ok here goes: Part 1: The term "chicano" originally was used to refer to sons and daugthers of Mexican migrants. These youth often found themselves out of place, as they were not seen as "Mexican" by Mexicans or "American" by Americans. Through and after the Chicano Movement of the 60's the term "Chicano" was accepted as a symbol of self-determination.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA to parents from Oaxaca, Mexico (Zapotec). Chicano is a label more often used by those Mexican-Americans that can't speak Spanish (2nd generation and onward). Most Spanish speaking Mexican-Americans (Mostly 1st generation and some 2nd) almost never refer to themselves as Chicanos. We usually call ourselves "Mexican" or "Mexican-American". We associate ourselves heavily with Mexican culture due to our parents being full 100% Mexican.
b3nner i like your definition and i agree to a certain extent. I'm the same I say I'm mexican or American. I also identify as Chicano, but because i see it as the perfet term for being Mexican-American. Also because I don't believe at the moment we will ever truly be excepted by American culture or Mexican Culture. We are in the middle that's why. I'm proud of the term i think we should take it back because it has been stigmatized
Chicano is a person who was born in america with Hispanic descendant ,so for an example if your parents are from mexico or any other Latin country and they come to america and there kids were born in america you are consider a Chicano.now if a Chicano has kids in america they are consider Americans.
I was a teenager in late 60s when the “slang” word at the time first started popping up in east LA. Early 70s with the rise of Mexican American kids entering colleges and the Caesar Chavez farmers demonstrations is when the word became established as a way to identify an distinguish a difference between Mexican and Mexican American. A way of claiming your American citizenship but still having your Mexican cultural traditions. Chicano is a cultural identity while Mexican-American is a legal or formal identity
@ChicanoDeCalifornia YOU HIT IT ON THE NAIL we are Americans of Mexican descent ,in Mexico we are not accepted because we are Americans ,Chicano don't deny we have Mexican blood but we are not from Mexico
Chicano or Chicana mean American Mexican That means our parents or grandparents came from Mexico. In my case my dad was born in Texas and my mom in Mexico. I was born in California proud of being an American first.
We can appreciate each others cultures but we are not the same. I know Costa Ricans, but I don't identify as one. We are different in the end since the Chicano culture is tied to Mexico.
Chicano! is also the revolutionary mexcican american that refuses to be pushed around by either culture and doesn't allow them self to be defined as one thing, but they define themselves and are proud their heritage and sacrafices.
Why do you hate being called Chicano? It's great that your grand father was apart of the movement that made Mexican- Americans have the same rights as everyone else. He literally paved the way for you
Spain, polish jews.ecuatorial guineans, spanish saharans, old philipinos,Argentinians,Chileans, Uruguayans,Paraguayans,Peruvians,Bolivians,Ecuatorians,Colombians.Venezuelans,Panamanians,Costa Ricans,Dominicans,Puerto Ricans,Cubans,Nicaraguans,Hondurans,Guatemalans and last but not least The USA. spanish is the Oficial alternate language spoken by over 40 million people in the USA.
I am American Indian and white born and raised here in the US does that make me mestizo? I know I am also in Canada called a Metis which means both Amerindian and white also has the same meaning and similar spelling.
I am a Mexican-American and I like to call myself a Chicano. I also don't look down on other spanish speaking immigrants. We like to call ourselves Chicano to clarify that we Americans who are proud of our Mexican roots. The way the world views us is ridiculous. They treat us like were all illegals. If I said I was Latino or Hispanic, there would too many possibilities of where my roots are from. Now I am not denying that I am Latino, but it's nice to have some individuality.
Chicano was a term made popular by young Mexican-American activists in the 1960's but mainstream Mexican-Americans find it's usage vulgar and prefer to self identify as Mexican-American, Hispanic or Latino. According to Ruben Salazar "A Chicano is a Mexican-American with a non-Anglo image of himself" and according to Leo Limón, "a Chicano is an indigenous Mexican American". Historically there are many theories as to is true origin and in Mexico it carries a negative connotation and only an Indian would ever refer to himself as such.
@calman1951 Heritage, and citizenship are not mutualy exclusive. Mex flag is used as identity symbol, not expression of loyalty - hell, Mexico is foreign nation to me.
simon. and the guy after him as well... but chican@s only exist here and not in mexico BUT i currently saw that those in mexico are getting aware of the term CHICAN@ so, more and more people are getting aware.
By the way my wife is Mexican, her grandfather was full German that left Germany during the Hitler days & she is white so not all white people are American there's white people all over this world. it's the way every person looks at it that makes a difference.when i see a white American i see that he or her is American of some other country just as i am. i think its easier for me to see that because i am also American.
I thought it was a mexican indian (i.e. mexica) not Hispanic, Latino or of mexican parents. American Indians. People seem to think only indians live in USA and the othersthat look indian but speak spanish are somehow turn to Hispanic (spaniard)
That's true. Chicanos do have two cultures, but we are expected to show ONLY American pride. If we show any Mexican pride we automatically get called "illegal immigrants" and everybody thinks that we hate the USA! But Puerto Ricans can show their pride with no one harrassing them. I don't know what is wrong with society today, it is so racists.
Chicano is a person who is American of Mexican heritage or background. So therefore a Mexican-American. But, a Chicano is Mexican-American who is proud of their background and culture and is willing to make a difference for their people. Nobody really knows what it is they over use the word. Born in the United States with Mexican parents my mom born in America my dad born in Mexico but i am proud of my heritage.
Peace to everyone on here. There is no one right or wrong way to be a Chicano/a; it is, and probably always will be, a very fluid concept and identity.
For me a Chicano is AMERICAN first that honors his Mexican heritage. Mexican Americans basically fought to defend America in all wars and started political movements to be treated the same as Anglo Americans.
@PRBOYS13 not sure what you mean by "SAME BLOOD" MEXICO is such a diverse country. you have blacks, whites, mestizos, indiginous, asians and all in between. so what "blood" are you talking about? remember mexican is just a NATIONALITY just like american.
XICANO OR CHICANO 🇲🇽🇺🇸 ITS ONLY A PERSON OF MEXICAN DESCENDANT BEING BORN IN THE USA 🇺🇸 , ANYBODY ELSE THAT ITS A DESCENDANT FROM A PARENTS BORN ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD , OR IN THE REST OF THE LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES , ARE NOT AT ALL CHICANOS OR XICANOS 🇲🇽🇺🇸 SO DONT GET CONFUSED ABOUT IT 👋😎🧢🇲🇽🇺🇸.
@noricky1 I'm a 3rd gen American per my father & 2nd per my mother. my uncles & aunts are Americans, my uncles went to war for the united states & cousins that went to Vietnam. my heritage is here & now,i have never felt second class citizen in my country because i know what i am, i am AMERICAN OF MEXICAN decent. the majority of the people that have a problem with that is the Mexican people, I went to Mexico to find my place & only discovered i was a Chicano taking up there space.
that's why i laugh,we all know the history of the united states ,Mexico & other countries.i said it once before, 99% of Chicano s do not deny the Mexican blood we have. calling yourself a Chicano to me, means that your proud of your Mexican heritage and also of being born & raised in America .just because i have ancestors from Mexico doesn't mean i have to go back there and be a part of Mexico, this is my country hands down.we are already here anyone that doesn't like can leave.
Chicano! is the embodyment of both american culture and mexican culture but not really excepted by either culture because by mexicans are considered pocho's and by americans concidered non american because of their cultural difference. a Bastard pretty much. but to say "soy chicano" it's like saying I'm proud of both even though I may not be excepted by both!
Proud CHICANO✊ I was born in Mexico raised In California I am a Chicano whether A stupid paper tells me i am or not You Could never take someones culture away.
Chicano is a blood line. It started back when the Spanish settled in the Sangre de Cristos.in the 17 hundreds. It is a mix of Spanish and Native Americans. Ancestry DNA doesn't lie. El Indio Hispano =Chicano
i know everyone defines being a Chicano differently but i think it started off as progressive young people of Mexican descent who were born in the United States. simply, Mexicans who were born here.
a Chicano is an American with Mexican parents but in my case my Texas pride is way more stronger than either my American or Mexican pride its why i call myself Tejano
well said. thank you for showing some knowledge and can give productive feedback. Most "Chicano" that celebrate people like George Lopez are an embarrassment to people who most associate themselves with Mexico. I agree that here in Los Angeles where the word most significantly originates from, its is own thing. Be proud, of course! But things like cheer for the Dodgers and not know the simple history of Chavez Ravine really shows the lack of misrepresention of ones own identity.
Troka - Troca - Camioneta o Pick Up. Baica Bicicleta, del inglésbike
MEXICAN i am NOT latino (latinos are anglo europeans from italy) i am NOT hispanic (hispanics are anglo europeans from spain) MEXICAN because we refuse to be anything else because it feels so good to be MEXICAN
I used to not like the term Chicano because I associated it with gangbangers and low riders in the 80s and 90s and that has never been my style. I am ok with the term now, but I still prefer Mexican American or Mexican (I have dual citizenship).
Part 2: The term "Chicano" has evolved and is now grounded in a philosophy, not a nationality. It means taking on a political awareness and social responsibility. Is is a progressive state of mind and poltical/social consiousness. Being a Chicano is an identity. Chicanismo does not exclude anyone. Anyone, of any nationality or ethnic identity, can be a Chicano/a. the guy at approx 1:36 is right. hope this helps. :]
Little Mexican, what ever happened to the word "pocho", pocho sounds lame, but it's the children born in the U.S. of Mexican people. Now, after the Mexican-American war, many things have been forgotten and rarely cited.
@LozzerFaceMe i think chicano is a mexican american american cause if your not mexican american you can't be a chicano bud... and i agree with you completely, chicano is a state of mind... i'm chicano and proud from denver colorado.. thanks for lettin it be known bud
