Great video! I’m a physician specializing in spine (PM&R) and state these facts often. I use the term “improve” instead of heal as most of the disc is avascular and doesn’t return to its normal architecture.

@@E3Rehab I was able to pump my disc on a back machine sitting sideways and flexing away from the painful side to increase blood flow and the pain went down in a two week period from a 8-10 with morphine to a 2 and was able to discontinue pain meds. This was after P. T. and 3 shots into the disc space each with less effect. As a PTA I was able to use information of pumping the disc from a P.T.'s book in an unconventional manner but it's the only way the pain decreased and I have been pain free for 14 years now.

was shocked to find out that an hernia can.heal itself .l feel actually very stupid because l always said to my client that it is impossible. Please could you explain further? He said it is reversible and you said it isn't really.
@joconnell3473
@joconnell3473 2 года назад
@@alessandraferrara240 basically the herniation can reduce in size so it’s no longer compressing or irritating the nerve but the disc never returns to its normal architecture where a nucleus is completely contained in an intact annulus. On an axial MRI you may see less disc material in the canal or the foramen but you are unlikely to see completely normal nucleus/annulus architecture. Practically, it’s very rare to do a follow up MRI unless symptoms remain or occur at another spinal level.

Great video, trust this guy and take heed to the small things. This is pretty much my daily mantra! There’s no short cuts believe me, I’ve tried finding them! You’ll need to push through a hard beginning stage, if you push past the pain and swelling you then need to maintain it forever more! I promise it’s much less painful when your body is strong with bad joints, weak with bad joints is hell!

Good advice! My chiro looked at my spinal xray and asked me when I had my accident? I said I don't remember having one. He said - looks like you sure did! He gave me posture strength training exercises, adjustments and spinal decompression. I feel fantastic.

Thank you doctor you've been a great help. Can you explain about the neck ( twice accidental neck whiplashes on different occasions ) and an "imbalance shoulder", pain, and "crooked spine". A practitioner nurse chuck me off as having sciatica from the "lower back" problem. I don't have a lower back problem. When standing the pain triggers from, the "neck" from prolong head leaning forward, triggering pain straight down both legs. The pain begins and ends from the "neck" to both legs and feet gradually numbing the feet.

Hello, PT student here. Just a quick question… You said herniated discs CAN heal on their own. Are you referring to healing as having no pain and a returned state of mobility and strength or are you referring to the actual disc returning to its original state prior to injury? I’ve read several case studies indicating that the pain and injury just becomes asymptomatic in most cases, yet the actual disc retains its tear and is easily re-injured. Just trying to learn, obviously willing to be proved wrong. Thanks for the videos, love the content!

I am not sure wether i have a disk bulge or herniation. I must admit that i have overtrained myself in the gym and rounded my back once when picking up some dumbells (i know i'm stupid) and since then my back was tight for a couple days, then it was painful for 2 weeks and now i could say that the pain reduce to beyond minimal/zero. Any ideas on my matter? I am very worried and keep thinking of the worst scenarios.
@user-md5fm7bk6w

I must mention that i felt no pain down my leg, no numbness. only lower back pain. also weirdly enough, some testicle pain on that side of the back pain. I got myself checked out for an inguinal hernia and doctor said it was all fine, now i'm thinking it's something wrong with my spine or disks

@@user-md5fm7bk6w Me too, I have a pain in the right testicle. Now I believe it’s from left herniated L4-L5disk . I had abdominal and a right inguinal repair and right testicle still lingers on pulling and stabbing. Urologist examined and nothing was injured in the area. I took the epidural shot and will be taking my second shot soon . Sciatia pain is less almost gone but still tightness and leg weakness in the left side . And still pain on the right testicle . Hope I can avoid recommended microdiscectomy surgery. How are you feeling now ? Hope you are doing well.
@user-md5fm7bk6w
@user-md5fm7bk6w 2 года назад
@@refatrabadi6656Testicle pain is zero to none. However my back still upsets me quite a lot and my doctor thinks it's sciatica but not the herniation of a disk apparently. Just currently taking naproxen as an anti inflammatory and hoping all is going to be well as i continue growing and developing (i'm nearly 17)

Does the literature state how long it typically takes for a herniation to heal?
@E3Rehab
@E3Rehab 2 года назад
It varies, but I wouldn't recommend repeat imaging to assess the degree of resorption/regression because the MRI findings don't necessarily correlate with symptoms/function. The goal is an improvement in symptoms and function, not a change on the MRI. How long does an improvement in symptoms and function take? Also variable. Our podcast episode with Tom Jesson is a valuable listen.

@thehammer810able

Well I had a disc herniation and the surgery and I'll tell u by experience. I had a L-5 disc herniation from October and didn't know it was a herniated disc after the MRI in November. I was told to get the injection in my spine or surgery. I took the injection. It had little affect after a few days pain in the sciatica was severe still. I seen my surgeon again for a follow up and they didn't want to push surgery on me and I didn't want to do surgery because of the risk and recovery process. Fast forward to January of this year my disc ruptured out the blue. Went and got microdisctomy surgery and my sciatica was completely gone. I'm 5 weeks post surgery and I've beeb cleared to start doing activities again. RU-vid videos say u can heal without surgery but they fail to say the timeline for it to heal which is 6 months to a year it takes for the body to reabsorption of the herniated disc. It's faster to just do the surgery. I wish I would of done it sooner than waste months of hope to heal with time being in pain and agony from the sciatica.
@artsmatter2
@artsmatter2 2 года назад
You're right. It takes longer to recover through the bodies own ability. And there are many ways that you can delay your recovery through poor posture and position, over or under activity, poor nutrition, stress, etc. You also seem to have had the type of occurrence that responds the best to surgery - a sudden onset. Most changes in discs occur slowly over time. When it happens suddenly - out of the blue - and you remove the portion of the disc causing the problem you often get the good recovery you are experiencing. You made the right decision for your condition. You should be pleased.

Love the way you present the data. Blood Cholesterol is a risk factor for discs (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC3175866/). The discs are super sensitive to any impairment in blood flow - which is likely why as you age there's more herniation and there's even data that children have low back disc herniation now days.
