Near A+ work with this video. Only thing I would like to see is maybe a few different thunderbirds charted as well (champ, tour series, gstar) to compare how big the flight differences are within the plastics/releases vs completely different molds!

Been playing since college in ‘01, primary forehand guy ex baseball player. There is only one 9 speed fairway that will hold stable with reliable fade and ZERO TURN. It’s a thunderbird. Backhand, forehand, it’s coming out of anhyzer… popping up flat and cruising straight for 300-325 with a reliable finish. Really not sure why more people don’t throw these. Especially on windy days.

No the flight numbers for brands like innova and westside don’t matter. Innova is extremely inconsistent with their products and well West side seams to get their flight numbers wrong

Can someone explain what Ledgestone runs are? Or any other weird runs like that 😂
@SixSidedDiscs
@SixSidedDiscs Год назад
Hey John, Ledgestone Insurance is a company based in East Peoria, IL, the Ledgestone Insurance Open (often referred to as Ledgestone) is a DGPT tournament at Eureka Lake and Northwood, 2 long-time pro level courses with various layouts, which has also hosted Worlds in the past. How that relates to specific runs of discs is that Nate Heinold, Ledgestone Disc Golf CEO, is very close with Discraft and they run thousands of specialty plastic blends and unique stamps throughout the year to raise money for the Ledgestone tournament, the largest amateur tournament in the world (if I'm not mistaken). The blends of plastic they run for Ledgestone are not stock plastic and sometimes aren't used for anything else, which can make them very sought-after if they have a certain stability or look/feel that players can't otherwise get from Discraft.

Thanks for watching, glad you're enjoying it! I'm not sure if we have any endgame from this series, or a specific goal, other than awareness. @@SixSidedDiscs completely agree. Some sort of benchmark sport-wide would be amazing but it'll probably never happen. I feel like even though not everyone could throw the same as that benchmark, it would at least give you something concrete to compare your flights to. I'm not a power thrower, but if I knew how much off I was from a benchmark, I could just apply that to each disc. Idk if that makes sense, but it's just a pipe dream anyway.

Love this content. I personally tried to find an non-innova thunderbird and had a similar headache. It seems though that you're trying to find a 'Star Thunderbird' as opposed to a 'Champion Thunderbird. Just worth it to note that as you're comparing discs to a specific plastic which tends to be a little more understable than the champ. If people were looking for a champion thunderbird replacement, maybe they'd want to try the Honor or PD.

Glad you're enjoying the content, thanks for watching! Love the mention of just swapping to another disc as a Star vs Champion slot, I've done this with other molds before. I very much like the X/Y axis plotter to show where the different discs fall in comparison, and relative to the goal of duplicating or approximating the flight characteristics of a particular disc. Awesome videos. Have watched many in my short time as a new player this summer. As a statistics and research analysis enthusiast, I have to say, the " Flight Numbers Don't Matter" videos are very intriguing and eye-opening. Many of my first purchases were based strictly on the numbers being accurate to the disc's projected behavior. The advice of a local disc merchant proved to be more in tune with what my desired results, because of his years of past experience. Love the content. Keep it up. Subbed and I'm a fan!

Thunderbird are also WILDLY different depending on the run. Probably the biggest difference of any disc I've ever seen. The old 2017s were nice and straight with a hard finish yet the new halo ones are more stable than me 11x firebird. If you want my opinion the old 2017s are what I consider a true Thunderbird. The discraft anax is an amazing substitute. They are basically exactly the same.

Big issue with a lot of manufacturers is consistency. Innova has always been a crapshoot for me. Discraft and Lat 64 tend to fly by the numbers more often (but even then some randomly are meat hooks or Flippy). The scenario that I presented at the start of this video is one I run into all the time where someone will specifically NOT buy a disc because "of the numbers", even if I try to explain that that specific plastic doesn't fly that way, or that the numbers are wrong. There's so many great examples we want to test and show like that 5/5/0/3 or 4/4/0/3 midrange slot that "flies straight"...well if it flies straight, why isn't it a 0/0 or -1/1? - People say, "Well you just know that the Roc/Roc3, or Method, or 5/5/0/2 or 5/5/0/3 stuff is straight", well some people just DONT lol I can only educate someone at a pop up shop until they are tired of hearing me ramble on about these little intricacies, and imagine explaining that to someone new to the sport. Oof

because youre an amateur with a mediocre throw and release. the numbers are meant for players above your skill level where the discs are thrown with enough power to properly replicate the numbers. if you throw putters and mids youll find them to be completely spot on the numbers for your arm strength (assuming you're not just awful and have a super inconsistent release).

Just found this channel after the coverage of the A tier down in Arizona. Loving the content , may be the only channel I have actually hit the bell icon for lol. Curious question though, for these vids, how many throw are usually utilized for each disc test?

Thanks for watching and for asking! It depends of course but at least 5 or so throws each until we feel like we are seeing how that specific disc flies. Some videos have taken more, some less.

I never throw my Thunderbird backhand lol i swear it was made for forehand. It handles torque so well, i trust it more than any disc in my bag for forehand shots. Ill literally pick it over a midrange or putter and just slow it down to 150-250 or step on it and get 350.

This is another thing that goes under the radar. Just how different a disc can feel from one person to another. I've never felt a Thunderbird that worked with my forehand grip, it always feels a little too deep and digs into my hand along the inside edge of the rim.

I LOVE this video. This is the exact video format players like me need when deciding how to fill certain slots in the bag. A+ content and I can't wait for more.

"I'm looking for something like a Thunderbird." How about a Thunderbird?

When we do tournament payouts, we bring about 700 discs + accessories, bags, etc. It is not uncommon for players in the last payout division to be searching for "discs like X or Y" because the rest sold earlier, and they don't want to miss out on their free plastic. This is a very frequent scenario for me that definitely extends beyond the Thunderbird.

I know youre not an innova fan, Greg, but why was the Teebird3 not included? Near the top of the list when you searched on trydiscs. Its my go-to in a headwind.

We actually threw it in a Teebird comparison video very recently!

Have you ever thrown a Lucid-X Convict? For me that disc comes out of the hand very similar to a thunderbird, numbers are 9, 4, -.5, 3

I have not but it sounds like we need to add that to a list for a follow up on this video!

I'm really not sure why they gave the Vulture a 10 speed, most likely due to it being a modified Predator which has a 9 speed. The rim width and depth are the exact same as the thunderbird. I think people are less interested precisely because the numbers do not tell them the disc is as close as you can get to a thunderbird.

I'm sure you've met some people that "won't throw anything over a 10" or something like that, I hear it all the time. at tournament payouts, "I can't throw 13 speeds" but of course, not all 13 speeds are the same, and the Vulture probably turns a few people off just because its a 10 speed.

@@SixSidedDiscs most amateurs can't throw 13 speeds. that's literally why there's people like you spreading the misinformation that the numbers don't matter. the numbers aren't made for the average players arm strength and lack of technique and inconsistent releases. the disc will do different things than the numbers state for the majority of players with the game having such a large casual following now, the system isn't for them.

great video! i've found flight numbers are completely useless. pdga needs to assign number when they approve discs.

weird i've found them to be very close to spot on. it's always people who don't understand them (or people with an inconsistent throw/release/bad aim) that say they're useless.
