mestizo. he was mostly a mestizo de sangley, most his ethnic roots were hokkien chinese and native laguna tagalog on his father side, but on his mother side, it was tornatras with spanish, chinese, japanese, and native blood. he was culturally more spanish though, since he wrote mostly in spanish and was educated in spanish, literally traveled around the world, and politically leaned more to keeping ties with spain, for philippines to just be an official recognized province of spain rather than just some colony
