France was the dominant political and military power of Europe and arguably the world from Louis XIV who laid down the foundations of the power of France to Napoleon who exploited it with new reforms and measures. In the 19th century, after Napoleon's downfall, it did not have the same strenght as Britain took the hegemony and Prussia was growing rapidely, but France still did it job of European arbiter : it defeated the Netherlands to support Belgium, it defeated the Ottomans to support Greece, defeated Austria to support the Italians, and defeated Russia to support the Ottomans and the european balance of power. Before the loss to Prussia in 1870, the only setback was in Mexico, who was rather a political defeat rather than a military one

Napoleon III had great relations with austria, they even put franz josephs brother, Maximilian of Habsburg as the emperor of the french influenced mexican empire (which they may have had a chance to still maintain if they didnt fought the war against the prussians)

Because of the rise of Germany being a threat to the British empire the brits allied with France. In Bavaria, a lot of people still hold a (more or lese) friendly grudge/rivalry against northern german people. "Saupreiss" (literally meaning sow-prussian) is a common insult to people who are not from the bavarian part of Germany and/or to people, who are over properly (this comes from the distain to prussian culture, which favors order and obedience about everything else), even tough today there isn't much difference between Bavarians and other Germans in relation to that.

Sir, excellent video. Have you considered doing a video on a hypothetical Anglo - American war in 1896? Robert Crowley did a nice essay on this topic in his What Ifs of American History entitling it "The Wolf and the Whale." More or less US being dominant on land (invading Canada) and the British Empire being supreme on the sea (bombarding the coast). Could have potentially driven America into the Central Power in WWI and a host of other possibilities. I appreciate your creativity.

I disagree. Without the victory over France the German unity would have had never been established. France interest in keeping southern German states apart from Prussia was huge and more over these states themselves were notably happy with their independence.

Well it wasn't the aim of Bismarck to challenge France it was his aim to unite Germany. And as French demands about the thrown in Spain became unbearable - the Prussian king - a Protestant and leader of the house of Hohenzollern, refused the thrown in the name of his distant catholic relative from southern Germany. But was again confronted with a impossible request from the French ambassador to renounce the thrown forever, which he couldn't. The letter from The king to Bismarck was then reduced to a mere cancellation which sounded rude. This was then the reason for the nationalistic press to go to war with Prussia. The French Emperor could have refused to declare war.

France doesn't need to force a Prussian unconditional surrender, driving back the Prussians from French soil and inflicting heavy losses on them would have been enough to discredit the Prussians among the other German states especially in the eyes of Bavaria.

It was even that relationship, witch made the prussian english alliance more of a thing, as prussia at that time had 0 colonies and no ships, where as France whent full on creating their second colonial empire, even gunning for mexico (just to loose). France and Uk would not have happend. Bismarck also did plan ahead, he waited for the right time to strike, but the prussians where ready the mobilisation won all major wars for them, cannot imagine having a different outcome here, the french generals where not modern enough in that regard. The son would have been worse, a warmonger, going into africa wasting resources. The thing is also that at that point France had the lowest birth rate among all great powers, the germans where having more people, meaning more soldiers more economy.The nothern state had all the coal, the south was poor, especially the Bavarians under Ludwig the second where in a financial crisis because of his buildings. The people in those countries would have never fought against another german state at that point as unification was something all of them wanted. The french would have likley started the war over Luxemburg if not over the depeche, with the difference being that we would have no Luxemburg now xd.
