I happily agree. I am fortunate to live NJ and took a 2 hour drive to experience the quality service done by OSBS in central Jersey. Dennis did a great job on the installs. Thanks to Junior Dennis and Bryan for helping me service my XR.
I just brought one anyway lol. And I just fell off it lol. Due to Chicago wind and my own User error. Wind sped me up lol and unstead of hopping off. I one footed it going 5 miles an hour lol. Been going slow for a hour too, thanks Chicago wind. 😅😅😅😅
Fully agree. With the rant about having to sent to FM for repair I am missing shipping costs and turnaround time for all of us outside of US. We can buy our Onewheels here in Europe, but to fix the headlight I need to ship the whole thing across the ocean. HOW RIDICULOUS IS THAT?
As someone happily voiding warranties, and taking apart everything I’ve ever seen since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver this was one of your best Mario. I am definitely looking into component level repair, after having to give up my board for almost 90 days when my BMS failed due to a lightning strike. Fortunately I got a new board and was only boardless for about two weeks, but that two weeks was torture. Right to repair is fundamental to being American. I don’t even understand why or how we got into this mess other than capitalism at its worst. I get that FM would like to be in the repair business, but just like any other dealer should have to compete with other repair businesses. Yes they make a fantastic product, yes I love their product, but all of us who ride know that there are features we would like, and of course the ability to repair, our boards. Do we own them or do we rent them?
Thanks for producing this, I'm grateful for guys like you starting/keeping the conversation going. I have an Onewheel in Canada and the shipping cost alone makes sending it to FM unviable. FFM, VESC all the way.
Totally agree! I had my board for two weeks and loved every minute of it. Until, it stopped turning on, no lightbar, no reaction to the charger, none. So I had to send it to FM for the warranty repair. It is a week now a week since it's in the clearance process here in Europe. It didn't leave even leave the continent and I assume that I will be two months with the board. It honestly sucks!!! I got so used to driving around a city.... FM should seriously think about opening a certified repair shop at least in Europe.
Great video and good argument… I definitely agree with the “right to repair”. I love my Onewheels but don’t exactly like the direction FM is going right now… especially with the “one off” tire size with the Onewheel GT! Seems like they’re trying to make it much more difficult for third parties to do anything in the near future. Just my opinion. Ride on, be safe!
Maybe we can convert you to component level repair. Its fun and irritating almost simultaneously and the oh its alive feels so good. I'm fighting a BMS right now. I replaced the max chip, caps around the max, communication connector, bad LED's on the light bar and jumped wire over and remade the wire harness. I'm not done yet and its still fighting me but hopefully I can get it done soon.
As another poster already said and especially for us not in the US is crazy to expect us to ship things back to them for every repair. Why don’t they at the very least have official licensed repair centres around the world. It is a constant worry that a fault might develop that you have no relatively easy way to get fixed, short of shipping back to them from the UK at great expense etc.
This is the only thing holding me back from buying a OW (I'm in the UK too.) I can drive 30 minutes to a local shop and spend nearly £2k on one but if something goes wrong I may have to shell out who knows what to ship it back to FM. I have searched and asked about repair shops in the UK. I even contacted one to see if they could put my mind at ease. "I wouldn't worry about it" was the response. Not what I wanted to hear. Minor repairs I would attempt myself anyway, but if a board or battery was at fault or came to the end of its life, then what? As you mentioned, properly stocked repair centres around the world would be the answer. Stick one in Europe for a start and see what happens. What have FM got to lose by passing some of the work on? I would guess that they'd sell more boards to happier customers and that would make up for any revenue they lost from repairs. I'm afraid I'll be getting around on TwoFeet for a little while longer.
I live 8 hours away from one stop, and where I live, I highly doubt I could find a onewheel shop that would have what I want. Would they be ok if I shipped to them and had them repair/upgrade for me?
I totally agree. But where can I find a repair video. My XR is giving me a different number of light blinks everytime I try to turn it on. Not sure what to do. But I'm definitely not able to afford to send it in. Gotta fix it myself. Help!!!
Well spoken, and such an important issue too. Imagine if you buy a new Ford car, and you get a local guy to replace a flat tire... And then you've lost your Ford car warranty? 🤔 This is basically immoral profiteering by FM, shame on them. Great Onewheel product, but a terrible immoral way to treat their customers. 😕
Yeah new pint x owner first time one wheeler but I take absolutely nothing I own. Dirt bikes, drones, rzr, truck anything to a dealer to fix I always fix it myself that is literally a big part of the hobby to me and it drives me nuts future motion essentially service locks me.
Exactly, it is a damn shame. I live in Europe and I don't even want to look how much would it cost to send there and back my board. That, plus the cost of the repair would very probably be somewhere close to just buying a working second hand board from the US and ship it to here, which is just damn ridiculous and very greedy on their part. Not to mention the environmental costs of moving a 30 pound package all over the world and back, versus they just sending me the piece or whatever. Luckily I'm all for independent repair, I have a bit of knowledge on electronics, and don't mind watching countless tutorials on RU-vid. But if that wasn't the case I would absolutely not buy a OW because if it breaks, you're totally screwed. Maybe that is why I haven't seen another OW other than mine ever here. And to your point with Apple, I really hate their practices (I've shared many frustrations with Louis Rossman over the years) so I would hate to buy their products. Luckily, for that there's alternatives, not so much with FM. I'm following the VESC project closely but it's still very much in beta.
I have been riding an electric board for a bit and have some stuff going wrong with screws. If I can't fix it on my own, I might just go to OSBS as I live close by.
ANOTHER RANT! Well done by the way - I have an even WORSE issue - I live in Australia and there are no repair places... and I sent my OneWheel back to Future Motion because after diagnosing it with them via email, they instructed me to return it fo repair... but I couldn't return it as even specialty couriers wouldn't ship it due to the batteries - so I shipped it without batteries and Future don't wan to repair it now as its against their terms. I have offered to buy new batteries from them which they don't want to do. And it's already cost me $250 to ship it there and now they want me to ship it back to myself - broken!
When my XR died at 8000 miles, I did the only logical thing. I parted it out and used the money to buy a real PEV, the King Song 16x. I now own a V11 and V12. So glad I took the EUC plunge
I'd hardly consider a board that lasted 8,000 miles to not be "real". EUCs with that kind of mileage are very much in the minority. Whether that's a function of the culture or the products, I'm not sure.
@@TheBoardGarage good point. The QC is the EUC world is scary bad. With my OW, my controller went. To me it wasn't worth repairing. I was nervous to try EUC but I'm glad it worked out for me.
Also from Europe (UK specifically) - I'd consider a OneWheel, but they aren't exactly legal here unless you take them off road, and if you take them off road there's a higher chance that wet muddy water will get everywhere (because it rains all the time). It's not California, producing an out door product that's not sufficiently water resistant isn't going to cut it when it costs thousands of £/$/€, especially if FM aren't going to sort out local repair centres.
Seems to me that Future Motion is missing out on a huge revenue stream by not selling OEM parts to repair businesses. If people are more willing to go outside of their rigid ecosystem and part out old boards to get what they need, they are just leaving money on the table.
Quite the opposite. By controller the repair aspect of the product, they retain more revenue since they retain control. It's one of the ways that most tech companies continue to earn money on past sale of a product.
@@TheBoardGarage Control works even better when you have a full monopoly on the device and customers love to keep throwing money at them supporting their continued monopolist behaviors. If we want a change from Future Motion, the only way is to stop buying their products.
i have a question. How can i change my tire if i have Armor-dilloz in my inner tube already? would i have to clean out my inner tube and put fresh armor dilloz in my inner tube can you please help me with this issue?
These tires are tubeless, and when removing a tire, any tire sealant will spill. There shouldn’t be enough to just pour out, but it would have to be cleaned off the hub motor, and new sealant installed after the new tire is seated.
It especially sucks if you live in Europe. But atleast where I live there's a very tight community of onewheelers, so there's a good chance someone knows how to fix your board.
Hey guys, pretty stumped here.. I get off the train like usual, press the on button, light turns blue and steady, I get on..nosedive instantly, it’s not autoleveling at all, I check the app and it shows the gyroscopic sensor is working but nothing.. I’ve got a 32lb weight now, any ideas? Edit: on the one wheel app I noticed the footpad sensor isn’t registering my feet lol is this something that happens a lot?
Wow.. now I want to stop by the Board Shop! Fair ways away, from Canada, but it's a place I'd love to go and see at least once :) As for the Rights to Repair, I completely agree.. so much resources are wasted by doing it 'the way they want us to do it' compared to how independents figured out how to do it. I understand the business model of Future Motion as any bad repair gives them bad publicity, but no matter who does it, when bad things happen, it's too late! I don't want to know how much it would cost me to send my board back to FM... I'm starting to get the flickering lights thing and even if I'm on warranty, I think I'm just going to order the wire from the Board Shop and fix it. The price of a heat gun is way cheaper than postage.
My onewheel button flashes when I pug it in and it’s completely dead because the button had gotten stuck but I got the button unstuck I’ve looked it up an there’s no information
You think FM would not have an issue with it, they would rather sell a 2200 board than sell you a controller or hub motor for $xxx.xx Sell the parts with out warrenty and call it good then. You have the market cornered FM let us live in one big happy family!!!
@@nyccollin Using aftermarket bumpers like BANG Bumpers, Butter Bumpers, etc., will void your warranty according to the manual. Again, it's hard to say in practice, if they'd follow through with that. But since it's in the writing, they'd say they're justified in doing so.
I’m definitely not buying anew OneWheel. Was strongly considering it, but it sounds like long term maintenance and repair is expensive and intentionally painful.
As someone who would much rather use an independent repair shop I have reached out to five or six different shops and can even get a call back or an email. Pretty sad.
Right to repair is very important. FM should at least make their parts compatible and not require a full rebuild of the system. Imagine if your headlights on your car are broken and to fix it you need a entirely new car. It’s wasteful and doesn’t make sense for the consumer.
I have contacted FM for the little plastic piece on the onewheel pint that is a wire protection/secure point underneath the board and has two small philips screws. I was half a year out of warranty and one of them cracked and gave them specifics and common sense that it is infact a plastic piece with two screws in the email. I asked for them to possibly send them and if I have to pay for it, I don't care. They sent me two of them for free and I have a extra piece just in case. So this is probably a extremely rare occurrence but atleast it's something for us as a consumer to repair
My headlight cable came loose at 1000 miles on my 4209 Finally after 8800 miles it collided with something else and killed it. Bob couldn't fix it. Should of sent it before it died😢 I just bought a new board.
Then they wonder why people go to floatwheel and build their own. May as well if you’re going to get charge for onewheel and get busted on something in their voided section.
They actually send me the front foot pad thing to install my self.. But I had to talk to my reseller to get it shipped for free. Would cost a mother fucker to send it to the USA.
8:35 that just looks so bad for the board. I’d never do that to mine. Makes the controller wonder what the hell is going on, not to mention unnecessary tire wear and heating up the motor. Just not worth it in my opinion. Usually easy to find a ramp and avoid curbs.
it's gotta have a real problem if the board could not handle that. Controller code is fine, trust me we know what is happening in there. Fins are nicer to it i guess.
they do this with electric scooters too they use so many diff colour wires inpossible to know wha tire and were and then they send wrong connrctions out on parts leading to bigger issses , i need a stem for my eletric scooter been waiting a year they still have none in stock guess will get in 2025 if not will make my own i already bough aluminiom i just need to buy loads more will cast my own parts and make em , dont know how right now but will learn.,
I have worked on repairing many scooters and OW's and it usually is a lack of quality control with Chinese escooters. Sometimes language barrier issues. Most parts for OW made in China anyways. Scooter BS is usually not evidentially malicious, at least as bad as Future Motion BS is
I do have to disagree with your phrasing. I don't consider a OneWheel to be a Vehicle. Vehicles have to be registered with DMV in the state of New York. I consider them Conveyances.
I always try to keep my responce positive. I use my one wheel at work carrying over 50 lb of bolts to and from the shop back to inventory. In one day it shut off on me as I was going back to my Jeep to go home and slammed on the f****** ground. I used to skateboard and I'm not a p**** but how can I trust something that can't go under 5 mph and just shut off on me. I thought this is the best purchase of my life and now I don't want to ride it because I can't trust it
Right to repair is not something that should exist. You should do your research before making a purchase. If you don’t like the way a company chooses to support their product then don’t buy one. It’s your choice at that point.
