Netflix show 'Indian Matchmaking' has once again brought the topic of the "big, fat Indian wedding" to the fore. The institution of marriage is important everywhere, but in India, it's often the most important event of an adult's life. While we know that things like caste and religion play a big role in arranged Indian marriages, there are other less-talked about things that young Indians are actively looking for in their prospective partners. In this video, we look at what those things are, and how and why they affect marriage choices among both Indian women and men. We attempt to draw conclusions about factors that decide Indian marriages based on the data and evidence available to us.

@@snehashispanda1651 You know, your ancestral generation can be found out from your blood. Brahmin(from what they say) come from better blood line than other caste. And how their blood is better? because of the occupation they did for centuries and how they lived. That is also stored in our blood. Genetic structuring , enhancement, evolution whatever, is feeded in their blood. So its all about enhancing your tree. Apple tree can give apple, orange will give orange. But if you have both seeds mixed, you dont know what you're getting. It may be even better, but nobodies know. The best case here to follow, is to keep them separate, so that they can get better and better as they age. I dont know if they make sense. I'm Brahmin that too upper caste brahmin. My parents dont have anything with intercaste(yeah but not SC) or even inter religion. But from what ive seen around me, I'm convinced, that blood line is not something made up thing. As a 20 year female, I realised after watching this video that it is very much important for a female to be financially independent. I believe people marry so that they find a partner who can help them to make their life easier and reduce their effort ( not just financially but in each and every perspective ). Not because they want drama after their marriage. It's important to live a peaceful and happy life. Marriage is indeed not the end goal it's a part of life. Hence, choose your partner wisely. Marry when you are ready not because your parents, relatives or society wants you to.

It's just about survival for rest of your life which includes having kids that look after you on your old age, someone to talk to, partner for sex , partner for financial dependency, and list goes on. What i have learned that Indian man don't want their wife to be more educated, employed they want wife who can do household work and then if wife search for better income husband for their security may be she would be thinking of future their children their family then they will consider her goldigger even they (men)themselves demand for lakh and lakh as dowry that also not from girl from girl's family( besharmi to dekho )atleast girl expect good income just from husband but men will she girl's father is rich or not in actually men should be consider traditional goldigger who demands money as dowry and even can kill women easily for it Means Indian men never fails to give trauma to women, ridiculous🤦‍♀.

My friend from school was very adamant even at that age that she won't marry an Indian guy, due to dowry harassment her mother had to go through form her father. True to her words, she went to US for masters, fell in love with an American of Korean descent and is happily married now. It was a simple American style wedding with immediate family and the expense was born by both of them (American style) without any contribution from her or her husband's parents/family and no dowry. Has an angelic looking 2-year-old kid now and when they visited India last month, I could see my friend really glowing. Could really see how happy she was, and I must admit I felt slightly jealous. My ex girlfriend and i both are engineers, she all of sudden ended our 7 yr old relationship bcoz her papa wouldn't agree and she cannot hurt him by marrying me. Cut scene, she married a guy who's a doctor and 4 yrs elder to her. Paying him a hefty amount in dowry, This was within 3 months of breakup. Remember boys love isn't enough to marry your girlfriend and keep her happy, you either have to earn equal or more than her dad to full fill her needs. Nothing against girls or love relationships here, it's just my personal experience, contradictions are welcome!

they are worried because time/age is the biggest enemy to a woman's marriage. This is not a judgement or an attempt to harass you. This is the truth. Men prefer younger women. And if you're wondering it's our beloved India only, then you're wrong. It's about everywhere. Also, the higher you go in education, you're going to want a man even higher than that. Just see in the video only, how that woman speaks with disgust that she will have to marry a lesser educated man than her. Please note: This is not an attempt to make your accomplishments futile, i have no interest, no personal conflict in diminishing someon'es life like that. Just saw a divorce of a family member after 3 months of love marriage due to dowry reasons. Love marriages are equally at risk because this mindset is deeply rooted in all Indians. Also few years ago saw a relative dying of heart attack due to the pressure of their daughter's marriage. I am very young for marriage but I have made a promise to myself that I won't take any dowry from anyone no matter what people think about me. It just doesn't make sense to me that just to please people around you whom you won't even talk to after the marriage you need to fulfill their so called parampara and put a big burden on a family. Be capable enough to marry someone and then move forward so that you don't need anyone's money. Also start accepting working women, this regressiveness have put our country much behind other 3rd world countries. Women are not born to be housewives, they are much more than that.

On the other hand false dowry claim allegations, legal threat blackmailing if not the demands are fulfilled and not to forget marital rape allegation threat are also skyrocketing against which no legal measures are available in the case of innocence of the husband, also in divorce, the laws are unfaakingbelievably discriminated against man where the woman will get the divorce and of course the monthly allowance just by complaining in court whereas even if the women cheated with other guy and the husband provided the court with video proof of that the husband still have to give the monthly allowance!! I mean in this present time marrying a woman in India is much more self destructive in comparison to self bombing yourself, atleast you die instantly with bomb without much idea of pain but in marriage you will die slowly and painfully in a long course of your life.

Then the reality of arranged marriage hit me where as a guy, you are reduced down to your salary and property. Girls looking for someone with 2-5x the salary, huge property etc. Then I changed my views on dowry, that when I'm bringing so much financial value to the relationship, what does the girl bring? My parents are contributing so much property to our relationship, what do the girls parents contribute?

Working women should start accepting unemployed men also... The strong independent employed career women need not be worried that the rich well employed men are refusing to marry her,,, Because there are many poor unemployed homeless handsome young men who are ready to marry an employed woman and become her househusband... So, There is a very easy solution to this problem faced by strong independent career women.. All employed career Women who want to work after marriage, stay in her father's house after marriage, and look after her parents, do not want to take leave from her job to look after her kids etc can marry a poor, unemployed homeless, handsome, young man... He will be happy to live in his career wife's house because he is homeless. So, the wife can always look after her parents . He will never stop his career wife from working after her marriage because he is unemployed . Because he is unemployed and always sitting inside his wife Father's house, he will look after her small kids. So, she need not take leave from work to look after her kids. She can continue her career and present life style in her Father's house... But, a rich well employed man who owns his own house, is not going to come and live in his father in law's house. Most rich well employed men don't want to marry employed women. Rich well employed men already have enough money, and so he does not need the salary of his wife. So, most rich well employed men want to have an unemployed housewife and have a Peaceful married life. There are many unemployed girls who don't like to work, who are poor, living in rented house, because her parents are poor and don't have money to buy to their own house etc. These poor unemployed girls are waiting for some man to come and marry her and take her to the husband's house and give her free food and shelter for the rest of her life. So, the rich well employed men like to marry such unemployed women and lead a happy life in his own house . While the career girls who do not want to go to her husband's house, want to work after marriage etc can marry a poor, unemployed, homeless, handsome young man and take her husband to her father's house or to her rented house and lead a happy life ... So, everyone is happy.. But, what happens is that when independent employed career women are given 2 choices.. 1.. marry a poor unemployed homeless handsome young man who actually wants to marry an employed woman, so that she can continue to work after marriage till her retirement from job at 60 years.. OR.. 2.. Marry a rich well employed man with big house, who does not want to marry an employed woman and he actually wants to marry an unemployed woman... Now the independent employed career women always select the second choice and she will tell the rich well employed man that she will stop working after marriage and shall become a housewife, because she wants to stay in the rich well employed man's bigger house. The employed woman refuses to marry a poor unemployed handsome homeless man who wants his wife to work after marriage and he is also ready to stay in her father's house.. And then she tries to blame society for not allowing her to work after marriage, look after her parents etc when it is clear that she herself had the choice to work after marriage, if she had married the poor unemployed homeless handsome young man.... That is the hypocrisy of women... Why cannot employed women marry a poor unemployed homeless handsome young man who actually wants his wife to work after marriage.... Instead of trying to marry a rich well employed man who actually wants to marry an unemployed woman... A

Timid person need brave person to balance the life in risky situations, introvert needs an extravert to solve the issues of networking, care free person need disciplined person for the stability in life etc. Your life partner is other half that gives you completeness. So marry other person based on their life skills, their likes and dislikes and personality traits.

Not just marry but date according to that. Too many young women and men are way too stupid to just date based on shallow things like looks and body of a woman or status, money and popularity of a guy. You see it in high schools and colleges all the time people go for people who have high SMV. But when it comes to marriage they completely change their criteria in a partner. We need sexual awareness not sex education. Awareness around what sort of toxic men and women to ignore so that people don't carry their years of baggage in form of trauma and hurt into their marriage.

Now a days most of the job oriented boys who are leaving in highly cost area, want career oriented girls to share there living cost. But as I already told, that type of girls are not so easy to find in arrange marriage. I think in arrange marriage most of the persons put long listed preferences and within first few years of starting partner search they don't want to compromise with it which is opposite in love marriage.

One of my friend married a guy from UP whom she worked with in an MNC. Theirs was a love marriage with opposition from both sides. My friend was Malayali Christian and the guy's family was UP brahmin from Kanpur. The guy's family demanded lakhs of rupees of dowry and also demanded a bullet for the younger son because she was not from their caste. The guy initially opposed his parents demands but soon after marriage he told my friend to slightly 'adjust'. My friend gave up meat and eggs for him and became pure vegetarian, did all the poojas whenever his family demanded. Celebrated all the festivals with them. But her then husband and family, made her life miserable. Two years later, it was tipping point and she went to her family and told them that she longer wants to stay with him and or his family. The had a civil court divorce with the judge ordering the family to pay everything back. Now, she's married to someone from her community who has more liberal outlook and is happily settled abroad with twins. Even with many cross cultural and inter-caste marriages, women are at the receiving end.

Something similar happened with my friend. She married a Muslim guy who was our college batchmate (against her family wishes offcourse), even changed her identity / converted under pressure as she was heads over heels in love with the chap. Later on she couldn’t adjust to the different culture and interference of her in-laws to the point of restricting her day to day freedom of clothes to wear and whom to talk with and when to come home etc etc. she finally had enough and later on divorced the guy after 1.5 years of struggle to make it work. Now she is well settled in Bangalore with a guy from south itself. Nobody in our group could’ve imagined her first marriage would turn out to be so disastrous owing to religious differences and family interference.

In arrange marriages men and women mostly stick to stereotypical roles. Hence man is the bread winner and women are house wives. Women leave their house after marriage, will seek a comfortable life. Also most men get very insecure if their wife earns more than them. Women are conditioned in the same way.

I have a friend who is from up, he said the same things of dowry culture as you said in this video, but also most of the time the girl is either just 10/12 th pass or just doing just household works and waiting for their marriage...no eagerness for higher studies. Basically what i am trying to say is that there is no such generalized answer for questions like these..1) between love or arrange which is better?, 2) is dowry good or bad, 3)who is responsible for the growing rates of divorce.. Here i would say everyone have their own opinion amd we should respect our partners opinion and also kabhi kabhi ladkiyo ko bhi aapne se kam salaried/ sam qualified ladko se bhi saadi karna chahiye.

The actual things which matter in a marriage (love, care, compatibility, understanding, like-mindedness) doesn't bother them. Saw the whole video and I have some thoughts to share. Societal expectations from the two sexes are different. It's just the way it is, I'm not judging the morality of it all. At the 3 minute mark, you spoke of how girls never want to marry someone with a lesser degree, preferring to stay single otherwise. I'm sure this doesn't apply to all, but the question you have to ask is why is this the case? guys are okay marrying girls with a lesser degree or wealth all the time. My observation is that girls only consider guys who are better than them in some way (taller, makes more money, has better education etc). It's just the way it is. Girls also compare against what their peers have ALL the time. A companion who's far below what their friends have is shameful / is a burden for them. This also ties in to the other point that you bought up about the guy's wealth. While it's true that you need to earn enough to support the family, if you observe more closely, the girls rarely (if at all) choose someone who earn less than them, even if the money is pretty large in absolute terms. Let me also tell you another situation that will never happen: A high earning girl choosing a low earning dude. Long story short, as a guy you start off with no value, and that needs to be built over time via skills, money etc Emphasizing once again, I'm not being emotional here. It's just the way things are as far as I can tell, gotta accept it and move on. Also, about arranged marriages and love marriages. In 2022, arranged marriages aren't exactly like how it's portrayed out to be. While the family nags you to get marriage, they mostly bring in matches while the decision is yours. I've seen this freedom given to both sexes. Love marriages just makes it easier on the parents with the search lol. Do an engagement, wait over a year for the marriage, you can call of the wedding if things are bad. Lotsa engagements don't end in marriages, it's very common.

true. I believe the narrative in this video was again very misandrist. Not directly but no one in video or comments mentions the women's preferences as a possible problem. I swear, women will see God before they are able to see the errors in their ways. Khud ko chahiye ladka who is better than her, aur agar hamko chahiye ladki jo ki hamare niche ho, then it's a problem. When both have the same exact effect. Stupidity can know no bounds.

@@rudra20048 Yes , It should be a normal thing in the culture, but it's never going to be accepted by majority. Sad but true. Dating in rural areas is certainly not a thing where half of the population resides. And dating in Urban areas is only common in high class societies which constitutes a very low % of urban population. We might be technological advanced but are very backward in dating, love and marriage area. 95 % of marriages happen as arranged which are based on traditional customs i.e. thousands of years old Hindu culture. So basically implementing dating and Relationship norms is against the Hindu community and culture. So it's impossible

I had a friend I met her while working in one of the corporate hospitals she is also 3 years older to me now she will turn 30 , she herself told me this story..So my friend who is malyalee but born n brought up in Ludhiana fell in love with a Punjabi boy...they had 9 years long relationship...when her mother got to know about it she beaten her that badly she broke her 2 major bones tibia and fibula...she was on bed for 6 months..after recovery her mother arranged her marriage to a keralite boy who is a nursing incharge and an alcoholic...she was forced to marry him...after marriage my friend was harrassed by her husband so much, he used to drug her even ...she told her parents they asked not to make excuses and asked not bring bad name in the Church...after so much trauma she and her husband came to Delhi and started their jobs in different hospitals..where I met her even there she met this guy which I would love to mention his name jomy who used to torchur her that he will tell her husband about affair she had before marriage as they were from same church , he used to ask her money when ever he wanted...I got to know she told me everything I went to management and wrote a complaint against him but my case was taken up by one man who was infamous for his flings with young girls and was really cordial with jomy ....first of all he wasn't listening to me at all then I decided to quit job then he got scared so next week he called me back n asked to join n made assurance that he will ask the bench to see the matter but this men asked my friend to work in MICU when she was 6 months pregnant no one works in that ward if you are pregnant as it requires heavy lifting and have seriously sick patients...then she left the job where his husband again was not understanding her but this time she didn't listen him n joined back....after a month the man and this jomy conspired against me with 2 keralite girls and put memo against me lying some shit so they asked me that either FIR or just quit job...at that point I was pursuing my master's degree in hospital administration so I didn't want anything tangling with future I left but not silently 🤣I left by mailing proofs to one of the heads..then one day my friend met me telling jomy and her husband are friends they worked together before in some hospital and her husband already knew about her previous affair 🤦 and she also told me never to meet me again as her husband n mother doesn't want shred of me in their lives...!! That was my last meeting with her...this was all 3 years back..!! I realised most women have no self respect or they want some back to guard them then only they can take big step..! My friendship was of no use I wish I would have taught her to respect herself first..!!
