What If the Noctua NF-A12x25 Had Twice as Many Blades? | Custom 3D Printed Blades

I have always found fan design interesting, companies spend hours upon hours and millions of dollars trying to fine tune the design of their fans to move more are while also making less noise. Have you ever wondered why they choose the amount of blades they do. I have so I decided I would copy one of the best fans on the market and test out 2 other configurations, a 3 blade design and an 18 blade design. One would think more blades means more static pressure but is that all there is to it.

acetone smoothing and sla printing would give a much better finish, would be cool to see if it gives performance improvements

The Russians covered Mig Fighters in a clear lacquer to compensate for shoddy/rough metalworking creating drag. Pretty clever. Maybe you could do something like that for your 3d printed fan projects...

Guessing part of the reason for performance loss is skin friction drag on the blade surface, due to it being rougher on the 3D print, causing pressure losses

I love that youre out there, a man on his own, doing your research and trying to improve on the current best. Many great companies started that same way!

I love how RU-vid is paying for Noctua advertising, and R&D for this guy who isn't even an employee

I think your formula is right...Five blades is the lowest number that would yield the high airflow through the fin stack. There is a window, where 5 to 9 blades will yield similar results, Noctua chose 9 blades, for lowest possible noise.

idk if you have done this before, but make 2 fans of similar designs, one with even amount of blades and one with odd and show viewers why companies don't use odd numbers that much, but instead of just words an actual demonstration.

If you want to get a fan that outperforms Noctua's, you're going to have to stop ignoring the roughness of your 3d prints. You need to smooth those out, you're hindering your aerodynamics significantly. Given the same motor, you're not going to outperform the fan with significantly inferior processes. Knowing this difference also puts into question your assertions about the 18 blade being worse. It's clear given that your clone performs worse that you have other factors interfering with the performance of your fans.

Really shows how confident Noctua is in their fan design to just be like "yeah go ahead and clone it, try your best." Probably having a bit of a chuckle as your attempts to crack 100s of hours of engineering. Not to sound insulting.

Some companies try to take down anything even if it's not for commercial use (*Cough* Nintendo) so good on Noctua.

I gotta say it's awesome that Noctua replied to you and said it's fine if you copy their fan and release the design. Also shows a lot of faith in their product, since they obviously believe people will still want the real deal. Cool video!
