Hi guys, I made this video to give you as much information as I could of what it means to be a mental health technician. I also included a bunch of information about mental health hospitals and the mental health field as a whole. Hopefully this will help you answer any questions you may have about the job.

I’m the criminal evaluation intake units, u will see all that, the chair, hood, jacket, rapid tranq (RT). But what saved me a many of times is the tone of voice, & my well regarded bedside manner. I always remember, our residents are people too. (:

Thank you for posting the video it's interesting to watch. These places are absolutely crazy. I am currently stuck in the system as a mental health patient because I 'think'/know I'm God and that I know everything and I'm everywhere etc whilst actually I am incredibly stupid and started inventing my own reality when I became conscious at 3 years old because of an experience I had. Most people behind my back say I am a certain criminal and the doctors tell lies about me to each other (on paper and on permanent record to the government) so as to torture or control me. A number of the staff at the hospital visibly shook when interacting with me and a couple called me a rapist and a few called me a murderer (all secretively whilst I was in unknown earshot) It is definitely hell in the units for me but seemingly not for the other patients who bullied me and/or left me to my delusions. The only thing I could think of that could improve these places is if they were to do brain scans to actually see what is happening in the brain instead of just 'zombifying' people / only helping the patients who the staff and other patients actually like on an existential level. I asked for a brain scan for fifteen years and I only just got one because I smashed my head on the ground, turns out I have a small parietal lobe indicating dementia, schizophrenia, and/or severe substance addiction. The most important thing is to identify what happiness is by looking at brain scans and looking at lifestyles and then try and replicate that in other people (replicate brain activity and lifestyle). Logically that is the only way to actually solve mental health problems unless it is minor/non-existent and so can be cured with psychotherapy/cbt, 'mindfulness'/behavioural modifcation, medication etc. Some people come out the other side of mental health 'treatment' and sing it's praises all day long but at the end of the day there is no way the mental health people can help unless either a)you were never sick and were consciously or unconsciously putting it on or b) You are smart enough to outsmart all the people in there by coming across in a particular way to escape their law enforced 'treatments' whilst they diagnose you incorrectly on purpose whilst misleading the naive onlookers (staff, patients, public, media etc) as to their intentions. It was only whilst in hospital I realized they are following me online and in person By their existence (the mental health systems) they are saying one or more of three things: 'we know what a good life is and how to replicate that' or just 'we are here to make it look like we are somehow helping out society or it's 'mentally ill'' or 'we are also here to punish people who have the 'wrong' type of brain damage/inflexibilities'. The fact I have been asking for a brain scan for fifteen years without any luck, was locked up against my will in hospital for over a year, only got a brain scan from physical trauma, then the doctors ignore the reduced volume in the parietal lobe on the brain scan despite (or perhaps because of) it's implications, to me means these people are only really there to serve their own interests and the interests of the people they deem acceptable/benign to society, or to serve the wants/needs of society as a whole, and so they feel like they've done a good job / to control people's behaviour temporarily (or permenantly) whilst sending them to Hell. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. They can't make an omlette without breaking some heads

@andrewcipriano

Dominique, just beware that if you get a bachelor's in psychology, you will most likely have to obtain at very least a master's to do therapy. If you get just the bachelor's you will be disappointingly limited in what mental healthcare you can provide. Being a tech is a great place to start and get experience but about 70% of the techs I work with are either going into nursing (much better pay), med school, master's to become counselors, clinical psychology doctorate programs, or readjusting their career goals on something totally different. The other 30% last about two weeks before quitting or have been there 10+ years and have families. Again, it is a great job but for most, it is a starting point. It is not fun being on the bottom of the totem pole forever. You should check out my video about what you can do with a psych degree here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E35YoXczUYU.html Thank you for watching, I wish you luck in whatever field you choose!

Hey Andrew! It’s Dom, so it’s funny because when I first searched mht all that showed up was RBT. So I thought they were similar enough to do the same roles, so I enrolled into an RBT class to become certified. A few weeks in I decided to look up the reviews and it was kinda scary to see. So then I went back to do a more thorough search and found the correct one! I had an interview yesterday that I wanted to skip out on because of excuses but when I went it was definitely worth it. They called me back the same day but idk I missed the call so now lll call them this week. Let’s see how it goes!

@andrewcipriano
@andrewcipriano 2 года назад
It is as rewarding as the energy you put into it. If you do amazing groups and take the time to get to your your patients, it's great. If you sit behind the desk all day or expect that you are going to transform lives without a lot of effort, the job can become disenchanting. It is important to remember that this position is a great entry-level into mental health. If you want to get into this field, it is best to find a way to move up the hierarchy. Being a mental health technician is an amazing stepping stone but if you want to make large changes, it is best to keep your eyes on bigger job goals like therapist, social worker, psychologist, psychiatrist, etc.

This is along the lines of what I’m trying to do. I got a CNA 1, crisis intervention and de-escalation training, and completed a medication administration course. Moreover CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens training. I understand Traumatic Brain injuries, and have completed coursework in Psychology. Pretty close to having a BS in Psychology. I’m HIPAA Mental Health and Security compliant, and wanting to obtain further training in the Mental Health Tech field including: Addiction Studies, Counseling and Interviewing, and Pharmacology and Psychoactive Drugs, ect. Is there advancement in this job opportunity?
@andrewcipriano
@andrewcipriano 2 года назад
The advancement opportunities that exist for me as a tech are this (as far as I can tell): Psych nurse, social worker, psychiatrist, recreational therapist, lead tech. All of these opportunities require schooling of some kind except for the lead tech position, which really is not an opportunity worth hyping up as a vertical move. You are about to have a BS in psych, I am as well. In my opinion, your options are this: 1. Get at least a master's in clinical psychology (can become an LPC). 2. Get a master's in social work. 3. Get a bachelor's in nursing (can be done in an accelerated program since you will already have a BS then you will have the option to do an NP program in the future which will give you pretty much the freedom to do therapy, meds, and provide comprehensive care for very comfortable pay. 4. Doctorate in psychology (clinical or counseling) to become a psychologist 5. Med school to become a psychiatrist (overall best pay and opportunities but 8 more years of school). 6. Be a tech and get experience with patients to see if you want to do more schooling, haha. It is really hard to get a job in psychology without a master's degree that will pay enough to live on. If you want face-to-face experience with patients and are okay passing meds as a primary part of your job, psych nursing may be for you. If you want to become a counselor (at least one that can bill insurance, you are most likely going to need a master's). I hope this helped :) Let me know if you have any more questions!!

Kayla, I would estimate that about 60% of the techs at my hospital don't have a bachelor's degree. You should absolutely apply now if you think you're ready. It is the perfect place to gain valuable experience that will tell you what direction to head after your bachelor's. List any preexisting experience you have and when you get your interview, you can tell them how those five days helped you to see the hospital from a patient's eyes, which, is a very valuable experience to have. Thank you for watching, commenting, and sharing your story! Please let me know if I can answer any more questions!

Hi Deggie, good question! The interview included a lot of scenario questions like "What would you do if a patient asked for your full name or social media name?", and "How would you help a new patient that was upset about being at the hospital?" The interviewers really seemed to be looking for me to define clear, professional boundaries and be able to show them that I would be able to handle the emotional stress of the job. I really believe as long as you show a genuine interest in helping others in the mental health industry, and the humility to let the interviewer that you may not know something, that will go a very long way. If you really want the job, it will show in the interview. My experience in this industry so far has been that interest and compassion are more important than experience. I still may make a video but figured this would be a faster way to help you out. Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you.

STA's for the state can make decent money in time. My position is one of the highest paid positions for the state that doesn't require any degree AT ALL. With OT many tech make over 100k a year after "stepping out". What kind of people with no degree do we need? We're you sexualy abused as a child and somehow figured out how to channel that trauma into motivation to never let that happen to those you care about? We need you. We're you raised by parents who motivated through fear? Did they punish you by withholding love or insulting your failures even when it was obvious your talents lay elsewhere? Did you grow into a person who knows how damaging that can be and swear you'll never allow anyone to do it to those you love? We need you. Have you been strung out on meth or crack and made a whole bunch of bad decisions? Have you ever been unwelcome at your parents house? Have you ever stolen you grandma's pills because you couldn't score? Do you know how it feels to be that low? To know you getting high is more important to you than your grandma laying in pain because you stole all her codeine? Do you also know how amazing it feels to put that monkey down and never go back? To cut your grandma's grass for free and bring her strawberries for no reason and not even wondering if her scripts are full? Do you know how good? ( REAL fucking good 👍) We need you. Have you ever considered suicide? Have you ever messed your life up SO BAD you just KNEW everyone else would be better off if you just disappeared? Did something (like the love of a spouse or parent) stop you from making a terrible mistake and now years later you've come to know a life that was only a dream before? We need you most of all.

I love this PSA for mental health technician staff! You are absolutely right about the qualifications: Someone who is human and desires to reduce the suffering of others through their past experiences. I love this comment and we need more people like this who want to make an impact. I also find it incredible that some people in this position can make $100k a year. I am at the wrong hospital! Thank you so much for your time and insightful comment, couldn't agree more!

@@andrewcipriano MHT's in non state ran positions are WAY WAY WAY underpaid and hopefully that changes soon. If you're interested in what's possible go to workforillinois.gov and search for "Security Therapy Aid" or "Mental Health Tech" to see starting salaries. STA's start at about 45k (without OT) and top out around 70k. However... There's SO MUCH OVERTIME available that it's totally possible to break 75k your FIRST YEAR if you want to work that much. This job is definitely NOT for everyone, but sadly it seems almost anyone can wind up working here. I have tried for three years to change a toxic work culture from inside and I'm currently reassessing my approach. I can't change the people who already work there... It's impossible. But what I can hopefully do is change who seeks that job out. I'm considering a RU-vid channel dedicated to PSA's like my previous comment. I can't teach someone who's just there for money... but I CAN teach someone who's there to help others. “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything , but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can ...

I'm a Security Therapy Aid (Forensic MHT) working for Illinois State and we have similar procedures. We need more thinking people (like yourself) in our field. Too many Tech's seem to "wind up" here instead of seeking it out. A passion for psychology and or successful parenting in their pasts would be a huge plus, but of course most are here for the money. Lots and lots of Meth tweakers and kid killers wind up here, but the most challenging BY FAR is the SIB patients. The general public has absolutely no clue what a despondent person is capable of doing to themselves when they come out of psychosis to realize they've killed their mom, baby or both.... No idea. My unit is the only maximum security facility for women in Illinois. We see some shit.

Can you talk about the application process before you got to interviewing?
@andrewcipriano
@andrewcipriano 3 года назад
Hi Maddy! The application process was pretty straight forward. I found the job online. If I remember correctly, it was posted on a simple Google search. I applied like you would to any normal job; Basic info, dropped a resume in, and answered some questions about why I wanted the job and schedule availability. At the time, there was also a "quiz" to fill out to see how you would react in certain situations with patients. However, to the best of my knowledge, they eliminated this quiz. I literally got called within three hours of applying and they set up an interview. The interview wasn't anything too unique. They mainly just wanted to see how I would react in certain situations. I really think that as long as you maintain professionalism (no social media or outside contact with patients, no poor reactions in high-stress situations such as hitting back, name-calling, or grudge-holding, etc.) and show that you are a generally competent human being, you will be fine. After that, I was called and told that I had the job as long as I got a drug test, fingerprinting, and a tuberculosis test (all set up for and paid by the company). Once I finished those requirements, I had a start date and (at least in my hospital) had two weeks of training before actually hitting the floor for my first "real" shift.

I worked as a MHT for about 18 months and never got hurt. 99% of the time, if you respect your patients you will be safe. The other 1% depends on your attentiveness and team members to keep everyone safe if a management occurs. Pay attention and make sure you don't put yourself into any vulnerable places (like alone with an unpredictable patient) and you should be safe. Good luck, the patients need compassionate people like you, and don't ever listen to anyone's opinions who have not personally worked inpatient. They just don't know what they're talking about.

I decided to start on this new job to see if I this is what I really want and how would be to work with those people. I'm in NH and this position is second shift, and I'll have to work weekends and holidays. Anyways, what I want to know is based on your experience do you think I would be able to absorver anything as far as interior design and the pacientes? How much are you able to communicate with those people?
@andrewcipriano
@andrewcipriano 3 года назад
Woah, I think that the mix between interior design and psych patients is a great ideal. I am not sure exactly what you will be learning with regard to the two, but I can tell you that you will definitely learn something new every day if you take the time to speak with and interact with the patients. My experience is that the patients will be more than happy to answer any questions you have and they will give you a ton of valuable information about their life and experiences if you are willing to listen. It is a tough field and can be emotionally draining but at the same time, you can learn endlessly. To simplify my answer, YES! If you spend time with psych patients, you will learn very valuable information about the connection between the psychical environment and its relation to mental health (just don't be afraid to ask). If you want more information about this topic in particular, search for Jordan Peterson's RU-vid videos on him describing his "clean up your room" rule from his book "12 Rules For Life". He does a fantastic job articulating the relation between the mind and physical environments. Also, if you ever decide to publish or make videos about the topic, let me know! Sounds like a really cool field of study! Thanks for watching :)

so being a barista part time or MHT full time 3-11pm shift?
@andrewcipriano
@andrewcipriano 3 года назад
I cannot answer that question for you. What I can tell you though is that being a MHT is a job that is going to give you amazing frontline experience in psychology. If you are looking at a job that is simply going to be tolerable, and pay the bills, I always thought that learning how to be a barista would be great (keep in mind that plenty of people do make a successful and fulfilling career out of being a barista so I don't mean to talk it down). I also hear that Starbucks, for example, treats their employees quite well. However, getting a job at a psych hospital is often done intentionally in order to work 1 on 1 with patients in a pretty intense crisis-intervention period of their lives. Again, it is a great starter job in psychology but only if sought out intentionally to get experience in that field. I have no idea why someone would work in such an intense field if they are only in it for the paycheck. It is a disservice to themselves, the patients and the other staff that actually want to be there everyday. With that said, the good days far outnumber the bad. Finally, I would like to give you (and everyone reading this) some blanket advice but please keep in mind that I am trying to do this with zero knowledge about you or your situation so this may or may not be helpful to you: If you are choosing between the severity of two jobs like barista or MHT, you may be in a position where you need to sit down and ask yourself where you are going career-wise. As someone with extensive entry-level experience in way more fields that I am proud to admit, I would highly recommend sitting down and planning out where you are and where you want to be in 1, 3 and 5 years, for example. I don't know everything, but I do know that it is better to be 35 and have extensive experience in one filed (be something) than be 35 and have entry-level experience in 20 things (be nothing in particular). Hopefully this helps you make a decision. Please don't hesitate to contact me and if that advice resonated with you, I urge you to check out my quarter-life crisis video or ask me to make another video that would help go more in-depth about anything I said. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

Finally, we did a quick look at OSHA health safety and spent a couple of days shadowing seasoned technicians. It was a lot of information, overall, but not difficult information.

Haha, it got bumped to $17 starting and we get like $18-20 depending on what shift and weekends and great incentives ($75-250) for picking-up shifts. Advice for anyone going into mental health, don't do it if it is mostly focused on making $. Actually, that advice carries over to any job. The psychological data shows that after $ brings you out of extreme poverty, it has surprisingly very little effect on lasting overall happiness. (Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligman, 2005). For anyone reading this comment, don't aim just at $. It is a recipe for emptiness. With that said, if you can make a lot of it as a byproduct of doing something you enjoy that is done honestly and with integrity, go for it! Rich does not equal bad. However, rich, slimy, dishonest, greedy, and unsatisfied does equal bad. Thank you for the comment, Christopher. The pay is indeed important and it is a great thing to talk about!

@@andrewcipriano Answering questions about the job. I'm hoping to create a page to be used for Tech recruitment. After 3 years of trying to change a toxic work culture from inside I had to step beck and reconsider my approach. I can't change people from the inside... The "why" they used to get there is almost always financial and not ethical. We need people who want to make a difference... People who have experienced mental illness and have come out the other side. The hardest thing about my job is NOT dealing with patients... (not even close) The hardest part is dealing with other staff who obviously have no reason to be there except the money. I'm sure you get it, but for randoms reading this I'll give an example. Imagine a family where a father (or mother) has remarried. The biological mother has nothing but love and compassion for her child, where the step parent just sees the child as an inconvenience that must be "dealt with" so the marriage can continue. I often feel like the biological parent of my patients while many other staff see them as "problems to be handled". When staff aren't on the same page on how to deal with certain patients then the entire system breaks down. We need people who have been to the dark side and have come back. We need people who understand that THEY have an opportunity to save someone who only they might be able to reach. Whe need people who understand it "takes a village" and crave to be a part of the solution instead of the problem. We need people who see everyone as worthy of love and compassion, even when their past behaviors seem to say otherwise. I can't explain it, but I somehow feel called to find these people and connect them with those who need them. I know they are out there... many unaware that a job like this even exists without a college degree. I don't know why, but I feel The Universe has been prepping me for this mission all my life. I spent 20+ years in the construction field only to have my life blown apart by cancer and alcoholism. I was pissed at God and The Universe for many years wondering "Why does this shit keep happening to me?" Now, without question, I know. “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything , but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.
