Indie Writer Director here... LOVE this. That sense of balancing relationships, yet holding onto the vital card - a take that is distinct and separate from the cacophony of production. A really thoughtful peek into our world... thank you!
Good on you Simon. I’mm a 35 year veteran editor in broadcast tv and in the last few years for a small company making corporate films in the agriculture sector. Also, a mate and I are making a doco about an independent record label. Great what you say about editors being the creative diplomats for other peoples’ dreams. I agree with this 100%. I would also say to young editors - don’t be pushed around either. Expect the same, do unto others and whatnot. Filmmaking is a collaborative art. Successful collaboration makes for great art. I also like what you say about the editors’ objectivity in the project. We have to look at the project and say how it is…ask the question - how does it make you feel? Does the feeling invoked meet the brief…the director’s intention? In any story, whether factual or drama, it is easy to turn tragedy into farce by sub-optimal choice of music, sequencing of shots, or pacing. I could go on forever. Thanks for using your fame to elevate the invisible craft of the editor.
I miss all those old science documentaries on uk tv. Great programs like Horizon, science reporting without a 'celebrity' in sight. Thanks for doing your bit towards those shows!
Great video Simon, and great to hear about and for you to share your backstory. Absolutely spot on all round, and fond memories of Sheffield in the 80s myself
I edit video compilations that if correctly done, have a major impact on people's lives. I edit evidential footage into court presentation videos. One of my biggest impacts was 27 years in jail for a murderer with a huge history of very serious violent assaults. The point is to keep the jury engaged, and never EVER bore them. To tell the story of what happened without embellishment or ambiguity.
I did a degree in Fine art and Photography . It had its art history . Music 🎶 I play guitar. I did some filming for music student . I'm just so out of date with software . But I've just sorted the AI Movie generator after seeing your experiments with it all . Thanks for inspiring me Sir🙏💗 So wish me luck , hard work ahead. It can get very finicky😥😂😁
Thanks for vid, it brought back some memories............... Back in the 1990's, my College, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs had a Television Studio that was used by the Media Students. I worked part time there as "Student Studio Engineer" . I set up sound and video, did satellite uplink and assisted students with production and video/sound editing, also repair and maintenance of all equipment. Even "Video" editing has evolved. The early reel to reel magnetic video media, was physically "cut" rather than virtually cut like today. We had the first Amiga video toaster, Dinosaur by todays standards. Did you actually edit, physically cut, film or was it primarily virtual editing with video? Also around that time got my Private Pilots license in Colorado Springs,(VFR,SEL, High Performance and (Complex endorsement for RG Cessna Cutlass), and got Mountain "certified", so that I could take rental aircraft into the mountains. I did quite a bit of 35mm picture taking from my rental C172's.
Any work I develop that references you Sir ! I would be most respectful towards. You and your channel are fantastic ! And I'm pleased to hear that poor spelling is not just a silly old mE thing 😆🙏😁 Don't worry , I'd rather run my stuff by a pro before publishing anyway. And yes ! We must be diplomatic and respectful to the Artist involved in our processes . I'm a long way off yet, but seeking influence and inspiration only at the moment . Thank you kindly for this vid as it has inspired me to get off my ass and get some work done ✔😆🙏YOUR MINT💗☕🇬🇧
Brilliant...wish I was young again as I would have gone into this kind of thing but almost 50 now and due to retire from a career at 55 ..im almost done...I just cant wait to be off grid and out of the vast black hole of a taxing system and be mortgage free and all that...hope I make it because I have really had enough of it all!! Just want to sit back and watch everyone else getting on with it like I have for like 35 plus years and just think...thank god thats over!...lol...😂😂 wow....where did that come from...😂😂
Prof - I was hoping you would discuss the editing you are using today and why that software over another editing software? I’m a hack editor and these questions intrigue me. Perhaps you could make a film like that in the future 👍🏼
@@ProfSimonHolland Yes, correct… where are my manners?!? I very much enjoy your content and appreciate the time you put into making them for us, your viewers! I am 65 and think most new movies are not good, but without good editing I believe two of my favorite movies would not be as good, Terminator 2 and the first Pirates of the Caribbean. (I was dragged to the first Minions movie and I thought it was funny and entertaining):
Lol how strange. I hadn't seen this vid before I made yesterdays comment 😂 The Pyramid and my ideas for content editing ect . How strange. Collective consciousness 🤔 😁I'm learning so much . Thanking you . I have some folks in film so I need to get a body of work together to potentially get something rolling. One must prove my worth first lol 😬😆 👍🍎☕🇬🇧
I think she was working from the early 60s through to at least the mid 80s. As well as Ealing she also worked at Villiers House. Her greatest work was on Allister Cooks America and she also worked on Colditz. @@ProfSimonHolland
